Thanks for the memories. My family emigrated from Manchester England to Long Beach, NY in 1953 when I was 11. Lived there until I went off to college and visited occasonally till my parents retired to Florida in the 1970s. Have since returned for high school reunions and to visit friends who still live in the area. Last visited just before Sandy hit. Much has changed but the city still looks reassuringly familiar. Nice to walk along Park Ave. again. One thing that's changed: a house in Long Beach in 1955 could set you back $12K.

Great narrated beach walk and tranquil neighborhood traverse. The million dollar homes are quite impressive, many with beautiful gardens. Also, hats off to the Army Corps of Engineers who completed a $130 million Coastal Storm Risk Reduction project in 2019 that widened the beach to include planting of dune grass on the sand dunes which hopefully provides a degree of added protection against future major storms. Delightful summer walk!

lived in Long Beach from 1999 - 2006, yes, you needed to buy a yearly pass (or a 10 day pass) to go on the beach from usually Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend - at least from the Boardwalk. some buildings on the boardwalk have their own access and a lot of times no one is checking passes or you can give the person sitting there checking passes a cold drink (can of soda, bottle of Snapple) and they will look the other way or not punch your 10 pass card.

Awesome, my grandparents in-law lived in the second to last dark brick apartments before you headed back up to the boardwalk . Their unit was 3/4 up and had the ocean side balcony. They were there probably over 30 years. The view from their balcony was beautiful and the sound of waves never stopped. Front row seat to the ocean 24/7/365. And my ex-wife was born in Long Beach until 6 years old and then Monticello. It was funny, my ex had zero NYC/LI/NJ accent but you couldn't ever understand what her family was saying as they had it so think you would think it was a parody. Early on my ex had to interpret what the hell they were saying.

To those viewers who are not familiar with Long Island: Long Island is a Island East of Manhattan. New York City has 5 Burroughs: Manhatten (this is what people typically call "the city") Bronx, which is north of "the city" originally named for the family who owned the land, Staten Island, which is and island sourh of "the city", Queens which is east of "the city" and has LaGuardia airport (named after one of the Mayors - Fiorella LaGuardia) and JFK airport and Brooklyn (or Kings county). Both Queens & Brooklyn are physically located on Long Island. There is a major road called Cross Island Parkway (in NY Parways are ONLY for cars, no commercial traffic) that is on the New York City boundaries. Once you go east if the Cross Island Parkway you enter Nassau County. The area typically known as "Long Island" has two counties: Nassau & Suffolk.
Long Island was once known as an aviation mecca, where Charles Linbergh left for his historic flight to Paris. Long Island also had very large aviation companies Fairchild who made planes like the A-10 & Grumman who built the Lunar Excersion Module that went to the moon in 1969. Long Island or LI also was home to Sperry corp. Who was a large defense contractor that developed radar, submarine navigation systems and weapons control systems.
These companies employeed 100s of thousands of people with Grumman alone had over 85,000 employess working round the clock.
Slowly these companies left LI or went out of business. Other large companies also left the island becuase of high taxes. There was a lot of engineering and manufacturing talent that also left becuase of thier jobs left. This left a huge void of real jobs. Not to mention the hundreds if small supporting companies that closed as well, even resteraunts, dinners, etc had to close because of all the business that were run 24/7 were gone. Most if the people on LI either work in NYC or have retail jobs.
The North Shore of Nassau county has always been a weslthy area. This is known as the "Gold Coast". The railroad tycoon who owned the NY railways - Vanderbilts had a mansion in the "Gold Coast"
Suffolk county has an area known as "The Hamptons" which is the home is the rich and famous. The south shore of Long Island has many many ocean beaches and in fact one if the largest beaches (Jones Beach) was built by Robert Moses. Suffolk also has a large beach named after him. Jones beach WAS a huge beautiful beach with boardwalks, restraints, salt water pool, and many many activities. All the employees of the beach (which js a state park) wore white bell bottom pants, white shirts and a white navy hat. Robert Moses has also built many other parks on LI and also the parkway that connected them all. Robert Moses was smart to realise that he didnt want his parks to be over run with people from the city, so he purposely made all the bridges of the parkways low, so only cars could get through. LI also had toll booths on the Southern parkway near the town of Valley Stream and charged $0.10 for each car. Now the toll booths are taken down and this area is where NY state police have a presence.
LI is just a bedroom community now, hardly anyone knows thier neighbors anymore and taxes and crime are forever rising. There is only 1 or two shopping malls that are doing ok. Middle class is dwindling rapidly and so is the tax base. The once beautiful beaches are over run with people who just dont care. They come to the beach with cheap Styrofoam coolers they get from 7-11, load it with ice, beer, and food, and then just walk away when they go home. The seagulls pick at the Styrofoam to get at the garbage and them the trash just litters the beach. They even leave thier cheap broken. Each chairs on the beach as well. I see diapers, cans, bottles, empty food containers, tons of plastic all over the beach. These people expect someome ELSE to clean up their garbage. Things that were once beautiful are ruined and destroyed by these people. This is what Robert Moses feared most. This is what sort of people Robert Moses didnt want in his parks. These are dirty disgusting people. This is what has ruined Long Island. No one wants to live anyplace near them. Towns which were VERY nice places to live such as Hempstead, Westbury, Freeport, Roosevelt, Wyandanch, etc are pure garbage now. In sone of those areas gunshots are frequently heard, graffiti is abundant and places are run down and in disrepair. Who wants to sink money into an area that the residents dont give a damn. This was NEVER like this in the 50s & 60s. There are some nice communities still some along the shorelines and they want to keep it that way. I cant blame them, they pay some of the highest taxes in the country. They dont want trash in thier neighborhood. Its not racist its fact. Look at what they did to the previously nIce neighborhoods.
Its a shame to see it all crumble away like that. Is towns like Hicksville are going to be destroued as well.
I LOVE long island, but glad to be away from such garbage.

Residents have to buy a pass, but it is cheaper than non-resident passes. They usually buy season passes

Until people see their own neighborhood on video, they never knew how good it looks. Because of NYC Nassau and Suffolk economy is A1.

You should’ve walked in Long Beach’s east end...There are a lot of restaurants and shops there.

@@ActionKid I think that comment meant the WEST END.. maybe you'd want to come back some time and walk the west end. A lot of people consider the West End to be the true Long Beach. Its very crowded for a suburb, and lots of bars and restaurants.

Long Beach has certainly gotten a lot more upscale in recent years, along with the south shore in general, popular area for people in the finance sector, but mostly whites, its not very diverse. The South Shore is just a really popular area on Long Island. Its amazing how Long Beach has rebounded after Sandy, but it's inevitable there will be another big storm, perhaps worse. Hopefully those new dunes will offer better protection. Unfortunately the towns in the middle of the Island like Hicksville and Mineola aren't seeing this kind of life and business investment, pretty much ghost towns here not much life except for the homeless hanging around (like Midtown these days). I can only guess the south shore areas like Long Beach will become even more coveted as more people move out of NYC to escape the crime and pollution. Looks like a nice visit though, in the evening after 5pm I think they stop charging to get on the beach, I'm sure the sea breeze probably kept things cooler there. The south shore is the place to be in summer. I plan on visiting but probably on a weekday when its less crowded. Of course not everything in the middle of the Island sucks, we do have the Pine Barrens, and some nice parks like Bethpage State Park. Since you do bike I'd recommend doing a video on the Bethpage Bike Trail, goes all the way from Bethpage State Park down to Massapequa Preserve. Of course if you want a more abandoned, undeveloped feel there's Edgewood Preserve in Deer Park, they have hiking & mountain biking. But yeah these days it's all about the $outh $hore as I like to refer to it. At least there were no panhandlers at the TVM at the LIRR station, but again its the south shore, we usually have them hanging around in Mineola and Hicksville. But I can see Long Beach being popular for NYC residents to visit by train, the station is just a short walk to the beach with so much around. Jones Beach requires getting off the LIRR in Freeport (not a safe area) and taking a bus. However you can take the LIRR to Wantagh, there's a bike path from Cedar Creek Park that goes to Jones Beach.

This beach, is the most policed piece of land in america. 5 different government agencies monitor you. They will stop their truck and watch u swim. They will ask what's in your drink. They have dog patrol vehicles on the beach. Sun bathers get ran over every few years due to the police driving so many vehicles on the beach. But the waves are very good, especially when the surf on the rest of long island is too big, and you can park for free and sleep in the car easily enough. You can go on the beach, free if you go before 9am. At 9 they start asking for passes. I'm always in the water by then and then go home when out of the water. And the water, is significantly darker looking then rest of long island, and 4 degrees warmer, in other words not as clean as the rest of long island beaches. But nobody worries about it still fairly clean but it smells more. Not like sewage more like seaweed plants rotting. Studios start at 1600 month and require salary over 100k and perfect credit.
