    Market has never been a problem if the right products are being introduced to Market. The population of 12m would be great however the issue is the purchasing power of the population.

    It’s not to do with the market size. If one wants to grow, they have to diversify their business, give people what they want, understand the market and if they want to grow further, they have the whole east Africa and even Central Africa and Africa as a whole. And why not even the rest of the world? This “market is small” mindset is of a small mindset. If the owner of ZoraBots based in Belgium is planning on bringing his robots to Rwanda why would he be worried about the size of the market in Rwanda if there is high efficiency in doing business which takes into account of safety and security, very minimum corruption and its proximate position to its neighbouring countries and Africa?

    I'm from Rwanda and currently setting up a business in Ethiopia which is considered the fastest growing economy in Africa with 110 Million people.
    Unfortunately, it takes months to register business in Ethiopia with strict requirement like $200k capital deposit and the level of corruption is severe in the police and judiciary. Furthermore, the roads are bad, female literacy is 30%, internet penetration is poor, the poverty levels are extreme which suggests a high probability of ethnic civil war in the near future.
    Now I know why Rwanda is leading Africa. Big markets like Nigeria, DR Congo or Ethiopia will give you more pain than profits.

    • @JoStylin
      @JoStylin 4 года назад +4

      Not entirely true. It depends on the business you are setting up. Online businesses in Nigeria are making a killing. Rwanda is better in terms of infrastructure/diplomacy etc. However, the small population won't do much for your business if it's online.

    • @genghiskhanye
      @genghiskhanye 4 года назад

      @@JoStylin You seem to believe in artificial borders created by colonialists. See the potential beyond borders. Let's look at online statistics:
      A Rwandan online education program could attract millions of people because the Rwanda - Rundi language is spoken by over 35 Million people in Africa (Kivu in Congo, West Uganda, Burundi & Rwanda, East Tanzania).
      Only Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba and Amharic could perform better in Africa.
      Check out how many views Rwandan artists like Meddy or The Ben generate on RUclips you will understand. If Rwanda keeps the current social economic transformation path, the purchasing power will drive huge demand from the 15 Million domestic market and 100 Million in neighbouring countries (Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania)

    • @JoStylin
      @JoStylin 4 года назад +2

      @@genghiskhanye Sorry, I was referring to online businesses that require postage or those online businesses that specifically target one country. The reason why Jumia has been very successful was because they targeted larger African countries with a sizeable population such as Nigeria. Their business model required a sizeable population as well as an efficient postal service that was able to reach the millions of people living in Nigeria. Now, if this model was re-enacted in Rwanda, they wouldn't do much in terms of economic gains due to Rwanda's small population and their low purchasing power parity. After Jumia's success, they carried the same business model to other African countries with a good-size population such as Ghana and Kenya - they also were successful in both.
      This is one thing Dr Harnet fails to mention. Purchasing power parity is very important when it comes to setting up a business - especially a business that only targets the population within one single country and has a physical location in one country. If your Rwandan-based business is agricultural and targets the international community (e'g Rwandan coffee etc), then it could possibly do well. However, the middle-class population is not as big as the more populated countries in Africa, so any business that requires Rwandas to purchase anything might not do so well. This is the reason many investors are not flocking there.
      Investors that want to settle in Rwanda should focus more on the services sector or the agricultural sector. This includes Fin-tech, call centers, digital marketing, app creation, technological inventions and other businesses that don't require Rwandans to 'purchase' anything but rather empowers Rwandans through the use of their organized society and intelligent minds. However, this requires the government to invest very well in education.
      As for the online education program you mentioned, yes that is a great idea; however, Rwanda has a lower purchasing power parity as I have mentioned, so I am not sure how well it will do. Also, why would you create a Rwandan online education program only in the Rundi language? Why limit yourself? Why not do it in English and attract a bigger market? It's not about having a 'colonial mentality, it's about business. You go in business to make money - emotional and racial nuances should be left aside.

How is the importation ease - customs and such, seeing that Rwanda is landlocked? Also, do you pay import duty to destination countries when selling goods to other east African countries that you have produced in Rwanda?

    If Volkswagen is in Rwanda, which is a very small market, I'm pretty sure that they're relying on the entire East African market rather than just the Rwandan Market.
    So if such a huge company could take the risk of venturing into such a very small market compared with market size that they're use to, then anyone with similar or smaller market size should feel comfortable takind the risk of venturing into a market as small as that of Rwanda

    • @naturalmystique1237
      @naturalmystique1237 4 года назад +1

      I looked into this seriously once. You'd be better off growing and selling mushrooms in a country that has many restaurants and green grocers. Like Kenya. Though there's a lot of competition. The overhead is low. Many grocery stores run out of shrooms fast so the need is there, also selling directly to restaurants building relationships with chefs is important. Problem is mushrooms perish fast so its tough to export. Also, not many Africans know what the hell it is nor use it in their cuisine in spite of it being so healthy especially if you want to find a niche in gourmet shrooms like shitaake (common button shrooms competition is very high.) Good luck
