Oh what a groove you have on you my brother. But then you don't get to play with the folk you have without one. Thanks for sharing Anthony. Stay blessed.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. We all know your busy. It's good to see a young brotha who's talented like you reaching out to your followers . I'll be watching.
Brother! thank you, thank you, thank you... besides being a dynamite player, you exhibit such depth in your playing and understanding of the music. Bravo!
+Cosmik Debris It's as obvious as pointing out how obvious it is. But, some may argue that theory is just as important as groove; and I wouldn't agree with that.
Anthony, you are a MONSTER. I just discovered you and I am now a huge fan. Saw your work with Virgil and the late Allan Holdsworth. Of all the Allan Holdsworth Trio lineups, you and Virgil are BY FAR the best rhythm section. You are one of the only six-string players that actually sounds like a "bassist". Thanks for sharing your knowledge. PEACE!
jbooks888 Groove and chops can coexist beautifully for the skilled bassman. It's not an either or proposition by any means. More importantly it demonstrates the versatility of this most remarkable instrument. Those of us who can play it seek to express ourselves seriously, and to the fullest. Thus, we see the electric bass as our chosen method of voice, and believe that it offers the best of all possible worlds in virtually any musical venue. But, I think that is at least a level or two above the perceptions or the aspirations of some people. In which case, their comments are noticeably and dreadfully without merit.👑🎸🎵
I've been told constantly that I'm the most important cause I "drive the bus", "set the foundation", etc. And I like that. What I DON'T like is being bored. Am I not allowed to play complex lines that are essential to a song?
Groove is definitely the primary function of the bass but it's hard to ignore cats like Esperanza, or Jaco, or Thundercat who have enough taste to apply a ton of activity while still holding it down.
He's talking bout well paid professional giggin' and session work. He says at a certain point: 'You don't need a million licks or total knowledge of all scales, harmonies etc. Unless in a situation were the music asks for it, or you set up a solo project, that's a totally different thing. I guess he means to say styles like jazz, improvised music, written virtuoso parts...he's right, 90% on the radio, the charts etc.. they are harmonically build around about the same stuff. You're not gonna need melodic minor scales or tritone substitutions. Solid groove and a good sense of rhythm, and keep your ears open. I've been in situations were, for instance, the singer could come in a bar early on his chorus, or decides to interact with the audience and stretch the song, well, you gotta be there, you may never put the singer or a soloist in a situation that makes him look bad in front of the audience. Listen, always...be a real bandMate. ;-)
Markus Vinicius most of the time people who use a six string do a lot of chops and chords like atleast 35-50% of the time instead of just staying in the pocket and grooving
I own 4 six string basses. I think I know what they are capable of and how to use them.. I set the groove, lay the foundation, and hold it all down in the pocket. I also embellish my role with appropriate voice statements, that only the bass player with a six string can make. Not at the expense of any of the other musicians in the band, usurping their roles, and overshadowing their content. More at the determination of where that statement fits, is tastefully executed, and adds, not detracts from the overall performance. That is a more meaningful guideline for the competent bassist to follow. Not one that says all you're supposed to do is outline chord patterns with root notes, occasional background progressions, and never assert any artistic creativity. The electric bass is too great of a multi-faceted instrument to stifle in such a narrow minded context. 👑🎸🎵

great video. very wise, very true.
Great tips, I wonder how to apply them to metal such as Witherfall or what do you usually apply to your metal songs
Thanks so very much for this, and what a groove you have!
Great Advice
Groove is everything. Theory is essential as well, but theory is nothing without a vibe, a groove, and swing.
+Eyemallfunkedup
Isn't that obvious?
+Cosmik Debris It's as obvious as pointing out how obvious it is. But, some may argue that theory is just as important as groove; and I wouldn't agree with that.
as a twenty year veteran I can tell you this pays the bills.
marvelous.

thanx man....!!!!
I believe I can keep a solid groove. . . I need development
Hey Anthony, I have a question involving your Gt-10b.. Do you make your own sounds or use the presets?
GROOVE!!!!!!
Bass is all about groove - if you wanna show off your chops, then you're not really a bass player at heart - you need to find another instrument...

have tried the marcus miller sire series bass? if so what do you think?
See you @ the Iridium in Sept 2015 !! w/ Virgil

And besides, they step all over us all the time.
+Cole Emmerson Hallman truth!
man! I dig those low tones, does anyone know the track he was playing with, makes me want to save up for a 5 string, thanks for the help
Groove is definitely the primary function of the bass but it's hard to ignore cats like Esperanza, or Jaco, or Thundercat who have enough taste to apply a ton of activity while still holding it down.
Do you play in standard tuning or do you tune a whole step down?
I make my own sounds on the Gt-10b.
less is more... wise words
What's the name of the tune you were playing along to please?
i know!
What kind of bass is this ?
OK thanks
Is Anthony tuned one tone down?
+mudbuddha109 Yeah he tunes the whole bass 1 tone down.
I tune a whole step down.
Yeah but what about jazz bands with bass licks all over? Your talkin about more standard stuff right?

who makes your bass??
That looks like a Roscoe bass
Nathaniel Haiden keith roscoe www.roscoeguitars.com/
Nathaniel Haiden Warrick
I bet less is *really* more when you've got a clavinet covering the mid-low register.
Thats the filthiest groove ive ever heard. My goodness, sir, you can throw it down.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought it kinda odd that he'd be saying all this holding a six string.
+MP44 ?? Why is that?
MP44 lmao

So tired of this stupid Mindy ad
The first 3.15 he says nothing, and repeats it, and repeats it, and repeats it.
