This bag was originally made for children for school, the fact that everyone else decided they needed one too does not take away from what it’s original use was for. Fjallraven makes great backpacks for hiking etc but this backpack is for the minimal. If you judge a fish by how well it can climb a tree it will never measure up.
Something you may not be aware of, you bought the classic - aka has been the same since the 70s, there are updated versions with the same look but actual padding and a laptop sleeve. Kånken was also designed for school kids in Sweden so the removable seat pad and the narrow bottle pockets make sense for the time. Would be great to see you review some of the new designs which are a bit more practical
Mine is about 8-9 yrs old and has survived 2 hurricane evacuations and I use it daily. I’m rough with it and sit still has no wear or tear. It justified the 80-90 bucks and I still get compliments on the vibrant color and boxy design. I have a laptop backpack version as well. Super comfy with the padded straps.
I’m considering the Kanken because I want something: - Lightweight - Unstructured - Tote bag handles - Suitcase style opening I have a Jansport that’s awesome for hauling heavy stuff all day, but I wanted something light and easy to get into for long road trips/hotel stays. I’m so tired of digging around in my giant Jansport for what I need for the night/next day. I just want to lay it down, zip it open and grab what I need. I think the Kanken will work well for this.
I took my family to Disneyland back in March, and I easily saw 15 at one point in the same queue; I thought they were all coming from the same school or something 😅
I actually like that bag. It’s pretty durable and doesn’t matter how many things i put in it it doesn’t feel heavy at all, which is something i haven’t experienced with other bags. I’ve used it for 3 years now and still looks great. Also compared to other brands prices I wouldn’t say it’s a rip off since it’s also very long lasting. On the other hand if you need a bag for heavy tourism I wouldn’t recommend it because it doesn’t fit as much.
I think this review is fair UP TO A POINT, especially on price. But I lived for many years in Scandinavia and these bags are a staple of pretty much every young person at some point, including the mini version for kindergarten. The padding in the back, for example, was to give kids something to sit on while eating lunch outside if it was wet. So I think it’s fair to tell viewers why it might not be the right pack for them, but also a bit unfair to judge what is clearly a heritage design up against modern tech standards. It’s kind of like taking a Barbour jacket on a climbing channel and saying “this Barbour jacket looks great but is useless for climbing mountains” - that would be true, but that is also not what it was designed for. I guess in sum I think the review is mostly fair, but as someone who knows the heritage of the bag, it felt like you could have emphasised that more in the design aesthetics
Thanks for your comment and totally get it. The heritage aspect of any product is important, but for our channel we try and review on the consumer aspect - mainly how much you are spending, and what you are getting for that amount of money. I agree that the story behind the product is very interesting, but imo it still doesn’t rationalize the price point. But also like i said, if this pack speaks to you then by all means spend money on it (just like I did with my tattoos lol)
@@Nomads.Nation yeah on price I totally agree…I know some fans of the brand think they use the bag as a cash cow for their ‘proper’ outdoor gear. But it’s a lot for what you’re getting - I also wonder where the bags are made and if the high price is in part a result of its Scandinavian background (high wages, high taxes)
@@Alwaysunderablanket Their products used to be made in Northern Europe but now they are made in China. We are actually publishing a video about 'The Rise of Fjallraven' in a few weeks. It's a bit critical of them so I'm sure this conversation will continue in that video's comments as well 😂
If you want a kanken bag for school/college/work purposes, I highly recommend the 15” Laptop Kanken paired with the water bottle pocket and rain cover to further protect it from the rain. It even has an updated design with a pocket inside and there is a kanken organiser, but it’s only available in fog, navy and yellow I have had this kanken model for 1 year 5 months now and payed about £110 for it and it’s pretty durable. While it is expensive for what it is, I’ve used daily as a college bag, shopping bag, overnight bag/weekend bag, etc so it works out around 20p per day that I’ve owned it so far. I would have gotten the doughnut macaroon large, but I wanted the separate laptop compartment
Thanks for that Autumn! I def think the Kanken Laptop sounds like a better deal, or at least provides more value. I’ll try and get a review lined up 💪🏾
@@senny_penny it has a separate padded laptop compartment, but no false bottom. The only 2 backpacks I’m aware of that have a false bottom are the brevite backpacks (brevite daily and jumper) and the Herschel pop quiz backpacks. You could always look into the doughnut macaroon backpacks that are the same style as the kanken with more compartments, but I’ve never had one and the reviews I’ve seen haven’t commented on a false bottom unlike reviews I’ve seen from the former 2 I mentioned
In all honesty when i bought Kanken mini i almost regret it, i spend my saving (used to work in min wage job) for this 7L bag that didnt fit my day to day stuff. I bought another bag to get extra capacity too. But for me the experience of owning the kanken mini is a journey. For the past 4 years i learn how to work around the bag, slowly work on my habit to carry what’s necessary (ala minimalist), taking to any places (hiking, beach, tropical rainforest, mall, wedding or family function, traveling overseas) i see how it beaten up, blending in and just being a bag. Maybe I unconsciously tried to destroy the bag paid with 2 years saving, idk lol But dude never gave up. It does help me to think rationally on everyday carry, working creatively with the bag. Sure the strap can dig through the skin but i lighten up the load to just necessities. Now the bag become my constant companion to my workplace (no more min wage job) - it become that mini bag to go for light shopping after work so i dont have to carry bigger bags But, i also upgrade to few bags: Able Carry Thirteen (which i discovered from this channel), Aer city backpack and pacsafe vibe 25L Its not love at first rodeo, but you grew with it aesthetically
Love this comment! Thanks for bringing us through your journey and I totally agree that sometimes gear can make you tweak the way you carry for the better ❤️
I have three of these, a classic, a laptop, and a mini. I've taken them all over the world. I use them for work (the laptop one,) as a purse, (the mini) and travel, and hiking (day hikes- I have a serious pack for serious hikes.) I love these bags and think they're worth the money. They hold up and they look good even as they age. I actually use the seat pad. I've re-touched my oldest one with some beeswax or otter wax, and also got rain covers. I live in a rainy area, so it makes sense. I've even used these for camera equipment and I love that it doesn't look like I'm carrying expensive equipment. It just looks like I'm a hipster with some thick book nobody wants to read. I've had mine for years and am a fan.
8:22 - I think that's a cultural thing. The backpack was developed for school kids here in Sweden and we often use seat pads exactly like that when on school trips in primary school haha. Never bought a Kånken myself so for me that was a very funny reference to see. Sidenote: About the laptop, there is a laptop version of Kånken made for including laptops. The original isn't since laptops didn't exist in the 70's.
Not too harsh, however, in their defense, they are one of the few manufacturers who seem to have nailed the filling every inch of the personal item under seat dilemma, due to shape/size (17" laptop version... wish they still made the "Maxi")... a couple more useful pockets and actual functional water bottle pockets for something other than a Memo bottle slim, sure would be nice! BTW... the 17" laptop Kanken has padded straps... not thickly padded, but padded none the less. 🙂
Appreciate those insights Chuck! This is the only Fjallraven bag I've reviewed, I'm looking forward to testing out some of the more laptop-friendly ones
I got one for that exact reason. Personal item size that definitely fits under the seat. Doubles as a daypack. Not super fashionable or cool, but sturdy and simple. I got the all black No. 2 15“ laptop version for about $70 on sale. Still not exactly cheap, but ok for me.
@@pan0ptica I watch so many of these reviews and continuously wonder why very few companies don't design bags that exactly fit this size need... one or two inches over in one direction or the other, with the wrong gate agent, could send one of your bags to the underbelly of the plane, possibly never to be seen again! But the under seat void seems to be a moving target as the airlines get greedier and shrink the seats to pack more cattle in the car! What might have worked as an under seat bag two years ago, may no longer fit, depending on the plane. There's a lot of improvement that could be done to the Kanken line (like bring back the now defunct Kanken Maxi), but I have to say, in my opinion, they have nailed the shape, dimensions and snapable strap/carry handle aspect. I'm flying to Lexington, KY, from Chicago next month and have to put my climbing gear (shoes x 2, harness, chalk bag and first aid kit) and it all fits my 17" Kanken with just enough room for my Aer Slim Pouch toiletry kit... literally not too many inches to spare. On that particular size aircraft (two seats per side of the aisle) I don't think I'd have enough room for anything other than the Kanken. Oh, and I paid $100+ for my bag, so you got a good deal! Happy Traveling!
Fjällräven are well aware of the size of their "waterbotle pockets" and they will sell you an adaptor that gives you a proper waterbotle pocket. At an extra cost of course
keep in mind it's designed in sweden, just happened to be global wayy after the fact. People rarely carry waterbottles in sweden even less so in 70s when it started, perhaps a thermos on a day hike
I agree with this review, too. It looks nice and can pack a decent amount of stuff. And I like the boxy shape of it. But that's about it. The two worst things are the straps which are super uncomfortable when there is anything in the bag and the (for me) useless side pockets. There's no stretch whatsoever and they dig into the main compartment which in that case makes them obsolete because I could just put the water bottle inside the bag. I got the Laptop version of this bag with the added strap padding but even this doesn't help. I got the bag, loaded it up, wore it for 5 minutes and had to take it off. Haven't touched it since then and will probably sell it. I found the perfect bag for me and that's the Wandrd Prvke 31. The water bottle pocket is just so clever and big. Fjällräven makes decent products too. I have the Greenland Shoulder Bag which is a fantastic Messenger bag and the Ulvö 23 which is a proper backpack with decent padding and a "real" laptop compartment. In conclusion: I'll stay away from the Kanken series and get something else. I can live without the looks and fancy colours because I like my back to still be in good shape after wearing a backpack.
My wife has a Kanken Mini, and it works as a sporty purse for her. She likes the look and all that, but it's mostly a tote with a possible backpack carry option. I think you're dead on re: the backpack sized version.
I just ordered Fjällräven vardag totepack. I’m not super into Kånken style, so I found this one, which is much more pleasing and feminine (in my opinion). Unfortunately there is no reviews on it, so hopefully I won’t be disappointed 😅 I live in Sweden, so this brand is very highly appreciated.
I have had my fjällräven kånken since I was 13. Which means it’s almost 10 years old. I have used it as my main backpack for all this time. And with som love from the bees, it feels just as good at it did one year into its life. My dad has had his for as long as I can remember, probably before I was born. And it’s a little rough now but it’s still a great backpack. It’s not a backpack just for fashion, but for a lifetime if you know how to take care of it. 🌸
I got my Kanken on sale so the price wasn't too bad, but I definitely wouldn't have paid full price for it even though I do love it a lot. I use it as my edc backpack and I don't actually carry around that much stuff day to day (phone, wallet, headphones, keys, reusable shopping bags, sketchbook, a few pens, a chapstick and thats about it) so I haven't had a problem with the straps for edc use as it is super light. Though whenever I have to take heavier stuff with me it is definitely not the backpack that I choose lol and I am not sure I am going to be using it in the summer either because of the lack of ventilation. Mostly I just bought it because I think it looks cool xD and the bag itself is pretty lightweight. I knew it wasn't going to be the most practical backpack by far and that it falls into the 'overpriced fashion item' category, but its cute lol. Though for anyone wanting a bag for more heavy-duty stuff, I would go with something else.
love this comment! Totally agreed, it's a great bag and looks amazing, and would be fairly priced at around $50 USD imo. But like I said, if you love the look and want to get it even though it's overpriced, more power to ya
Of course being the bagwhore I am, I own this. I used it for a bit and then put it away. I actually like it and it lasts forever. Weird thing is that although I don’t use it, I can’t seem to give it away. I keep thinking I’ll use it again at some point for some venture.
This backpack is a classic showing of form over function at a pretty hefty price tag. You buy this bag for the brand/aesthetics and not for its utility. Definitely not for me. I can recommend backpacks at the same price but that offer insane utility value and way more comfort.
I had two of these before i realized why they did not click with me: I cannot stand the feel of that material. It honestly makes my skin crawl. However, i had a Raven by them, and it was a solid bag. I gave it away because it is bigger than what i needed. I am now on the lookout for a 16L bag i can use to put a jacket in and a water bottle. I am considering their 16L Vardag because i do love waxed canvas.
Also: I found, for MY bag uses, Kankens are really inconvenient to use. The straps make me cringe. The material drives me batty, and I feel like everything is just so difficult to use well on it.
A honest review. I want to buy this backpack because I like it. That's all. I know there are others that are more comfortable and have more pockets and whatever. But there are not many backpacks so versatiles for many uses like this plane one. The size is quite good for "small" people. I prefer this aesthetic one that another more equiped backpack but makes me feel like a turtle 😂 And, one more thing: for a woman that is used to spend hundreds of $ in handbags, it's a comfortable and stylish change 🙂 And again: is a nice backpack 🤷♀️
The Peak Design Totepack might be a better recommendation than the Wandrd Prvke. People looking into the Kanken would appreciate the minimum and stylish look of the Totepack. The Prvke is too technical looking.
The brand is fantastic, you only have to look for the functional bags, not the ‘fashion’ ones. Like the Ulvo 23L or Ulvo 30L. These are fantastic and compare quite well to the Evergoods CHZ 22/26.
Kånken have looked the same since 1973 thats why the seatpat arr stil there , its a schoolbag and no one bad cumputers and waterbottles then. Fjällräven have upgrad versions that look the same but with extra paddel computerplace and paddel shoulderstraps 10:30
thanks for your feedback! lots of people ask me if this is a good laptop bag (as these bags are quite trendy now), so the review was making sure people understand what this bag is good for and what it's not 💪
Ok so, Nomads I discovered your channel like 2 hours ago and since those past 2 hours I have been doing nothing but watching your videos. My dilemma is that in 2 months I will be heading to Uni, and I really am looking for something that has a nice laptop department, water resistant on the outside, and has a water bottle holder, I dont want the bag to be neither too big nor too small, just something to fit a couple of textbooks, a laptop and other laptop essentials. Not going to lie, I would love to hear what you have to recommend for me (maybe Aer tech 2?). PS: From today on, you're my go-to guy for any backpack related concerns, best backpack Guru on youtube by far!
Thanks for the kind words and best of luck at Uni! I would say for you really anything by Aer will be great, and also check out Modern Dayfarer Backpack ans the Nomatic Backpack. Also we have to roundup videos ‘best tech backpacks’ and ‘best backpacks for college’ - be sure to check them out!
I got the mini sling bag for everyday none busy day. I like it cos it’s cute and easy. I don’t think active people should not get this bag. Cos these lovely bags are for fairly none heavy back pack kind of day. It’s cute for everyday going around places for coffee , working, and walking around the mall. ❤
I don't have any of their backpacks, but everything else Fjallraven that I've bought is amazing, some of my favourite clothing, so if the quality is the same on these bags, which I assume it is, then I'd say it's worth the price.
@@Nomads.Nation Would definitely recommend! The vidda pro pants, the Canada Shirt, a pair of shorts, a sun hat the a hip bag are all very good from my experience. Can't wait to hike and camp in them more.
@@Nomads.Nation If you do, I would also recommend mystery ranch as a good hiking backpack brand. Helly Hansen also makes very good stuff, good for cold and wet climates.
@@teenagestacker6063 Appreciate that! I have tested Mystery Ranch produts before and I was impressed. I'll be sure to look into Helly Hansen as well :)
I’d love to see your take on the 5.11 Rush 12 2.0 A bit tactical but I’d love to see how you review it. I’ve used your channel to whittle down potential new packs
How do you not have 100k subscribers yet? Love your channel! Great review. I went with the Doughnut Macaroon after researching the Fjallraven and other backpacks but I wish I had saw your channe sooner!
thanks so much Alexandra! I really like the Doughnut brand and am hoping to do a review of one of their bags soon. Please let us know what you think of it!
If you live in Sweden where these are produced, all outside benches are wet or very cold 80% of the time, the seat pad is indispensable. Also Swedish pubs and restaurans almost always have outdoor seating, and it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. As a kid I used the pad numerous of times riding the subway because the seats where filthy. I can guarantee you will use the seat pad more than you can imagine, you are just not used to have one so you don't understand the usage. But the main selling point of this bag is quality and sustainability. I got mine in the 80'ties and used it from kindergarten to the age of 12, then one of my younger cousins inherited it, now one of his kids are using it. I think it has been in daily use for at least 20 years. I think this review misses a HUGE point. The price tag comes from that it is produced in an environmental friendly way, that costs. The brand is actually an out door gear clothing brand which is all about nature and sustainability, and have been like that since the start. For example they make rain proof outdoor gear refusing to use goretex because it is one of the nastiest production techniques for the environment. All their products are incredibly sturdy. I have a fishing/hiking jacket I have used for 30 years, it is in better shape than other jackets I have that are 1-2 years old... And to be fair, this is meant to be a kids bag, especially the size that is tested in this review. For adults there are laptop versions with inserts for paper, pens and other stuff.
Thanks for your comments! And while I agree with a few of your points, I've reviewed hundreds of bags (and am in the process of making my own) so I have a pretty good idea of when a product is overpriced. This bag is no longer made in Sweden (made in China), their eco-friendliness has gone wayy down in the recent years, and while a foam insert has functional value, none of it rationalizes the price point... (in my opinion!). Thanks for watching :)
@@Nomads.Nation What puzzles me as a Swede is that adults around the world use this bag to such an extent, in Sweden it is still considered a kids bag, like 3-9 years old kids, a 11 year old would not be caught dead with this bag.... As adults go, a woman can get a away with this bag, but not a man. A man using this bag would be the subject of ridicule on a daily basis. It is like wearing an avengers backpack while riding a BMX to work... Also, grown women using this bag in Sweden is almost always far left, and EVERYONE knows this, it is sort of part of the "intellectual far left identity tool kit", so any adult woman would not use this bag either because of the political statement it sends.
@@incognito7843 yea haha I could imagine its so strange that this kids backpack ended up being this global iconic phenomenon. Literally every other woman in Hong Kong is rocking one of these bags - they love how cute it is lol
@@Nomads.Nation What is also weird is that everyone in Sweden got this back in the 80-ties because it was so cheap. Almost every single kid in my class had one when we started school. But it was considered extremely ugly and lame among kids, but we all got one before we were old enough to protest. So when we started to get aware of what was cool or not, around 8-9, the quality was actually a curse. We all wanted it to break so we could get a Salomon or Adidas which where THE bags to own at that time. And now Konken is a fashionable expensive, and GROWN UPS actually wants it... LoL
The moment you said it was a rip-off... I subscribed. Thank you! I bought this (same exact one your reviewed) for a loved one, who really wanted it; the moment we took it out of the package, I was so mad. LOL With how much kids carry in their backpacks nowadays, I don't see how this can even hold a single textbook.
You must have gotten the mini size. I have a regular sized one & I can pack enough stuff to go on a 2 day trip, with room to spare, & that is including 2 bathing suits!!!And my 13 inch laptop can fit in it as well, although it's not the laptop bag, it is the classic version! The mini size Kanken is very small, so that's probably the one that you have. And I had a larger backpack, before this one, & I was able to get everything I had in that one, with room to spare...Your kids must have some very big books & a much larger laptop...lol !But, to each their own opinion!!! Also, if you need to have the padded straps, they sell the pads on their website for $20.00.
That’s why I opted for the 15” laptop kanken when I asked for one for my birthday in august of 2021. Wish I got the 17” one with the water bottle pocket and organiser with it as I could do with a couple more litres of space and more organisation
Hey Aaron! Nice video, as the others too! I have one question: Do you have any recommendations for my fiancé? She would use it for every day/in work (just for her stuffs: comb, spray, keys, tissues, phone charger, wallet, etc. No laptop or anything), it would be good if the backpack can be comfortable and made from good materials. I think a less than 20 l backpack would be enough. Thanks for your help!
In my experience girls go crazy over this bag cuz it’s very cute, so maybe a good option (but it’s not very comfortable). Aside from that maybe check out Got Bag Daypack, Day Owl backpack (should be back in stock soon) or able carry 13
Yeah the price is mostly about fashion. The bag is a fashion item. It's not meant to be filled to the brim with many kilos of stuff. They even warn you about it to not even use it for your laptop. That's what the laptop version is for.
Last time I replaced my backpack I considered this brand, for about 5 seconds, before rejecting the idea. 1. In Hungary these cost about ten times more than no-name brand backpacks. I can not believe that they would last ten times longer. 2. Hardly any pockets compared to even the very cheap alternatives. This makes it hard to organise my backpack. 3. Shoulder straps are totally useless, can not carry more than a few pounds before they become uncomfortable. Even the cheap Chinese ones come with padded straps. To me, it looks that these are for people who like to show off that they can afford expensive stuff and not for those who actually need to use them. A fashion designer student told me years ago, fashion does not have to be comfortable.
Do you have any good recommendations for backpacks with beefy water bottle pockets? I have a 40 oz hydroflask that I love and having a backpack that can efficiently hold it would be a gamechanger for me
@@switch1e oh yea if that’s the case I don’t know any EDCs that can help you 😂 it might be time to get a 2nd smaller bottle. If you find a bag for your 40oz tho please let me know
@@switch1e Glad to help! And yea its a fun niche lol, backpacks are a really amazing soft product. They have fantastic craftsmanship and you wear it every day so you really develop a relationship with it :)
This was ghe bag that i carried on a bus when i didnt drive during school carrying books, electronics through the rain and cold. I carried mine through the beach got caught through down pours and my things were dry. I have many of these bags becaus my first one 10 years ago is still kicking. I dont use my bags everyday but i used this everyday when i commutee
Thanks for the comment! It’s def a durable and well-built bag, but I wouldn’t recommend walking through many rainstorms with this bag as they are really not using weather resistant materials
Dear All, good morning. I write and thank Aaron for the fantastic review. Just a clarification about the 2 small terminations on the bag , these were made to help in pulling up the zipper. holding with the left hand fingers and pulling the zipper from the bottom to the top. This backpack is not for children too. Unfortunately someone in the past moved from the Vikings highlands to Europe. Quality of those bags were made in Sweden , however now these are manufactured in China and only God knows about the Quality control. The value of the bag is about twenty bucks, and the company moved to 99 bucks. It is not correct and it seems it was designed by drunk engineers, apart the pulling strip for the zipper closure. In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.
Not to mention that this backpack is impossible to adjust the length of the straps while wearing them. The straps are put opposite to the pull direction, and you have to put the backpack down and then use BOTH hands and all fingers to adjust the straps. Who designed these straps! I use them for grocery shopping which is great because it can fit 4 milk / juice cartons easily and properly and seems quite durable. BUT THE STRAPS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO ADJUST WHILE WEARING THEM. I would have never bought them myself but Someone gifted these to me so I am not that hung up on them but I would not pay for such a bad design decision myself.
could you guys do a review of the bellroy venture backpack? really considering getting it but theres not many reviews on it and im having trouble weighing the pros and cons
The first Ä is produced very similarly to the E in "Bell". The second one is more similar to the A in "Rare". Å is pronounced like the O in "Donkey". This makes it "Fyell-rahven Con-ken" instead of "Fjallraven Kanken" :)
I was skeptical about the Fjällräven Kånken but then I found one for $32 at a consignment store. I needed a new EDC so I decided to give it a try. It’s comfortable on my 5’4” self. The top tote handles make it easy to grab and pack in hand. It’s the perfect size for my lunch bag and a few other daily necessities. It’s lightweight and meets specifications for Ryanair’s personal item almost exactly, making it a great option for ultra-minimalist one bag travel.
You're quite correct AR, that pack is over priced & a rip off.! This pack was what we use when in Kindagarten where everyting just get chucked in, basically light stuff. We got the green, red & amber and each costs $20 then. It's ok for tiny little toddlers thus that seat pad although it has its function for adults. Nevertheless it's a backpack & has its uses. Our review will be on your next segment.Cheers mate. Hmmm...Cowabunga.!
I hadn't heard of this brand until I was in college, from 2015-2019. I always thought they were cute, but did not seem very comfortable or practical, especially since I went to a really big university in Florida where it's always hot and humid. There's no breathability on the back and the harness system doesn't seem comfortable for long carries. I've always had North Face backpacks and could not understand how people carried these types of backpacks around campus lol
These have doubled up in price in a decade. Its not always been that expensive. I have this backpack and it feels illegal to be this steep. It doesnt have much going on. The straps are terrible, it eats in your shoulder. Water bottle holder is unusable. Fjallraven do sell shoulder strap padding separately, but that will set you back another 20+ bucks (which is a rip off). Its a must have if you use this backpack for work or school with a laptop.
If you would have read the instructions that came with the pack, it said not to put the laptop into the pocket inside. It suggested that you get a Kanken laptop bag....Although, I think you could just out a small laptop inside. They do sell shoulder pads for $20.00 if anyone needs them. I LOVE my Kanken, I use it for travel, & it's the perfect size for me! I LOVE it!!
Great detailed review as always. The bag itself though, it’s cute and all but I don’t see much value to be honest, not much functionality , way overpriced .
Taav is a busy man but he still works with us a lot. He just wrote and edited a great video about the history of Fjallraven that we should be publishing soon. And he’s doing some on-camera photography gear reviews coming soon as well
I see a lot of teenagers with these bags. I think it's more an aesthetics thing rather than anything else. For me, it has no added value whatsoever and I wouldn't trust it to keep my laptop safe and secure at all! For that price you'd expect padding and some decent water resistent zips and a bit more organisation too!
I cannot believe that anybody would think that they are trendy. And the price of 99 USD is just ridiculous. They used to cost about 10 USD in Denmark back in the 80’s. We used to wear them because they were cheap. Don't pay 99 USD for that piece of junk LOL
Your review was not harsh enough... haha! I’ve always wondered why people love this bag so much. Personally, I’ve always thought they looked hideous and made for kindergarteners. And the lack of padding on the shoulder straps look uncomfortable af. You could recommend any packable daypack (Matador’s On-Grid Packable Daypack, Aer’s Go Pack, etc) and they would be cheaper, look more aesthetically pleasing, and be more comfortable than Fjakakhrsbd’s bags...
Haha I mean I always try to be as neutral as possible since everyone has different tastes/wants/budgets/needs. But yea, it’s way overpriced and doesn’t really offer much
I paid $43 on Amazon for my gray Fjällräven Kånken mini! I will put food and essentials in it (that will go inside of my underseat backpack) for flight to Morocco.
@@Nomads.Nation I don't know what bothers me more; that they sell the bag at this price, or that people pay this money for this bag. Either way, it was a great review, and ended my curiosity about this shenanigan.

@@yunleung2631 Yo! I agree! My CTB35 is awesome! Love all the quick access pockets, and the water bottle pockets are big, deep, & actually useful (unlike the Aer ones)! It's not a laptop sleeve. You want to put your laptop in it? Buy the one that says laptop! It's like putting on a sock and complaining that it's a bad shoe!
It's not overprices. You are just used to buy clothes, shoes and backpacks made by slaves in Asia. Try to made such a backpack, it's not easy and it cost time.
Sorry, but I feel like none of the "alternatives" you listed are a good alternative. I'm looking at this one because I want something stylish and urban that will last, just to carry a few things and my laptop. The backpacks you listed are completely different styles compared to Fjallraven Kanken and a lot more sporty, so not a good alternative for me 😅
@@Nomads.Nation Thank you! I did some more research later and in the end landed on the larger version of Doughnut Macaroon with back padding 😄 Watched a few of your videos in the process, they've been very helpful in understanding what options there are and what might be the right features for me right now, thank you!
Literally the worst bag I've ever used. It sits weird on the shoulders, the bottom of the bag keeps pulling my t shirt up every time, and the capacity is also very small.
I never understood this in america - is it that hard to check the pronounciation of a foreign word? When americans come to europe they keep correcting our english. Maybe we can ask for little favour to say one word to pronounce properly: fyallraevan
I think that I see your point, but also people from different places pronounce things different ways. Have you ever heard a Brit, an American, and a Spaniard say the word ‘Nike’? You’ll get three completely different pronunciations, even though it’s the same word.
@@jrkinabalu99 I think you are referring to Nomatic (with a 't') - if so, yes totally agree. But they are twice the price at least and a completely different target audience
@@Nomads.Nation True. All bags should have anti theft zippers. It's so easy for me to open the front pocket of someone's backpack to steal their wallet or phone.
@@Delta922 agree there aren't a lot of options out there, that's why the bag I'm making will have a front locking compartment. Next level security while still providing plenty of quick access 💪
You haven’t even tried the bag saying it’s not going to be comfortable. This is the biggest lie in this video. Second lie is unbranded zippers. They are YKK in fact.
“Lie” is a strong word. I have worn this bag many times and I stick to my assessment of the comfort - it’s bad. And on my version they were not YKK zippers, so just reporting what’s on the bag I’m reviewing. Have a great day!
@@Nomads.Nation all Kankens have YKK and its visible on the zipper. It's what I mean by "lie". Even when someone says you're wrong, you don't acknowledge that. Backpack visible on the recording is new so you haven't worn it before review. I think it's whatever at this point. Have a nice day.
Cheapest, most overrated backpacks ever. Other than the cute design and the color options, this backpack is trash imo. I agree: the back panel is laughable.
Why would anybody carry a water bottle that big and heavy? That is crazy! Use something leightweith... an empty 0.5 l. pepsi-bottle. The standart Krånken is for small kids (sub 14). - Get the laptop-bag with paddling and the pocket for laptop ... or sketchbook :D The side pockets are awsome for the Kånken Pen Case and yes, readers, sunglasses.
Do you want to help me build a game-changing backpack? 👉🏼 nomadsnation.com/building-a-backpack
This bag was originally made for children for school, the fact that everyone else decided they needed one too does not take away from what it’s original use was for. Fjallraven makes great backpacks for hiking etc but this backpack is for the minimal. If you judge a fish by how well it can climb a tree it will never measure up.
Great points and totally agree! But it doesn’t change the fact that it’s grossly overpriced.
@@Nomads.Nation I would have to argue that the price fits the product because a Kanken will last for years

Much appreciated on that! I’ll look into reviewing a more updated version for sure 💪🏾
They are actually umbrella holders
@@Janpeders24i have kanken mini. What are those pockets for? It’s impossible to fit an umbrella there
Mine is about 8-9 yrs old and has survived 2 hurricane evacuations and I use it daily. I’m rough with it and sit still has no wear or tear. It justified the 80-90 bucks and I still get compliments on the vibrant color and boxy design.
I have a laptop backpack version as well. Super comfy with the padded straps.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m considering the Kanken because I want something:
- Lightweight
- Unstructured
- Tote bag handles
- Suitcase style opening
I have a Jansport that’s awesome for hauling heavy stuff all day, but I wanted something light and easy to get into for long road trips/hotel stays. I’m so tired of digging around in my giant Jansport for what I need for the night/next day.
I just want to lay it down, zip it open and grab what I need. I think the Kanken will work well for this.
It’s a good pack for your needs, just overpriced is all
I took my family to Disneyland back in March, and I easily saw 15 at one point in the same queue; I thought they were all coming from the same school or something 😅
Yea it’s quite the global craze lol
Wow. Usually it's the Loungefly backpacks all over Disneyland 🤣
It def isn’t a bad bag, I just think overprice based on what you are getting vs what you are paying. Glad you like it!

If you want a kanken bag for school/college/work purposes, I highly recommend the 15” Laptop Kanken paired with the water bottle pocket and rain cover to further protect it from the rain. It even has an updated design with a pocket inside and there is a kanken organiser, but it’s only available in fog, navy and yellow
I have had this kanken model for 1 year 5 months now and payed about £110 for it and it’s pretty durable.
I’ll try and get a review lined up 💪🏾
So does laptop version have more protection of laptop inside? That is really important for me. Especially at the bottom
Maybe I unconsciously tried to destroy the bag paid with 2 years saving, idk lol
But dude never gave up. It does help me to think rationally on everyday carry, working creatively with the bag. Sure the strap can dig through the skin but i lighten up the load to just necessities. Now the bag become my constant companion to my workplace (no more min wage job) - it become that mini bag to go for light shopping after work so i dont have to carry bigger bags
But, i also upgrade to few bags: Able Carry Thirteen (which i discovered from this channel), Aer city backpack and pacsafe vibe 25L
Its not love at first rodeo, but you grew with it aesthetically
I've had mine for years and am a fan.
nice!
Agreed - thanks for your comment!
Lolz
keep in mind it's designed in sweden, just happened to be global wayy after the fact. People rarely carry waterbottles in sweden even less so in 70s when it started, perhaps a thermos on a day hike
@@carl9901 and the water bottles they do have, and in the rest of Europe are way smaller than the US size.
Great points! I’ll have to test out their other products to get a better understanding of the brand as a whole
My wife has a Kanken Mini, and it works as a sporty purse for her. She likes the look and all that, but it's mostly a tote with a possible backpack carry option. I think you're dead on re: the backpack sized version.
Yea the Kanken mini might make more sense (depending on the price ofc)

thanks for your feedback

This backpack is a classic showing of form over function at a pretty hefty price tag. You buy this bag for the brand/aesthetics and not for its utility. Definitely not for me. I can recommend backpacks at the same price but that offer insane utility value and way more comfort.
Agreed. They are trendy, but they are not functional
I prefer this aesthetic one that another more equiped backpack but makes me feel like a turtle 😂
And, one more thing: for a woman that is used to spend hundreds of $ in handbags, it's a comfortable and stylish change 🙂
And again: is a nice backpack 🤷♀️

LoL

A fashion designer student told me years ago, fashion does not have to be comfortable.
the designer is correct. this bag is all form, no function
Do you have any good recommendations for backpacks with beefy water bottle pockets? I have a 40 oz hydroflask that I love and having a backpack that can efficiently hold it would be a gamechanger for me
Hmm let me think… Daily carry backpack or travel bag?
@@Nomads.Nation daily carry. Honestly it might also be worth getting a smaller alternate hydroflask for daily carry situations haha
@@switch1e oh yea if that’s the case I don’t know any EDCs that can help you 😂 it might be time to get a 2nd smaller bottle. If you find a bag for your 40oz tho please let me know
@@Nomads.Nation Thanks! Also thanks for your great videos. I never really realized how much fun backpack reviews could be
@@switch1e Glad to help! And yea its a fun niche lol, backpacks are a really amazing soft product. They have fantastic craftsmanship and you wear it every day so you really develop a relationship with it :)
I bought one last year for university, greatly regret it . I’m looking for a replacement rn
Yea I hear that a lot about this bag lol
This was ghe bag that i carried on a bus when i didnt drive during school carrying books, electronics through the rain and cold. I carried mine through the beach got caught through down pours and my things were dry. I have many of these bags becaus my first one 10 years ago is still kicking. I dont use my bags everyday but i used this everyday when i commutee
Out of all the bags this is durable and holds my stuff i like it better than leather because I dont need to worry about it
Thanks for the comment! It’s def a durable and well-built bag, but I wouldn’t recommend walking through many rainstorms with this bag as they are really not using weather resistant materials
Ohhh, how I laughed during this review, you tried so hard to highlight the positives :)
lol it was.... challenging
😂 love this comment
💯
Just discovered your videos looking for a new personal-item size backpack. Can you review the Ogio Pace Pro 20?
I’ll add it to our wish list for sure!
could you guys do a review of the bellroy venture backpack? really considering getting it but theres not many reviews on it and im having trouble weighing the pros and cons
For sure! I’ll add it to our to do list. Looks like a great bag
Hey Nomads Nation, have you looked into review the Goruck GR1 and GR2? Some pretty legendary bags
Absolutely! Hopefully be reviewing them in the next new months
The first Ä is produced very similarly to the E in "Bell". The second one is more similar to the A in "Rare". Å is pronounced like the O in "Donkey".
This makes it "Fyell-rahven Con-ken" instead of "Fjallraven Kanken" :)
My Swedish lesson of the day. Cheers!
You deserve 600k subs dude. From THE 🇬🇧
Thanks my dude! We are a new channel but we are growing fast 💪🏾
If only the price wasn't this overpriced, I would definitely buy one :(
See if you can get one second hand on the Nomads Nation Marketplace
I know you did a review on the king kong gym bag what about built for athletes hero bag?
Haven’t tested it yet but I’ll be sure to check it out!
$32 is the perfect price for this bag. $45 max. $100 is way too expensive.
It’s crazy to me how much of a phenomenon it’s become, but hey, good for Fjallraven I guess!
As someone who is from South Florida I can relate to this comment lol
@@Nomads.Nation No way, I didn't know you are from South FL lol I went to UF!
@@jessicaho19 I'm from Naples and I actually lived in Gainesville for a year! Love that city, I had a blast living there
@@Nomads.Nation Wow, talk about a small world!!!

Awesome review, thanks for sharing from Australia
Glad to help!!
Can’t wait to see your bag pop up on KS with some nice added goodies.
Thanks for the support Dan!
Yea I have no problem someone liking the bag, but from a value-perspective it’s just not there
If you would have read the instructions that came with the pack, it said not to put the laptop into the pocket inside. It suggested that you get a Kanken laptop bag....Although, I think you could just out a small laptop inside. They do sell shoulder pads for $20.00 if anyone needs them. I LOVE my Kanken, I use it for travel, & it's the perfect size for me! I LOVE it!!
Mine didn’t come with instructions. And it’s still way too overpriced. But to each their own!
Soooo if you buy Fjallraven backpack on the internett it come with a: back compartment, padded strap and extra pocket inside the backpack.
Just saying
Didn’t come with any of that stuff when I bought it from a licensed retailer 🤷🏻♂️
The laptop versions do.
@@pan0ptica good to know! I’ll be sure to do a review on that version as well 💪🏾
So I bought a kanken for £20 thinking it was fake but it was real!!
Now that’s a solid price for it! Lol
4:35 those look like things you pinch while pulling the zips
Ahh that makes sense
Great detailed review as always. The bag itself though, it’s cute and all but I don’t see much value to be honest, not much functionality , way overpriced .
Very cute. Very overpriced. Thanks for the love!
Do you still work with Taav?
Taav is a busy man but he still works with us a lot. He just wrote and edited a great video about the history of Fjallraven that we should be publishing soon. And he’s doing some on-camera photography gear reviews coming soon as well
I see a lot of teenagers with these bags. I think it's more an aesthetics thing rather than anything else. For me, it has no added value whatsoever and I wouldn't trust it to keep my laptop safe and secure at all! For that price you'd expect padding and some decent water resistent zips and a bit more organisation too!
100% agreed. It’s a fashion thing, which is totally fine, but it comes at a high price tag with very little bang for your buck
They do have a version that's made for laptops......
Water bottle is not going to fit. You need to buy the Kanken bottle pocket that has some sort of metal that fit in the pocket.
Yea I’m not a fan of that lol
I cannot believe that anybody would think that they are trendy. And the price of 99 USD is just ridiculous. They used to cost about 10 USD in Denmark back in the 80’s. We used to wear them because they were cheap. Don't pay 99 USD for that piece of junk LOL
Hard to argue with that logic lol
But yea, it’s way overpriced and doesn’t really offer much
It's "cute"
@@franciscofuentes8916 some people love “cute” lol
It’s the Kipling brand of the late 2010s.
💯
I paid $43 on Amazon for my gray Fjällräven Kånken mini! I will put food and essentials in it (that will go inside of my underseat backpack) for flight to Morocco.
Good price!!!
best alternative brand Doughnut Macaroon made in Hong Kong
Bro Doughnut is a great brand!! Living in HK I see them everywhere. I haven’t reviewed their packs yet but they are growing super fast
they are selling $20 backpack for $100 it's incredible
having made my own backpack in a factory, I would guess this costs significantly less than $20 for them to make
@@Nomads.Nation I don't know what bothers me more; that they sell the bag at this price, or that people pay this money for this bag. Either way, it was a great review, and ended my curiosity about this shenanigan.
what is the colour?
Not sure, sorry!
FINALLY! A backpack review channel reviewing a basic bag!
Really liked the close up shots
Also, this is THE backpack for upper middle class white girls

I signed up for the campaign backpack thing. Just my opinion, love the goofy pic but I feel like it could be framed better haha. Supporting you all the way!!

@@Nomads.Nation Seriously. Everyone has it. I wish Evergoods had their colors lmao. The CTB35 might be the perfect bag if it were lighter
@@yunleung2631 in a perfect world I’m sure they’d love to offer more colors but it’s so expensive to be able to do that
@@yunleung2631 Yo! I agree! My CTB35 is awesome! Love all the quick access pockets, and the water bottle pockets are big, deep, & actually useful (unlike the Aer ones)! Don’t need the waist straps, but otherwise, it’s my favorite travel bag! If they made a 14 to 20 liter version with the same aesthetics, I’d be all over it!
Its basic and it expensive..but its also has a bunch of expensive accessories that addresses all the discomforts
I’m seeing a recurring theme here lol
This backpack is legitimately more popular than me , granted ...that's a pretty easy achievement but still lol, this backpack is everywhere
Makes two of us haha
It's not a laptop sleeve. You want to put your laptop in it? Buy the one that says laptop! It's like putting on a sock and complaining that it's a bad shoe!
lol, can’t argue with that
Jansport left the room
We’ll be reviewing them soon too 😏
It's not overprices. You are just used to buy clothes, shoes and backpacks made by slaves in Asia. Try to made such a backpack, it's not easy and it cost time.
actually I am making my own backpack, so I do have a pretty good idea - ruclips.net/video/X0cnUeGwwR8/видео.htmlsi=iL6WTZ2eD0jdQcb0
Sorry, but I feel like none of the "alternatives" you listed are a good alternative. I'm looking at this one because I want something stylish and urban that will last, just to carry a few things and my laptop. The backpacks you listed are completely different styles compared to Fjallraven Kanken and a lot more sporty, so not a good alternative for me 😅
Check out the Doughnout Macaroon
@@Nomads.Nation Thank you! I did some more research later and in the end landed on the larger version of Doughnut Macaroon with back padding 😄

My pleasure!
The more you use the pack the softer it gets.
hells yes
Literally the worst bag I've ever used. It sits weird on the shoulders, the bottom of the bag keeps pulling my t shirt up every time, and the capacity is also very small.
Yea all of these things are true, but it doesn’t bother some ppl looking for something super simple (and “cute” lol)
They are YKK zippers
Not mine, maybe other versions have it tho

I never understood this in america - is it that hard to check the pronounciation of a foreign word?
When americans come to europe they keep correcting our english.
Maybe we can ask for little favour to say one word to pronounce properly: fyallraevan
I think that I see your point, but also people from different places pronounce things different ways. Have you ever heard a Brit, an American, and a Spaniard say the word ‘Nike’? You’ll get three completely different pronunciations, even though it’s the same word.

You didn’t even try to wear it yet you say straps are uncomfortable
I wore it before and have worn it after. It's extremely uncomfortable.
Those bags are also very easy to steal things from even when you're wearing it. I have no problems.
Most bags are that way though
@@Nomads.Nation True. All bags should have anti theft zippers. It's so easy for me to open the front pocket of someone's backpack to steal their wallet or phone.
@@Delta922 agree there aren't a lot of options out there, that's why the bag I'm making will have a front locking compartment. Next level security while still providing plenty of quick access 💪

Agreed, do not put a laptop in this bag

true dat

Why would anybody carry a water bottle that big and heavy? That is crazy! Use something leightweith... an empty 0.5 l. pepsi-bottle.
The standart Krånken is for small kids (sub 14). - Get the laptop-bag with paddling and the pocket for laptop ... or sketchbook :D
The side pockets are awsome for the Kånken Pen Case and yes, readers, sunglasses.
Many people like heavy duty insulated water bottles - very durable and keeps your beverage cold!
