Well that's what happens to any sub if you far exceed the power rating. Kickers make one of the most durable, affordable subs on the market by far. Over power any speaker and you are going to blow the voice coil, new or not has nothing to do with it. It's just simple math.

As we later found out, they survived the heat soaking! He gave long breaks between each test and it was the suspension mount that ripped. Thats an awesome sub. 👍

Also, I've told Derek many times about my old four Kicker Solobaric 10s (the round ones with the Stillwater Designs logos on the motor) on a Soundstream Reference 1000x4 amp in a full custom encolsure that I had in my 1992 Integra back when I was 19 years old. I ran it on a Sony Xplod 50x4 tape deck with a Sony 10-disc CD changer and it was one of my favorite sound systems I've ever had. I have no experience with the square Kickers as I've never owned one, but I'd really like to own a couple of these some day. I am 40 years old with two teenage sons these days, but I don't think I'll ever grow out of being a basshead.
Tell me about it. I have all my old, original, Soundstream amps. When I was 19, I had 2 Soundstream Spl170's in a Grand Cherokee (I actually had the Soundstream application engineer help me design the ported enclosure). Each was powered by a Soundstream Reference 1000S. Thing was disgusting. I had to bolt the rear hatch closed as the bass kept breaking the factory lock mechanism. I'm also in my 40's and now have a single Kicker Comp 10, in a ported enclosure, in the back of my Golf. I was going to throw one of the 1000S at it, but decided to go with the Reference 300. Only thing I do different now is use foam plugs when I want to go above reasonable. I make the kids wear them too, as they love the Bass Mechanic CD's. I'm sure mom wouldn't approve us listening to 2LiveCrew just yet ;)

I've wanted this video ever since I've seen that Gately box. I also have been waiting on the Sequoia paint job video since you posted on the First Gen Sequoia page
I caught that too. It does not look like the coil was blown. I think over-excursion might have killed it, and the former being bent (hence the rubbing)
146 from a single 12 is awsome and the amount of power wow. This was a kool video showing just how strong this combo is. Well done. Sad to see it blow but now you can do a video on the drop and go replacement cone. I want two solo x 15s in a custom gately enclosure. Hey brother… thanks as usual. Please video your tear down and re-cone of the woofer. I know I’m not the only one curious to see the damage report . Cheers
Its pretty clear in the video that he did not cool the voice coil between burps. He let it heat soak and the epoxy burned up causing the coil windings to came apart. Great video as always. I like your suggestion about adding the threaded inserts. I'd like to see this awesome sub with some Rockford fosgate power. 1 or 2 T2500BDCP. I'm guessing less would be more in that situation. I recently put up A T1500 BD against A JP23 and the Rockford fosgate out performed it all day long even though it has 800 less watts. The Rockford amp just sounded better and the bass was deeper
Yup I’ve had a t10001 for years Bought the skar audio rp2000 Even though it had more power The t10001 sounded way better And had that deep rumble RF for the win!!
I used a couple old boxes 2x15, from a 80s Nugent tour, put in 2 new 15 inch drivers and installed a 1000 watt plate amps from Lase and our band had 118 decibels at 50 ft in a local bar.
Big D is trying to catch up to you! Lol He still needs to learn how to cool the coil after a burp. I think it would've survived just fine if he didn't let them heat soak.
Next time you have to drill something out like that try this. Drill one out and put the insert in then screw it down, then drill one on the other side if the speaker put the insert in, then bolt it down with two screws. Now the speaker can't move so you cab drill out the rest of the holes.
@@wal just binge watched way too many threaded insert videos and learned a couple things. 1) I need to get a center punch set to be more accurate in setting up the hole locations. 2) I’m probably not drilling the holes perpendicular enough and either need to get a cheap hand drill press/stand or make a jig. 3) like with drilling the holes I need a way to put the inserts in straighter (RUclips search “threaded insert jig”) Hope this helps someone.
Nice box but for the price I would expect the well nuts to be preinstalled from the underside for clamping force when the screws are installed… fantastic box nonetheless.
I had a L7 15" when they first came out, I think '03 or '04 and had it in a 1.75 cu. sealed box. I believe it had a 1500 rms rating and had either a 600 or 800 watt Kicker single channel amp. It probably took 2-3 weeks before i got it somewhat broke in, I absolutely loved that set-up which i had it in a '97 Honda Civic hatchback. I couldn't turn up the volume past halfway when driving because it was tough seeing other cars as well as the lines on the road from jumping around when the bass hit. The only problem was the speaker leads broke from what i feel was inferior or too small wire leads. Matter fact it was about 8-10 months when they broke which seems odd because I've never had that to happen, even on 4-5 year old subs. I always wanted that 18" Solo X but back then it was harder to find or afford a amp that would even come close to the power rating, also the box had to be BEEFED up a lot to accommodate the massive weight.
Back then car audio companies were trying to make sub boxes as small as possible. Nowdays you can only fit one subwoofer in your car because the boxes are so big and you need a 10,000 watt amp to get the sub to do anything.
@@martinmi5 A bigger box is usually more efficient so you can use less power. But if you use a high powered sub that needs a lot of power to really move, look out! You will be way louder.
I know this is a bit late but with any speaker or subwoofer that has been pushed to the point you can start to smell the coils, never shut the speaker or sub off. Back it off and play the speaker at a lower volume so the voice coil can cool properly. You can save your coils this way.
What's up Big d they also got to take in consideration the subs not even broke in. I'm a die-hard kicker fan 16 kicker Comp r 10s in my Durango. I'm officially down four subs now😢 I'm running cxa 18 and 4 360x4. Loving it.
I would be shocked if it does any better numbers in a different box ....Bobby's stuff are probably the pinnacle when it comes to prefab ....and that's not a good word because let's just put it out there it may be prefab but it's as custom as anything you will build or have built and I highly doubt any better numbers will be seen no matter the box ....he is a evil genius when it comes to box fab ...and car audio in general ....I run one 12 in a extended cab s10 with a jp23 v1.5 and it gets down sure I am not doing those kind of numbers that being said I am sure that set up was loud and low ....big thumbs up !!! Never been big fan of the square subs but kicker doesn't make bad products so I am sure anyone who purchases this sub would be very pleased .....
Seeing as you were getting 140.56 with 1627 watts it seemed like it was power compressing a lot, considering the linear expectation is just over 143 with 3000 watts. Probably running out of cone excursion or maybe the port air was just moving too fast!
I've never been a fan of Kicker. But I love these videos. The new L7 is a nice sub tho. Good thing you got a recone kit lol. Wanna try an Audiopipe BDC4 next?
Kickers (Stillwater designs) are great subwoofers. I think a lot of people believe they are not ever since they started seeing them at Wal Mart, but it's not true. They are great, durable subs that pound as good as any. They created the game.

Used to have the very first 12 round solobarics, and those things were a beast once you did a breakin period, never had a blown woofer. Great video but in my opinion, use it for some time untill the rubber surround is soft , then crank it up.
Very helpful! Can you explain the following? (1) why you didn't connect RCAs but instead spliced to rear speakers, (2) why you fuse-tapped to the particular 7.5A fuse instead of connecting to the spare 30A fuse.
Que up the Evil Baby Laugh Gif at 5:35 when you said you wired the D4S into the dirt......lmfao😂 RIP L7X! You had to wire to .5 ohm? This maybe the first time I've heard you say something I disagree with... could have wired up rather than down lol, but to really torture test it needed .5 ohm. Not mad at you, glad someone did this. Good to know limits👍
@@tv_you-_-tube_tv As a box builder I'm aware of impedance rise, that amp wired to 2 ohms rather than .5 would still produce well over the 2000 rms recommended power, .5 ohms was not a requirement lol. He knew the risks involved but was told to do it by kicker. I don't blame him 🤣
Nice that they engraved "Kicker" on the top of the box in huge letters... That way the guys who smash your windows out know exactly what they're getting. And trust me, if you roll around town bumping every day eventually that system will get ripped out of your car. Guaranteed
I had one of there boxes best box ive ever had by a long shot ...long story short when my car got jacked and totalled i couldn't get the box out the trunk which sucked
Any chance you can play around with the new Fi subs? Preferably the Alpha or X series? Those are their more budget options rated at only 1000 rms and 1500 rms but something tells they can put out more than that.
I’ve just found a new love for kickers now they have the solo X BUT I wanna know will they work great in the kicker quad box sounds expensive but I wanna get the best kicker set up
I bought one and the feedback I'm getting from people in town is pretty funny and I only have it under powered on a lonely memphis 1100D and 4gauge from the stock alt and Cat. battery. It does well on decaf but not on anything else. I need to save up for proper power. It is pretty incredible what it does in this under powered configuration though. I can't wait until I get some new alt. and lithium batteries and new amp.
I fried a skar 12" sub other day......on the amp that came with the combo.... amp ,sub, box, amp package. No warning, no signs, no noises, no smell.....bumpin then smoking show!
That is a beautiful box but a bit of an oversight to forego putting the threaded inserts in when it was built. Granted it's hidden, so it's not a big deal, but it kinda sucks to have to drill into it and mess up the finish.
A lot of us have been there. getting excited and going too hard. Interesting to see that the cone appears to be damaged too on the bottom right corner (no shocker at a handful time rms power)
Know ive been asking for long time, but would live to see some more newer amp demos.and please that arc audio dyno?know a bunch of us would love to see it.thanks D!
My comment on the initial post about this sub made it seem like I was putting down the sub. That wasn't my intent, I'm just used to seeing more power. However, I am impressed that this X did what it did. Props to Kicker.
146db IS NOT A MICKEY MOUSE PROGRAM! That’s loud as hell on the windshield. I can’t wait to see what it can do on music. Maybe run the woofer at 2 ohms. The JP83 is still gonna put out over double the rated power.
For all the haters that think Gately is scamming people you are sadly mistaken. Gately doesn't make "generic" boxes, each of his boxes are designed for a specific sub and that's why they sound so good. The look of the box is just an added benefit. Show me another so called generic box that can take 12k watts and not fall apart! When you buy a Gately Audio box you are paying for the time it took him to perfect the specs of the box to maximize the output and performance of your specific sub and yes you pay a little more for the looks as well. If you think you can make a box that performs as good and looks as good then go for it....buy your own cnc machine and then tell us how much you can charge!
Any speaker can be used in any enclosure. It's just sometimes they are optimized to perform better in one type over another. This sub has a QTS of about 0.49 so it would probably be fine in a sealed box. I don't know if it makes sense to do that, though. This driver is designed to sacrifice some of its musicality in order to get high spl. So it's not really a SQ oriented driver. If you place sound quality so high as to run a sealed box I would look at a sub known for it's SQ and optimized for a small sealed box.
YANNNOOOOOO…… I was wondering how long it was gonna take to see a video of one being blown… buuuuuuuuuut holy cow 11k watts🤣😂😅😂🤣🥹 I love to see it! Im so glad I made the purchase on my L7X so worth the wait!
The correct answer is series voice coils to the amp. Excessive current is what smokes transistors. Current at minimum impedance will be a percentage of the current rating. When you cut the load impedance to half of rated min, you nearly double the current through those components. So if it was designed to be 80% of max current at 1Ω, it’s probably over the rating by 40-60% at .5Ω. It doesn’t do great things for the voice coils running twice the current they need for similar power levels. It’s better to keep coils in series and size amplifier power at that impedance. The output voltage should be across the speaker at high output levels with as low of a voltage drop across the output transistors. At very low impedances, the opposite happens. The load is high current with a low voltage on the speaker. That means the high current is passed through the output and dropping the remaining voltage across the transistors. That’s why amps get crazy hot at low impedance. Because it’s the worst way to operate them. Before anyone chimes in with impedance rise, that doesn’t make much difference against what I said. It’s still increases the load current beyond design.
I had, well still have but not hooked up to my current car 2 12" kicker comp m subs, nothing compared to this lol but they were great! Worked with everything from punk rock to hardstyle. Very punchy.
passenger window down and meter in the kick would have hit 150 most likely. Agree with you though. 146 sealed on the window is pretty damn good. You're also SPL testing with a 31hz tune. That's pretty sub optimal. Amazing for music though!
So around 2-3k rms, how long would it last on music. SPL burp is cool but it took only seconds to blow the sub at near 10k. Can it go an hour straight on 2-3k rms?
Yes, the 2k rating is very conservative considering how it was tested at Kicker. I think it would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
@@twentyonehertz What I mean by heat soaking is run 12k watts for 4 seconds and then turn off the sub. No air movement. Then do it again and again. That is not the correct way to burp a sub. Big D is still learning these things. When kicker tested the sub they use pink noise from 20hz to 80hz (if i remember correctly) and played it 100 hours straight at 2,000 watts. It survived. So the 2,000 watt rating is very conservative. On music, 2-3k all day should be no problem.
i love solobarics i have the 2nd gen ones 12" and had 10" till it got stolen. love these subs but down lo leaves some on the plate due to sealed box and size ( i think)

And I'm not hating on Gately or anyone else. ***I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN THINK ABOUT ORDERING MY FIRST GATELY ENCLOSURE, IT WILL EITHER BE FOR A SINGLE 18 SUB, OR MY TWO 15" SUBS!
Be nice if they just gave a shit really
Well they bet for that price. doesn’t cost that much for a little extra wrapping a few of those cardboard corners.
I love the little clips you involve into your videos they bring extra life into them. Love your work big D
Truely one of the reasons why I love the big dummy. He's putting some heart and soul into the videos
Geeze I shed a few tears on this one. So young and it went out like this.
Lmao 😂
Well that's what happens to any sub if you far exceed the power rating. Kickers make one of the most durable, affordable subs on the market by far. Over power any speaker and you are going to blow the voice coil, new or not has nothing to do with it. It's just simple math.
@@drewjohnson4794 You missed my point.
Considering BIG D went into this knowing he had too much power for the job.
@@drewjohnson4794 I think it would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
Its a testament to the quality of the sub that it lasted as long as it did with multiples of its power rating running through it. Great video.
I think it would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
As we later found out, they survived the heat soaking! He gave long breaks between each test and it was the suspension mount that ripped. Thats an awesome sub. 👍
That is insane
impressed with the 146. I also love that it can be reconed so easy. im sold. this will be my next woofer
5:07 All things people need to remember. Box is tuned low for music, not SPL. Tune the box at ~45Hz and it's be an easy 150db..... from one 12. 🙂
Thats first thing i notice peeking at 31hz. Put that bad boy in like what you said at runed 45hz and see what it dose at that power. Single 12 at that.
Exactly 140+ on 1500w at tuning thats the main thing to get from video box and speaker is amazing!
These subs are unreal and the box is beautiful! Good thing for the re-cone though! Always love your testing vids!
Let's be honest the Solo X is for people who want extreme daily drivers... not really SPL builds.. you totally can use them in SPL builds if you use multiple Solo X.. but Kicker needs to make sure every day people like their products listening to music... so its not a Sundown Nightshade... I personally dont care about the db level.. i just want a sub that sounds good while shaking the shit out of my ride.. so thats pretty much what this thing does..
Do you remember the kicker XPL line in the 90s? Your comment immediately reminded me of that garbage line. Just useless musicly.
@@briank.2650 LOL i dont remember that one... my first kicker was one of those crappy little black/yellow comps in a box tuned to like 45hz... insane.. it actually sounded pretty good funny enough..
I guess its true that its always about compromise. You can sacrifice musicality for spl or vice versa. You need to find the best compromise for you. 👍
That's why I got a dc audio XL and love it very musical while breaking shit
Y'all must be poor
I still have my 2002 kicker 10in Solo-Baric comp and they're still awesome running on my 500w JL audio amplifier
Man, I'd been waiting on this video!!! Thanks Big D!!!
Luckily, it can be reconed! 👍🏻😁
Bobby makes the most beautiful Plexiglass enclosures on the planet!
Two blown solo X’s in the same week
Coil is in the air 😆🥲
Thats why kickers suck. Theyre KNOWN TO BLOWN
Yea 😅😅. And only 12k of power. Should have blown at 60k right 😂
I think Big D's would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
I've wanted this video ever since I've seen that Gately box. I also have been waiting on the Sequoia paint job video since you posted on the First Gen Sequoia page
That Gately box is amazing
It also looks like the subwoofer cone buckled if you look at 11:28 in the bottom right corner.
He and his team are definitely a beast when it comes to enclosures.
Damn that’s gonna be a loud setup! lol I just have an 12in kicker square Q series and I’m wondering if an 12inch solo X would be a good upgrade.
Especially 146 from a 12 that's made more for sound quality than anything! They sound incredible while being that loud
go with the old x18 instatt. 2 x18s with 2 zx2500.1 amps ,arrounf 6-7k rms q 1 ohme get´s you solid 158-160db!! now you can get a x18 for 300-400 dollas thats 800 for 2 plus a hd8000 or 10 k! cheapes setup for rolling 150-153+ all day with musik. and for some db drag go with the lowes 28-35hz! port fs 28-35hz with 12cu feet. thats the 159-160 db for cheap!
Could go DC audio lv 5 or 6 instead they can easily handle 3500 to 6k rms all day
Hey brother… thanks as usual. Please video your tear down and re-cone of the woofer. I know I’m not the only one curious to see the damage report . Cheers
I second this request Big D. I am really curious to see what actually failed in the woofer's voice coil! Thanks a lot in advance Big D.
Its pretty clear in the video that he did not cool the voice coil between burps. He let it heat soak and the epoxy burned up causing the coil windings to came apart. Thats why you hear the wire scratching as he pushes the cone in.
I think it would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
Bobby G makes some of the best sub boxes in the game, his quality and attention to detail is worth every penny!
Just curious why you didn't go series at 2 ohms jp83 still has plenty at 2ohm. Sorry if I'm nitpicking. 😂

Wow, that is an absolute gnarly box and woofer.
Yup
I’ve had a t10001 for years
Bought the skar audio rp2000
Even though it had more power
The t10001 sounded way better
And had that deep rumble
RF for the win!!
i have a bdcp t1000 its a beast ! i would take it over any other 1000-2k amp hands down.

Gately is the best in the business. I’ll have one of his enclosures one day. The amp is gettin with it as well. The sub… R.I.P (until reincarnation) 😂
I used a couple old boxes 2x15, from a 80s Nugent tour, put in 2 new 15 inch drivers and installed a 1000 watt plate amps from Lase and our band had 118 decibels at 50 ft in a local bar.

You next
Big D is trying to catch up to you! Lol
He still needs to learn how to cool the coil after a burp. I think it would've survived just fine if he didn't let them heat soak.
He did it on purpose just to recover it
Next time you have to drill something out like that try this. Drill one out and put the insert in then screw it down, then drill one on the other side if the speaker put the insert in, then bolt it down with two screws. Now the speaker can't move so you cab drill out the rest of the holes.
Thanks for the tip, used inserts on the last box I made. Dispite best efforts ended up with disappointing results.
I did just this on each of the 4 corners and still got off on a couple of the remainder holes 🤦♂️
3) like with drilling the holes I need a way to put the inserts in straighter (RUclips search “threaded insert jig”)
Hope this helps someone.
Nice box but for the price I would expect the well nuts to be preinstalled from the underside for clamping force when the screws are installed… fantastic box nonetheless.
Gately cringed when he used those well nuts
Them subs are the bomb!! Field repairable cant go wrong..its not the end of this sub for sure 👍👍
Is the 1.3ohm at the 8:12mark of the video due to ohm rise?
Since it’s wired at 0.5 at the subs??
Great video!!
Cant wait to see you recone it...
Glueing in a recone got old!!!
I did a 145.5 on 1k watts. With 2 kicker L5s in a kicker prefab.
No doubt the box is beautiful man and i really dig the ports also
Kicker sent the woofer with the re-cone because they knew you were going to blow it up🔊
I had a L7 15" when they first came out, I think '03 or '04 and had it in a 1.75 cu.
I'm sure an spl specific box would have larger ports. He may have seen less compression at a higher frequency, like 45Hz, where his vehicle peaks at.
Should have wired it at 2 Ohms. It still would have put out over 3 times Kicker's rated power. 🤯
But subs don't put out. Power bro
@Damon Rowan ,Kinda what I was wondering, didn’t understand the “this sub had to be wired at 1/2 ohm” statement

Kickers (Stillwater designs) are great subwoofers. I think a lot of people believe they are not ever since they started seeing them at Wal Mart, but it's not true. They are great, durable subs that pound as good as any. They created the game.
You’re a fan of Audiopipe but not a fan of Kicker? How does that work?

You had to wire to .5 ohm? This maybe the first time I've heard you say something I disagree with... could have wired up rather than down lol, but to really torture test it needed .5 ohm. Not mad at you, glad someone did this. Good to know limits👍
I caught that too.
Yeah it didn’t quite go as planned but I have a lot more content on this coming

@@tv_you-_-tube_tv As a box builder I'm aware of impedance rise, that amp wired to 2 ohms rather than .5 would still produce well over the 2000 rms recommended power, .5 ohms was not a requirement lol. He knew the risks involved but was told to do it by kicker. I don't blame him 🤣
I've run 12k on 2 zvx-15's in a daily driver for about 2 years now with no issues.

That Kicker Was Pounding Pretty Hard, Great Numbers For One Sub! Gately Boxes Rule!
From what I’m seeing 7,500 rms for daily use and 10,000 for SPL system plus i seen this sub do a 150 at 30hzs 🎊 🎉😅
Nice video what’s the most power you would send to a pair for a daily vehicle obviously we see there are underrated
I can't wait until I get some new alt. and lithium batteries and new amp.

my first real subs were SSA icon 15s. i had the 12" zcons after that. SSA is a awesome brand ive been looking at getting a meter.
That is a beautiful box but a bit of an oversight to forego putting the threaded inserts in when it was built. Granted it's hidden, so it's not a big deal, but it kinda sucks to have to drill into it and mess up the finish.
bruh u be pushin them to damn hard!
That box is sick and amazing 😊
A lot of us have been there. getting excited and going too hard. Interesting to see that the cone appears to be damaged too on the bottom right corner (no shocker at a handful time rms power)

My comment on the initial post about this sub made it seem like I was putting down the sub. That wasn't my intent, I'm just used to seeing more power.
However, I am impressed that this X did what it did. Props to Kicker.
What do you mean you're used to seeing more power? Are you referring to the power ratings?

That’s loud as hell on the windshield. I can’t wait to see what it can do on music.
Maybe run the woofer at 2 ohms. The JP83 is still gonna put out over double the rated power.
Love the content man. Will you do a video on best amps for around the 300 350 price?
@farmerstevesolox18s he's not a scammer people are just stupid lol

Great video!!!!! Send that JP83 my ways, I'll give it mo powa!!!!!
Great video. Can this sub be run in an unvented smaller enclosure for SQ? How do those amplifiers perform?
Any speaker can be used in any enclosure. It's just sometimes they are optimized to perform better in one type over another. This sub has a QTS of about 0.49 so it would probably be fine in a sealed box. I don't know if it makes sense to do that, though. This driver is designed to sacrifice some of its musicality in order to get high spl. So it's not really a SQ oriented driver.
If you place sound quality so high as to run a sealed box I would look at a sub known for it's SQ and optimized for a small sealed box.
@@JasonWW2000 Thanks for the information.
Between Gately box and that jp83 that's crazy
I had, well still have but not hooked up to my current car 2 12" kicker comp m subs, nothing compared to this lol but they were great! Worked with everything from punk rock to hardstyle. Very punchy.
passenger window down and meter in the kick would have hit 150 most likely. Agree with you though. 146 sealed on the window is pretty damn good. You're also SPL testing with a 31hz tune. That's pretty sub optimal. Amazing for music though!
Really would like to see what a pair of them can do.
So around 2-3k rms, how long would it last on music. SPL burp is cool but it took only seconds to blow the sub at near 10k. Can it go an hour straight on 2-3k rms?
easy
Yes, the 2k rating is very conservative considering how it was tested at Kicker.
I think it would've survived just fine if he had cooled the voice coils after each burp. He let them heat soak instead. That will ruin any driver and should be avoided.
@@JasonWW2000 I’m someone who plays near clipping for hours straight, on long distance driving. The coil must be able to withstand heat soaking.
@@JasonWW2000 oh don’t worry I knew what you meant. I’d like to see more real world testing.
