Looks great - really interesting to watch. I think there would be a market for binding those photo books (like the ones you can get from photobox) with wood. I reckon some people would pay good money for a wedding photo album done like this - maybe with a custom laser etched front too.
Any thoughts on how to modify the design to make the cover reusable instead of a one-time use? Maybe have a cloth adhered to the back of the front and back cover that works as a pocket for the front and back cover of the paper fill in?
Thank you. Using a two-part spray adhesive (such as mitre fast), to attach the notebook to the wood. It’s spray on one surface and a thick liquid on the other. When they come together, they react and form the bond. Then clear varnish on the wood.
great video! that was enjoyable, except when i had to mute to background music about 3mins in, just before i killed myself- though sadly not before jabbing a pen through both ear drums, thus losing the ability to hear forever. worth it though. living-fucking-hinges...too cool!
I'm going to run down to Lowe's and get the vacuum press and laser cutter right after breakfast. I always wanted a whole bunch of solid wood book in my collection!
S. Moore Art & Design brilliant! Did you see my video on the multi directional living hinge? You can download the file for free on my website www.productdesignermaker.com
@@SMooreArtDesign Did you ever end up doing it? I'm thinking of buying a laser cutter for just that reason for a community project. Would be very helpful to know if it's worth trying out.
Hmmm. You demonstrated how you bound a book in a veneered plywood cover in which you lasered a living hinge. The subject of the video is binding a book. Your video title implied it was about lasering a living hinge. It is not about that.
@@productdesignermaker As someone who was searching RUclips for lessons on "how to make a living hinge", what I saw here was the first 3:32, or 50% of the 7 minute video, on how you made the substrate via veneering. Then from 3:42 to 4:15 the laser cut the living hinge, with zero info about that process, except that you shared that what is required is that you push a button on the laser. From 4:25 to the end, you showed how you put the living hinge to use as a wood book cover. The helpful feedback is to consider re-titling this video, because it is 6/7 about putting a living hinge to use in binding a book. You put a living hinge to good use. There is no lesson here in making a living hinge. None.
Great video, so relaxing to watch
Thank you. Very much appreciated!

desreed1 Thank you. Yes, they finish really nicely.
These look beautiful!
Thanks a lot! It was very helpful. Great video:)
Zsuzsa Megyesi much appreciated
Excellent

Yeah, could do that. Cloth or even a thin piece of plywood or plastic.
May I know the tool used to clean at 4:27. I want to buy that, may i know what we call it.
vcreata group Hi, it’s an orbital sander.
@@productdesignermaker thank you so much
Could you apply veneer to the hinge ?
There’s a thin veneer over the hinge already. I glued the veneer over the thin plywood before laser cutting.
This is amazing!! Is it possible to make without a laser cutter?
Thank you. Very difficult to do without laser cutter!
What are you applying to the notebook and cover? What glue are you using? Love the video and beautiful work.

Great work. What laser cutter did you use?
Thanks. It’s made by Universal. 60w
Excellent vid....could you make a living hinge just using Plastic I wonder.....with a CNC router maybe?
John Doubleday thank you. I think the router bit wouldn’t be fine enough, but plastic works on the laser cutter.
Does this work the same with acrylic or do you have to do something special?
Yes, it works. It’s not as effective in plastic, but it works.
Where were you able to buy the book pages for the inside?
Jake Pacheco I bought them from a shop called Paperchase but anything similar from a stationery shop would work.
Can you share the File ? Thanks!
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing! Did the book open well?
Grant Trotter thank you! Yes, it opens well but I’m keen to experiment with more hinge designs for other applications. More videos to follow!

I’m doing a video on repairing ear drums with resin and masking tape soon, so stick around! 😂

how much did it cost you?
hey, how did it work out?
Have you ever tried doing the living hinge with just a veneer?
S. Moore Art & Design no, it would be extremely delicate. Worth doing if you have an application for it though.
@@productdesignermaker This is one of the first projects I want to do when I get my laser cutter.

I made it by myself thanks to woodprix website.
Sounds good, thanks for commenting

Wow! Nearly 6/7 of this video shows the process of making a living hinge! Thanks for the helpful feedback!
