Just a personal theory, but think the fading interest in standard is tied to the increased frequency of set releases. Standard sets were once the primary product released. There was supplemental product, but the only non-standard legal full set releases (that I can recall) were the two UN sets. So all eyes were on standard set releases looking for new powerful cards, reprints, value, EVERYTHING. Now we get commander legends, modern horizons, and masters sets. You can largely ignore standard sets if you don't want to play that format. Maybe an important reprint or broken card will come out, but you no longer need to watch standard sets diligently.

    • @nottsfhj
      @nottsfhj Год назад +21

And there's so much "just for commander" stuff printed elsewhere, even if you miss an important card it doesn't really matter... You can only play 99 after all!

Problem is; in every Standard product there are cards that are clearly designed for a format that isn't Standard. Along side the ability to pull Commander cards from packs, making your whole pack an even bigger dud if you not pulling the top-3 cards from the set. Also, in the old days you had your yearly Core set, and than a block of 3. If you didn't like the block, you either sat it out till the new Core Set or played Modern with your old cards. Now, you have to keep on your toes because even before you open your first pack, they already revealing the next set. Which isn't in the same block, same art style, same story telling so maybe there is something in it that hits all the marks for you. You cannot do the old "I took a break in Theros-block" any more.

vince absolutely hits the nail on the head near the end with the commander-ification of standard. having standard sets just be a vehicle with which to dump more designed for commander cards onto players is SO detrimental to standard. you telling me anyone ever believed smothering tithe was meant for standard? and that was before eldraine and the brawlmanders being forced into standard. funnily enough, i reckoned they should've actually put out brawl decks each rotation if they ever had any interest in keeping brawl around. by only ever doing one round of them (dumping a bunch of broken commanders onto formats in the process) and never bothering with more, brawl really was the first time wotc was like "commander makes money, lets only ever focus on commander now- forget every other format, let them crumble because people only ever spend money on commander". the pandemic stopping in person events only exacerbated their loss of interest in any paper format other than commander. wotc interfering in commander beyond one round of pre-cons a year made every format worse (commander included) because dumping a bunch of barely tested bombs onto formats every month certainly doesnt improve them

Finally someone says that the "Commanderification" of standard is part of a broken gameplay and in people losing interest in the format. And since now there are an excess of products the Commander cards can be a part of them, while appearing very occasionally on Standard.
I'll also note that the power balance between colors should be analyzed more in depth to balance the overall gameplay of the format.

As someone who used to play a lot of paper magic and spent a lot of time playing at local game stores' Friday night tournaments. I think you guys came up with good solutions to incentive people to play locally. I got back into magic through Arena and would love a reason to buy more physical cards and go into stores that would add value to my primary entertainment source.
I think I am repeating the popular opinion as well when I say, I would love to have pro tour and more tournaments again. I loved watching the Star City table one camera and people who were better than me play the game. I prefer that to searching for a streamer who has both the skills to entertain an audience and play at a high level.

I am in the *exact* same boat. I’m *dying* to go play the Standard I know and love from the “good ol’ days”. (Maybe even back to Onslaught/Mirrodin.) I have no incentive to do so. Why bother? Nobody cares about Standard anymore.
I come from a tight-knit community of Gen-X “long-haulers” ($80k+ worth of cards in my group.) They are all practically in mourning over the death of this wonderful game.
That death was entirely caused by the watering down of the Standard format in favor of other formats.
Standard was our life. The Life. Of Magic: The Gathering. None of us ever made it to the Pro Tour, but the **aspiration** was what made us open our wallets every time. Even as an 11-year old child, I managed to spend an insane amount of money on cards. Because I played: Standard.
Standard was the prestige format. The adventure of trying to play in the most competitive (and most rewarding) format, was a roller coaster of intense emotion. Those games *mattered*. The entire hobby for most of us was: casual play during the week with your buddies to “test out” your deck. All in service to Friday Night Magic. It created a reliable revolving-door community of “love-hate” fans of the game.
Standard used to be the “sport” of Magic. The “sport” for the nerds. You may not make it to the NBA, but if you study the cards hard enough and spend your money wisely… you might make it to the Pro Tour.
When that aspiration died. So did the “cash cow”. Other formats are “fine”, but Standard has to be in the driver’s seat. Standard drove this game for nearly 3 decades. Now the “long-haulers” are **running** for the hills because they’ve amassed a lifetime in a hobby produced by a company they no longer trust and now actively despise, because WotC has slowly stripped away all of the appeal.

Wotc will never bring back sponsored events, the greed factor for profits won't allow for frivolous spending of wotc assets going forward. They've already removed msrp, increased pricing and reduced the amount of product you get for your money, cut the throats of the brick and mortar stores by selling direct to consumers with THE absolute worst order, payment, and shipping services ever (Secret Lair) with over a year wait time, and the relentless pace of sub-standard produced card sets, it's clear to me that it's now about the profit margin for a billion dollar company with no soul for the game the sell.

You can't convince them to stop trying to double profits every year. That is their only objective as a publicly traded corporation and in fact they are legally required to do that. If stock prices sink, shareholders can and do sue the corporation. It is just the reality of publicly traded companies even if every single person in Wizards of the Coast cared and wanted to improve the quality of the product rather than the margins they can't. They are legally required to be apathetic towards the game and you. Vote with your wallet not your words, you got to and everyone that has a problem with it has to stop buying packs that do not meet our standards or they will never change.

I genuinely think if they become very clear with their banning system, most of the issue of "but I put $400 for my playset of this op card!" gets fixed
Imagine this: every time a tournament, gp or whatnot, happens and a card is showcased to be very obviously overpowered, the first thing people expect is "yeah that's definitely getting banned"
Hell, YUGIOH does this to a great extent!!! I play yugioh as well as magic and a lot of the banning that happens is expected
We see a card breaking the format after a tournament and we go "yeah that's getting banned. Not going to invest in it"
    And they do ban it
And practically no one's sad other than the people that aren't aware that that's the culture
But guess what, it's so frequent that it's so easy for even new players to know this
Set. A. Precedent. And most issues get cleared!

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Год назад +1

But then they can't ban Uro instead of Omnath and still sell packs of Zendikar to make money. Granted, I'm speaking specifically about the Modern format here, because I do think that Omnath got banned in Standard, but I don't know for sure because I don't follow it.
With regards to Modern though, Omnath has become an absolute nuisance in the current meta. It isn't even that he is too powerful on his own. It's that he replaces himself as you play him, gives access to life gain and mana ramp in a format littered with fetchlands, and now also pitches to the Elemental Incarnation cycle.
Wizards would rather ban old cards most of the time than to ever have to ban a new card from the newest set. So the Uro/Omnath money tribal piles saw Uro take the hit since Ikoria was already 6 months old by that point, and Omnath was the new shiny toy.
So if the precedent was, "Hey, if this card becomes clearly dominant, it gets banned," that might help. But the reality is that there are fundamental rules ingrained into the current 6th Edition ruleset that arguably hurt the game worse than slow bannings, or banning around new cards to save face and, more importantly, make bundles of money.
There are also issues with consistency becoming too high for all of these decks, even in Standard with the access given to cards that dig 5+ deep. Having 4 ofs for every format (but Commander obviously) drives up the cost of the deck, which keeps a lot of players away, but worse, it creates far too high a level of consistency for finding and executing your chosen gameplan. One of the easiest ways to solve both of these problems is to go to a 3 card max. It makes decks less expensive. It makes decks less consistent and should help with more varied play experiences. And perhaps best of all, it frees up deck slots to help with diversity of building, even within the same archetype.
So although your idea of following the YGO banning practice could help a but, the reality is that as far as traditional 1v1 competitive Magic goes, there are a lot more issues than just how to handle bans.

I am NEW to MTG (female at 38 years) - helps to destress my brain after intense uni study... Straight up - it seems like WotC are double dipping. I am about to purchase physical cards because I want to own them, but I cannot play them. Game stores in Australia have tanked (ignoring video gaming - which I have been all my life), to purchase - I buy from online game stores in Australia. WotC PUSH Amazon from the looks of it... I have NO idea where to really play and learn physical. So, Arena wins out. We drop money there to score cards to play, because physical is tanking (due to - less F2F stores). Arena - the CASH COW - not providing Arena codes in all recent physical packs.
Again - I am so new - and all I can see is that there is little return. Prof - I am on board when you mentioned the codes - allowing players to opt for either game play (when it suits).
    Please remember - NEWB here.
With a little more education - I may need to retract this comment. From a fresh perspective though, this is how it appears...
This channel is by far my favourite to watch - even though I can't play (will need to teach a friend I think). Arena is fun for a bit - but... I don't want to grind a whole day just for a digital pack. Prefer to buy a physical pack (love the real deal) and have a code to have those cards on Arena...
    Cheers everyone!

Oh gosh... further in... There is NO way that they will expand the team - because - that is an expense... They presently do not appear to have enough employed to ensure testing (happy to later ban - why... cha ching $$$). Forcing players to drop cards and pickup others. I will never play standard outside of MTGA.
I would LOVE for MTG to become HUGE (again) - it looks like, I missed that boat. Best way to have this though - is to get arena codes in packs or decks. Yup, just like pokemon... They need to keep the physical game alive - but... maybe they are hoping for it to dwindle.
WotC is bank-rolling its entire playing community. Yes - this is the capitalism world at play... but really? What about that 11% increase due to come in? I can justify a little of it - but... Is it WotC's wish to make this game elitist - and only for those with a high disposable income? They have scored HUGE profits - even through the pandemic. Something about all of this is really blocking me from getting too involved.

At the risk of being crass, I do think standard inherently suffers from a few extra monetary barriers compared to commander & that'll always hurt it for casuals (like me). I'm much more willing to spend $30-50 upgrading a commander precon that I know will be playable forever than splurging to buy cards that'll rotate out. Even besides that, it's a rough sell to need four copies of certain marquis cards rather than just one.
Part of the reason I enjoy standard on MTGA is not having to put real money in to keep up with rotations.

Lots of people say that the cost of standard is a big reason why they don't play standard. But when standard was huge people literally said the same thing, but still played over Modern, Legacy etc.
Pioneer is just as expensive as Standard was and people like to say its a cheaper way to play. Also just anecdotally, with the upcoming Pioneer Regionals, all other formats at my local game store (except EDH) have pretty much died off and now Pioneer is played twice a week.

I think the difference is that there are other options now. There are several non-rotating formats, commander is bigger than ever, etc. So people are just gravitating toward the formats that appeal to them. There isn't a problem with standard in the sense that there's anything to fix, the issue is inherent in standard. it's expensive and it rotates quickly. Most people prefer a different format.

I fell in love with control decks and the biggest issue with Standard is the sheer fact that it lacks variety in the meta. Each season that's come out since my good control decks have become unplayable due to rotation... the cards you need are super hard to find or they cost an arm and a leg if you're playing paper. To make a top tier aggro or ramp deck or mono white it costs nothing, but a control or jank deck on the same level, costs a lot more (more rares and mythics are required) if they gave control and jank more cards from the get go... standard would be amazing.

    How to Fix Standard?
    1) FREE, prize supported FNM.

My point is that a good Core Set should have simple, proven cards. Murder and Cancel get in on the low-end of power, Lightning Bolt @ (U) can get it at the high end. If you print Lightning Strike, players know they're not getting the best. But if you print Lightning Bolt, they know they're getting the best. Yes, it can be fixed if WOTC is willing to design cards for Standard-only and Commander-only. Trying to satisfy two divergent play formats either screws one format over the other (In this case, Standard and other Standard-type formats lose to the more popular Commander.), Or it makes no one happy in any format because the cards are poor designed and/or playtested and result in after the fact bannings.
In the end, WOTC needs to decide how to go forward besides passively sitting by and milling out cards without any idea of tomorrow.

As a new MTG player, I find it interesting that veteran players have been upset with standard and that commander has become so popular. I’ve been having a blast playing standard and I want nothing to do with commander because all these veteran players argue about how it “should” be played and it just seems toxic to me. I don’t want to have a 20 minute discussion become a game starts about power levels and this other stuff. I’m good, could care less about commander. But standard has really gotten me into mtg. And drafting is awesome too. I come from Pokémon tcg and there’s no drafting format and I find it fascinating.

      Hey, that’s great!
Though I do play commander, I don’t see it as toxic, granted, I personally have never experienced the sentiment that people should play commander “this or that way”, but the reason why that’s a thing is because power level can affect enjoyment at a table.
If two people come to the table with pre-cons, and then a third player comes with their teched out three color deck, and then the fourth player just comes with their two color casual deck: there is going to be a lot of groaning
EDIT: And my problem with Standard is the rotation, and having to keep up with dozens of cards, it’s overwhelming to me, especially since I don’t really have time to look through all these somewhat boring new cards. I like eternal formats because I have more time to consider what cards and what decks I’d like to engage with

I think the best way to fix the scene is this. Get rid of formats based off of sets. Have players reference some sort of market data. Like the average of Cardkingdom, channel fireball and starcity for each card in their deck. Declare tournaments to have a dollar maximim per deck. The first of every month the data can be reset. So your not having to check you deck every day you go to play. You could have tournaments from $20 limits all the way up to taking out a mortage on your home. Get rid of restricted list as well. With the dollar limit. Drawling cards from the entire history. The game would be more dynamic. So much more to choose from. Also as prices rise and fall what in each would change. So Penny dreadful but with very low limits to very high limits. Wizards could have a link on their site where you can go to get the average at the start of the month for each card. Not wizards setting price of cards. Just a place everyone can reference and be on same page. And cut sets down to 2 or 3 a year. Plus one creative set like jumpstart for example.

This will likely be lost to time but I have just got into magic and have been diving through TCC videos.
As a new magic player I have really enjoyed playing with the current sets (felt much more manageable to start with a limited number). Learning decks through playing matches on Arena has been great. So far Mono-Blue Tempo, Azorius Soldiers and Gruul Werewolves have been the primary Standard decks that I have played.
Now that I have started to purchase paper I feel more drawn to Pioneer and Pauper since they are non-rotating. While I have bought the paper version of my soldiers deck this is a deck that mostly won't rotate out and that I feel could be tweaked to be good in Pioneer. Not sure how much I'll stick with Standard following the next rotation as I don't find the Phyrexian cards aesthetically appealing. I'll give the new set a look through on arena but I will hold off on getting any paper copies for now.

Older cards should be the ban target if there are to be bans but one of the biggest things they can do to stop banning is play test the cards and if there is an interaction that runs away with the game (too powerful for example or infinite turns) put the new card into a set that comes out AFTER the old card is out of rotation for standard. No bans ever in standard this way.
