    My best experience with the lack of time meaningfully passing was that I took a break from 2008 to 2014. When I logged back on, I had a quest I had already completed but not turned in. So I went to the questgiver in Ashenvale. He said "thanks so much for returning so quickly". I was like, my guy, it's been six years, the entire world has been broken apart during this time, and you were just sitting here waiting for me to bring you twelve flowers or whatever, and you regarded that as "quick".

    Late to the video, but this reminded me of the time I discovered what I dubbed "the hole" in Westfall back in like 2006-2007. It was a hole in the geometry of the world, a triangle the perfect size for a character to fit into. When you dropped in you fell far enough to die. Upon running back and rezzing you are left just standing on a flat plane with a cracked mud texture. I ran around for a long time down there. I ran all the way to Stormwind, I was close enough the music even played, it was really surreal. I sometimes think about "the hole" and wonder when they patched it. I still remember where it was to this day.

      lol there was a hole in the ground near the spawn for night elves like over a decade ago, and I remember I fell into it and kept infinitely falling. I lost my first character that way because i couldn't do anything, not even use a hearthstone.

    This is probably why the deep ocean always scared me. Going deep enough right before the fatigue hit and killed you and you could see the land start do degrade in fidelity, it was like a terrifying dare to myself to see how far I could go. Still easily one of the most uncomfortable feelings a game has invoked in me

      This. Also falling unexpectedly through a floor and seeing the skybox and the vast nothingness in between made me goosebumps every time. Experiencing something like this with 3D googles on would probably made me scream in terror

      im glad im not the only one who felt the same, it really feels like the new world design of WoW is missing the mysterious vastness that it used to have. the old emerald dream (though unfinished) really got the vibe across perfectly

    The idea that Blizzard's utter lack of planning about how the game's timeline works and their fix for how to add new things while preserving old ones being bandaids like Zidormi (or, for example, when there's 3 different Warchiefs all in the same spot in Orgrimmar due to quest flagging) actually creates a liminal hellscape is very funny.

    • @d0k0night
      @d0k0night 6 месяцев назад +9

      It's not a lack of planning that's the problem. The real issue is how to tell a continuing story to weave all the timelines together. Let's not pretend that somehow, for some reason, no one held a planning session with all the writers they employed and everyone just threw ideas at the wall and just duct taped it all together. Bit of a disservice to all the people, their hard work even if the story didn't pan out the way you personally wanted it to.

    I think that's exactly what is so lovable about World of Warcraft or any game really. Most games don't move on. They are expierences which can be revisited and relived over and over again. Young me created my first character and adult me is still playing the same character, even though it has different skills now and wears different equipment. Young me watched movies like Kung Fu Panda or How To Train Your Dragon and adult me has a better understanding of those movies because of all the experiences I gathered along the way. Games, movies, art and probably a lot of other things may stand the test of time and never change while the real world vastly changes over time. It's exactly this stability that I seek in video games. Whenever my real life is becoming chaotic with stress and deadlines, I can always return to same old game and it will still provide me with a way out, at least for the afternoon.
    Awesome video, keep it up.

      Some of the custom areas reuse abandoned works from vanilla. I believe Crescent Grove was intended to be a battlegrounds. The map was left in the game files but otherwise inaccessible to the player.

    hey, idk if these are the types of vids you usually make (i just subscribed after your last vid about missing when WoW was just a game), but i love these styles of videos and i hope you keep it up! i feel like these types of videos really reflect my feelings on WoW having played it since i was 6 yrs old basically. oh also, my favorite liminal space in WoW is this hidden area in the mountains of Moonglade that my friends used to fly me up to on their double seated mounts and we would roleplay warrior cats (even tho i had no idea what warrior cats was at the time lol). i just remember it being long stretches of empty green and blue mountains. also, i think WoW’s liminality gives it that charm. all the time fuckery can be confusing sometimes, but having time as a flat circle makes me feel like “oh yeah, this is world of warcraft” or “oh yeah, this is a video game” instead of constantly needing linear progression

    Commenting on the weird time thing with Azeroth
    This is why I find all of the lore so hard to follow! One of my characters has a quest where the NPC was talking about needing to defeat the Lich King, yet a different one has NPCs saying he's already dead. As someone who hasn't been alive long enough to have experienced all of the campaigns, it's incredibly confusing. I don't even know who a majority of the bosses are! The fact that there isn't one *clear* storyline like most games makes WoW so much harder to follow. But it also makes it all the more interesting.
    Another thing that really confused me is that thing they were doing with the pink-haired gnome who would let you replay campaigns. I was under the assumption that you could already play them if you followed the right quest lines??
    Where do the Death Knights fit into the dragon themed campaign? Are all of the Death Knight characters just living in the past? What about the Demon Hunters??? I wish there was some sort of- oh. I was gonna say "I wish there was some sort of quick summary! But this game's existed longer than I've been alive, I doubt anyone could manage to summarize that." ...But there's a summary in my recommended- My prayers have been answered! Thank... (insert religious figure here)!
    Love your videos btw :)

      The Chromie thing lets you replay campaigns, but scaled to your level. It only works if you aren't max level. (Is she pink haired? I'm colorblind but I thought she had whiteish hair?)

    Liminal space is not the same as the "the backrooms"
    Calling those out of bounds areas the backrooms I think is accurate. But liminal space by definition is space that is regularly traversed but never stayed in.
    It's space that is meant to connect places but is not a destination. It's not a place anyone lingers in.
    So in the case of WoW I think Liminal space would be the majority of an instance or raid that has no boss. Or an instance where all enemies are killed. There is no longer a purpose for you to be there after you killed everything so I think it becomes liminal space once the boss is defeated. Back-tracking thru an empty instance is a bit eerie in itself.
    None of the major cities really have liminal space in this sense I think, cause they're all designed to look as if they're lived in by people.

    I never knew about the Prison area. FF14 has the same sort of place rule breakers will be TPed to by GMs but I think it has proper textures to look more like a medieval prison. It’s still in use last I heard. There are videos of it here in YT

    • @josejuanandrade4439
      @josejuanandrade4439 6 месяцев назад

      So far i know, the room in WoW was never ever used. The idea tho, was to teleport in people who'm had been reported for whatever transgression, then he would find himself in the chair, unable to move, as the GM would have a talk with them. A cool idea in concept, however, a tad creepy and hard to realize in reality, as people could simple alt+f4 out of the game. Then there is the fact it may be too jarring for people to find themselves suddenly abducted like that.
      In the end, any time, and up to this very day, GM will simply whisper you whever you are and inform you, if you have been reported, or they are about to "punish you"

    • @vinapocalypse
      @vinapocalypse 6 месяцев назад

      @@josejuanandrade4439 In FF14 anyway the teleport to GM jail seems to be a prelude to account suspension or banning. You could Alt-F4 but have to end up contacting account services to find out why you were suspended/banned. Porting them to a jail and removing them from any groups they're in probably ensures they will actually see and be made aware of the account action where a whisper might get lost in the chat scroll-back
      Yea search for 'ffxiv jail' for videos. Things like berating other players in a dungeon or PVP, using slurs, banned words in guild names, etc will do it.

      yep, the mordion gaol is still in use for if a gm needs to pull you out of the game to speak to you (e.g. if you're actively being disruptive or if you're about to get suspended anyway). the gms are dressed up like ascians, it's pretty cool
