I have fond memories of a Moon Patrol table top at the Stake and Ale across the street from Six Flags in Arlington Texas that we as a family traded off on 2 player through the late 80's through 90's as we visited the restaurant. Sadly we never did really well as it's a difficult game for those who dont play it regularly. *edit* to release any metal parts from one another cleanly there is nothing better than Chemsearch "Yield" aerosol release agent.
Definitely a super fun and challenging game. And thanks for the tip on "Yield" -- I hadn't heard of that one before!
Bought a Tempest UR local from Ebay, not working, in a barn rotting away. Brother picked it up 2 hour drive. Was stored at brothers house, he opened the cabinet control panel and a mouse 🐁 jumped out, it was in the cabinet for the 2 hour drive home. Scared the crap out of him 😱 , huge nest in the control panel and another nest in the light fixture. 🐭 Always fun to see what is in a cabinet.
I bet your brother wasn't expecting to get a FREE PET as part of the deal!
I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
Me too -- should be fun!
Moon Patrol one of my all-time absolute favourites, and definitely one of my first memories of visiting the arcades growing up in Hong Kong from 1986-1990. Hong Kong now they had some Arcades back in the day. The smoked filled one but also the family friendly ones where I played Moon Patrol. The sounds, music, colours and graphic art of the bezel, no wonder then I bought my 1st ever Arcade machine I bought a Mr Do! Low Boy cab.
That must have been an incredible experience as a kid!
Even the US had cmoke filled arcades in the 80s! Dodgy places as I recall. They felt forbidden, it was great.
It’s called “ambiance!” LOL
Hi from Guatemala. I remember the Moon Patrol, but I remember to jump with joystick not with a button like this one, One of my favorites games, and maybe on the first one I played in the 80's. I played the arcade version in San Francisco Recently on a event close to Pier 39, I'm still good on it!
Very cool! It’s possible Irem licensed Moon Patrol to a different manufacturer outside the US that used a different control scheme than Williams.
If you're worried about the rust on the metal plates then I suggest just submerging them in vinegar for 24/48 hrs and then giving a light wire brush. Should remove all the rust. Then a coat of silver paint and it'll look almost new for less than $10
I think I'm going to try out a few different rust removal methods and compare them. Vinegar will definitely be one of them. Thanks!
Also my favourite game, I will get an upright cabinet this week can't wait to get that working as it is a real project and dont even know what is in the cabinet like pcb and or monitor, but for free I can't complain :)
Free upright Moon Patrol cabinet? Now THAT'S an amazing deal!
Good Progress
Thank you, sir!!!
Howdy my Friend,
Wow, that is a rough game and cabinet, however for $200, if the only thing you could save was the K7000 monitor, than I call that a very good deal, I really like those monitors, really good quality, and sought after, I am currently trying to locate one of those monitors to replace a CRT in a multicade, I'm not a fan of those in classic Arcade games, just not not the same I grew up playing in the 80s, I look forward to seeing you getting thus classic up and running again, Stay safe, God Bless and game on my Friend 🕹
Thanks, Arthur - I’m confident we’ll be able to save the entire cabinet, but I was definitely relieved to discover the monitor was working 100% right off the bat!
I meant LCD, not CRT lol
@@arthurok327 CRT is the way to go!
@@overtimearcade I agree 100% 👍
Darn, too bad you left it closed for a year and rotting like that instead of taking parts out and let it dry up:(.
Nah, it was relatively dry when I first got it, I pulled the board set for safekeeping, and it dried out in my hot garage all summer.
Just restored both a 1979 Sega Monaco GP cabaret and a 1981 Donkey Kong Cocktail Cabinet 🌈🏁Fresh Powder Coating applied to both cabinets
Nice, those are both great games!!
@@overtimearcade Well connected with ❤️Richie Knucklez, Billy Mitchell and Marcel Gonzalez.
Sweet game I played as a kid. Love the videos Charlie!
Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words, Carl!
I have the moon patrol cocktail myself - the instruction sheet is hard to find - I have never found a high quality scan of it - only a few google image searches of low res.
A viewer sent me a high quality scan a while back - I’ll share it on KLOV when I get a chance!
The easiest way to get that seized screw out is to drill the head off the screw. Then the cabinet isn't damaged. Once the control panel is out the way you can get vice grips on the remains of the bolt and be able to get WD40 down the thread😋
I tried drilling it off-camera, and nearly ignited the residual ATF fluid!
🤣😂@@overtimearcade
That plywood looks dunzo.
We'll see... I'm going to give it the old college try with wood hardener, wood glue, bondo, and fresh laminate. 🤞
Look forward to seeing how this progresses. What a mess!
Thanks - we’ll make it nice(-ish) again! 😅
Looking at the burn on the monitor, that was definitely on an Operation Wolf cabinet at some point
That’s it! I was trying to remember what it was. Somebody pointed that out in the pickup video last year too, I think.
@@overtimearcade I've been playing Operation Wolf pretty heavily on my MAME cab lately so the burn in from the ammo and grenade graphics on the side stuck out big time to me, lol
I'm not sure you can save any of that wood man, that stuff is all swollen is delaminated.
Challenge Accepted!
Good luck@@overtimearcade !
I have an asteroids deluxe cocktail that I got for dirt cheap but it was sitting in a shed with a hole in the roof😅 needless to say that it is very rough
I do think cocktails stand up to falling rain better than uprights!
@@overtimearcade for sure, when my parents first bought their house around 25 years ago there was a garage with the roof collapsed onto a burgertime arcade and the only thing that could be saved was the marquee, it was the worst condition arcade imaginable😅
Oh wow! I'd love to have an original Burgertime cabinet to restore!
For future reference, if the screw head is visible/accessible, you might consider drilling the screw head... Once enough material is removed, the remainder of the screw head should become weak enough to remove the control panel, without damaging it... The remainder of the screw can then be dealt with...
For the rusted parts, consider investing in a container of Evaporust... It's safe to use, and reusable!
I tried a damage screw extractor set off camera, and nearly set the ATF/acetone mix on fire!
For future ref - A screw extractor on a bolt that long it pointless. Either drill the head off with large bit or cut it off below before it threads the nut.@@overtimearcade
@@overtimearcade Well! That would have been sub-otimal, now wouldn't it?😛
@daveweston5158 Sure, but it would have been compelling content!
@drewbeattie6346 I suspect you’re right!
Moon Patrol... one of my favorites and hoping to get one someday.
Fun game, and such catchy music!
For the rusted parts, consider investing in a container of Evaporust... It's safe to use, and reusable!
Thanks! I’m thinking of comparing a few different techniques!
@@overtimearcade Bonus fact; If you use Evaporust with an ultrasonic cleaner, the results are better and faster...
I've got some big parts to remove rust from -- are large ultrasonic cleaners expensive? 😬
It is interesting that Moon Parol uses the upright 2-way joystick instead of the Williams cocktail one. In reference to the coin door and control panels, that coin door almost looks like it was supposed to be a Robotron coin door and was re-purposed for Moon Patrol. Really cool vid, can't wait to see more!
Oh wow, are these really not the normal two-way cocktail joysticks? Were those a different design from the upright style, or just shorter? Also, what did you see on the coin door that suggests Robotron? Fascinating stuff!
Moon Patrol is definitely on my wish list!
I can’t wait to play mine! 😂
That monitor is nice! lucked out on that one!
I know, right? I was very happy to end this episode on a positive note!
Someone recommended PB Blaster to me once, and I had to throw the parts away. That stuff smells like satans butt... no one tells you that. It stunk up my garage for over a month. Awful nasty stuff.
Yikes, I didn't know that either! I'm glad I didn't try that stuff then -- my wife gets on my case when the garage smells like bondo and isopropyl! LOL
Hey I have a Carnival. Having problem with sound. Has a switching ps and the audio is very, very faint and distorted with a constant beeping sound. Help!
Do you have the correct voltages going to the sound PCB? Have you recapped the sound PCB? Has it only recently started having this issue? I’d also reseat and suspect any chips or amps on the sound PCB.
@@overtimearcade well, it’s in storage and I bought it with the sound issue. I know a bit more about checking voltages now than when I bought it, so I’ll take another look soon. Do you know exactly what I’d recap on the sound board? It’s been hard finding info on Carnival sound issues.
Looking at the schematic for the Carnival sound PCB, there are only 3 electrolytic caps that you might try to replace, as well as several tantalum caps that could potentially go bad. There's also the LM741 amplifier on the sound PCB that's worth testing/replacing.
@@overtimearcade I’ll take a closer look. I know next to nothing. I do know that whatever is wrong effects the game sounds + music
That era of Sega/Gremlin games can be particularly tricky. Is there someone local who can give you a hand if you need it? Otherwise, there are people you can probably send it out to for repair work.
I most likely would have drilled out the head of that bolt with a bushing as a guide rather than split the wood myself.
I tried that off camera -- it didn't work and I nearly ignited the automatic transmission fluid! 😂
Of mice & moon
I’m surprised they could survive in the lunar atmosphere! 👨🚀
What is going on with the Sega Out Run cabinet?
Which one? 😉
@@overtimearcade Cabaret?
WHICH ONE? 😉😂
They’ve multiplied! I’ve got two now!
Its incredible to me how resiliantly these cabinets were constructed back in the day. Quite literally, they were made to last -- perhaps not with an eye for the '20s, but to last nonetheless. It shows a kind of respect for the artistry and creativity that went into these games. Their very size and weight make them a literal burden to some, maybe, but a treasure to others. I like that. Thanks for letting me wax poetic.
I love your signature laugh when things get hairy btw
Williams plywood cabinets were really well made. Nintendo and Atari were pretty good too. Taito and especially Sega/Gremlin particleboard cabs on the other hand… they basically crumble like granola!
It’s nervous laughter 😂
Many thanks for sharing this update! I fondly remember the “Moon Patrol” cocktail table from a game room in the giant pool atrium of a Holiday Inn from when I was a kid. Great fun! I had the thought that the plain wood grain sides would look great stencilled like the upright Williams cabinets of that era. Original is always cool. Also, looking online, I think a bunch of these started out with a 13” screen, so perhaps your unit was upgraded.
Oooh, that's interesting! I looked at some photos of other Moon Patrol cocktails, and I see what you're saying now. I wonder if some shipped with 13" monitors and others shipped with 19" monitors, perhaps some of which were factory conversions? I'll have to take a closer look next time I dig into this thing!
Chatting with the wife, she remembers seeing a bunch of those at pizza restaurants. A smaller screen is handy for the plates, and cheaper. Does Williams or anyone have the brochure for these anywhere online?
She remembers seeing a bunch of Moon Patrol cocktails BITD? I don’t think they were particularly common. I found a Williams Moon Patrol manual that lists a 19” 19K4903 monitor for the cocktail cabinet on the second-to-last page here: arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Williams/Moon_Patrol_Preliminary_(16-3007-101)_Aug_1982.pdf
Many thanks for sharing this! I’d like to have one of these someday as we both remember these sorts of machines fondly. The use of quality plywood makes them attractive as well. It almost looks like building a nice copy would be practical with the right plans and materials.
Williams always built nice cabinets, at least in this era!
Mouse Patrol.
At least I didn’t find any live ones!
