Honestly, as long as you pick one and stick with it, most folks won't see the difference, so make yourself happy. Yarn under hurts me, so I'm definitely a yarn over gal~
I’m the same way. Every time I’ve tried yarn under the string will fall off while pulling it through or it just hurts my hand and wrist. I just do what makes the process more enjoyable and less painful
yeah my finished amigurumi are all loved, I've never used yarn under, i might try but if i do it's gonna be for a small one in case i can't keep up with that method for long
@@browneyez1559 It kind of depends! The typical chenille yarn many artists use as pictured here can be more expensive, however, budget worsted weight yarn works great and is my preferred yarn for amigurumi due to the large color selection. It is also easier to learn with due to it's better stitch definition. Let me break it down. Amigurumi uses considerably less yarn than most projects. I find that I can make most projects with one skein of super saver. That being said, amigurumi also has more initial costs. Making a tote, you'd buy yarn, a hook, and probably a needle. For amigurumi, you need yarn, a hook, a curved needle, fiberfill or some other stuffing, and usually safety eyes, though you can embroider eyes on or use buttons if you prefer. These items are relatively cheap, especially if you get a bulk variety pack of eyes to start and replace your favorite eye sizes as needed. I wouldn't suggest getting more than a 16 oz bag of fiberfill until you know if you like making them or not.
I absolutely love you holding up the two swatches with the statement "you can really tell the difference between these two" because no, I absolutely cannot lol 😂
it might be easier to tell with smaller yarn. YO creates segmented fabric where you can distinguish each stitche pretty easily, while YU looks like a consistent fabric all the way through. YO has bigger holes when stretched as well.
Haha, thanks for sharing. I always laugh at myself for the same mistake, although I was relieved for the discovery maybe a month into learning and certainly before any garments. It's probably easy to do learning online these days without someone experienced peaking over our shoulder once in a while.
A lot of it has to do with tension too. I’ve been crocheting for 20+ years and I’ve always yarned under, that’s just how I do it and it’s hard to not now. All of my projects always turn out they way they are intended so long as my tension is correct.
As a begginer you never imagine little changes like these would have such notable impact on the final product. I remember doing my stitches in slightly different ways when I first started and I couldn't understand why the whole thing came out so uneven lol
I tend to do yarn over, but I’ve watched a couple videos lately where they we’re doing yarn under. It’s my understanding that if you are working on an amigurumi project that yarn under is better because it creates those tight stitches filling in the fabric of the project better. It was good to see both done in one video. Thank you.
I didn't realize it made a difference until now. I've automatically been doing yarn under since I started for some reason, and didn't realize I was doing something different until I went to my library's crochet club. I'm learning new things everyday lol
Depending on how much tension you give your yarn as you form each stitch, you will also also see much smaller to no gaps between the fibers. I prefer yu/yo for amigurumi. Gives a cleaner look IMO. But both approaches are great. And depending on the design, yo/yo may yield options to help with additional things the crocheted is attempting. Perhaps you are attempting to weave other materials like fur, felt, or ribbons into your doll? Or as one commented stated, fighting with tighter stitches that yu/yo yields is painful for you? Both methods are going to give great final products. 😊
@@black.I0tussame. I always did yarn over, for the last 15 years as i never had the idea to change that routine. So this short is the first time i hear about this. I think it would make plushies but honestly probably most of things i did so much more beautiful 🥲😅
See with chenille yarn like in the video, I can't see the difference at all but with just a cotton or acrylic yarn, the stitches look so much better with yarn under, imo
@@black.I0tusppl who dont crochet dont know the difference and will likely be happy with either simply bc its homemade. yarn over doesn’t necessarily look messy to me but they both look good.
@@black.I0tus If you have good tension with yarn over, it doesn't look messy at all. I use either one depending on the project I'm doing and what look I want for it, and I love the appearance of both.
I have an issue with too much tension on my yarn so yarn over works best for me! I usually have the same outcome as yarning under and I usually teach yarn over to people who have their yarn too tight because it can help combat that! But at the end of the day do what’s more comfortable for you ❤
Im still a beginner and my very 1st project i used WAY too much tension, so many holes :'( but im slowly starting to get better at controlling it, and its becoming looser now, maybe i will slowly switch to yarn under once its loose enough 😅

I think, yarn under is best to use when making amigurumis like obviously it will make the amis smaller than those amis that's been made by YO and based on my own exp, it's tighter and looks neat.
For amigurumis I actually like to yarn over but stitch into the back loops only, I did it by accident once and liked the way it looked so I kept doing it lol
I learned yarn over was the general method when i started amigurumi and the pattern said to make sure i yarn under and i was like, wait a minute, I've been doing yarn under this whole time
Depends on your hands, joints (going as far as one’s shoulder). When it comes to amigurumi , the yarn under looks amazingly tidy! I’ve tried it and loved it. Also what you’ll make will turn out smaller. Good luck to whichever the way you crochet as long as you are happy and healthy ❤❤
I can tell that there is a difference right next to eachother but I never would have been able to articulate how its different. Its like things being almost a pefect color match but not quite.
I somehow ended up naturally doing yarn under with all my crochet projects and didn’t realize it until I saw a video about how to tighten up your amigurumi. I had been doing the X-stitch, yarn under the whole time! My yarn arts education has been a little wild lol
I learned how to crochet by yarn undering but one day I noticed that the tutorials I was using did over so I reworked my muscle memory to yarn over and just now In this video found out its ok 😭😭😭
Probably wouldn’t use it for a larger project but the definition in the stitches would look great in a plush or something like that! So I get where the amigrumi designers are coming from 😂
Your comparison is the first YO vs YU comparison I've seen where it's distinctly noticeable and honestly it may be the "reason" I haven't been able to figure out why my crochet projects don't look quite as polished as more professional crocheters. And here I thought it may be because I'm left handed 😆 Gonna try it out today, thanks!
There is actually yarn over-yarn under, yarn under-yarn over, both yarn under, and both yarn over. With the first two, while working a single crochet you start by yarning over/yarning under and vise versa.
Im so happy! we use the same yarn!! I've never seen a person who prefers to crochet using only cheneal yarn. I prefer this yarn slightly more than traditional 3 to 4 ply yarns! Thank YOU!!
I prefer yarn under for the light fabrics and yarn over for blanket yarn. I'm very new to crochet and I'm still learning the best practices for blanket yarn.
I'm still learning and it took me so long to learn there was a difference. I prefer yarn under because I like how amigurumi looks with it. But that doesn't mean I won't change it up once and awhile. As long as you're consistent it doesn't matter

I like yarn under. For plushie yarns I don’t see a difference, but on non plush yarn I do see a difference and not having polyfil coming out is beautiful
I’ve found that I prefer just flipping my work inside out rather than yarning over in a different way, it’s flatter on the inside and more appealing to my eye.😅
