      I'm not saying these are the right reasons, but Afghanistan has been traditionally a target as a passageway between the west and the far east, especially the Khyber pass. They called it "the gateway to India" In modern times, Afghanistan has a great deal of resources like rare earth metals.

    Thank you for this detailed and informative video.
    All of these challenges to a foreign power trying to control Afghanistan should have been clear to the U.S. in 2001, based on Russia's experiences there in the 1980s. And yet we still went in and stayed there for 20 years, thinking in our arrogance that we could do better.
    As a nation, I hope we will learn from this folly and focus our efforts closer to home, where they are needed most. I blame both political parties for getting us into and keeping us involved in an unwinnable situation in an unconquerable country for far too many years.

      Unless they're Greek, North Indian, Iranian, Turkic, Arabic, Huns, or Scythians. The country was basically ruled by Greeks for most of the classical period and spent most of its history as a frontier for various Iranian empires before it was conquered by Turkic/Mongolian empires for nearly all of the medieval and modern period, ironically it mainly gained independence thanks to Russian and British imperialism and their squabbling made Afghanistan more valuable as a border state than a colony so neither of them tried too hard to secure it since Russia mainly just wanted to keep the British out of Central Asia and the British mainly just wanted to keep raiders and the Russians out of India but neither of them really wanted Afghanistan all that much.

    To conquer a foreign land maybe an easy task however one must conquer hearts and mind to gain and maintain forever control. You can’t make friends if your intentions aren’t friendly and even if you do succeed in making friends while hiding bad intentions, it simply won’t last long.
    Using strength and force: even cage fighters boxing, wrestling etc.. you may win a match or two but to maintain championship you must remain forever in the ring and continue to win every single match or else you will kicked out and stripped off by some unexpected opponent or you retire l(escape).
    For every relationship diplomatic or civil, international or domestic the basic and fundamental ingredients are the same and as follows: mutual respect, honesty, fairness, compromise, independence, loyalty, faithfulness and mutual prosperity. Yes i understand it can only happen to take place in a perfect world and where leaders and policy influencers and makers are peace thinking and intellectual individuals! On the contrary, the previous government under Ashraf Ghani was a proxy of the invading force (in this case the United States), and held little if any legitimacy among the people of Afghanistan. It collapsed because no one outside of Ghani’s inner circle of US-backed strongmen actually believed in their cause, least of all the rank and file soldiers who were directly fighting the Taliban. If anything the government dissolving before the Taliban even got a chance to negotiate with them only reinforces the legacy of Afghanistan being difficult for foreign occupiers to pacify.

      People tend to ignore the Greek, North Indian, Iranian, Turkic, Arabic, Huns, or Scythians who all conquered the country successfully. The country as we picture it today is largely a 19th century invention, it's spent most of its history as a frontier for Iranian and Indian empires since it's basically just a highway between Northern India and Iran which is part of why Pashtuns were scattered randomly from eastern Iran across Afghanistan north into the other -stan countries like Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan east into Pakistan and party way into India.
      Really the only countries to truly fail in Afghanistan failed in part because they never sought to conquer it but rather create a nation out of nothing. The British tried to install their usual colonial puppet ruler and got kicked out, the Russians/Soviets started a massive civil war through shitty policies and put an unpopular dictator in power as a puppet and stabbed him in the back, then the Americans tried to sort out a 50 year long civil war while also contending with building a modern state out of a medieval government based around tribal affiliations and bizarre social customs that few even in the region understand.
      The British, Russians, and even the Americans are all actually great at conquest since that's fundamentally different than creating a state out of nothing. The Russians and Americans for example were great at conquering a region, forcing the locals out and assimilating those who remained, move in settlers from your ethnic group in to replace the locals and set up your own people to run the new state. Building a state from nothing though is more complicated: you need to find skilled administrators in a country that cant run itself, train technicians and administrators to handle every aspect of running a modern state, you need to get the citizens on board, you have to set up a government that can work for the local area/local culture, you need to mold the ideals of the people to conform to at least some of your own values as well to keep the country friendly to you, you need to prevent separatist movements, revolutions, and coups, build a functioning police force and military, build a self sustaining economy out of some goat herders and subsistence farmers, create commerce and trade out of nothing, and do about a million other things and looking at post colonial Africa we can see just how many hurdles that involves. It's a process that often takes decades even with help inside and outside the country: it took Japan (an already peaceful, centralized state with a relatively well education population, and a thriving culture and sustainable economy) around 15 years to really break off the last dregs of the Edo period, then it took around 30 years of breakneck speed reforms to turn the country from a late medieval/early modern country into a modern state and even then they devolved into a military dictatorship pretty quickly once they lost a skilled statesman like emperor Meiji.

    I strangely had this way of thinking...
    If building a modern nation-state concept in Afghanistan is impossible, should we just try the model of a tribal confederation? It could've worked out in the framework of Switzerland. Instead of cantons, the administrative 'division' could've just been built up on the basis of ethnicity. There will be no single head of state, but a Supreme Loya Jirga (if it's what its called) composed of representatives from the Tajiks, the Uzbeks, the Pashtuns, and other ethnicities will be the collective heads of state of Afghanistan (similar to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR or the Federal Council of Switzerland). Then we'll call it the Bactrian Confederation (in my opinion a rather neutral name deriving from the ancient Persian province covering roughly the modern-day territory of Afghanistan) since Afghanistan would imply an ethnic dominance of Afghans/Pashtuns (doesn't sit well considering the experiences of many states). It better be a neutral state similar to the Swiss so that everyone can just fucking mind their own businesses. Each of the ethnicities will have a sort of wide autonomy similar to the cantons of Switzerland, with issues of nationwide impact being discussed at a sort of federal parliament in either Kabul or Herat. This allows them the tribal affiliation they had always wanted, to be represented commonly federationwide only in foreign affairs (a single Bactrian foreign ministry/embassy) and common military issues (which as consequence, all weapons should be held by the federal authorities while forbidding each of the ethnicities from having their own means to wage war or conflict).
    But that's just my thinking. I'm in no way an Afghan tho...

    • @pollypoppin2793
      @pollypoppin2793 2 года назад +2

      Currently ethnic divisions have become wider and more popular in Afghanistan and it seems that it will go into civil war sooner or later. Maybe in another decade or two we will see Afghanistan split into independent ethnic states.

    • @mastermaseeh5949
      @mastermaseeh5949 2 месяца назад

      You can't divide Afghanistan based on ethnic groups. It's mixed as hell, almost every province contains tajiks and pashtuns.
      Provinces like kunduz are 30% pashtuns, 30% uzbeks and 30% tajiks. There is very provinces with over 95% of the same ethnic group. And most importantly, ethnonationalism doesn't exist in Afghanistan or the whole South-Central Asia region. If pashtuns wanted a separate state they would form it out of Pakistan first, it's clear they don't. Central Asian countries are just slaves of the Russians and we have nothing to do with them.
