Hiking the Cumbria Way 2024 - a tough start!

- This is solo backpacking the Cumbria Way 2024. The thru hiking trail starts in Ulverston, South of the Lake District National Park and finishes in the North at Carlisle. I took I my backpacking and camping gear with me so I was self-sufficient. I saved the wild camping for Day 2 but I stayed at an excellent camping uk site on Day 1.
I covered 27 miles on Day 1 ending up at Bays Brown Campsite in Chapel Stile in the Langdales. This location is a beautiful part of the Lake District with magnificent 360 views.

Initially the Cumbrian Way takes you through farmland and livestock fields until you get closer to Coniston Water. From here the best hiking trails really start.
The landscape changes the closer you get to Coniston, from rolling hills to the vast Coniston Water and then the mountains.
I stopped for lunch at Coniston, had a pint of Cumbria Way at the Crown Inn and then made my way to Elterwater via Skelwith Force. I stopped for some refreshments at the Britannia Inn and Wainwright Inn.
Lastly I made my way to the Chapel Stile where I stopped at the Bays Brown Campsite in the Langdales. I've been here before and it must be one of the most scenic camping sites in the UK.
After struggling with hayfever, a shower did me the world of good and I felt amazing!
Other campers were very quiet so I got a good night's sleep ready for the epic Day 2 that was to come.
The backpacking and camping gear I took is listed below:
I buy my 3F UL Gear tents from Camperlists who stock all variants. All prices includes VAT and Duty and they're all genuine unlike many copies on AliExpress and Amazon.

Was great to meet you on this trek! Still can't believe you managed to smash this out in 3 days! You've made fans out of us for sure👍 Genuine guy, and for my sons first hike, to meet a proper quality youtuber, it made his hike more memorable. Thanks again, looking forward to the next part!!🍻
Cheers Matt, you get a mention in my next vid 😁
"Will be double-dropping these two lattes" - Love it ! ;)
Fantastic! I just couldn't drink pints and walk so fast you must be in very good shape.
The pints will have actually sped him up aslong as your not to drunk alchol is rocket fuel theres a reason coal miners used it😂
Great vid andy,, that wasn't you last Monday or Tuesday was it at the britannia inn Elterwater having a burger?, if so I was one of the three mountain bikers talking to you,,
Probably wasn't you, haha,,
Great vid mate, I did some of that on the bike last week,, beautiful up there,
I went Wednesday to Friday 👍
Hi Andy, great stuff, looks like you had the same weather as when you did the WHW. 😀
It’s a cracking trail, I did it at the beginning of May over 5 days. Loved every minute of it. 😀🥾⛰🏕️
I’ve waited so long to find this weather window. I got lucky with the WHW, but this was months patiently waiting for the perfect weather ☀️ I loved every minute of it! 5 days would have been much more sensible.
Nice video Andy, glad to see you back on the trail. Glad to see you are now going more light weight on your gear. The MO is a fantastic pack, wouldn't use anything else. Have used the lanshan for many trips but have now went to the X-Mid, great tent. Still too many bags lol keep up the good work. Oh! thanks for the mention on your last upload. Stay safe
Hi Ed, this is the first time out in the Pro 4 Season. I’ve used the Standard 4 Season before and really like it. Loads of space! I used that cheap pack liner you two were talking about (plus some extra bags 😂).
Just completed this today. Done it in 4 days and a morning. Fair play to complete it in 3 days. Some going!!!
"The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun." -🌅🌆
Awesome video Andy can't wait for the rest of the episodes 👍
Thanks 👍
Wow the views from that camp site are stunning
Not bad for a tenner!
Nice video Andy, clocking up some serious miles this year mate 🥾🥾
Well done Andy, can't believe you covered that much distamce on day 1, I only managed to get to Coniston Hall on Day 1 and I was done, subscribed and looking forward to the next episode🙂
I’m pleased you are like me who can’t resist a good pub!! I’m planning a dog South West Coast Path week…done a bit twice before, and it’s got my juices flowing
Wow great skills getting to Langdale that's some mileage especially after a long drive. Looking forward to the next section to Keswick.❤
Well done Andy, enjoyed this, engaging monologue 👍
Cheers 👍
Great video Andy
Hopefully the ticks left you alone too enjoy your trip, looking forward to part two 🤙🤙🏔️🏕️
No ticks! 🙌 I don’t know how I got away with it! 🤷🏻♂️
@@BackpackingUK lucky bud , very lucky, must be that new backpack 🎒
Good first day, I didn't get to Langdale until day 2.. I cant believe you stopped in the Britannia and Then the wainwrights as well... cant wait for the other videos
I stayed at Braysbrown Farm for a few nights ten years or so ago. It was £6 a night then so a tenner today is not too bad at all I think.
Loos and showers cleaned twice a day, with a separate loo block for when they’re cleaning the other block. Hot showers all day and cold running water. What more does anyone need?
It’s a lovely stroll to the little shop with cafe upstairs if it’s still there for breakfast.
Edit: that was the place I discovered sheep don’t STFU all night 😂
Nice one, Andy. I have been checking out that route. My conclusion, so far, is that it might make most sense to just do the Conniston to Keswick sections. Looking forward to the next vids.
Coniston Water to Skiddaw House are the best parts if you don’t have time to do the whole route 👍
Great video, and amazing campsite, think I'll visit there myself soon. Also great little Harvey Superwalker you've got there, I actually prefer using paper maps over digital 👍
Great video, I can't wait to see what you say about the Langdale valley, stake pass, Langstrath valley section. I did that area a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it. If you get a chance stay at the Chapel House Farm campsite some time, it's about 5 minutes past the Langstrath inn.
Stake Pass and Langstrath feature heavily on my next video. Stunning!
Awesome video mate, cracking weather I'm doing this tomorrow can't wait ! Would love to see a review of the zen bivy with your big Agnes pad I have the same pad
All best pal
That bull sign has been there for years, but no-one has seen a bull in that field yet. Did the Way in early May going North to South, cracking walk.
Well that was a nice surprise! Just finished cutting the hedge and went to check out some YT vids in my comfy garden chair and up you popped with one of Englands great trail walks! Lovely film thanks, and look forward to next instalment 🤗
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic
Thanks! 🙏
Great trip Andy.
Thanks 👍
Nice upload Andy....... You're getting plenty of the UK's great trails in this year!
I always said I’d start vlogging them once I reached 20k subs, I’ve got plenty more planned over the next 2/3 years!
Great video , thank you plan on doing the walk beginning of October
Although the sun was lovely, it made it hard work. If you get a dry spell in October that would be perfect.
l
Great vid.
Looking at doing the Cumbria way end of July.. definitely won't be in 3 days though
3 days is a bit daft, 5 would be much better 👍
Quality mate 27 miles for your first day double drop that caffeine man 😂😂😂 just having a coffee whilst watching your video
Definitely need a pick-me-up the morning after a long hiking day! 😴 ☕️ 😳 😂
Very nice walk, so sort of the walking version of Hashing?
Including taxes and duties are unbeatable. James responded quickly.
Absolutely! As long as people don’t expect next-day Amazon-style delivery they’ll be very pleased 😃
Cracking distance with a late start and a healthy slug of pints
Fair play. I did it the other way round in 2.5 days. Totally spoiled the journey by going too fast😅
This was my first ever multi dayer and I loved it but I did South bound so I finished on the pretty sights rather then walking along the canals on the last day
Nice video. I’ve just kitted the entire family out with zenbivy lights. Absolutely amazing. They’ve just opened a UK website but no cheaper than US plus duties. Worth very penny. How heavy is your pack and tent? Cheers
I’ve always struggled sleeping g in mummy bags because I’m an active front sleeper. Quilts can be drafty. The Zenbivy system looks like it could be the one for me! Whole pack weight approx 10kg.
@@BackpackingUK thanks! Mega appreciated
Well Done Andy. I've the same Lanshan myself, if you touch the tent on the inside will water come through if its raining with it being a single skin tent?
No, the fly is the same as the double wall version, it just doesn’t have the same inner.
@@BackpackingUK cheers for the reply. God knows where i got that from but I’d convinced myself it would leak and being 6ft 2 was slightly worried.
👍👍👍
Looks like a wonderful trip. And yes you're right, Real Turmat is Norwegian
Do you find there is enough energy in the meals? I found that most are max 600 calories and with the amount of walking done goes no where near to replenishing your energy stocks
Totally agree, I usually try to get the big calorie bags!
Hi Andy where did you leave your car.
The Gill car park in Ulverston. You can get a 3 or 7 day pass. It’s paybyphone app 👍
Insects Andy not bugs, lets keep 'Americano' as far away as possible 😊.
Oof, I winced at that about the horseshoe route to "bag" a cluster of peaks. Not a fan of the practice. Quality over quantity every time, for me.
They aint cows !!!!!!
3 hours 9 1/2 miles, you motoring🫡
