    Randy, the ticking noise in your truck is likely due to cam phasers, not rocker arms. Cam phasers affect performance by controlling timing. If necessary, consult a professional for assistance. Rocker arms have a different function in the engine; they don't usually cause ticking noises. They help open and close the engine's valves as part of the combustion process. Ticking sounds in an engine can originate from different sources like cam phasers, valve lifters, or other moving parts, but not typically from rocker arms directly.

    Sold a Ford few years back. Guy that bought it came back a few days later with it having a nasty tick. We bought it back from him. Figured it was a stuck open valve or something. Long Story Short we let it idle and added some STP oil additive and after about 20 minutes the engine was running smooth. No problems after that. So sometimes these additives do work nicely.

    When you first start the engine at about the 7:05 mark, the oil pressure gauge pops to the middle as soon as you turn the key to ON. AFAIK, it should stay at Lo until the engine has started and built pressure. May have a bad pressure switch or one that was 'fixed', so be careful of actual oil pressure. Failing pressure could allow follower noise if one of the hydraulic (lifter) supports has collapsed and gotten jammed. I would at least check pressure with a real gauge. tom

    • @ericharrison619
      @ericharrison619 11 месяцев назад +4

      The old crown vics were the same way with their oil pressure gauge. It was just a glorified idiot light with a needle with no actual way of reading being between great and oil starvation.

    • @GrumpyUnkMillions
      @GrumpyUnkMillions 11 месяцев назад

      @@ericharrison619 To my knowledge, the switch is open with zero oil pressure, allowing the gauge to stay at zero PSI. Turn the key to ON, and the switch is still OPEN, thus no needle movement. Start the engine, the switch closes, and the needle moves to the middle of its sweep.
      In this truck, key ON and the needle goes to the middle of its sweep RIGHT NOW. Watch again near the 7:00 minute mark. Key is turned to ON, and talking continues. Needle moves to middle before ANY tach needle movement, actually before the tach and speedo needle sweeps to the end of their travel and back. My 90 Mustang kept the needle on zero until the engine started though it may have had an actual sending unit vs a switch. The switch in this truck is broken, and will show pressure when none exists. Cuz it DID that already.

      I have a 2018 also and mine all stay at the bottom or at the reading until the engine starts. Like if I run to the store and park, then go to restart it, the needles go to the reading they would have shown if it was still running. when it starts and drops to idle, the oil pressure comes up and sits about in the middle. But mine is the base model 3.3 V6 non-eco boost.

    That is definitely top end noise. Either cam phaser or cam follower. Also, inspect all the valve tips. They have a tendency to wear down, causing a loose rocker arm/cam follower. Also closely inspect the cams. You might have a badly worn cam lobe or two. I’m absolutely positive it’s a valvetrain issue. My neighbor had a 2019 F150 and two of the cams had worn lobes and 5 of the valves had badly worn tips. His 5.0 sounded exactly like yours. We got a pair of complete heads from Rock auto and they came with everything but the gasket kit.

    Hydraulic lash adjusters. On the 3g Coyote, Ford intentionally reduced idle oil pressure for fuel economy reasons, at least from what I found on the 6G Mustang forum. Valve lash adjusters rattle as a result. Non-fatal issue, they'll run like that. It's also possible that some "expert" might have decided the Ford-spec oil was All Wrong and put something else in it, which could be causing the problem as well. I'd start with an oil change.

    I have a 2013 6 speed with the 5.0 it has 310 thousand miles on it but it still does not make that sound. That sound does not worry me I have a friend with a 2017 he uses for his business and his started making that noise at 90 thousand miles today that truck has 408 thousand miles on it and still going strong

  • @jmanke6057

    Thanks for the video the 6 speed strong but 10 speed can be tuned by a tuner if you can’t adapt
    Cam phasers work off of small oil lines to adjust them for load and rpm so I might add a can of moly next oil change to keep it from ticking

    Get a piece of hose and go searching for where the noise is loudest. Start there when you find it. Probably timing chain. I don’t know.

    could you pull the injectors leads one by one to see if its that makeing the noise best of luck
    and pull the pvc and spray it with carb. cleaner to see if that will stop the clicking..

    After reading some… if that’s piston slap, as suggested, it’s been doing it for some time now probably. 5w20 is recommended oil weight, go up to 5w30 with your Liqui Moly. That may tighten up the tolerance some. That’s pretty loud, May not stop it but it might quiet it down. I have used that on a noisy engine in the past, and it did work well. Again I’m not a Coyote expert- but I do respect the platform. Piston slap is not solved by anything less than a complete rebuild, it’s the skirts of the piston hitting the cylinder sidewalls.

    Before you try anything else drop the oil and put pennzoil platinum high mileage on it. You don't need to change the filter as it's appears that it was charged recently. I did have a morning ticking and pennzoil make it disappear.

      Exactly what I was thinking. Timing guide and chain failures on these engines were fairly common once they got some decent miles on them.

      It doesn't look that way no symptoms of a stretched timing chain or guides either way at 150k miles I would say the owner used it the right way

    I remember reading an article about the Ford announcement on the introduction of the 10 speed transmission. I think it may have been Car and Driver and they asked the Ford spokesman if the new transmission offered improved fuel mileage or better emissions. The answer was not a significant amount on either. The article basically said it offered few benefits with a significant increase in complexity. Then owners were reporting a lot of problems on the early models with the transmission including cases where Ford was buying trucks back with certain problems. There were videos on RUclips about it. Then GM using the same design at least initially reduced the number of gears used on their version of the transmission. I'm not sure where all of that stands now but I would think most of the problems have been worked out by now. As far as the ticking I have seen reports of various problems with the Coyote engine over the years since it was introduced including the ticking. Maybe someone who works on them regularly could comment on what the worst problems actually are and how to fix those problems.

    I’ll tell you this it’s definitely top end and I’ll check the rockers like everyone in the chat is saying. I had a Chevy Silverado did this very same noise and it ended up being a slightly bent push rod that was the reason it was making noise. I replaced it and still to this very day no noise.

  • @cdman78564
    @cdman78564 11 месяцев назад +1

    These don't have traditional rockers. These have roller followers that can go bad flat spot, the roller, and eventually flaten cam lobe. Wouldn't take much to pull valve covers and check.

    Randy change out spark plugs and wires 1st , check the coils fuel injectors do a compression test on all cylinders the driver side tic is louder, a engine rebuild kit is not to bad on the price if you do the repairs

  • @mahatma171

    It sounds like upper end noise. Lifter, rocker arm, OR it could actually be an injector. Diesel injectors have been known to tick like crazy when they wear out. I would not call myself a Ford Coyote DI expert by any means, but I would say with the experience that I have (over 25 years working on vehicles) that the issue is one of the issues I just listed. Try to isolate where the noise is coming from, use a long screwdriver and put your ear against it as you prove different areas. To rule out injectors: If you can unplug an injector, unplug one at a time and if the noise stops, then you know what’s going on.

  • @sv_endless6340

    I do not know these engines, but I had the same issue on a few different other engines with the roller bearing rockers , and i just replaced those rockers and no issue further. relatively easy to replace. I even replace them these days without even removing timing, but you need to know the know how to do it. I will watch further and hear what it is.

    do the cheapest option first, grab some high quality full synthetic 20w50 oil and see how it goes, even though the Coyote engine is a low tolerance engine 20/50 won't hurt it you can always add the "Snake oil" if the 20w50 doesnt quiet it down.

    • @leol6406
      @leol6406 11 месяцев назад

      This is something like what I was going to suggest as well. I've got a 2011 coyote. I run 5w30 but I put in 2 or 3 litres of 15w40 during oil change and it definitely keeps it quiet.

    • @GTFORDMAN
      @GTFORDMAN 11 месяцев назад

      @@leol6406 yea 15w40 would be the first choice actually, unless that coyote has done around 250,000+ miles then I'd use 20w50

    Something you might want to do is check the oil if you haven't already. Then get a long screwdriver, or reasonable sub, and then touch the tip to various areas of the engine with your ear touching the other end of said probe.

    Personally I’d say that it’s not the coyote tick. This noise is much louder. And by the rhythm of the noise It would valve train/timing related. Could be faulty VVT phasers or something with the camshafts and valves.

    • @kieranwilliams3052
      @kieranwilliams3052 11 месяцев назад

      If that it would throw codes . There would be a delay that sets it and using a higher feature Autel or Ford rotunda tool you can advance and retard and if this is phasers you could play a nice toon.
      Don’t ask how I know this lol 😂

  • @makpsv
    @makpsv 11 месяцев назад +1

    Like someone else said, run some injector cleaner (at a higher concentration than the normal.
    And maybe some hidraulic lifter additive.
    I would make sure it has the right oil, Fords tend to use really thin oil and I've seen shops use the wrong one on more than one occasion.

    Had a 2012 f150 5.0 that had the same noise. Rebuilt the engine found that the right head (passenger side) had a lot of wear on lash adjuster bores, replaced head and opened the hole on head gasket so oil wouldn't be restricted noise went away

  • @jasmayfield1

    Possibly timing chain slack. My 2013 had that. Luckily it was caught before any damage was done. Known issue with timing chain stretch on the 5.0’s. Not a cheap fix but way cheaper than a new truck! Cam phasers and chain guides replaced as well. Might as well while it cracked open!

    That tick is known as the death tick but I had a 100,000 on my truck that was doing the same thing when bought before the #8 cylinder fuel injector stuck open and ruined the motor, so I'd say compression check it and run it!
