  • Arnhem Thunder is the Air Force's largest domestic training exercise for 2021.
Operating out of RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal, approximately 50 aircraft and more than 500 personnel have taken part. It's not just the first time F-35s have deployed to the Northern Territory but the first time Air Combat Group has deployed F-35s, Super Hornets, and Growlers all in one location.
Arnhem Thunder provides Air Force with important force generation training, focusing on high-end collective training and involving multiple Force Element Groups (FEGs).

Beautifully and professionally produced video, showing ranked F/A-18s, a couple of Growlers, some other aircraft... and one F-35A. Sorry, but the question has to be asked. As of March this year, the RAAF had about thirty of them at Williamstown, NSW, less than half the number ordered 18 _years_ ago. How many went to the NT, and how many actually made it off the ground at Tindal or Darwin?

Don't you think that if they managed actually to fly, say, five or six of them in the actual NT, where there's serious weather and red dust, they'd want to show it? On account of that would make them look, you know, credible?

@@chloewinkworthartist You accuse me of being a pseudointellectual, while you use words like "subtextural", not to mention "coercsion", whatever you think that means. Of course it is "they" the government, who have announced the numbers we have. Who else could have made that announcement? And it is "they" the RAAF, who are flying them, not you or I, so therefore not "we". But I said that it's "we" who have, that is, own, these aircraft. That is, I am implicitly including the RAAF among us. I spent some time in my long-ago youth actually getting shot at by communists, and occasionally shooting back. It wasn't much, but can you say the same? What am I? I'm an Aussie who wants the best for this country, who's convinced that the F-35 isn't it. The RAAF will do the best with it that can be done, I'm sure, but that's no great comfort in the face of its defects, which are not the RAAF's fault. We've been sold a pup. A very, very expensive one.

One aircraft was not going to replace at least four or five specialists. Now I _know_ that it wasn't a good idea. It's been "in development" for twenty years, in production for fifteen, and it's still returning totally unacceptable availability, sortie rate and ground-to-air time. The RAAF deserves better. Australia deserves better.

And I was the one who told you that communism was totalitarian. Totalitarianism is what _you're_ about, with your "creating division" nonsense. Logistics? It isn't about logistics, mostly, which refers to means of supply. It's about maintenance requirements and readiness. You're only demonstrating that you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

I think we should retain the F-18 Super hornets (next 15+ years) and even moth ball and retain some of the other F-18, they could be transferred to RAAF Pearce for training (or mothballed) and activated in the event of a major conflict. The capacity for Australia to replace aircraft that are destroyed is limited.

    Great Video!
    Few points.
Why are we not looking at creating underground storage for our fighter aircraft in Darwin and at Richmond airbase? If there was a conflict between the US and China it has been publicly stated by the Chinese government that our defense infrastructure would be the target of long range missile attack.
Second, why has the government not procured a missile defense operating system for all our major cities? It’s not like we can’t afford it especially since we are spending $90 billion on French submarines.
Third, why haven’t we bought or purchased a small aircraft carrier so as to extend our fighter plane capability into the Indo Pacific. With the limited range of fighter planes and even with the new long range missiles that will be utilised I can’t see the point of all our fighter aircraft except as purely defensive systems operating on or close to the Australian mainland. Sure they are still great in terms of a conflict with Indonesia but they don’t pose any immediate threat.
