The Mystery of India's Age Pyramid

  • In many parts of the world, including India, people sometimes report their age or date of birth in a way that is not entirely accurate. They might choose a round number, like 20, 30, or 50, because it's easier to remember or sounds better. This practice is called "age-heaping."
To measure how common this behavior is, an American demographer named George Chandler Whipple created a tool known as Whipple's Index. This index helps to see how much people tend to round their ages or choose more culturally favorable dates of birth.
For instance, if many people in a survey or census report ages ending in 0 or 5 (like 20, 25, 30, 35, etc.), it indicates a high level of age-heaping. Whipple's Index gives a numerical value to this tendency, making it easier for researchers to understand and analyze the accuracy of age reporting.
In India, where cultural and social factors can influence how people report their ages, Whipple's Index can be particularly useful. It helps to ensure that the data collected in surveys and censuses is more accurate and reliable.

Maybe they should ask DOB instead of age.
