I've avoided acrylics for years simply because I've not been able to make them look like oils, which are my first love. But now... fine misting! Who knew?!?. I'm so glad you're video 'accidentally' popped up in my feed. I can't wait to try this.
I have recently learned the fine mist water technique when painting northern lights, but I’m happy you’ve helped me to appreciate that it can be used in so many other acrylic applications. I started painting in my 60’s and turned 70 yesterday. Videos like yours are giving me more and more confidence to press forward. I’m enjoying it so much more now that I’m seeing some advancements with each painting. Never too old to learn more and more!!! Thank you

So I’m thrilled to see that Lisa painted this gorgeous raccoon in the meantime! (My icon is a coloured pencil piece I did from a Bonny Snowdon tutorial - it really is never too late!)
It took a small bit of practice, but now my relationship with acrylic paint is vastly improved. I almost cried when I made the softest, puffy, fluffy, wispy clouds ever in my painting career! Lisa, I thank you for this and all you have taught me.

I prefer oils……BUT, you also need ( for your health’s sake) good ventilation. Winter time makes it more difficult because you can’t crank open windows. Acrylics-winter, oils-summer.
I use pure lavender for layer one. Walnut oil for other layers.. Turpenoid natural for brush cleaning and a tiny bit for paint thinner. Non- poisonous . Might need slight ventilation . The lavender very strong odor but NOT. Toxic to breathe or on skin.

But some acrylic brands have removed all heavy metals from their products. With a little research, someone using acrylics over oil is far less likely to be toxic enough to cause any damage. But if you think about it… almost anything in life now can cause some sort of harm… All cleaning sprays, some deodorants, etc. The point is, it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid it… So artists might as well enjoy acrylics indoors and not stress about it…

Overblending is easy to do with this technique. You only need a couple of swipes with that mop brush (or blush/powder brush in my case) to get good results. If you're doing more than 5 swipes with the brush it's probably too much!

Ive been getting a similar effect by using Golden Open white and medium which I mix with my regular soft bodies. Its been a game changer in creating soft transitions. I painted a Bouguereau study that came out just as good as oil.
First time on your channel, and I liked this video as soon as you sprayed your husband in the face, but that raccoon painting was the most incredible acrylic painting I've ever seen!
@@marciabarreto780 I take my paint brush, dip in matte medium, dip it then in my paint, place it on canvas, then lightly add tip of brush to water, go to area with pain and matte medium and work my paint. I can add more medium, water color to get it to move and flow. I hope this helps.
The first time I tried oil paint I lived in very very humid Mississippi. I loved working on it but I was also young and painted really thing for that chunky look and IT TOOK FOREVER to dry. Now I'm in dry mountains so it's much nicer. I still don't love oil, but when I do my pet portraits I like to mix media and love using oil for the background when I'm patient enough
There’s also the need for ventilation and tougher clean up for oils. I was taught to paint in oils years ago but I have used acrylics nearly exclusively for decades now. I actually enjoyed using a dry brush technique with oils because I like a lot of texture, but the reason I use acrylics is because I can do mixed media and experimental water techniques, photo transfers and more that I can’t do with oils. Granted, my work combines drawing techniques, sometimes integrates collage, and doesn’t rely on an overly “painterly” look. I have become accustomed to working in layers in acrylics but the slow drying time was one of the things I liked most and miss about oils. I do use a variety of mediums to get different effects and high quality paint, like Golden or Charvin and acrylics have improved much over the years.
I love a good mop brush. I even use them with oil, which most folks haven't heard of. A cheap alternative to a good, professional mob brush is a makeup mop brush. Essentially the same, and cheaper.
I love the new format! Very entertaining and informative at the same time. The live streams were a bit worn out, people asking the same questions over and over... This painting is beautiful and the tips on blending are great!
Great insight!! Thank you! I started painting about 3 years ago when I took a stray cat in and he had to stay in my garage until he was dewormed due to other pets. I spent 3hrs or so a day with him and was bored. I purchased acrylic paint and brush at the dollar store when they were a $1. Flat canvas too. But I first started painting in the back of pet food boxes with white back grounds. Sucked up a lot of paint. Now I paint w nice acrylics from myartscape and I also tried oils that took 6 months to dry on its own. Now I can attempt to finish it. 😅 Great stuff with the gloss and the water mist!!
So interesting, never heard about this. Easily the most interesting video over the last year :) I do more acrylics on miniatures than canvas and now wonder if this technique could be transferred to that hobby. Never seen any of the best painters use it but looks like it should be possible. Just need a fine mist spray and I guess some small make up brushes for the smoothing.

I didn’t see your spray bottle technique until I worked on the final part but I let everyone know where I learned it. Thank you again. It’s actually making a big difference in my paintings.
I used to use oils, and they are great, but the slow drying issue annoyed me a lot. I briefly switched to watercolor (mainly Gouache). I liked them, but they didn't really suit the style of art I do. My move to using tube acrylics was, at first, a bit of a disappointment. After doing a bit of research, I found out about the difference between student grade and artist grade acrylics. I swapped to using artist grade and the quality difference was obvious. A little while later, I decided to try liquid acrylics. The liquid acrylics I use, were developed primarily for airbrushing. However, I started test them out, using conventional brushes as well. It worked and now my paintings are 90% brush and 10% airbrush. With many, brush only. I do some dry brushing using them, however, for soft blending, I will use the airbrush. For me, the one crucial thing I discovered was not to use water to thin my acrylics. Water tends to break down the binders in the paint and they dry with flat dull look. Fortunately, the acrylics I buy (Createx Wicked), have a purpose made reducer, which does not break the quality/stability of the paint. Not long ago, an artist friend of mine, suggested I try using water based oils. I bought a set of them, but, given my comfort zone is with the liquid acrylics, I have not yet tried the water based oils. Every painting you do, will teach you something new. You will never stop learning your craft. Cheers
I would LOVE for you to try heritage multimedia paint, its acrylic that preforms exactly like oil (still a shorter dry time) uses food grade propylene glycol as an extender medium and is so pleasantly pigmented
I have a fine mister that I use on canvas b4 applying paint as well as on my paint to keep open...BRILLIANT tip on applying while trying to blend...will try that tonite!!!
If you already have an airbrush you already have a sprayer. All you have to do is just use water. It works as well if not better especially for painting and blending in smaller areas.

I use an antique perfume atomizer using Only distilled water. Don't want minerals from drinking water or tap water messing up the tip. This works great as the water comes out like fog, no droplets at all. I use a 1 ounce misting bottle if I want a heavier spray or if it I need to wet my watercolor paint pans. The mist bottle does not have an adjustable nozzle as I have forgotten to adjust other ones back to a mist and... oh sh...oot. lol As always, thank you for posting. Love your work!

Dries faster too than. Linseed oil not toxic like turpentine or mineral spirits

What's the difference between soft body and open?
@@kelb6073 Soft body acrylics are more liquid like in consistency. Open acrylics are another type of acrylic that are designed to stay wet longer.
I’ve been using open medium with good results but this technique looks even easier and cheaper.

The makeup brushes are the best!! They don't shed like art mop brushes. ♥️♥️

A little while later, I decided to try liquid acrylics. The liquid acrylics I use, were developed primarily for airbrushing. However, I started test them out, using conventional brushes as well.
It worked and now my paintings are 90% brush and 10% airbrush. With many, brush only.
I do some dry brushing using them, however, for soft blending, I will use the airbrush.
For me, the one crucial thing I discovered was not to use water to thin my acrylics.
Water tends to break down the binders in the paint and they dry with flat dull look.
Fortunately, the acrylics I buy (Createx Wicked), have a purpose made reducer, which does not break the quality/stability of the paint.
Not long ago, an artist friend of mine, suggested I try using water based oils.
I bought a set of them, but, given my comfort zone is with the liquid acrylics, I have not yet tried the water based oils.
Every painting you do, will teach you something new. You will never stop learning your craft.

I would LOVE for you to try heritage multimedia paint, its acrylic that preforms exactly like oil (still a shorter dry time) uses food grade propylene glycol as an extender medium and is so pleasantly pigmented
Do you find that the Heritage paints are really that different than other professional grade acrylic paints? If so, how?
I have a fine mister that I use on canvas b4 applying paint as well as on my paint to keep open...BRILLIANT tip on applying while trying to blend...will try that tonite!!!
If you already have an airbrush you already have a sprayer. All you have to do is just use water. It works as well if not better especially for painting and blending in smaller areas.

I use an antique perfume atomizer using Only distilled water. Don't want minerals from drinking water or tap water messing up the tip. This works great as the water comes out like fog, no droplets at all. I use a 1 ounce misting bottle if I want a heavier spray or if it I need to wet my watercolor paint pans.
The mist bottle does not have an adjustable nozzle as I have forgotten to adjust other ones back to a mist and... oh sh...oot. lol
