I saw this when Gardens and guns released it about seven years ago I think - that was my first introduction to Shakey Graves, but I was so impressed because of the John prine cover. Seriously he really does it justice in a different kind of way. There’s not a group singing harmony, and he put some emotion into it that blew me away. Also, what a treat to hear him talk about the cool teacher in elementary school that played John Prine covers during their lunch break and they would sing along… that’s a pretty cool story. I still miss JP with all of my heart. I still cry often. I’m glad I can listen again because for a while, I could only listen to covers and collaboration. I still remember my exact feeling that morning April 7, 2020. I woke up late and on my phone was a text message from my father who Introduced me to John in the early 1970s. The Text said simply : today is a sad day indeed.
I has just read Fiona saying that while he was in critical condition things were looking good so I didn’t have an expectation I was going to lose him. Yet, the emptiness with which I was consumed when I read that message really told me all I needed to know.
You know, I never imagined life without him as an integral part of it. His words echoed through my mind many times each day. you know it’s been such a devastating loss for me that it scares me. I can’t imagine family being worse yet … what if they’re not?

Haha I'm trying to learn this song the way shakey plays it but he plays this song radically different every time he plays it lol.
It's been difficult to learn but at the same time I've watched a few different performances of him playing this song and it's really taught me how fun it is to improvise and also how creative you can twist a song into all sorts of patterns and feelings.
Shakey really is a great guitar player. I've seen him strum this song and I've seen him do really beautiful finger picking style on it.
He's also teaching me that there isn't a single way to play a song correctly and the most important part is to play it however it most speaks to you at that moment.
Ok... Back to seeing how he plays this song this time!
