When Top Gear and Carfection upload a review at the same time and you choose Carfection to watch first... that shows how good they really are at what they're doing
If you want to know about the car then that is the correct order. If you want to see someone arsing around for a bit and throwing in a few random facts, TG/GT all the way....
I dreamed that BMW continued the e24 635csi until 1994, and that Alpina stuck the last of the m30 Bi-Turbos in it. Then I woke up and built it my self 😎 Got to say those e36 m3 Vader seats feels good when the m30 big six is forced by two Volvo V70R turbos pumping 1,0 bars of boost...
My dad bought an E30 M3 new in 1987. It was the car I learned how to drive stick in decades ago when I was 11 years old. That car is still in the family, and currently resides in my garage with 87,000 miles. It’s a keeper for sure, I could never see myself getting rid of it. This looks like an incredible car, but I’m not so sure about spending over a quarter million just to make it marginally better. Still an amazing machine nonetheless!
I was born in 1987 so to me cars from 1987 have a special piece in my hart. I want to eventually have a collection with many 1987 cars. I read your comment and just wanted to say I love the story behind your E30. Please never sell that car! enjoy driving it!
I agree about the price. In the video it is mentioned that there were 4000 hours of labor put into building each car, so I imagine at least 60% of the price would be paying for the labor. And while it's a beautiful and incredible car, I don't think it's 10x better than the original E30 M3 or anything close to justifying spending that much on one. At that price, I'd rather buy a Porsche GT3 or GT4 and several laps on the Nurburgring.
Totally agree! I just cannot see an Icon with different front lights or spoilers.. was not like that in the past and that for me is crucial! About the mods? Just give me a "regular" 200hp E30 M3 with no rust/accidents with the upgrade S14 2.5l + Alpha N, BBS RS with Neovas + Recaro Speed, Intrax Suspensión and anti roll bars with powerflex + AP Racing Brakes and the Z3 quick 2.7 stearing rack + quick shift linkeage and thats my perfect car without losing any value 🙌
I fell in love with this car until I saw the price. Not that it was too much, just that it was 330 like everything else. That just smacked of someone in the PR and marketing department putting a sticker price on it to match all the other 3, 30 and 330 bits. It's like failing at the last hurdle. I once saw a Hartge H35-24 back in the day. Now that is even more cool.
I watched Top Gear's review of the Redux M3 prior to viewing this Carfection effort, and whilst the big boys get the key points across well enough, the details between the two videos couldn't be more stark. This film is beautifully shot, the angles are carefully considered and perfectly executed, and the results make this car look every bit as special as I'm sure it is. And of course Henry demonstrates yet again just how well he understands and describes the nuances that make a true classic like the E30 M3, all whilst driving it precisely as intended. Hat's off to the Carfection team - you guys are at the top of your game.
There is a depth of perception to carfection films that I don’t think you can find anywhere else. Clear concise and endlessly interesting. Cracking job. The only car channel worth watching since Mr Harris went corporate.
I always wait to hold my breath for the price of these resto-mods. Seems like unless you have $250k+ you're not even in the ballpark. I mean $330k for a better M3? I love the E30 but that's insane.
Great film as always. A restomod version of the Mercedes 190E Cosworth would be cool especially the EVO 1 which I've always though looks a lot cooler than the bat wing evo 2. On the subject of restomod Mercs the Mechatronik project 107 Merc SLC looks like it is going to be awesome, will definitely need a Carfection video of that when it comes out.
The shift knob is actually a Kamei aftermarket item for the Golf, but BMW used this in the DTM because it is so unbelievable grippy. Without knowing, Kamei made the best shift knob ever. Kamei part number 39140
I love the E30 M3 but I think Alfaholics done a better job of wrestling out the DNA from the Alfa Romeo GT Junior. I tried to push this thought away but here it comes: Lovely car but unfortunate for the guys at Redux that this car smokes from the exhaust. I would fix this ASAP. A new high end car smoking is simply no good. There are also finish issues in door cards, the leather in the seats etc. that must be adressed at his kind of money. I like this restomod, but it somehow seems not entirly finished yet. I am sure the finished car will be spot on. However, you Henry, as a presenter, driver always makes me happy. Thanks a boundle for the video.
Agree with everything you've said. The E30 M3 is my poster car, and I've been lucky enough to drive one. On the evidence of this video, i think I'd rather have a stock car. It also makes me quite excited to see what @retropower are up to. They've recently started an E30 M3 project and I can't wait to see the results. Have you seen the TG video? It smokes even more and the speedo/rev counter aren't working. Did Henry break it? ;-)
@@petegowland6201 I saw both videos now. If it cannot take Henrys beating, then a fist handed driver would kill it in three laps. The guy can drive. This M3 should never ever had gone out for testing by journalists. When you aim that high it is not like you test some boy racers car with the normal brake down issues. Those are build in a shed and you expect them to smoke and not have instruments working. BMW makes quality cars, on both the videos it looks like they have gotten a hard driven 200.000 km example out to test that is on its last leg. When instruments don´t work and finish in the important stuff is shabby, take it back fix it and make a new video. I even think that high tuned engine does not sound right. Back to drawing board before it is too late. Get a proper trimmer and sort out the smoking issue, and BTW when you are at it get the engine up to 9000 rpm too. I have no doubt Redux can do it, a lot of the things are spot on. Get the last 20% right and you have made something really special.
@@petegowland6201 THIS is the Retropower project. 😂 Redux is just one guy designing it. And then Retropower building the car he ordered. This whole endeavour will not last imo.
There's only a few people I can stand listening to talk about cars, you and Chris Harris. You know what your talking about and can translate that into words and emotion. The car is beautiful.
Another great film and an iconic subject. Been looking forward to seeing what this is like since rumours started. It'd be great to see this alongside Mercedes 190E Cosworth similarly prepared and built!
You are by far one of the top automotive presenter/testers in the business. Always cheers me up every time I see a review is done by yourself. Thanks Henry.
Awesome awesome car with good levels of detail and taste. £330k plus an E30 M3? Its an edge case. There is a market for a £50-100k restomod programme that redux and indeed all restomodders should look at. An E30 M3 with revised suspension, stock body panels, retrimmed interior, serious engine tuning and subtle brake upgrades should not cost too much to do and they would appeal to a wider set of true enthusiasts that love the thrill of the road.
Henry, you are the one. No.1 Number One. Ne plus ultra. The passion, the knowledge, the generosity, the beautifully modulated voice, the skill, and the moxie. Long may you reign!
Of all the RUclips car content out there, the only people I watch consistently are Henry Catchpole and Chris Harris. This video confirms why Henry is a worthy click every time. Bravo per usual.
Great video, beautiful car, but that all-n price tag of around £400,000 is insane. I know it's hand-built with carbon panels and a superb engine and chassis, but £400,000? You could get a BMW M2 CS, a good condition E46 M3 CSL and an E30 M3 Sport Evolution with just 492 miles (currently for sale on Pistonheads) for less than the price of one of these. So... this or those three?
Dan Bailey - If you have £400,000 to spend on a car, your choices might be better. But if you have £10,000,000 this might make a nice addition to your collection. The sad part there is a good change the car may never see a track. Just another car in some one's collection of automotive eye candy.
If you follow Retropower and see the level of time effort and expertise that goes into these builds you will see why Redux is charging so much. Retropower built this as a secret project so no vids on it on their channel but check out their build of a mk1 escort for f1 guru Gordon Murray.
Those parting words are exactly why I love the whole "restomod" concept. It's an e30 ME, but the way you remember them, the way you imagine they were. The originals were great, but dated and (blasphemy incoming) actually pretty slow. But if you look at a picture of one, THIS is the driving experience that pops into your head and that's worth every penny imo
Ugh man this thing is incredible. Great vid. I love how you focus on such little things like the rear trunk gap alignment. Had a 325is for a bit and absolutely loved that car. This would be a dream to own!
I enjoyed the video as always. You always deliver. I love seeing the genuine reactions of you driving these cars many of us wish to even see in person. Along with everyone else involved with the production. From producers to first ACs and the PA's first times. Anyone involved with the production of this film, Thank you!
The E30 has always raised goosebumps on me, beautiful car and a incredible driving experience! If I had a spare 1/3 of a million I would have my name on the list. The next restomod would have to be a E34, so understated and underrated, not even a m5 but a well done 525 sport.
I personally own a e36 M3 that I’m working on resto-modding. I feel the e36, although a black sheep among other M3’s, will become a desirable collectors item that will someday see treatments of this caliber.
How can you restomod an E36? If you mean adding cheesy HID lights and trying to modernise it's looks, I wouldn't bother unless you want to drastically reduce it's value. I own an e36 also btw I am genuinely intrigued.
DTM in the 90’s was ruled by high revving 4-cylinder engines . On tracks like the Nordschleife or the old track of Hockenheim you could hear them intake noise screaming from far away. That was unheard off and mind blowing . Still getting goosebumps
Fantastic film, I always love the way Henry does his overview/walkthrough of a vehicle.....I imagine myself looking over the vehicle in person and it feels so natural, almost as if we're having a conversation about it.
I just came from the topgear one and… the standards of this video exist in another universe Cinematography a lot better Info and detail a lot better Henry Catchpole a lot better
This is not just any regular E30 restoration video. This is what I called above and beyond. Well done Carfection. Look forward for more of these videos. Keep up the fine work.
Love this uprated E30 M3 😃👍. It looks even more like a road going BTCC cars with touchs such as the rear spoiler and those wheels 🤩👍. Imagine what a uprated take on the Mercedes 190E Cosworth would like as well... oh boy 😃😎.
Love what they did with it, E30 being my 2nd most favourite Beemer. But its your commentary style that keeps me coming back to Carfection time and tie again. Great piece of Autojournanlism.
Just within the first five seconds of your guys' and Top gear's video, you realize which one will be watched till the end and which will be cut short. Love the work Henry
This is what a car review is all about. No BS-authorative dialogue by someone whos done his homework.Lets not forget where HC cut his teeth all those years ago (EVO )..All the other Vbloggers are in my opinion out on an ego trip looking for viewing numbers, Carry on Henry.
Well done Henry! I always imagine someone doing an E46 M3 as a modern day restomod. All carbon body with a weight reduction to around 2700- 2800 lbs and a Dinan 3.3L blueprinted engine, upgraded suspension. I think they would be a stunning drive.
There are quite a lot of modern e46, meaning upgraded suspension, breaks and a lot of carbon. You can supercharge the engine, but than you maxed the plattform.
he hits on a very important point. A lot of people imagine an E30 M3 drives like this car, they don't and are very underwhelming if you're expecting some sort of rocket ship. The joy in them is their control, feel and ability to navigate around the track. They're also beautiful to look at
Keep the restomod of content coming please! Love seeing these bucket list cars and how they’ve decided to pay homage or reimagine the originals absolutely brilliant, one ask would to be to give us more specs on the engine upgrades and performance and how it compares to the originals
Great film as ever! Maybe Catchpole might get the chance to have a go in a few more machines created by Retropower. See if you can go back and have a go in the Millington engined Alfa....!
Another masterpiece from Henry and Carfection. Road Testing as it used to be..all about the car, not about the driver or TV ratings….I had a new 325i Sport in 1986….that was good but this is on another planet….but so is the price! So today…choose a well cared for 325i Sport and spend on making it perfect. Then you might afford it!! 😬😀😀😀
BMW never made an E31 M8. They did the 850csi but that thing was very heavy, too much body roll and not particularly fast at all. I know Alpina did some very special E31's, but those are still old cars. How cool would it be if a company did a restomod on say an E31 850
Such an unbelievably beautiful car. They really got it right. Nice colour too, always remember that kind of black but green in the sunlight from the Lotus Carlton.
See a video from Henry and immediately click 👍. And when the video turns out to be an e30m3 resto-mod 😍. As someone that races e30s (poorly) and building/restomodding a numbers matching e25m5 "CSL" 3.8L track toy, it's great to see these old BMWs receive modern attention. I have the same close-ratio dogleg gearbox; it's awesome for using all the revs at the track!
How about a video series where you visit these manufacturers? Redux, RetroPower, and all the other small UK companies who specialize in perfecting these cars
I’m not a bit fan of the e30 M3: despite the crazy history of the racing car, dramatic battles in DTM championship, the beautiful racing look and the spirit of the engineers who built it, the experience behind the steering wheel is far from matching all this. The engine is weak below 5000rpm, not crazy after, steering wheel is not precise, the suspensions make me feel like I’m in a boat, the car is very understeering. I have more fun in my old 205 gti... Fantastic video Henry, as usual, and it seems the additional horsepower give it the soul it should have had when launched 😃. But for 300k£, one may find some serious alternatives...
The one about the covid test up the nose cracked me up, man! LOL! Cuz I felt the bloody shock of it through my spine as u mentioned it and with such poise that caught me off guard LoL. Cheers guys!
I would love to watch a restomod of an e30 320i or 325i, cheaper yes but I would say also legendary because that's what the majority of the public ended having access to. Not everyone has the possibility to buy an M3!
I'd like a resto-modded P5 Rover, always fancied owning one. But it would be horrendous nowadays. But of course it would be faster and lighter with a lower centre of gravity, and all the creature comforts brought up to date.

Just within the first five seconds of your guys' and Top gear's video, you realize which one will be watched till the end and which will be cut short.
Love the work Henry
What an art piece
It looks so composed around that track . Wicked looking car . Lottery win money .
Wow. What a stunning M3. Worth every penny.
Superb Henry, it's exactly how I would build it. As always, you've managed to convey the emotion a car like this creates.
This is what a car review is all about. No BS-authorative dialogue by someone whos done his homework.Lets not forget where HC cut his teeth all those years ago (EVO )..All the other Vbloggers are in my opinion out on an ego trip looking for viewing numbers,
Carry on Henry.
when i saw this i asked my self why would i need this....till you started talking and showing fml..wow..love it
I got 30 seconds into the top gear review and switched to the Carfection review, great work guy's
Why do I get the feeling it's priced at 330k to keep up their '3' and '30' pattern... Lovely car, better video.
That's some big brain thinking there. Hadn't noticed that 🤯
Because rich people will pay anything for a 50K car?
Plus the donor car, Yikes! ;(
Well done Henry!
Love these restomods. Would also welcome some more footage of the facilities they build these cars.
Retropower here on RUclips. They built it ;)
he hits on a very important point. A lot of people imagine an E30 M3 drives like this car, they don't and are very underwhelming if you're expecting some sort of rocket ship. The joy in them is their control, feel and ability to navigate around the track. They're also beautiful to look at
Finally an almost Singer type resto mod on an e30 absolutely love it!
It was about time, right. These guys have been working on it for quite some time and it seems to have paid off
Thank you for sharing this beauty!
Keep the restomod of content coming please! Love seeing these bucket list cars and how they’ve decided to pay homage or reimagine the originals absolutely brilliant, one ask would to be to give us more specs on the engine upgrades and performance and how it compares to the originals
This was my first boyhood dream car that went on my ceiling, along side the Jet Centerfold Models :)!
Love the channel, thank you Henry! Keep up the GREAT work.
This kind of car is so much more interesting to me than some 1000hp supercar. What a thing! If I had the cash... Great video as always.
There really is something so good and spot on about a twin cam 4 cylinder sound… 😎🔊
I know right!
Great film as ever! Maybe Catchpole might get the chance to have a go in a few more machines created by Retropower. See if you can go back and have a go in the Millington engined Alfa....!
This is amazing, remember somebody decided to a new Integrale a few years back?, reminds me a bit of that.
Class.
Soon 1m subscribers, keep em coming
BMW never made an E31 M8. They did the 850csi but that thing was very heavy, too much body roll and not particularly fast at all. I know Alpina did some very special E31's, but those are still old cars. How cool would it be if a company did a restomod on say an E31 850
It would be cool if someone restomoded an E31. Funnily enough, the 850CSi had the a VIN number prefix that was exclusive to M cars.
henry you and your team have done it again! amazing, thank you, I'd buy you beers if i could
Still loving that watch, Harry.
Such an unbelievably beautiful car. They really got it right. Nice colour too, always remember that kind of black but green in the sunlight from the Lotus Carlton.
This channel is simply amazing - thank you!
Thank you for your continued viewership! Please subscribe and share to help us produce more films like this 🙏🏽
Lovely car. The E30 M3 is one of the all-time classics, the Redux treatment elevates it to another level.
This is def a better clip than the TG one for sure! Thank you Henry and team.
sooo basically a singer style restomod for an old M3... VERY COOL
Genius. Definitely worth the money. Not sure about the side mirrors, but other than that it's bloody perfection. 😁 neat ☺️☺️☺️
Great film as always from Henry.
Any1 notice the blue smoke though?!?
Hard to locate, maybe Coming from the clutch?
What I really love is that the BBR Gti ITBs and cam I'm about to install on my NC Miata will feel every bit as good as this thing.
Henry Catchpole, your watch is an absolute banger.
A reimagined Alfa Spider 916 would be interesting. I love restomods. Keep them coming👍
The redux and the bbl cars are such an inspiration
Yet again, Carfection content is in another league. Awesome and a joy to watch and absorb. This car would be in my dream garage. An icon remixed.
The one about the covid test up the nose cracked me up, man! LOL! Cuz I felt the bloody shock of it through my spine as u mentioned it and with such poise that caught me off guard LoL. Cheers guys!
Enjoyable and interesting review Henry - thanks - keep up the good work
Great video! A new episode from Carfection with Henry always makes my day!!
Carfection > Top Gear
Another brilliant video and another brilliant car to add to my dream garage !!
Ahhh happy times when BMW designed beautiful cars ….!
Wow it looks unreal this is a proper restomod!
The fact that it retains the E30 M3 feel >>>
I would love to watch a restomod of an e30 320i or 325i, cheaper yes but I would say also legendary because that's what the majority of the public ended having access to. Not everyone has the possibility to buy an M3!
Agreed. A restore 325i would be great.
I'd like a resto-modded P5 Rover, always fancied owning one. But it would be horrendous nowadays. But of course it would be faster and lighter with a lower centre of gravity, and all the creature comforts brought up to date.
Brilliant! Definitely watch this before Top Gear.
We're glad that we are your first choice!
7:37 that slip angle shot is just magnificent
That screaming 4 pot reminds me of 80’s competition Ford Escorts. Such an evocative sound!
Looks fantastic and I love the noise and the color.
