    If you really like to use living hinge object you must glue some cloth ( I use leather) on the back of the hinge... this way it will be much stronger and mire durable. ..

    nice job!
    is the pattern engraved or cut ?

    • @epiloglaser
      @epiloglaser  8 лет назад +7

      +Michaela Burchard - The pattern is a series of vector lines that are cut through the material with the laser. The cuts give thin sheet materials the ability to flex and be bent to form curves. We've seen customers use the flexible hinge for all sorts of interesting package designs. You can download the cut file here if you like. www.epiloglaser.com/resources/sample-club/living-hinge-laser-cutting.htm

    What thickness is best? It i tried a board of thin lumber (not plywood), what grain orientation would hold up the best?

    • @benjaminsieber1589
      @benjaminsieber1589 6 лет назад

      We have not tested anything thicker than .25" (6.3 mm), but there are people who are cutting .5" (12.7 mm) woods and getting the same effect. It doesn't seem to matter which way you cut the wood, from my experience.

    how many times you think you can open and close it before will break ?

    • @benjaminsieber1589
      @benjaminsieber1589 8 лет назад +2

      Hi - it really depends on the thickness and type of wood, the climate in your area, and if you finish the wood. Also, if you are bending the wood around a larger curve it will last longer. We recommend testing out your type of wood, but it helps to add a lacquer or finish to the wood to lock in the moisture so the wood doesn't dry out. The wooden hinge will not last as long if the wood becomes very dry and brittle.

      Gr8Success I reinforce the wood with leather. I try 1000 times and will not break.

    What is the little silver tube that is in front of the laser?

    • @benjaminsieber1589
      @benjaminsieber1589 8 лет назад +2

      The silver tube in front of the optics is the Air Assist tube. With an air compressor you are able to blow a steady stream of air through your cuts keeping your cuts and the top surface of your project clean. The air assist tube is place in front of the optics in order to blow the smoke, dust, and debris toward the back of the machine where the exhaust port is connected to your machine.

    How do you bind it/put paper in it?

    • @benjaminsieber1589
      @benjaminsieber1589 10 лет назад +1

      We used removable sticky dots to connect the wood cover to the already bound book in this case. The hinge technique will work best on perfect bound pages where the spine of the pages are all glued together.

    So when i tried to laser out the hinge part, my plywood caught fire. Any advice on how to avoid this?

    • @benjaminsieber1589
      @benjaminsieber1589 6 лет назад

      Plywoods can be very tricky. The glue layers are probably what is catching. Which Epilog Laser system do you have?

    • @jordanfrerichs7629
      @jordanfrerichs7629 6 лет назад

      Our local library just got the laser. I'm not sure of the brand. Apologies for not specifying that.

    • @benjaminsieber1589

      Hi Jordan - the best plywoods for laser cutting are Basswood (model making grade) and Baltic birch in the 3-ply versions in the 3 mm thick range. MDF also works very well with the laser cutters as it doesn't have the glue layers or knots and is inexpensive. Let me know if you have any other questions - I'm happy to help.
