  • What? A ventriloquist on the radio? Not only was a ventriloquist on the radio but he was one of the most popular shows on the radio at the time. Combined with great guest like WC Fields, The Charlie McCarthy Show was a big hit and is still fun to listen to today! Sit back and enjoy and, just like the olden days, you can still bust a gut at some of the banter and listen to the whole show staring at the dial of an old time radio!!

I remember these broadcasts in the early 1950s as a kid. I was fortunate because I would listen to American (English) and the ones from Mexico city Radio call letters "XEW" in Spanish. (¡Que hermosos recuerdos!) [Beautiful Memories]

Edgar Bergen was a genius - impeccable comic timing with multiple characters going at the same time.

I can still laugh at Bill Fields calling him "A Wood-chigger's snack bar"

when they made these broadcasts, did Edgar actually have Charlie and Mortimer with him? Or did he just make the voices without bothering to keep his mouth closed? Either way, it's pretty interesting how he was a ventriloquist on radio...

There was a small studio audience so Edgar always had his figures with him during the show.

@@DanielJayRobison Makes sense. Voice actors today even keep props with them to get into character.

Bergen also performed on TV with live audiences, plus people around the world scrutinizing him visually. He was talented on so many levels, including as a truth-teller through the guise of vaudevillian shtick.
