Saw Steve’s original Spectral Mornings tour in 1979-80 at Uncle Sam’s in Syracuse NY. The place was packed to the rafters, in awe of this legend. I remember every song like it was yesterday, especially this one and Everyday. Absolutely unforgettable!
My wife and I caught Steve Hackett and band on their last fine performance before they were forced to pack up and go home just as every venue in the US was shutting down. Catch their Firth of Fifth performance at the Allentown, PA Miller Symphony Hall venue. Exquisite, as always.
The guitar sound Steve gets on this song always makes chills go down my spine. It is a great guitar solo one of my favorite! Go Steve a true musical genius for sure!
From a life long Steve Hackett fan: however outstanding his rock-albums are, for me the most sublime music Steve has produced are the neo-classical albums A Midsummerninght's Dream and Metamorpheus. I think these albums are the ultimate proof that Steve is completely in a league of his own. I'd love to hear him talk about those works. An individual track that touches me deeply is Deja Vu from Genesis Revisited. This piece also led me to discover the magnificent voice and life work of Paul Carrack. There are some interesting liner notes about the song on the album cover, but I wouldn't mind hearing Steve open up even more about this masterpiece.
Spectral was always played faster live than on the recording. I found the song much more soulful played at a slower tempo. It's a beautiful, mournful melody line. Well done Steve!
Brilliant piece of work. I play it - loud - whenever I can, and this is the last song to be played during the last ceremony in my life. Love it to bits.
Steve's greatest solo anthem. It's just so atmospheric. Simply a wonderful composition and a lesson in how to play guitar. Nick's keyboard playing is sublime - a track I also love is Hammer in the Sand on Defector. He really added to Spectral Mornings. Thanks for giving us a tour of this classic track, Steve.
I have to say that the track selections in this series have been on point! You're always picking another one of my personal favorites. Thank you so much for taking the time to make something we can look forward to each day!
haha, funny, you recorded this in Holland. I went to a concert in the Vereniging in Nijmegen when you were performing there. Stage was dark, crowd was softly talking amongst eachother and us, sitting on the balcony in the back, we never saw you guys coming onto the stage.. All of a sudden... Beng! Wow, that hit us! You just took off! Wonderful concert so many years ago. And you played Spectral Mornings that night... Thanks again, friend.
I am so proud you recorded this album in The Netherlands (Hilversum). And so many thanX you played several times in my country, even twice in my hometown Uden in the 80's once in a stadion (Atletiekstadion De Keien) and later on also in De Pul (One of the eldest poppodia of The Netherlands)). For me it was so hard to believe that such a great musician choose to come (twice!) to Uden. And also many thanX for the concert you gave in Tilburg poppodium 013. Wish you all the best, hopefully I will see you once again! Cheers mate!
One of the great guitar instrumentals of all time. Like Gilmour and Richard Wright were the SOUND of Pink Floyd; Steve, you and Tony Banks were THE SOUND of Genesis/the orchestration. Steve, I would love to see you and Tony Banks do a project together - I'd love to see you chaps collaborate on something. When you guys were together, Genesis was at it's most progressive best.
Gets me every time. So glad it’s an instrumental. Nick Magnus’ sounds make for a beautiful backdrop. Bass and pedals with some gorgeous accompanying. And that guitar...
The Rob Reed version of Spectral Mornings with Christina Murphy and David Longdon singing a vocal part that he'd written for the song, is well worth a listen. Also on this version is Nick D'Virgilio, Nick Beggs and of course the great Steve Hackett himself...
Now I'm digging out my Steve Hackett albums (mostly vinyl) and looking up all the songs. I'm really fond of Hope I Don't Wake (great melodies), and the quirky retro Sentimental Institution.
That was really informative, and rings true with what I love about this track, i.e., choice of no vocals (soaring guitar IS the voice), the church organ effect, etc. Great memory of hearing this performed around 1980 in DC's Bayou nightclub, sitting up front, having bass pedals and that church organ effect rattle every inch of my body. So cool.
Thanks for these little 3 minute videos. They're something to look forward to every day. This track is brilliant, saw you touring this album back in 78/79 at the Apollo in Glasgow. That was a great band you had then. It would be nice if you could do one of these videos on "Camino Royale". Cheers!
What's not to like ? It's just a magnificent majestic ending to this very eclectic album, and I'm really glad the LP finishes this way. I immediately loved it when I bought this album in the mid-80's. I love your melodic instrumental pieces where the electric guitar shines. I think we have some mellotron on this as well. As much as I love it, i think Steve did even better with "Twice Around the Sun". And i told that to Steve at least once, when we met years ago, but as everybody seems to want to hear "Spectral Mornings" you don't play "Twice Around" live, because it's a little bit similar. But I think you could play both, really... You should give a chance to this other extraordinary track, 21 years from its release on Darktown.... Maybe one day.
This album was my introduction to you. I had started to learn the drums and my father heard this album playing and bought a copy for me to listen to. I have to say that my favourite track was then, and probably still is now, “Tiger Moths”.
Saw you play this on your 1st tour at Hammersmith Odeon, before it had ever been released, absolutely loved it, just wished that it could go on forever.
Magnifique. Had the pleasure of watching Steve perform this 'Live', four or five times over the last 40 years. A timeless, majestic classic - nice commentary again by Steve.
Growing up, my dad had a mixtape of various prog music. Two tracks that were right next to each other was the Tokyo Tapes version of In the Court of the Crimson King and then Spectral Mornings. For the longest time, I thought this track was a King Crimson one. Thanks for the background stories Steve!
The way the guitar sings on this track is astonishing. I remember a mate of my brother had a fancy Hi Fi back in the day, and went round to hear him playing this at high volume. Unforgettable.
“Bloody musicians, oughta sterilize the lot of ‘em!” (Cough, cough, mutter) Love this song and album. I was very happy you brought the intro back for your last tour.
A dose of Spectral every morning, and I'm flying high all day "naturally". It simply makes you feel good. It's heavenly! It is musical bliss! I know Steve is very proud of that album. Sensational!
Merci Steeve de commenter ta musique, .... formidable artiste, brillant de modestie et de sympathie... un grand monsieur..énorme respect Thank you Steeve for commenting on your music, .... wonderful artist, brilliant in modesty and sympathy ... a great man ... enormous respect
One of my favs of your solist career!!! That guitar part as all of yours is so beautiful. The finest guitar player in the world, only a very special soul could write and play this!
i heard this song, of course I followed also Steve not only Genesis. Ah the crying weeping guitar came back a this time, I heard in the early years of Genesis.
Ha Ha, just waiting for the lyrics to come in... "short people got no reason to live" LOL seriously though, love Steve, one of my all time favs on guitar.
I bought this album on the day it came out and wore out at least two vinyl copies. I've heard you play this countless times with your various band line ups and it still moves me as much as it did in 1979.
you are amazing musician and great person and i´m still can´t understand why the guys from Genesis don´t wanna plays some songs from the 1970-1977 era , yesterday i found a article about Genesis reunion and Mike with Tony said : nobody remember that old songs ( really then people can´t access to youtube , web like google ,spotify ,apple music , this is stupid the reasons and said too : is difficult works with Steve and Peter ) Why ? the reason for me is simple they wanna plays only easy songs and they must be say : our fingers can´t plays this songs (1970-1977) i´m very angry with this guys because this opportunity can be happen again for Phil health maybe he can´t sang anymore this situation sucks !!! you Steve and Peter the best of Genesis today !!! God Bless you and maybe someday you can invites Peter Gabriel for sing a couple songs !
I Really love song to!!! Sorry mi Inglish not very well . Ahora en Español. Está canción es preciosa. Que linda inspiración tuviste . Felicitaciones !! " Congratulations my. Master
Wonderful, Steve. Okay, I think I'm caught up...now how about For Absent Friends, Horizons, Hairless Heart, and Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers...? :-)
Love these little insights from Steve. Spectral Mornings has always been a particular favourite of mine. Just one thing - is there some sort of RUclips related reason why these videos are always less than 3 minutes? I'd like them to be longer :-)
hackett, im 18 and i have been listening for genesis for a year now, i was so sad to find out that they werent playing together anymore then suddenly they announce their first tour in 13 years and their last, im going from iceland with my friends to see the show now i kinda get why they cant have peter but you are still playing these songs, you should be there too for the last show, everyone wants to see you all together for the last time even if it were just for 1 song.
My Favorit song of al time.
Thank you Steve Hackett.👍👍👍
Thank you so much for your work Steve Hackett. Been with you for 40 years and a little more. Thank you for being you.
A true gem . Certainly stands the test of time. Only becomes richer with the passing of time. Thank you Steve !
Absolutely fabulous sound then and now. A true musician that can create timeless pleasure.
Saw Steve’s original Spectral Mornings tour in 1979-80 at Uncle Sam’s in Syracuse NY. The place was packed to the rafters, in awe of this legend. I remember every song like it was yesterday, especially this one and Everyday. Absolutely unforgettable!
It is a beautiful song ! Thank my Lord !
Just listened to the album last night, I loved it, Steve is an underrated genius
My all-time favourite, knowing details of its recording now it's curious that always warms my heart. Thanks Steve!!

Wow. This song was so huge to me. I felt like I was in a dream when I heard this album. Thank you.
My wife and I caught Steve Hackett and band on their last fine performance before they were forced to pack up and go home just as every venue in the US was shutting down. Catch their Firth of Fifth performance at the Allentown, PA Miller Symphony Hall venue. Exquisite, as always.
These videos are the best! I could listen to you all day, Mr. Hackett!

It holds so many memories for me of people and places that aren't there now. Thank you Steve.
Love you Steve,
Please, do Inside and Out !!
Spectral was always played faster live than on the recording. I found the song much more soulful played at a slower tempo. It's a beautiful, mournful melody line. Well done Steve!
Thank you Steve for sharing these memories, it's great to hear the stories behind so much wonderful music
Brilliant piece of work. I play it - loud - whenever I can, and this is the last song to be played during the last ceremony in my life. Love it to bits.

Thank goodness for Progressive Rock! I am really enjoying these little sessions. Thank you Steve!
Gagliarchives ends every show with Spectral Mornings. Now I have been hypnotized even further by this.
I have to say that the track selections in this series have been on point! You're always picking another one of my personal favorites. Thank you so much for taking the time to make something we can look forward to each day!
It’s great to hear your explanations of all the great music you have been involved in. Thank you again.
This track will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Steve!
"Threw him a curve ball". Wow, impressed that someone so British would use a baseball reference :-)
Might also be a concept in cricket?
We use the phrase a lot over here but I for one didn't know it had anything to do with baseball. I bet I'm not alone! :)
A Beautiful masterpiece that is a great intro to walking up the aisle. Cheers Steve. Nee & Sarah.

Steve Hackett and Cornershop both have tracks called Spectral Mornings. I love them both.
I am so proud you recorded this album in The Netherlands (Hilversum). Beautiful song and sound. Love the insight. I am enjoying the old vinyl. Thanks Steve
I really love this series you're doing. Thank you!
Thank goodness you left the changes of no vocals on this masterpiece. Pure perfection as usual Steve. Thank you
