What went wrong was that Russia and later on the USA wanted to invade and colonize Afghanistan and now its a big mess.
Or you can say nothing went wrong since they planned to botch it on purpose.
Actually despite what this video says, the list of things that went wrong is fairly short. It's just that fear of censorship from youtube doesn't let people talk about some of them. Such as the details of major cultural diffrences and the philosophy that lead to the current American administration deciding our best option was basically to lose on purpose.
They made a puppet govt that can't do anything unless it's master is pulling the strings

How is it they can give millions sometimes billions of dollars to countries who pretty much hate us yet they want that us money. Out of Afghanistan'14 officially recognized ethnic groups, none are known as Afghani. If you look at the anglicized naming conventions in regards to the "-istan" countries, you have Tajikistan, home of the Tajik; Turkmenistan, home of the Turkmen; Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and so on. The major exception being Pakistan, where it's Pakistani. And in that case, if we're using the dominant ethnic group, both Pakistan and Afghanistan could collectively be Pashtunistan. Because Afghan was originally just another name for the Pashtun.

It's impossible to describe the afgan situation in a 20 minute video. It couldn't be done in a 6 hour video. But it's a great attempt to do so. Lots is missed out or oversimplified but that is to be expected. Its a fair attempt in my opinion. From a British ex soldier who has seen it.

In my opinion, Afghanistan, for nearly almost a decade after our involvement was neglected. As soon as we went to war in Iraq, yeah we did neglect Afghanistan for quite a bit the messed up part was our forces that were there the casualty rates even went higher by that time. The American people literally didn’t hear too much about that. Instead was just a bunch of focus on Iraq. By neglect even shows documentaries, we talk about this war saying it’s a forgotten war.

One of the problem is how they called it a "war on terror". How do you "defeat terror"? You don't go into a war without clear objective and an exit strategy.
First rule of War. Avoid it.

Patriot act of 2001 was that objective from the U.S government's Introduction to fight against terror, which i think it should of had some details into the conversation in the video.

What actually went wrong in afghanistan, was that it affected more on our soil than terrorist whose methods of communication were different in afghanistan.

I was an E4 interpreter (taken off of Signal Collection and put to work doing face to face translation with almost zero training in that aspect) in Iraq in 03 and can't believe we couldn't figure some of these things out. I NEVER spoke with them with my sunglasses on, it should be rude in any culture. Yeah, I could've been killed, but I didn't take my long gun and didn't want a bunch of shooters standing behind me looking tough. Altogether I did pretty well working with the Iraqis. Too bad the Marine Corps didn't want to fork over any money for me to stay in and pass that knowledge along. The US military is like a cosmic horror, incomprehensible and vast and very powerful but kind of dumb and blind to the small things.

Except they're not pushing the facts. We hadn't lost a soldier life in over a year in Afghanistan. Can tell where you stand based on this comment alone and your refusal to accept responsibility as a voter. Our actions set up a functioning government, they were able to set up a military that we were training. Our actions were to liberate a people. Those same people, the fraud in office has abandoned, including our own Americans.

You missed the point. If America wants to give Afghnistan an American style democracy, tghey must give them American style democracy, not giving them somthing else and calling it American style democracy. The Afghans are not fools. They know the darn difference.

@Christopher I am from Nigeria. We are really fond of American style democracy. Other people want it too, albeit with some tweaks here and there. Afghanistan could have had the British model, with a king that has ceremonial powers and the prime minister as the head of government. In fact they once had it like that.
I can learn from the information and story one "Reap what you sow" and second "Mind your own business" always. History keeps repeating itself.

A lot of people don't know this but there actually was a draft, just wasn't the traditional draft. Many referred to it as the "Back Door Draft" or "Stop-loss". From what I understand it gave the government the ability to involuntarily extend a service member's contract up to their contractually agreed end of service. So rather someone doing a 6 by 2 (6 active years, 2 IRR) they'd be forced to do all 8 active years rather than going IRR
That's not new. Your example of the 6 years active and 2 years IRR IS what was being called the "backdoor draft." There's never been (at least in the last few decades) a "true" 4 year enlistment that you always heard about on the recruiting commercials. Every enlistment was (and still is) always 8 years- the question was just "how much of that do I do on Active Duty, how much on IRR?" My initial enlistment contract was for "6 years." But, like your example, that was actually 6 years active, 2 years IRR. The IRR is simply this: you no longer have to work for the Army, you no longer receive benefits from the Army, the Army is no longer responsible for you, BUT for those 2 years, your name is on the list of people who will be the first to be called back up in an emergency or because of a shortage of troops. And it's explained to everyone who enlists. Stop-loss is a different thing altogether. Getting "stop-lossed" means you're CURRENTLY on Active Duty, but your unit can't afford to lose you because they don't have a replacement inbound, so they cancel your orders to leave- whether it's "leave the Army" or "leave this base and PCS (Permanent Change of Station) to your next Active Duty unit." A friend of mine was stop-lossed while she was still on Active Duty. She was stationed at Ft. Bragg and about to move to Ft. Lewis. The 82nd came down on deployment orders and her company didn't have anyone to replace her, so they cancelled her PCS orders- they "stopped" themselves from "losing" her. 3 months after the deployment, her orders became active again and she moved to Ft. Lewis. A Draft, by comparison, is when you take someone who is not in military service, has never BEEN in military service, has never been TRAINED by the military, and may not have any intention to ever BE IN military service, select them at random, and press them into military service against their will. No agreement. No warning. No prior contract. Getting reactivate while you're on IRR, or stop-lossed before you get out are both rough things to deal with; but referring to either one as a Draft is GROSSLY inaccurate and misleading.

I remember being alarmed when we started making moves to permanently occupy Afghanistan and engage in "nation building". "Hey didn't we just prove it was a bad idea to try to occupy Afghanistan like a decade ago?" "Nah it'll be fine..."

What a lie No empire that invaded Afghan caused their own empire to fall because of invasion. All those empires just pulled out and withdrawed on their own they weren’t Driven out by superior fire power ever. The Americans Even had Less Dead members compared to the Afghans casualties and leaders lost.
I think one of the greatest mistakes was failing to understand that most Afghans identify from a clan and tribal point of view and so a blanket strategy would never have worked. Actually this war would have been prevented with a simple agreement between the US and USSR just like so many other wars like the Vietnam war.
Right. As another Infographics video showed, Afghanistan is really like a Non-Country. It's a bunch of different clans and ethnicities that just happened to grouped together in a single place and has a label slapped on it. Without this clear understanding we (the US) were lost from the start

I'll stand by our mujahideen brothers until the end.
Disregarding the 80s (and specifically the introduction of the stinger rocket to the mujahideen which was a complete Game changer for the insurgents), there is one critical thing that went wrong over the past 20 years. Politicians.
The US Military did it's job amazingly even with the insane ROE placed upon it, which were constantly changing and became ever more restricted.
If the cuffs had been taken off our military, the whole affair would have been over with (THE RIGHT WAY) exponentially faster. The US in Afghanistan is the equivalent of that generation's Vietnam, it was a perfect example of what happens when civilian leadership doesn't listen to the commanders on the ground.
The ISI did dot not need to invite Pashtuns into Pakistan. The Pashtuns in Afghanistan has never recognized that arbitrary British border that divide the Pashtuns.

@ꫝarry K That border as you may know is called the Durand Line was established 1893 by the British. Named after the British diplomat Mortimer Durand. No Afghanistan government of any stripe has recognized it.

US falied mostly because of lack of long-time strategy, lack of soft power associated with development support and lack of strict attitude to corruption. Their lack of understanding of local issues, especially organisational ones, was also serious reason of the fail.
Also new commanders almost tried to reinvent the wheel on what should be done each time…

Americans weren't even comparatively brutal to russians. Their intervention was caused by terrorist attacks. I don't justify war crimes but it wasn't even comparable scale to russian war crimes. I'm from Poland and a lot of older people said me that russians were more brutal and sadistic than even nazis!

Saddam Hussein murdered thousands of Kurds, using chemical weapons, he started several wars himself! With Kuwait, Iran. His Shia ethno-fascist state was worse than US-led intervention - considering that most of deaths were caused by civil war.
Why Palestinians didn't accept peace deals? Israel offered them two state solution but they refused several times. Hamas and Hezbollah rule PA in totalitarian course, with terror. EU spend the most of money to humanitarian help for Palestinian why Muslim brothers, especially from Iran, support only terrorism and spread anti-Semitic hatred! It causes poverty of Palestinians. As an Afghan, I find this video very educating and intriguing, thank you. However, the illustrations show the Afghan people inaccurately. Afghanistan has over 20+ ethnic groups, with its people descending from regions of Scandinavia to Eastern Asia. The standard brown skin, dark hair depiction is heavily stereotypical and doesn’t accurately highlight how most Afghans look. Afghanistan is located in Central Asia, so its people have features that resonate with Middle Eastern, East Asian and South Asian people too. No hate, I just wanted to point out that Afghans come in all skin colours and features and that our diversity and mixed heritage is what makes Afghans, Afghans

Got out of the Army in 98. Was 23. Was 26 when 9/11 happened. I knew my history. I knew the Russians lost. I told my gf then now Wife. “ The Russians lost. Why would the USA do better?” I suffered with PTSD from 9/11 vets and being envious about seeing combat. When the fall of Afghanistan happened. I was validated and right. My PTSD went away. I pity 9/11 vets for a waste of a lost cause..

s an Afghan who has seen this happen over the last 20 years, I can say that 80% of the information in this video is accurate.The point of this video is that showing this edema ruthlessly gives them a sense of power.

You are totally wrong. Didn't Pakistan help the Taliban during the US occupation of Afghanistan? Of course they did. Even after the Americans left, the Pakistan government helped the Taliban to capture the Panjshir valley.

You said pakistan wanted afghanistan as buffer against the hostile iran, wrong approach 1. Iran was the first country to recognize Pakistan so they are friends not hostile 2. How can Afghanistan be buffer as Iran and Pakistan's borders are adjacent
Pakistan always wanted unstable undemocratic Afghanistan as their ally rather than Democratic Afghanistan that would support India.

It is true what is said at the end of the video the blame is not on neither administration. The war in Afghanistan had to end in what ever way. This is literally all cover up for Biden. American citizens could easily have been evacuated from Kabul when Biden was told that a takeover is imminent. But he didn't, and he instead lied saying it will never happen. Then lied saying there was no citizens in Afghanistan that wanted to come back.

That's the logical reasoning of both this video and the "How we could have won Vietnam" video. The reality is, you never know how Quarterback B would have really played out, things may have been much catastrophically worse with Quarterback B for reasons unknown to the creators of these videos.
We've avoided World War 3 so far, and we should be happy with that.
As always this channel always gets things wrong but still better than a lot of others
