I was never particularly good at it, but I always went straight to Outrun every time I entered an arcade. A touchstone to my childhood. Another excellent refurbishment.
@yadaroni The secret to win was basically to remember where the "death curves" were, so you had to slow down, in contrast to the rest of the travel that you'll do full gas. Traffic avoidance was a thing, but quite a secondary concern.
Thrilled to finally see it on the floor! The restore is gorgeous and well worth the wait. I grew up past the prime time of arcades, and this was one of the few cabinets I have memories of playing out in the wild. Getting stand in front of it as an adult is like reuniting with a best friend that moved away in First grade 😌
In an autobody shop they call the little bumps or "trash" in the first coat of paint "nibs". A good way to remove those is by cutting about an inch off of a paint stir stick then wrapping a fine grit sandpaper around it. It's a good little sanding block.
Great job on the cabinets! Glad you went with the black t-molding, totally agree about hot pink w/ synthwave aesthetic. But come on man, "Passing Breeze" *is* Out Run.
In time, all the electronics (CRT included) will rot, and there won't be replacements for them. The solution, then, will be to emulate the game using a more modern board and eventually replace the CRT by a more current display system.
The working turbo outrun pcb would have sold for more than that by itself on eBay. But Smarty pi’s outrun boards are the way to go these days. Great video!
I didn't know there was a stand-up version of Out Run. I remember playing it on a cabinet with a seat that swang sideways to simulate the centrifuge of the curves. The CRT of that contraption was also huge IIRC.
even if reusing the t-molding isn't ideal, its still better to have the used stuff on to protect it at least until the new owner can do their own refurb work.
Great episode and nice restoration! The only advice I'd add is to remove the monitor and give it a wash. Of all the games I own, Out Run's design makes the monitor not only hard to access for dialing it in, but also makes it the filthiest for attracting dirt. Out Run monitors are always caked with dirt. Any cleaning it will prevent failure in the future.
Great restore! 👍The 2006 version of Outrun is my favorite arcade game. The original is great too! I wish Sega would make a new Outrun game in some form even if they didn't or couldn't re-license Ferrari. I like 2006 for the arcade style driving feel and scenic courses. It could be even cooler with different types of cars.
$550 for Outrun in ANY condition is insane. In my area you could find half of a left side panel that someone cut in half to make a coffee table out of and it'd still be sold as "RARE SEGA OUTRUN PROJECT CAB $1999". Living in Texas is just playing this hobby on easy mode.
I love your videos and I've been working through the backlog. If i could make one suggestion, a shirt mic/clip on mic would do wonders for audio clarity as sometimes its hard to make out what you are saying when you are doing things, otherwise keep up the great work
Great video! The start button had a bulb! I bought chrome bolts for the dash that made it look more auto like from Ace Hardware. Also the mat can be found at an online floor mat seller. Where did you get the side art from? Need to replace mine!
Hi, huge Outrun fan from the UK here. Excellent job on this, turned out really nice (and congrats on getting quids in on that Turbo OutRun cab you sold at auction). Quick question for you: What was the stuff you were spraying on the artwork vinyl and on the cab itself when you were applying the art? I've not see arcade art applied with any kind of a spray before.
I'm not a t-molding expert by any means, so I don't even know if its possible. But I couldn't help thinking it would've been really cool if you would've added a red racing stripe down the middle of the t-molding on the front of the cab, to match the racing stripe on the front.
Definitely my second favourite arcade game growing up ( I am now 53!.) (My first was Firefox but i can't ever see thst coming to your arcade unfortunately. unless it's through emulation because of the use of the laser disc.) The thing with the outrun cabinet is i much preferred the sit down cabinet. I played it for hours in the arcade. Do yiur kide still help you out? I noticed in your a lot earlier videos that your daughter Autumn (lovely name, i am guessing thsts when she was born?) seemed to really enjoy helping you out. Anyway, thanks for the video's. Blue T-moulding all the way. I would prefer a darker blue, but any blue would do me.
I personally liked the Galaxian light blue, and I don’t think it clashed with the red stripe at all.
