For the LAST video in this series, I wanted to give you a roadmap for what to do next. This is the roadmap I wish I had and I really hope it helps you.
This video is the FINAL video in The Ultimate GarageBand Beginner's Guide series where I'm bringing you 30 bite sized videos showing you EVERYTHING you need to get started in GarageBand from the first time you open it until you are exporting out your final, mastered song.

The only thing this excellent series doesn't cover is how to fall asleep at night when you've heard the same 3 minutes of music 5000 times. My solution so far is to record another song, which just replaces the soundtrack to my insomnia but otherwise doesn't help!
My man, I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your incredible guide. I wanted to be a sound engineer when I was in my teens but told myself I could never do that. Thanks to you I've been empowered and feel like I've been preparing for this my whole life. I'm 48 and just finished recreating a Stones song in my basement jam room as my first project. I've also been recording my band's practices. I'll be signing up for the Ultimate Mixing System for sure. I'm so looking forward to the journey and many many mixes ahead! Thank you!
Colin, I am the very start of my journey with GB and this is an incredible help. Thank you very much for taking the time to put it together. It is awesome 👍🏻
Thank you so much Colin for the comprehensive videos and guide. I've been playing around with Garageband for 10 years and man did I ever do things incorrectly and out of sequence. I just completed my first mastered song following your methods step by step, and it's a lot better than anything I've ever produced before. I'm a big fan of what you're doing. Great work, dude!
you are absolutely right about learning the fundamentals first. I am the sound man at church but I'm not a sandman I got tired of bad sound so I dove in and now that's all I do there because no one has the passion or interest to learn the basics.. like first setting a line level for each instrument/vocal then go from there with volume eq, compression, etc.. nobody wanted to listen to me teach.. so I am the one and only sound dude at our church and quite frankly I love it.. its better in my opinion to have great sound with ok musicians ,than great musicians with terrible sound... well I guess that depends.. .. lol I have been playing guitar for 46 years and have taught myself digital boards and guitar gear over the years from reading the manuals, watching videos and asking questions about the basics and anything I don't understand. then I build from there and tweak sound as I go. I am a huuuuge tone freak and my entire childhood playing in metal bands in the 80s though I am truly a Pop artist ..lol people always commented on my sound... then came the alcohol. which consumed 37 years of my adult life.. now sober for a year and a half with one brief relapse, I dove into learning technology and studying music theory again. I really appreciate all your help with the knowledge and tips... it pieces together all the gaps of my experience in analog recording 30 years ago.. so eventually I plan on starting a channel as well sharing my music, visual art, luthiery ( which is what I am since 1985.) I have been repairing stringed instruments. and sharing my testimony of life in recovery intertwined. I will keep in touch.. Thank you Colin!!
Thank you so much for this series Colin. My first album releases next Friday and it’s all made with GarageBand and your videos. I have started recording the next one and I already think it sounds at least one percent better😉
I follow the ultimate band guide step by step and watch the relevant episodes in both beginners guide and the “old” videos before each new step for repitation.
I also really much like the “philosophical” stuff about doing it as good as we can and get better in small steps, it’s very inspiring and supportive.
Take care / Kristian Madsen
Thanks - I started doing home recording during Covid because the studio I use closed down. I've been fumbling my way through up to now but your course gave me a really good understanding of the whole process and gave me some great info, tips and ideas - so thank you!
Colin - I've really appreciated your series on GB! Could not stop watching the next next next episode. Now that we are at the end, it really seems like an accomplishment. This final episode was not what I expected, but much better than I expected. Your perspective and motivational talk were spot on. Continuous improvement is the name of the game. OK, now off to GB. In time, once I feel that I've gotten some proficiency, I'll upgrade to Logic Pro. Then I'll plow through your series on Logic!! Many thanks!
You’re the best man. Helped me through out my whole mix and master for my single. I’ll send you it once I get it uploaded
Colin, you're the best!! You should see my hundreds of PPT slides/screenshots I made out of your videos so I can apply all your tricks for my songs ^^
Yes, Thanks for the videos. I keep suggesting your videos to other songwriters and producers.
you're the king, thank you for this whole series
Hey brother, I just finished the series for the Garage Band guide and I am tremendously grateful for this. Your lessons are amazing and you explain everything in such a brain friendly way. Thank you so much. Great great content!
That's awesome, man. Thanks so much for your kind words and support and congrats on finishing it!
I am enjoying your presentations immensely. It all started when I did a video for my sister and her band. They weren't happy with the sound mix, which was not my job. So I asked the sound person to send me the tracks. I used your six point technique to rebuild the mix. They were thrilled, now I am wanting to continue with tons more.
Bro thanks for this video!
Blessings from Germany!
Great job Colin. I watched all of them, and download the materials.
Dude! Right on!
You’re amazing! This series has been truly helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
So very helpful!
Fantastic series well done I watched it all
Thanks for this series of videos! Very helpful.
thank you for this great series, I really learned a lot and I will go far with this. keep up the great work Collin !
I've learned a lot from your videos, thank you so much!
Thank you Colin for making this super course!
Greetings from Norway!
Thank you so much
Just finished the series ☻ Thank you so much for taking the time to break this down so thoroughly! I've loved music all my life but have just gotten started on the road of making my own. This information has been invaluable.
Thank you so much for such an amazing guide! just finished my first song and very impressed with the result - a huge difference from all my previous independent work! you are very inspiring to work at a high level on my favorite songs from my youth.
Thanks for the series....like all men I just finally read your sheet on compression...it completely
agreed with another youtube video.....setting the threshold using the lowest part of the signal,
making sure it does not touch it,.... only working on the loudest parts....Still having trouble doing
it but I am on the right path.
Colin, great job man! Your videos have been a HUGE help in learning GB. The only question I have at the end is how would you recommend sharing our music properly online by way of Apple Music, Spotify or other platforms? I have heard some people have used DistroKid. Obviously, RUclips is a great resource too, but I just have no idea on other avenues.
Thanks, Jonathon! I'm glad they've been helpful! I think if I were getting started today I would definitely use DistroKid. Some of my bandmates use it for their personal projects and really dig it. It also seems like a very reasonable price
Jonathon, I use DistroKid but a friend recently suggested CDBaby, he reckons it is better value and has wider distribution? I have not yet checked out CDB but will do before my DK sub expires, just in case...
I think if a person cares they will tell you that Logic is better if you want to produce music than Garage band , rather than wallow on this paradigm of what fits
Hey Colin I’m using a plug-in from waves titled smack attack to enhance my transients so my vocals can sit within my 2 track beat more . But my question is where should my big transients like the drum, kick & snare peak in my mix before mastering processing? , also could you link me one of your videos as well on this.
My LUFS is reading around -16, but the RMS meter is peaking at -2, which is way too hot based on the numbers you suggested in the video. So it's still a bit quiet, according to LUFS, but it seems like I don't have any room to push it louder. Any suggestions?
Thanks for this series!
I've run into a similar dilemma haha, plus when I bring in an actual professional song, the RMS is at like +4 and the LUFS is at -7. Strange
