Does anyone think there are gains to be made by a custom box over the fairly predominant opinion that Skar prefabs leave dbs on the table.

    • @packoswuids9000
      @packoswuids9000 2 года назад +3

@@jeffrobinson4841 skar prefabs really aren't that great in my experience
I've tried 4 different boxes on my vxf 12's D4
2skar prefabs. A qbomb box then just a regular sub box.. The armor series and then the regular box from skar which were 3.8CF
and it got so quiet spl hit the FLOOR
The original box I got that was made out of 3/8 MDF were better than the scar prefab boxes I got
I've disliked them both on SPL standards though I will say they sound great SQ wise
I'm currently housing a QBOMB XL series box
4.25 Cf and it's insanely loud
Just my 2 vxfs on a 3k put enough air pressure in the cabin to float a bag in the window. And that's firing into the trunk as well

They look really good and you can even use them in the house if you want to. I can't find any fault in any of the SKAR products. I really want that SKAR 18 and box for my home theater also.

Based on several of your tests (amps and subs) I went ahead and picked up a Rockville DB11 + 10" sub/enclosure kit a couple weeks ago. Really really good price (under $200 for entire kit shipped), and it's perfect for my Jeep. Doesn't overpower my speakers, but gets plenty loud with no distortion, and adds great low-end. I can still hear it at 70mph with no top and doors. Thanks for testing all the stuff you do, and for being honest about it. You're like Project Farm for car audio.

Id like to see music runs at or around its rms to see if it holds true to its power in the long run. I think like amp dynos that could give people a good idea of what they get for their cash. Great vid man definitely look forward to more. I wish i had a setup to do sruff like this!

Sometime in the late 90s, the only competition I ever did was in a 94 Sundance. I ran two MTX Road Thunder Pro 12" subs in a custom built (by me) box, and a Thunder 2300 amp. Measured at the windshield with doors closed, windows up, I did 143.4dB at 35Hz on a 30 second burp. To this day, I still use those subs (now one sub per enclosure) in my home theater being driven by a Crown DC-300A Series 2.

Shit kills me when someone is telling there shit and someone always has to come and out do you times 10. And if you really do have all that in a Corolla. That's dumb. 1 of will have more output then ur 2. AMD do you have dual 300 amp alts with at least 2 XS batteries. . Why have 2 competition subs if u not competing. You dont have the room or box or electrical to get 100,% out of ur setup.. take. .1 seal off that hole from the other sub. Or build new box for 4.3 cubic foot box. After bracing and sub. It be 3.5 put it on 3I clean signal. No tramps... skars SvK brand amp or sundown salt. Something efficient.. I'm promising u it will be way louder

I'm talking comes from manufacturer sub an box in that brands sub an box ordered and shipped by manufacturer.. for a single sub under 200 bucks. Or double that price range and it still is not possible. I firmly believe in building your system by getting the most out of the application. Not buying tmac sub with the biggest magnet or fattest surround but choosing a sub is 4th most important part not 1st. I had an SDR12 in a Skar single sub enclosure but wound up replacing it with an SVR12 within a couple of months. I caught it on sale and got it for just $25 more than the SDR and was a lot happier with it. A bit smoother and hit lower. I have no experience at all with a Skar 15 or 18 so can't say the same holds true in those models. The SDR was good but if you have the cash it might be worth moving up a tier or two.
Then again, you're always going to want to upgrade no matter what you're running.

@@getit7107 I'm more of a veteran of bass. These days, for me it wasn't about cracking pavement, it was about replacing the horrible factory "sub" in my Lexus ES with something that had enough power to round out the bottom end of the soundstage, provide some depth and punch, but not be overbearing. That 350W RMS/700 peak 8" sub in the ported box is more than enough to do that.
When I was younger, at one time I had an 18" JL Audio 18W6 and five 10W3's in a Ford Ranger in custom enclosures, all powered by first-gen JL class-D amps. In retrospect, that was insane. Being older now, I wanted something more mature in my Lexus that I could hear/feel that also didn't eat up much trunk space and wouldn't piss off the neighbors or draw too much attention when stopped at red lights.
It's basically the factory sub output connector fed to a Metra harness, leading to a NVX active LOC with the smart on/off input sensing, feeding the main output into a Skar monoblock, pushing to the Skar 8" sub. For electrical I went overkill and did a 900 CCA AGM conversion for the starter battery, 4 AWG and a 95 amp fuse fed to the trunk to a distribution block, then a small 400 CCA AGM with an 80 amp fuse in the trunk backed into the same distribution block, then block-to-amp I fused with a 35 amp AGC. The Skar manual says 30 amps, but doing the math I knew that 30 was on the conservative side, 35 matches up closer to the real consumption at max output. I don't have to worry about flickering lights, Plus if I ever want to add a second 350W amp or power additional shit, I don't have to go back and re-do anything to what I already did.

Using my oscope to set gain at 36hz 4k watts. Never clipped them. He ran them for over a year before I built my custom built 15 using lob and others to complete it. Which we put the same amps on for testing. Skar products when setup properly can take real rms ratings easily. I put 3 evl 15d2 and 8 vvx8d2 in my tundra with 3 sets of skar tx65 and 1 tx525 for mids and highs. Setup on 14.8k rms using taramps amps and a old Rockford I had on the shelf. Everyone who heard either vehicle could not believe what or how they sounded. For any budget basshead it's hard to beat skar. Anyone who wants to see old blue with the subs I mentioned can go to Tuscan alternator reviews and check out the pic. Ol blue is being torn down for rebuild right now. Just not loud enough for me. Going with all skar zvx next with around 45k rms. Taramps amps still. It took me a year to custom build the brackets to add 2 more alternators. So I have to say thanks to big d. Honest reviews. No bs. To anyone looking to add bass to any vehicle all I can say is buy what you can and play around. I've built so many different systems for friends using so many cheap brands. More than doubled input power with an increase of only 1dB SPL means you are well beyond linear operation, with a fully saturated voice coil and/or Xmax limiting. It would be much more relevant to find out at what input power it becomes non-linear. The THD in these ‘thrill’ tests is almost certainly near 100%, with grotesque levels of IM added to that. I had three in my Altima 6th order b pillar wall, on a banda 7k and blew them almost immediately but reconed them with better high temp coils and was in the 150s on music , they were awesome

Skar for the win!! Skar is bad ass...there amps are top notch and tons of raw power and clean base

In my opinion 18" subs are by far the most musical option. If you're going for sq there's no replacement.

That 18” skar seems like an excellent buy. Especially since the enclosure is built to spec and tuned to 29hz. I’m considering purchasing one for my Yukon and replacing the 12” Fosgate T0 I had in there.

I bought a pair of shallow ILX 10s years ago on SMDs Christmas sale, for $35 each. Used one in a sealed wedge as my center woofer on my home stereo. The other I built a 1.25 cf ported box and used it in my f150. Beat the crap out of it. Still have them 6 years later. People need to appreciate stuff for what it is. Of course it isn't as nice as a JL 18. Its also 1/15th of the cost.

Cool, but honestly I expected higher numbers. The Kicker Quad did 150+ in that same vehicle. Four 12s versus this 18. While the 12s do have about 1.6X the cone area, they were 6+db louder, which is equivalent to about 4X the cone area. Power level close to the same too.

I have two of those twelves on the ignite amp you did a while back. Put one ten on a power acoustic 2500 at 1ohm in a expedition. At less than $200 bang for buck is an understatement.

Back in 1995 I was a junior in high school I bought a 93 S10 short bed regular cab so I didn't have much room. My grandpa had a wood working shop and I built several wedge boxes, tried several subs. Trying to get to where the bench seat would go all the way back to have plenty leg room. The round Kicker Solo Barics hadn't been out long. But as you know cubic foot needs to be close to the numbers. Had 12s and 10s different brands but tried 10" solos. With a correct size box and leg room and for the size and space was crazy! Clean and hard hitting but would drop way low for back then. Had a old school Auto Tek amp that was pretty good size and plenty of power. I can't remember the model but was badass back then! Car audio back then was way more expensive than now.

@@wal thanks for replying back! That skar 18" for that price is a steal! And while nothing is a giant magnet and not huge watt rated still nice. I'm curious to know about the skar amp you used? Like average price and what model it is? If you don't mind!

For people who can build their own box, care about sound quality AND the SPL, I recommend looking into the Dayton Audio UM18-22. It's objectively a better driver and possibly more efficient as well... a customer's car did 145+dB on music with a single UM18-22 in a custom box I built him (around 4.5cu.ft net tuned to 26-27Hz) and a 1500W DD Audio amp. Of course the Skar could've scored higher in a custom box, but it doesn't make a better driver. I'm in Norway, but I'm sure Parts Express will help you out with an Ultimax for testing, Derek 😁

When u get a second one of these face them opposite of each other and have the cones facing each other wire one 180 out of phase and have the ports firing beside each of the boxes see if u can gain anything from almost trying to isobaric load it, I think it would be interesting to see what it does
