  • How to have fun with games again is a topic I think a lot of players need to think about. For years, so many players are locked into a live service game that they may not even enjoy anymore. In this video I will talk about how to have fun with games again, and the ways you can really revitalize the hobby of gaming and enjoy the time you spend while playing games. Thanks for watching. #gaming #gamingvideos

Great reminder. That's how I felt about the Fallout show. Wasn't so concerned about the lore or anything, but was just genuinely entertained. When it comes to gaming, if the industry doesn't course correct, I think we'll see even more hostility toward game preservation and backward compatibility. Having a huge back catalog of games to go to when the industry is pumping out garbage is a direct threat to the live service business model. It's gonna be interesting.

I actually am starting to see some hope, with games like Battlebit, Helldivers 2, anything From Soft touches, etc, there are SO many good games right now, they just aren't always hitting the numbers that the Fortnites do. Indies and the double A games are where it is at right now. The big publishers are going to continue to sacrifice their core audience to go after the algorithmic trend junk, but the core gamers, we will rally behind what's good.

My dude, this is a great topic to cover. I'm glad to hear you're doing what's good for you and what feels right, without feeling the need to play like it's your job, because for most of us it's not. It's supposed to be fun and I find it very easy to forget that fact.
I myself felt the "live service" fatigue some time in late 2022. so I tried some games and genres I don't usually play and it is such a breath of fresh air that I still can't stop.
Started 2023 by diving into the BG3 Early Access and instantly felt it becoming GOTY. It was clear even in the EA period.
Spent the summer discovering a franchise I never played: StarCraft.
Finished the first game and did a 100% achievement run in all campaigns for StarCraft 2. Those games are tough, especially SC1 because it doesn't have difficulty options. With every chapter it just ramps up significantly. Took me all summer because I had to learn how to play that game from scratch, but it was worth it. I fell head over heels in love with that game. I had NO IDEA what I was missing all these years. And the achievements, my god. They are so well designed to squeeze every inch out of the campaign experience without being tedious and boring. And they turn you into a true campaign master by the end.
During that time I also discovered Mass Recall; the SC1 remake in the SC2 engine.
And I ended 2023. by getting Elden Ring and I'm still playing that game, 400 hours later; on my 3rd character and doing no hit no hud boss runs.
I'm at the point where I don't even miss the live service games I used to play. I still cherish all the memories and the moments, but there's a whole world of amazing single player games to enjoy and get good at. PVP is not the only challenge available, for those who look for something to sink their teeth in.
I'm not sure if I'm even gonna get "Final Shape". Maybe, but right now it's not on my radar.
What IS on my radar is "Shadow of the Erdtee" in the summer and STALER 2 in September. Good times are ahead.

Absolutely amazing comment, thank you for taking the time to share masko. Bro... the StarCraft love, oh my gosh. Other than Halo there is no game I love more. In 2011 I got Wings of Liberty and my life literally was changed. I spent the next 3 years playing ladder every single day, and finally got to Diamond 1v1 in Heart of the Swarm. I adore StarCraft, and if I had more time I would still ladder and play. I respect that game more than any competitive multiplayer title, and it taught me so much, genuine real life lessons that really did impact the course of my life positively.
I feel you also on Final Shape... I don't know, I just don't know if I want to go back anymore. Stalker 2... OMG YES! When you were playing SC did you ever play multiplayer? Cheers and thank you

    • @maskoblackfyre
      @maskoblackfyre Месяц назад

@@BBKDRAGOON Yeah, I remember you tweeting something a few years ago about how much you love SC2 and how you used to play ladder way back when.
As far as MP, no. I never went into that. I don't want to fall into the hole of "I need to be good at this" because I'm susceptible to that kind of thinking and it just leads me to frustration.
But I did start watching SC2 eSports regularly. Some of the stuff those guys do is insane.
I'm a fan of Serral and Raynor, btw 😁

I've recently replayed Red Dead Redemption 2, five years after I first played it on release. It's truly the best game I've ever played. Before that, I replayed the Batman Arkham games. They are both amazing series. I am sick of playing toxic PvP games like Counter-Strike, Dead by Daylight, and Escape from Tarkov. They are all either rammed full of cheaters or have devs who are out-of-touch and do not play their own games. I fully agree with you that you can get stuck in a rut playing these awful live-service games and not playing genuinely fun games which you enjoy. For me, that cycle is broken. I purchased Helldivers 2 and it’s been a blast!
I just want to play good games. That’s all I want.

Right after the release of the Lightfall expansion for Destiny 2 it also hit me like that: I was used to playing online with my friends since the late 90s/early 2000s but still managed to get the odd offline (campaign) game in here and there. But those days were loooong ago. As my love for D2 was at an all-time low, I fired up all those single-player games I had bought, but never really played. And man, you can really see the time sink of (online) multiplayer (live service) games, when you use that time to play single-player games and plow through them like butter now. 😂
There are also so many great AA or indie games on the marked, that really are a lot more worth their time, compared to a lot of "AAA open world bloatware" games that are only there to keep you playing and keep you in the game to eventually spent your hard-earned $$$ on an in-game outfit, you will never really see (I am looking at you, Dying Light 2....). Always worth to find a new favourite game or even a new video game genre. 😁

I would also like to add that if you're struggling to find friends for the game you like that most games have an official discord, I'd say to just hop in there and join a lfg chat or something, as I play a lot of unpopular games but finding discord like these still allows to find people to play with and make friends.

agreed man. i know from being in the r6, valorant, and overwatch communities that there's always an inside 'joke' that these players hate their own games. And I really don't think its *entirely* a joke for some of those people since the main appeal of the games are to compete. While being competitive can be fun, it almost feels like a superficial draw to the game since your skill level seems to be the focal point of those games, not necessarily having a fun time - which is probably what invites a lot of toxicity into those communities.
Also thanks for the reminder. I just picked up New Vegas for $10 after watching the show :^)

Exactly, and a lot of companies are doing it intentionally, they have literal economists and psychologists on staff for consulting about systems for investment. The developer of the title matters, some handle it really really well and manage to create a game that delivers on the huge positives of live service like frequent support and updates, while others dip into the dark side and abuse it to milk everything possible from their audience.

Being hyper-focused on wanting to finish, or trying to beat games is what burnt me out on gaming in my mid-20's. Made me feel like I was wasting time, when in the past, I could binge 12 straight hours in Elder Scrolls doing sweet F.A. and feel genuinely content and fulfilled; happy as hell. It took a while to break this habit of trying to 'beat' the game, especially with the live service/battle pass model.
It sounds stupid but just... playing the damn game for the sake of playing it is such an obvious but simple return to "fun" in gaming and really any hobby in general. Really is the journey, not the destination. If the journey isn't fun, putting it down and trying something else is the way to go even if I return to it at a later date for another go

I stopped playing Infinite over a year ago.
In the last few years, I've come to the realisation that I basically want all of my pastimes to be involved around experiencing stories. It honestly doesn't even matter to me if they are good or bad stories, but that's all I want to consume in my free time. For example, I just watched Rebel Moon 2 with some friends (AWFUL) and I'm halfway through reading Gorky Park (excellent). I think I had the same realisation as you in regards to time, but for me it was realising that just doing the same thing over and over (like in competitive gameplay) ended up making me feel like I was wasting that time. I didn't feel like I was "progressing" in something unless there was some narrative attached to it. Once 343 let the campaign team go for Infinite, I was pretty much solidly done with the game. Uninstalled it, see you later.
Having said that, I started playing through Halo's campaigns again recently, in chronological order, starting with Halo Wars and up to where I am right now with Halo 3. And it's been a blast.
I've been checking out custom campaigns and modded overhauls for Halo for the first time, too, including stuff like Lumoria and the Mythic Overhauls. If you want my advice, the modding community is a great source of extra content for Halo, and if you look at the upcoming projects people are making for even Combat Evolved, it's only going to get better and more diverse.
So yeah. Variety is the spice of life, but honestly if you can also narrow down specifically what you want from media and just go for that you'll be happy out. I rarely if ever play multiplayer stuff anymore; the closest has been Final Fantasy 14, which I started this year, but honestly I've just been really enjoying going through the story for that by myself and then hanging out with friends and chatting in-game.

I have a few friends that play the same game maybe every day, not much else, which sounds very limiting and stifling. Like some form of Halo, which i love, but only that? Uninspired.

Trying new things is so critical and I think people just get locked into a loop, which is fine if they enjoy it, but if they aren't having fun, it's time to refocus and recharge

I mained Destiny since the D1 beta and put in thousands of hours, but since around the time Elden Ring came out and with Lightfall being the disappointment it was, I dropped it and have since completed 34 games.
I would not have had these experiences, which I genuinely value, had I not put Destiny aside.
Games like Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, Dark Souls Trilogy, Sekiro, Cyberpunk 2077 + PL, Ori, Celeste, Spiderman, God of War, The last of us, Mass Effect LE replays and so many more. There are so many great games to experience, but if you're stuck on a live service, you'll be missing out on them.
If the live service game you play isn't as enjoyable anymore, just drop it, you aren't a slave to it. As soon as you realise something isn't fun or frustrating - go do something else!

Yo that last sentence is absolute TRUTH!!! and that list of games is fantastic, my goshhhhhhh so much goodness there. I think what you said resonates very closely with me as from 2014-2019, Destiny was my main game. I LOVED Destiny 1, the friends and the time spent there I don't regret at all. But I've never once regretted putting Destiny 2 down after Forsaken. I came back for Beyond Light with my friend Ditty and we had a blast, but I just don't have any interest in getting back on that hamster wheel. There's just too much good out there to waste time on something that isn't fun and also something that is just designed to suck time from you. I don't harbor an ill will towards Destiny 2, I just miss what it was during Destiny 1. I think back then the devs were trying to balance more effectively the demands of the corporate expectations of live service and still deliver a game with strong meaning and creative power.

@@BBKDRAGOON "I just miss what it was during Destiny 1." Definitely agree. Destiny 1 just had a different vibe to how Destiny 2 is, and I honestly don't know how to describe it.

I play a game, World of Tanks, and it is a live service. Way back 2010 I'd be playing CoolMathGames, internet browser flash games (Raze, Plasma Burst etc. for anyone who might know em), and see the advertisements for Word of Tanks and man I love tanks. Couldn't run it until 2021, at which point I started to play the Free2Play style of things
I play this game and it'd shock you to oversee the conditions WoT players will put up with, to learn how deep the pay-to-win, micro-transactions FOMO goes for this piece of work. I play cause I love the tanks, and skill has its place beyond P2W. I get caught up in trying to earn all the extra stuff for the live service model but sometimes, its just good to give it a rest for a few weeks or months.
I dabble in destiny 2 every now and then because it can be good fun, but similarly it has this live service aura.
These are games which at a fundamental level are fun and enjoyable, marred in corporate manipulation taking away from what could be for these products, and I'd wager this goes for more than just these examples of live services.
Anyway I have to get working on the 3 battlepasses in WoT, if I do all 4 dailies for 3 months I may complete them.
