Trouble In The Satay Shop... 🇮🇩

- When in Padang City it's only right to go eat Satay Padang so that's what we did tonight!
The first satay place we went to was awful and the people were just horrid so we walked back to the other side of town to find a different street food spot.
We ended up finding a nice little stall run by a lovely hardworking lady.
We ate so much delicious satay padang and we had a little go at grilling them ourselves...
Then it turned into an episode of shameless as characters started to appear and things got weird.
Was an eventful night in the satay shop 🇮🇩

@@EllisWR Indonesia has hundreds of hundreds of ethnic tribes so it's different every time
As an Indonesian I’m sorry for what happened to you, I got secondhand embarrassment from watching your interactions. If it’s any consolation, it’s not because you’re a foreigner, these kind of people would do the same thing to fellow Indonesians like me because they can tell that I’m not a local. But it’s also a not fair to say “that’s Indonesian for you” because they don’t represent the whole country. I’ve met travelers who’ve been all over Indonesia and treated like family, treated to meals by total strangers, invited to dinners and even important family events. There are bad apples everywhere, you were just unlucky to meet them in your journey here. Please don't let the poor choices of a certain part of the country spoil the way you feel about an entire nation. But don’t hide anything either, you should always say the truth. In fact, you should’ve recorded the situation at the first satay stall, I’m very curious on what had transpired there.
Don't be sorry its not your fault! I only said that because everyday this is happening to us multiple times and it's making us sad aha.
We will have to travel to other parts of the country to see if it is different.
I stopped recording because didn't want to make a really negative video it wasn't worth my energy.
@@EllisWR I understand. It is unfortunate that you’ve encountered a series of unsavory characters right at the beginning of your trip which colored your opinion, and while I implore you to understand that it’s not typical to Indonesia, your experience is your own and I wouldn’t blame you if that it has left a bad taste in your mouth. Before you leave the country, please consider coming over to my neck of the woods. I’ll treat you to a meal and we could hang out with a cold one in our hands. Cheers!

Acceptance towards foreigners are expressed differently amongst Southeast Asians.
I don't want to use hospitality as the generic term here because it will reduce the essence of this collective behaviors into single expectation.
Some countries/ethnicity treat the foreigner as a noble guest, hence they will treat them humbly, often with care as if they are a fragile traveler. They don't hesitate to offer free food for example.
Other like in Java mostly see foreigner as a master, hence they will serve them with the most polite attitude, even as extreme as being slave to particular superiority. They don't behave like this to fellow locals, only to foreigner which they consider come from rich country. This attitude are the widely praised as "Indonesian hospitality" aka mental babu.
And here we are, The Minangkabau of West Sumatra and beyond. We embrace equality and egalitarian above all. So our attitude is just friendliness in equality, may be not kind of hospitality expected by some. We treat people in equal as is ourselves, inferior attitudes totally absent.
Some said the Minangkabau doing business like they don't need tourism. Oh yeah, we don't want to be a slave of tourism. We're pride with who we are, with our culture and character. If others would like to experience it, just come and feel it as it is, no adjustments required. If they like, then be it, and vice versa.
I can't stand being treated like a superior I'm just a normal bloke like everyone else. I just wanna have a chat, eat some food, share nice experiences with people!
Only think we don't stand for is people who only approach us or only speak to us because they want something from us.
@@EllisWR No, I didn't see that you're representing those attitudes. No worries mate :)

Such a nasty woman asking you to pay for her food. This would never happen in Vietnam. Two countries in Southeast Asia, but they feel like completely different planets, lmao
That was the story of The Philippines and Indonesia day in day out non stop nobody has any self respect and to treat guests like that is appalling. Man the people in Vietnam who earn extremely little are super respectful and kind it's crazy, such hardworking honest people.
After visiting these amazing countries it's hard to go somewhere and be treated badly everyday.
@@EllisWR Yeah, I just saw your video in Đồng Hới where you forgot to pay for the bánh mì and coffee. It was around 60k đồng, I think... quite a sum, like 20 pounds in the UK. When you went back to pay, they were just like no worries, it's all good. Super chill couple. I've also sometimes forgotten to pay, and when I came back, people were always understanding and cool so it's not just a thing for white foreigners or any specific group, locals get the friendly treatment too. Unfortunately, beggars and opportunistic people are pretty much everywhere (not only in west Sumatra). You can politely say no, but based on my experience the most effective way is to not respond at all or just pretend you don’t understand and move on.
Yeah we ignore them everywhere we go! The problem here is every person who comes to speak to us and seems friendly, eventually asks us for money then when we say no they walk off and aren't interested in us anymore :/
There seems to be more beggars and greedy people in Padang than other parts of Indonesia though.

And how would you know what ethnic group I'm from?
@@terere8323 yeah and I’ve lived almost my whole life in the other island (possibly your homeland), and guess what? I don’t think your people are any better than us (and I’m trying to put it nicely). It’s also very easy to prove who’s lying here because many other vloggers also shared their bad experiences when they’re visiting other islands in Indonesia. I admit we have bad apples, but every tribes, every ethnic groups in Indonesia have bad apples and statistically we have less criminal activities than some other provinces in Indonesia. We are also the only tribe/ethnic group that actually support gender equality because we’re matrilineal unlike any other tribes/ethnic groups, women are more respected in west Sumatra because of our unique culture.
Additional info for Ellis : we are also the close kins of the Malaysians, because some of our people moved to Malaysia (before it’s called Malaysia) hundreds of years ago and started their new tribes in Negeri Sembilan. Therefore we are also the least likely to throw hate at the Malaysians.

When you choose to stay in a random area, certainly you would meet random people as well. From what I observed in most of your Padang video, your decision to stay around that area (Proklamasi) has made you met with beggar, street kids, street musician etc. No wonder that a couple times you will have those kind of weird interactions. Padang city is vast area, inhabited by diverse people from various place and background (kind of melting pot), and small spot of the city, statistically cannot be use to judge the overall city, or even province.
We've been to plenty of parts of the city and plenty of parts of Sumatra now and sadly not received much hospitality just been harassed all the time :( we wish it wasn't this way but unfortunately it has been
Soon we have videos from batak area where people were lovely though
@@EllisWR Yeah, I wish you will have better experience next time. Overall, tourism is still not a thing in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua, hence most of people from that area thinks that tourist/foreigners are generally rich people that they can use as an ATM.
I will not try to argue with your judgement, because each of experience is personal. Even if you ask Indonesians, every single of them will have their own prejudice towards another ethnicity. So if you're thinking that Batak people are nicer than Minangkabau (based on your sampling), it is totally alright, despite most Indonesians might be disagreed.
However, I still believe that in general race/ethnicity/country of origin should have little contribution to personal characters. Feel free to disagree :)
