Yes, Haendel was indeed born a German, but by the time he wrote this he was a fully naturalised British citizen; he realised that Britain was so amazing that he decided to become part of this great land himself - even anglicising his name to Handel! From an Australian who is proud of his mother country.
We are also NOT your mother country, you're a part of the commonwealth (although I'm not sure how you get the wealth bit tbh). Australia has an amazing history, yes the Brits invaded (like they did everywhere tbh, as if it was a trend), but the UK is not the motherland of Australia.

Few years back I visited Windsor Castle and in the chapel, as I walked in, this was in full swing, absolutely mesmerising and very powerful, a wall of music. Never will I forget that moment.
I remember hearing it on a headset while taking a tour of Westminster Abbey, and just imagined what the scene might have been like back in June 1953 during the Coronation.
Generally, the 'hook' of the composition is the dramatic "Zadok the priest..." Choral entry point...but couldn't we languish in the prelude of sweet rhythmic strings for hours and hours?...pure musical magic 💥🌟✨
Zadok the Priest (HWV 258) is a coronation anthem composed by George Frideric Handel (1685--1759) using texts from the King James Bible. It is one of the four Coronation Anthems that Handel composed for the coronation of George II of Great Britain in 1727.[1] and has been sung at every subsequent British coronation service. It is traditionally performed during the sovereign's anointing.
@@kirstenschafer1719 It's not that good... Too fast a tempo. That's understandable though, it's a live performance, the idea is more to be "theatric" than accurate.
The 1953 Live Coronation Version From Westminster Abbey ( Also On Utube !! ) Is The Only Version I Know of That Excels This Incredible Performance !!..
my darling (American) wife found this for me in 2012. This has been the greatest ever year to be British. THE GREATEST EVER! . . . and there's something about this performance of Zadok the Priest - in Buckingham Palace's back garden - that sums it all up for me
Sixteen years and just today a YT recommendation. I click every time I see Zadok the Priest. I may be American but the UK is the land of my heritage, . My DNA is predominatly England, Scotland and Wales.
I sang this back in the late 70’s when I was in the Sacred Heart Boy Choir, St. Paul, MN. Our choir director chose pieces that were difficult to sing, but we were up to the task. It’s one of my favorites of the music we sang.
I used to live singing this in the church choir as a small boy. As a choral piece, it is hard to find a better or more enjoyable song to sing. Amazing when you consider it only has 20 or so words to it!
I have sung this with 150 other singers and almost a full orchestra, for the Queen's Coronation celebration on the Isle of Man. Very stirring! We are just ordinary people, not trained singers. But its a great sound. And yes, it does sum up all that's great about Britain, and people in general. There should be more singing like this. Join a choral group - you won't regret it!
What a wonderful piece. The introduction with its constant repetitive rhythm puts the listener in suspense,; it seems something wonderful is about to happen. Then, the vocal entrance is an explosion of glory (forgive me if I give in to feelings of exaltation). (Yes, like "The Crow Guy," I am a total Anglophile.)
Well Said !!....Handel is Brilliant at Setting The Dramatic Atmosphere Prior to The Chorus Erupting With The Opening Verse !!....No-one Could Musically Capture An Epic Moment Like The GREAT HANDEL !!!....
No, it was written for the coronation of HM King George II, invoking Solomon for historical legitimacy. It was one of the last acts of HM King George I, to naturalise as a British citizen Handel and commission this work for the coronation of his son.
Correct but let's not forget that in approx 900 BCE ZADOK THE HIGH PRIEST Annointed KING DAVID and Later his son KING SOLOMON of The UNITED KINGDOM OF ISRAEL Biblical History was remembered by the great Composer GEORGE FREDERICK HANDEL when he was commissioned by KING GEORGE I to compose the Coronation Anthem for the Annointing of his son KING GEORGE II LONG LIVE GREAT BRITAIN HALLELUYAH
Once heard an interview with the director of the Newcastle Opera House who said they opened the new building with this piece and he described with undisguised glee the front row of the audience's blue rinse hairdo's being blown back by the sheer power of the 180 person choir he'd gotten to do it : D
It makes a very big difference - Because for someone from a country that has no ceremonial or historical ties to a song that empowers him and inspires him as much an English King himself would feel during coronation...it makes all the difference!
Excellent Video! We had the honour of receiving her here in Canada this summer! She is as gracious as ever. As a Canadian subject, I hope she continues to reign over all of us!

Why does it make a difference if you are American? Music like this is Universal, it breaks down all barriers of race, ethnicity, religion. It's perfection in musical form.
these things are a double edged blade on one hand without them we would not have such great music and art and at times some insitutions subdue and destory it, but each nation and institution is different

One of the beautiful things about this country is that we accept others and appreciate their differences.
