  • Happy new year! A cold walk in Xi'an
Officially on my winter holidays now - so 2 months off work! Before getting back to the history, culture and travel, this video is just a walk through a nice part of Xi'an called Qujiang District and a chat about 2020, and some of my plans for the next month or so! My mouth was almost frozen during this video...hope you can still understand me! Hope you enjoy!

What I hate is not the discussion of China's shortcomings, But the double standard that is so evident in the West.

In reality , no matter whatever China does , no matter what or how , the western media and Endia will always find a way to put an negative spin to it .

Hi Nick, once you are back from Wudang mountain, if you find Taoist practice interesting, you can read up on a book by “Road to Heaven” (or 空谷幽兰 in Chinese) by Bill Porter. The book is about Bill’s experience in 1990 in Zhongnanshan(终南山) , which is know to be hermit’s retreat for hundreds of years, and is near Xi’an! This book also helped in China’s renewed interests in hermitage. However, it’s probably not advisable to visit Zhongnanshan for “sightseeing” because these hermits really don’t want to be disturbed.

There are less than 60 persons died of covid in Vietnam, Britain has fewer population than Vietnam, but UK has more than 75000 death related covid so far (on 3rd January 2021). 2020. What a year! A year that future historians will refer to as a “dark time”.
The crap churned out by the western media this year has been eye opening. Sometimes it makes you wonder who's living in an imaginary world, you or them :D
Regarding the weight gain, I share your frustration as I've also put on a lot of weight over the year. So losing weight is my New Year's resolution, but not to the extent of going to the Wudang Mountains to learn TaiChi for a month :) Blimey, that's going to be tough! Really admire your courage. I'm sure you'll rise to the challenge and come out of the other side, being a better self mentally and physically.

I wouldn't call Tai Chi a "martial art". It's not really effective as a martial art when comparing it to other real martial arts, you know the names, especially the modern full contact combined sports used in "cage fighting". In Tai Chi the form/style prevales above the effectivity. It's more like Yoga, so it's very healthy but I wouldn't call Yoga a "martial art" either.

@@gloriagloria5377 One of my ex collegues was and stil is a Tai Chi teacher (here in the Netherlands) and when I was young I did some karate. The most effective styles are the most ugly and simple styles. Tai Chi is very good for body and health but as a fighting/martial arts sport it's not the best. The Shaolin style kung fu (to give just one example) is better as a real martial art. But like many things it really depends on the practioner and the circumstances. You can even knock out Mike Tyson when he's not expecting it (when he's asleep😉)
