I think it’s because people are on the fence where he sits.
He is emotionally Involved with this argument. It’s not “all” facts. Most of this is salt because he gave $10,000 for a $65 max game.
He’s salty that it didn’t become “his” dream. Just because it’s taking too long or he didn’t fit in with it.
But his argument as you said was quite balanced and well thought through. It’s made me think twice before investing any more money. A lot of people just enjoy the experience, because they have that feeling of optimism, that yes he games taking 10+ years... but the content is coming every 3 months. The servers are getting less buggy. The single player campaign is making progress. The scale is improving. Multiple crew applications are becoming more and more focused.
It’s just as everyone’s a little caught up in the excitement. CIS is trying to demolish the market, crush ED for scale and complexity, they’re trying to build a game worth $300m with too little staff, on too large a scale. The success relies on 1 thing. Lack of greed, if CIS stay true to he customer base. They’ll have future proof game like WoW, being the “Tesla” of the space game industry.
If they cut it short, Sure it’s going to crash and burn and piss 3 million people off and possibly ruin lives. But the potential for human decency is there.
Meanwhile the 2.3? Million customers are all strung up with the clear and blatantly risky dream of a augmented reality space game that they can play with friends. A lot of them growing up with star was, Star Trek, stargate, battlestar etc. And they want a piece of it. Because it’s the closest they’ll ever get to space.
So in conclusion, they probably disliked because it’s slightly bias.
Yes it’s risky. But if we’d never taken the risk of leaving the caves, we wouldn’t be the dominant species on the planet. And soon to be the solar system.
People are becoming blatant aware that they’re going to become the forgotten generation.
Too late to discover the world.
      To unlucky to discover mars.
Born to early to see commercial space flights.
They’re probably the “Lead me, follow me, or get put of my way” kind of person. And there’s nothing wrong with it.
There’s nothing wrong with this argument. Everyone’s different and has a different perspective.
I personally see star citizen as a risky, over complicated scam. There’s something fishy about the complexity, lack of optimisation. The deliberately handicapped economy with in game having a almost direct scale to minimum wage. $7.99 (10,000 credits) being expected to find 10,000,000 to buy an in game ship. Or the equivalent time to earn $7000. Absolutely ludicrous.
But at least it looks pretty whilst glitching through the floor, dying for no reason in a perpetual ground hog day that encourages drugs trafficking.

I believe it was John Carmack who once said it was better to focus on doing a few things well, than to try and do a lot of things poorly. Chris Roberts has great vision, but poor focus. He needs to hire a project manager with a reputation for banging skulls together and getting things done.

    • @Cramblit
      @Cramblit 5 лет назад +4

Disagree. Great things take great amount of time, also that saying is out of context. Chris Roberts is doing exactly what you're saying. He's focusing on small bits of the game and making it as good as can be before moving on. THat's why its taking so damn long to make. That of course will take time, but he's not trying to do mass amount of things. Baby steps, and doing it right on each step is the key.
You dont have to dumb down and make garbage games because that's what you're used too now.. Great games can be done. They just take a long time to do.

      so?
You say that like it's some ending logical point... would you mind making a point?
I'm going to assume you're trying to bash him for that specific statement, and saying he should of finished the game by now...
But you can't be that stupid... so I don't know what you're trying to say..
I'll humor the ridiculous idea that you seem to think a game should be finished in X amount of years, and X amount of money or "its bad" or "wrong" or some other ridiculous mindset.
My only question than to you is why?
Why can't they spend years making a good game? Who says a game has to be done and made in 4-5 years?
Perhaps you're just too used to getting shafted up the ass by the AAA devs who don't give a fuck, and forgot that games actually take a long time and is difficult to create if you aren't half assing it.
Take into account it took 2 years to create Star Wars Battlefront 2 and that was 99% copy pasted from Battlefront 1.
2 years to copy paste 95% of what they already made, and half ass the rest.
We're talking about an RP rich, fully immersive space game here. Something which has never been remotely done to this scale.. a vast majority of what they've had to do has never been done before. There isn't some template code they can copy paste, most of the technology 5-6 years ago was thought impossible, but here we are, pushing new boundaries in gaming BECAUSE of Star Citizens.
If you're saying "then they should be making the game if its going to take so long" like many cop outs try to argue when they lose the main argument, to that, I say fuck you as a gamer.
I don't want the "run of the mill" AAA garbage. They've been destroying gaming for the last 10 years at least releasing half baked, half assed sorry excuses for games and selling them at mint price.
Good on Star Citizens to finally break that mold, and be dedicated to making an excellent fully fledged game that pushes the boundaries of our technology and gaming. As a gamer, I welcome this whole heartedly.
Haters gonna hate, but the jokes on them.

I'm in a different boat. I pledged for a ship, about $80. I tried it on a free weekend and what the game had to offer justified what I spent for what I had access to and I felt it was reasonable. I didn't spend money on the premises of what it will be but what it was then/now. I still play it a lot and have made that money worth the time I've spent. Things that I like have changed / went away but that happens to every game and there was far more added than that I had to start with.
I fully support your idea though, nothing against not wanting early Alpha as there are tons of games that I wouldn't touch for that reason and would by after full release (assuming it's well done/complete).

I'm also a suscriber on concierge level and close to be Space Marshall. Being an old timer gamer I invested in Star Citizen because I knew Chris Roberts having played most of its past games starting with Wing Commander series, then Privateer, Starlancer and Freelancer finaly. Knowing how good his games were I decided to trust him to deliver Star Citizen being sure it will be a out of the ordinary game. This man has fire inside him because he is doing the dream of a lifetime. Failure is not an option as it will destroy his dream and his name. Contrary to some, I would have never invest that much if it wasn't for him at the head. Like many I have some periods of doubts sometrime especialy when I was seeing all that was add-up to the game. Even if the sum of everything, including the additions in the game, seem a real dream coming true, like we never saw before, I was a bit sad that all these were adding years of work to the project. Like FTR said we cannot talk much in the forum because we have to face all the Star Citizen fanatics that might interpret badly my saying.

So I feel I already got my money's worth. And it was fun, interesting enough, but after that it just wasn't worth it. And I'm following development, loaded the game to go to some planet and see what they've been working on and there's no gameplay there, just a pretty, but unfinished shell. Damn, I want my game. They imply. You infer.
But I appreciate that you correctly recognize that all of these transactions are sales. What drives me crazier is people who call the crowd funding an "investment." Investments confer a right to share in the equity. If all you get in exchange for your money is a digital or physical product, you're not an investor, you're a buyer. Just like when I give Burger King five bucks based on the expectation that they'll give me a hamburger and a soda five minutes later.
If Burger King doesn't give my my food years after I ordered it, that doesn't mean I invested in or donated to the company. It means the restaurant breached our contract.

I think the fanbase is just so stoked cause this is the game they have wanted for so many years. They tend to have blinders on and not hold the game accountable throwing absurd funding at this project. I think everyone here wants this game to succeed, but all things need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Here are the things Cloud Imperium has done right.
Object Container Streaming in 3.3 has allowed the game to run much better. Best performance to date.
Fidelity Fidelity Fidelity with the Fidelity Fidelity....The game looks gorgeous.
Ship modeling is the best in the industry Elite Dangerous comes close, but the ship detail is amazing and modeling is top notch.
Engine tools and clothing physics, not to mention technical achievements that have been built. Would not be surprised if Cloud Imperium packages up an in house Engine called the Cloud engine.
As close as it gets to transparent development. They have opened up a lot of their framework and inner workings to the public. Very rare and with this comes increased scrutiny and criticism.
Its an amazing technical demo, its not a game yet. (Consider this an Alpha that has bloated with the funding and the drooling fans want more to do)
    Things they have done wrong.
    Ship pricing
Bad communication (However the roadmap has been a considerable improvement.)
Mixed signals what the economy will or won't be.
Missions are far too low on pricing.
Persistence needs to start at some point for people to feel progression across versioning. 3.3 - 3.4 and so on keep the progression instead of overwriting it.
Missions are boring and need more depth.
Needs more mission givers stat. (This hasn't been made a priority) but we need higher risk - reward missions that pay out large sums.
Stop making promises you can't cash in on, be realistic and focus on core mechanics. Flight modeling, Performance, Animations, AI, Missions, and Tangible gameplay should be priority. Not more concept ships put all of your house on the core game first make it great then sell more ships.
Those are my two cents, I enjoy playing this game it has gotten better, but still a long road ahead.

On the mission pricing issue. They discussed it on the most recent calling all devs, essentially they know it’s a problem and need to do balancing, however, the prices are in for how the economy team thinks earning money will be like when the other professions are added in full. Also they mentioned that the system currently in the game (Stanton) is a higher security area so it’s combat missions will be a lot less lucrative compared to other systems.
Just something to keep in mind

Your list of things theyve done wrong is great, but its more of a list of things us, the backers, needs to use as fuel for the fire under their feet. I believe it will all and is all being worked on, considering it IS an alpha. Its hard to balance something that isnt even finished, right? Balancing for games comes after the game is effectively completed :P What we have now is a fantastic base for what the game will become. So rather than those being things theyve done wrong, its more of a list of things that will be coming in the future and of course, things that the backers should keep talking about... though, as I said, I believe all of those things are already on the list for CIG despite our cries.

I come online for about an hour every time there's an update to see if there's any fun to be found. 99% of the time, I'm left disappointed. That's how they get you though isn't it. By prioritizing ship sales over game mechanics and content, they leave you wondering around trying to find things to do, during which, your subconscious concludes that in order to fulfill the craving for 'fun', you must do the only thing that is 'logically' available for you to do....buy another ship....You then find yourself exploring the cold vast emptiness of the interior of your new ship, and for a while you are entertained. Then another update comes, and your new ship still isn't fixed, and there is still no 'fun' to be found, so you buy a new ship.....so on....so forth...it's the perfect scam. Like a drug. Give them enough to get hooked, then take it away, and leave them to crave, then give them some more 'new and improved' 'heroin'. I'll stick to Elite: Dangerous for now.. that game is my true EVE killer. Don't get me wrong, I FUCKING LOVE SC with a PASSION but!!! I need more bang for my buck and refuse to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for concept art. Especially after the ~$46mil that a SA company has just provided... Squadron 42 looks sweet and all but I'd rather have it spent on base game content than Commissioner Gordon, Agent Scully, Jedi Master Skywalker and Honorable Smuggler Davos. At this point it feels more like a techpiece than an actual game, but I'm optimistic and sincerely hope it is fleshed out to be the be-all and end-all of space sims.
EDIT: No, Chris Roberts and CIG would not walk away millionaires if they just decided "fuck it," they would be sued into the Stone Age (rightfully so I might add) by hundreds if not thousands of people wanting their money back because of unfulfilled promises to the backers.

In that sense I feel I have already got my moneys worth...HOWEVER I agree with the criticism that CR has made WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to many (often directly conflicting) promises too early to the detriment of the game.
At this point it is too easy for CIG white knights to defend any and all CIG decisions with some supporting citation years ago. I still get people telling me that it's ok if travel times are too long because each planet will have (not exaggerating this claim) "100's of hours of content", and how deep travel will be given how "EVERY NPC in the universe will be tracked with day and night cycles", despite being straight up told last conference that they will be effectively RNG.
These overestimation's of tech limitations often result in an expectation that ALL mechanics hold an equal amount of unrealistic depth with a complete lack of awareness that DEVELOPMENT COSTS MONEY WHICH IS FINITE. It's not just CR who is at fault (though it is inevitably his final call), the fans have a virtually unquenchable appetite for more "everything" down to a demand that every button on a ship be clickable supported by an animation.

How about being realistic. Loreville and ArcCorp for that matter will be a few zones within the city you will be able to visit, connected by tunnels/corridors and magic elevators (which CR said wouldn't be a thing, but they are...). Nothing more. The rest of it will be backdrop that you won't even be able to fly near. Which begs the question - what is the purpose of such large cities if you can only visit and explore so little of them? Make them smaller - less performance hit and it won't be so obvious that there is so little of them you can walk around.

I get that Wing Commander was remarkable, and I also get that most of his work beyond Wing Commander was decent as well, but something that isn't exclusive to this man yet should still be acknowledged as fact is that it wasn't Roberts' work wholesale that made those games work, it was the talent underneath those games that made them what they are in some aspects. Like how everybody gives Warren Specter credit for Deus Ex's narrative when such was more the work of one of the game's writers, Sheldon Pacotti.

It's built with the I-Novae Engine which has been in development since at least 2004 when it was originally called Infinity Engine. Unfortunately BioWare FINISHED a game engine also called Infinity Engine so since the they were the ones that crossed the finish line first they got the name.
Keep in mind that the I-Novae Engine has had very little funding compared to Star Citizen and yet it's coming out sooner. It was being made thanks to dedicated people and small donations many years before crowdfunding existed.
What was most of that time spent doing? Creating the physics and rendering system and resolving tech issues along the way. It's only been a few years where they started actually making something with the engine they created so ya it's a massive project. I look forward to it.

I don't want to sound like "that guy" but... You know what it looks like right now? Looks like as long as the game is in development and supported by a large "positive" fanbase, they are going to stall it. Feels like they are trying to press as much juice as possible for as long as possible. Makes me wonder if they are ever going to finish it. Probably once it will stop making enough cash, they are going to quickly put everything together. Then, you'll end up with a poorly optimized, barely functional product with barebone content. Just looking at the ships it's scary... They sure put a LOT of effort making all those 300$ + pledge ships... The way I see it. As long as they have people buying anything like drug addicts. They are living the dream. And the longer it lasts, the longer they won't have to worry about money. Selling their fans a dream to live one of their own.
I sure hope I am wrong and that it won't come to that. But, there's good reasons to be worried.

    • @brandnertim
      @brandnertim 5 лет назад +1

The nice thing about having that much money and having people drop buku money for pledge ships is that you can develop those extra things tangentially to the rest of the game. Just think about it purely from an office/business approach. You have the core of the developers that are building the game. If you've got tens of millions of dollars lying around do you really want to take them away from their work to build a ship for rich kids to pledge for? No, they opened up new offices, hired new developers to work solely on these new ships, and they can fund those developers with the money raised from those ships.
People love to criticize the ships and claim that's where all the development is going, but the evidence is the exact opposite. The ships are basically a different project being built by different people, so the rest of the game can continue being produced unimpeded. And the best part is, with how quickly they can produce a ship and the millions that they can raise by getting pledges for it, these secondary teams producing the ships are basically self-sufficient. They bring in just about as much money as they cost, which simply means that when the game does come out it will do so at the same time it normally would have, but more ships and other stuff than it otherwise would have.

    • @thermallance7947
      @thermallance7947 5 лет назад +2

@@brandnertim At that price I SURE HOPE they are self-sufficient. What I fear is it becoming way too much of a focus. You speak as if these ship cost "lot of money" to develop. In wich case I'd gladly point to DCS and the vast ammount of different planes for way less money. And quite more complex than what you can find in Star Citizen. And it is still very profitable.
Yes, those can be made "alongside" development. But, what happens when stuff that is made "alongside" becomes more profitable than the game itself? One would have a lot of reason to take his time in such a situation.
Given the mentioned example of DCS and the fact Elite Dangerous happened... It's kind of hilarious how long this development drags on. Over-Extended development time is usually not a good sign.
And about using that overstock of money to open new offices and hire tons of people. Just look how much that helped Starbreeze. Growing fast is NOT always good. Especially in the gaming business.

hmmm, but, should they "finish it" ? why finish something with so much potential to grow endlessly, why not keep growing it, isn't finishing something technically ending it ? I feel this game has the potential to become something very big, if not one of the biggest and well, trail and error goes hand in hand with creating anything, I have zero issues with how long it's taking, I've seen the progress they've made first hand and I've also seen their attempts to keep backers and buyers informed, I really have no problems at all, yeah, I may at times want more of something, but I'm more then happy to wait for what could be potentially the best space game sim known to man.

To FTR, as a current supporter of the game I would like to say that it is really unfortunate that people respond to your criticisms with personal attacks or threats of violence.
Unfortunately what you say is true, there are some people within the community who cannot accept anything resembling criticism, and take it on personally, and that's sad.
Unfortunately though, that does go both ways too, and if you look at almost any "pro Star Citizen" video on youtube you'll get more then your share of equally negative haters, many of whom go out of their way to troll comments, insult backers, and disrespect the community.
Once you take away the trolls that exist on both extremes, you have a community that's actually mostly made up of pretty reasonable people who are in it because they are passionate about the project and want to see it succeed, but at the same time are totally aware of the risks that it may all fall apart at any time.
For those who don't understand, my mentality around Star Citizen is that the vision CIG have for this game is so incredible and so much more ambitious then anything anybody else has every sought out to achieve, that's I am willing to throw some of my own money at this if that increases the chance of that one day becominga reality.
I am totally 100% aware that CIG could run out of funding tomorrow and the project could fail, and i could lose every cent I've invested. And im ok with that. Id rather make a contribution to help make this a reality rather then see it fail knowing i didn't try.
And if it fails im totally willing to walk away without that money.
The way i see it there area many people out there I every day life who take risks with their money, knowing full well they could lose it all. Investing In shares, starting a new business, investing in ideas, even as simple as throwing money into a poker machine.
There are people who have spent $1,000 on this game ovrr thr course of 5 or 6 years, and if you say that in public people will say you're crazy.
Yet if you tell somrbody you've thrown $1,000 down poker machines over the past 5 years many people won't bat an eyelid.
At the end of the day, i dont see anything wrong with SC backers putting money into the game as long as they understand the risks and are doing it despite that.
People like to sell this as a giamt con, but its not a con if you're putting money In while knowing full well the risks involved.

People, who buy ships buy those ships, because they want the ships.
But of course they can justify their spending a bit easier by "I am donating to make the dream come true.".
I put in $120. I started with $30 (for Aurora + both games).
I didn't upgrade to bigger ships, because I wanted to donate money. I upgraded, because I wanted a better ship with LTI.
$120 is more than I've ever spend on a game. But I don't feel regret.
I was following the development very closely in the beginning and was very active in the forums (few thousand posts).
However after a while I didn't want to waste my time with it anymore. There was NO communication of the devs with the community and NO reaction to constructive criticism or ideas in the forums.
There were regularly threads with complains/concerns, which had to become over 200 pages long, until this useless fat human-T-Rex Ben Lesnick wrote ONE non-answer into the forums.
This "community manager" was the biggest red flag for ME. A community manager, who had not even 400 posts at this time is ridiculous. I still don't know, what this guy did in all this time ... probably eating.
Anyways ... after getting out of the information spiral, I can watch and wait completely relaxed. If the project fails, that would be sad, but I am not emotionally invested anymore. If it can match at least some of my early expectations I will be happy.
Nowadays I only check the status once a year ... or when some bigger Star Citizen News appear on general Games Websites.
Just saw, that the 300i finally gets the rework, which was promised 2 years ago. So maybe Star Citizen should just be seen as an exercise in patience. :)

Marc Scott Zicree aka Mr. Sci Fi has a similar "business model" going with his Space Command series. The crowd funding impulse for both projects started in 2012. It makes you wonder if they shared ideas on how they could bilk hopeful science fiction fans and gamers by promising them what they want and never delivering or always asking for more.
It's been six years and neither of these projects are close to completion. Marc Zicree is a master at making promises and asking for money. He constantly touts quality of the Space Command series as a requirement for more kickstarters and more funding. Just call or e-mail him so he can send you the information to give him $7,500 a share for Space Command and you can share in his producer net profits whenever the show is sold.
Strangely enough the show has not sold despite two years of Mr. Zicree dropping every indication it is on the cusp of being picked up by a major distributor. Once that happens you cannot buy shares in the show anymore. Perfect sales model in creating an immediate need to invest in it with ultimately nothing to show for it.
There is the one hour pilot that's released. You watch it to realize the quality level is exactly the same as the fan produced Star Trek New Voyages (which Mr. Zicree loves to boast of his involvement writing one of the episodes). Star Trek New Voyages was produced without a crowd funding campaign by fans who simply loved Star Trek. They also managed to turn out the episode in less than six years.

And that whole "it's a sale but everything costs the same" thing is just patently absurd!

Star Citizen backer here. Just to clear up a few things.
    1. You can back the game, and get into it for $56, which is pretty standard for modern games. No further purchases needed.
    2. As funding has come in previously, the game and the scope has increased according to specific stretch goals.
    3. The "fanbase" is not cult like, not in my opinion at least. Money aside, what you get out of the game is up to you, it depends on the time you put into it. It is actually quite fun to play around with the Alpha, there isn't a whole lot to do, but you can still spend hours ingame if you want to.
    4. Chris Roberts gets paid a salary for his position as CEO, you know, like in any other business.
    5. Star Citizen is being made parallel with the game SQ42, which is a single player campaign set in the SC universe. The $200 million dollars crowdfunded for the game is actually being used to make both games.
    6. It is reasonable that this game would cost upwards of $150 million dollars to make, considering that they are developing a lot of technologies for it themselves, this requires game developers who, like in every other business, gets paid a salary.
Id like to point out the Failure to Report has been biased towards the game and the game development in the past. I doubt he actually spend tens of thousands of dollars on the game. Not only is that extremely difficult to do, you'd practically end up having bought almost 100 ships.
I'm not a fanboy, I just like the game for what it is, and not for what I think it's going to be. If the company developing it goes bust tomorrow, then so be it, I got my moneys worth from just playing around in the Alpha. From the looks of it they are going to be able to finish the game though. Don't know when, probably around the same tome as Half Life 3 comes out.
For anyone interested in maybe backing to game, I'd just like to offer a bit of sentiment. SC promises a lot, and maybe you find that intriguing, but remember, Chris Roberts isn't building your dream game, he is building his dream game. From what I've seen so far I'd like to be part of that dream, it looks very good from where I'm standing.
I don't know, there is a lot more I could say on the subject, but I'm not going to. I didn't watch the entire video, I have a pretty good idea about what it's going to say. Personally I think it's well worth backing the game, even if it is just in Alpha at the moment. Nothing like this has ever been done before, I can see why that would be scary to people like FTR, but that's no reason to rage against it.

But the red flags you illustrated that bring into question the integrity and honor of the companies/ employees/ communities involved is a huge barrier that makes me want to wait for it all to implode and some sensible company buy out and rehelm the project.

I don't think many people realize the amount of work it takes to build a new company from the ground up around a project in process and with a budget constantly in flux. CIG started as 13 people in a basement and practically no funding. Just an idea and the barest of showcase material to sell it. Over the last years it has grown to more than 500 people with a total budget of over 300 million. In this time CIG inevitably had to go through multiple internal restructures. Entire development departments had to be created, leadership personnel had to be determined. That process alone can take years. In addition a lot of early development time had to go into the constant creation of new marketing material and trailers to keep up and raise public interest. Without that they never would have achieved the current funding level. Now that they have grown into a proper company they actually got the manpower to begin development in earnest, which the recent step-up in patch frequency and scope shows. CIG also needed to create an entirely new game engine as nothing on the market would be able to do what they need it to do.
If you want to draw comparisons to other ambitious projects; Red Dead Redemption 2 took 7 years to develop but Rockstar was already an established company, had all of its 1000+ staff organized, many of which worked on the first title as well. They didn't need to familiarize themselves with as many new development tools, a lot of the game assets only had to be adapted and modernized instead of created new. The Euphoria game engine they used they didn't need to develop themselves as it was perfectly suited for their needs and even then RDR 2 with its close to 1 billion dollar budget is the most expensive game to this date, of which the largest part was spent on marketing. In light of that I don't think Star Citizen's budget is overblown or mismanaged.
Considering the facts I am deeply impressed by what Chris Roberts and CIG have achieved in so short a time. 10.000$ worth of backing doesn't entitle you to instant gratification. If you expected this game to follow the same development patterns as those of established AAA games then you simply failed to properly inform yourself.
There is a reason something of the scope of of Star Citizen has never been done before, even though some attempted it. CCP tried to implement traversable stations into EVE Online only to realize that they couldn't do it properly without massive budgetary commitment as every station and eventually every ship would need to offer something visually unique to avoid that sense of sterility and repetition that, among other things, caused X Rebirth to be so poorly received. It has to be done right or you might as well not do it at all. So far, from what little is there to see, CIG has done a stellar job but it is clear that it'll take many, many years yet before the game could be considered complete. At this point however, I have little doubt that it will eventually be completed. Development is too far along and only a major blunder could jeopardize it now.

I'm someone who backed the game directly after the kickstarter capaign. I pledged 280 $ with the last pledge (or purchase) being made in November 2013. I install the odd alpha-client every few months, and see how my GTX 970 handles it and then go back to Elite Dangerous or other games. The thing for me is that I only follow Star Citizen losely. I see what they are trying to do and everytime I read some list of features I think to myself: How on earth are they going to have all of this stuff in a single game?
But I'm mostly fine. Why? Because while I want to play Star Citizen someday, the game I'm really looking forward to is Squadron 42. I was an avid Wing Commander fan back in the day. I actually played the first game on my trusty old Amiga 500 (which was about 10 FPS or something) and only got my first PC, because I wanted to play WC2. So for me it's mainly about the single-player-campaign-experience and not so much about the open world. And for that I'm still kinda hopeful to get a finished product within the next one or two years. Mostly because they already did the motion capturing and voice recording, so the story is set and the engine can at least display some kind of game.
But other than that I'm still reserving my judgement on Star Citizen for time it releases or at least enters Beta. What I'm definitely not doing is giving them any more of money.

I must admit it seems utterly crazy to me too. It occurs to me that any scheme like this is almost certainly doomed to failure. They seem to constantly be getting, or rather inventing new ideas for streams of revenue rather than seriously working diligently on this project.
When someone is constantly getting funds, it is hardly surprising things change so often. They do not have the "incentive" to finish this thing. They have the incentive to constantly think of ways to accrue funds.
That is how this now looks.
However as the Don stated. It is supposedly a free world. He is at liberty to spend his funds just as he sees fit.
To me, this looks as if it has morphed from a rather grandiose, over stretched game concept, into a money making scam. It cynically looks to have exploited the ones most vulnerable, especially those who have already invested ridiculous; to me, sums of cash and far too many years waiting in vein for this. There is a constant stream of bullshit to keep those already invested investing even more to see thier dream come to fruition. I find it pretty disgusting at this point. Almost like a snake oil merchant or someone trying to sell a religious ideology.
I think there is little reason to imagine it will ever finish. If it does miraculously finish and launch. I have no doubt after the YEARS of massive overselling and hyperbole it will invariably be a disapointment.

The whole project sinks or swims with the inital release of Sq42. It's being put off because Chris Roberts is a perfectionist, and it needs to be perfect. Loyal backers will happily/grudgingly payroll it till then, hence the ability to keep delaying it. I think it will be good enough to be a huge hit, but it will depend on the marketing and ability to bring new players into the universe from other franchises SW/ST/WoW etc. If it's less than steller, then the parasitic gaming press will shit on it from a great height and morale, funding will be hard pressed. If Sq42 release is a success, then funding wont be a problem, and the SC universe will be rolled out and expanded on over the next 3-4 years, with the two sequel releases of Squadron over the same time period.
My concern for the game has always been player to system/server count. My solution, for the time being, would be multi region, multi realm (like WoW,) until time/tech advances and optimization of bandwith, next gen CPUs and GPUs facilitate being able to combine realms to host larger and larger populations.
Could the development have been smoother...sure, have mistakes been made, absolutely. To be fair though, it was a kick starter studio, with a moving goalpost budget, that has gone from 10 to nearly 500 employees. They've practically re-written an entire new game engine, which alone could account for a $200 milllion budget and 5 years for most established studios. Backer since way back here. I see many of your opinions and perspective are clearly correct. I thank you for making the video in this way. I and many of my fellow backers are having some of the same thoughts. The scope creep is for sure one of our major concerns. They never cut scope, always increase. We are seeing minuscule progress compared to the amount of people hired at the company. I do like the latest trend with the deadlines for releases and the road map. But it is not realistic to expect 100 star systems based on the content they have made so far. We do have some fun playing it now and there are some really great stuff in there that can create some 'wow' situations. But I can not see this ever getting finished if they do not start cutting on scope. But hey maybe we can get a couple of systems on a stable build with game play loops that actually make sense as a game, I will enjoy that. I am not getting my hopes up for the "full" game. Like Elite Dangerous was a "MMO" with max 32 people in your instance, this game will have similar limits and will end up as a multiplayer game at the most in my opinion. I was also witness to CR making a very public statement “The game is 100% funded”, which was about a year after he Kickstarter campaign ended. That’s 100% funded.....for the “new” concept of the game WITH the expanded content. Squadron 42 was promised to us, the date was missed, it was promised again, and the date was missed again, etc. Then CIG then started rolling out concept ship after concept ship and started rolling in the $$$$. Then CIG started rolling out the videos of potential gameplay, and then more advertising videos and more concept ships. This guy is SPOT ON!
I got a FULL refund about 2yrs ago and have been very, very happy with my decision. CIG is still doing the same thing to it’s backers and new fanboys have taken up the torch of defending the idea repeating the same rhetoric CIG has been selling them for years and years. This is NOT a game folks, it’s still a concept in development. It’s a game when it’s released, which will most likely never happen. Why? Because they are selling a dream and all the dreamers simply keep paying them. They will keep rolling in millions as long as the dreamers keep believing the dream

I'm on the fence on getting X4 after the last one they did. Is it as good as the earlier series?

One cult against another. Not surprising.

Last X game I played was #2 I think, and was immensely disappointed in it (both in story and in gameplay stability). I've heard the later X games are a lot better, but just haven't pulled the trigger on trying them yet.

The most I'll spend to support this game is 100ish dollars if at most. I can't imagine spending that much.

I started backing it in 2016, I have hope for Star Citizen but I'm also realistic and cautious because of the situation. I'd advise people taking the wait and see approach though.
