Actually thrash metal stylistically takes a lot from punk, including breakdowns. They're just not as prevelant. And groove metal (Pantera, Machine Head, etc.) are also considered "post thrash" because groove metal and thrash are so similar, groove metal is just slower and typically heavier in tone, atmosphere, and tuning
Also, the speedy parts are just barely coherent. I know its difficult to play that fast, with 2 guitarists, a bassist, an a drummer. (And slayer seems to do a slightly better job that some of the other hideously shitty metal bands I hear. Which is the majority of bands in the genre, apparently) I still wish they had a more clever riff throughout the rest of the song. The intro to this song is undoubtedly one of the most badass metal openings I've heard, though.
