This Toyota Camry is suffering from ABS activation at low speeds, but why is the Check Engine light on?
Let's see if we can 100% accurately pinpoint the issue and maybe even fix the vehicle before handing it over to the customer.

Your diagnosis was spot on and the fix was even better!! Just had this on my mother in-laws 05, cleaned up the surfaces, reinstalled ( NO O-rings on OEM). And no more abs activation at all! Thanks for a great informative lesson!
Brilliant diagnostic and straight trough repair! Ivan! As field tech - You need wire bruh and grinding wheels in Your tool box for fighting Rust Belt "REAL RUST" more efficiently. Magnalube MIL 900 marine grade grease, it works much better than fluid film. Magnalube is not washable and designed to withstand salt water penetration - can bring permanent rust protection and lifetime problem solving.
Those are my favourite repairs,,, no parts needed. Great one Ivan
I used your exact technique on a 2002 Sequoia. The front sensors had the same "bent" problem and it was causing hesitation during acceleration and ABS activation at low speeds. It even caused ABS to activate when decelerating slowly. The skid light was coming on and was a hazard when trying to pull out into traffic or going up a steep on ramp. Thank you thank you! I cut a washer in half and put it under one side of the sensor under the hold down bolt on the side opposite to the sensor and that helped to tip the sensor further down in the hole. At first my symptoms sounded like a recall Toyota had on the 2003 model (NHTSA 10V176000) where it would activate at 9 mph. Coincidentally, this is exactly what my Sequoia was doing but mine was caused by the bent plastic. All fixed!
I found the problem by using an oscilloscope (Analog Discovery, Digilent) and measuring the AC voltage like you did. It was around 50 mV peak-to-peak on both front sensors. After adjusting, it it was > 100 mV on one sensor and > 250 mV on the other when spinning the wheels by hand (quickly). That seemed to be enough for the computer to detect the wheel speed.
It's amazing what rust jacking can do. It's equaling amazing what you can do with a scope. Well done Ivan.
Yup, without a scope you wouldn't really know how effective the fix would be. "before" and "after" shots are key!

I have a 2011 Toyota Avalon and was getting an ABS & Trac Control light. No other lights. No issue with rpm, or brake system. Pulled the sensors and one had crud on the magnetic pick-up. Cleaned it up and around the mounts. Lights gone. Replaced the pads & turned the rotors while we were at it. Just wanted to say thanks. This is a very informative video. Cheers

"...these sensors come out so easily!" Interesting problem Ivan. Honestly, I'm doubtful that those are even the right sensors! Every sensor I've ever replaced either had an o-ring on it or fit quite snugly into the hub. With that loose sensor fit salt/debris seems to certainly make it's way into those bearings IMO. You resolved the problem for sure and your diagnosis was certainly correct but man the fit on those sensors seems off. Thanks!
I think the sensors were original. Just the way they made them. And the bearings are sealed units, the ABS sensor hole just looks at the tone ring which is pressed on to the CV axle :)

Just done a wheel bearing on 2013 Mitsubishi and the bearing is sealed and one of the bearing seals is actually magnetic for the speed pick up

That hill right behind you is part of what was the largest garbage dump in the world at the time. And across the river to New Jersey was known as Cancer Alley due to all the chemical factories there. Those were the good old days.

ey , thanks very much for this video , i have a similar problem with a Toyota Solara and I was able to identify the problem , customer brought the car to her favorite mechanic ( S ,,,, Back yard mechanic ) and he disconnect both ABS sensors and charge her tons of money for speed sensor that she don't need and still no able to fix her problem and try to tell her she need a new transmission , well i was able to find what they did and fix it and charge for diagnostic , thanks for such great info you always share
Hi Ivan, I use a cordless drill to rotate wheels at a constant speed. I can even vary the speed somewhat. Just tighten the chuck up with no bit in it and push the side of the chuck up onto the tread of the tyre and just pull the trigger. I get beautiful even scope traces, Iv'e found glitches in the tone rings hat are built into the wheel bearings

I always wondered if anyone else did that. I used that method to find an intermittent drop out on a transit connect van. I looked at it 3 separate times and everything seemed to be ok. So 4th time i rigged up a jig with a drill and a castor wheel on a bolt to spin the wheel. Caught it in the act.

It's the only real 100% way to prove the problem and verify the repair...

Awesome. I really like the diagnosis and repair right there with the customer. I've been taking my truck to the dealer with the same two problems and they keep telling nothing is wrong. I need to travel to you. The dealer keeps taking my money but I wish they would just fix the problem.

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics exactly! I was brought up if you take care of your car it will last you a lifetime. I have a 96 Continental, 02 Grand Marquis and a 12 MKZ and they all look and run like new. I know how they operate and their own little qwirks. So if something is off i can feel it and i immediately have it checked. One of my friends had an Infiniti G30 and had a check engine light. She let it go unchecked and a month later left her stranded on the highway. A simple check of her transmission fluid wouldve shown she had a small leak. Guessing maybe the gasket or the plug? Im not sure..but the mechanic said a $5 part wouldve fixed it..now its in the scrapyard needing a new transmission.

Great diag and fix! Now you got a YT fan's car to fix. That's a first for you, Ivan! I've been plagued with ABS issues. Turned out the sensor was too far away from the tone ring. I admit I was part cannoning it. But had to think of Eric and Ivan. What would they do? Scope it!!! Hahaha. So I did! Lol

I have seen this awesome videos, and I will really appreciate any directions given for my issue. Have shown to multiple mechanic shops, but not results
Car: Toyota Solara 2004
Check Engine Light ON: PO500 (Changed),
Cluster: Replaced(USED) and as problem didn't go away, put the original back.
Issue: While driving, TPMS light, Brake Light, ABS light comes on for a second, Speedometer drops to zero. Shift with a jerk. And then everything gets back to normal. Initially it used to happen every 30-45 mins, now it happens every 1-5 mins. It's using more gas than before.
Any advice, I will really appreciate.

Great video as always Ivan, but, if I may... You can buy little wire wheels at harbor freight for a few bucks that you can put on your drill, stuff the hole, and buzz the rust off in 2 seconds.... A little set of 5 would be very handy to have....
Yeah, I do need to find something more effective. Maybe a 3M rust remover disc. I have tried wire wheels, but they just polish the rust instead of flaking off the chunks...

Related : Many Ford products have similar sensor, but the metal tip of the sensor extends out about 1+". After a number of years, this piece simply corrodes away. Cleaning it does not help, so you must replace the sensor.. Also fine metal filings from the disc brake rotors build up and must be cleaned.
Awesome diagnosis. Ivan- your truck could really use a small gas powered air compressor, and a generator. Maybe- a whole new work truck is in order. Nothing fancy, get a "fixer-upper" from an auction, CL, etc.
I do have shop air and a 400W inverter onboard :)
Get one with pink and blue bears included.
I said that- because a green cookie wheel would've zapped that rust off PDQ. Soak rust with ATF and it removes very easily. Yes- rust jacking can easily warp or crack plastic, as in this case. Heat gun could've re shaped the ears. The bottom of the bore could've had buildup, too. A DAB of RTV around the sensor barrel would've acted as an O-ring. At least all turned out well, and you've gained another day of experiences. Next time- look back on this, and all of our "woulda-shoulda-coulda" crap here to help.

Most vehicles i work on are shitty rusty turds not far from the scrapyard and I'm amazed that the ABS stuff works on a lot of them. Even my own vehicle the knuckles are rusted to hell but the sensors/tone rings are still in fairly good condition. With all the salt and mud and cow turd that gets on the suspension i really do wonder sometimes.
Hah I also wonder the same thing...sometimes a car looks like crap, but mostly everything somehow works!

good fix Ivan, however tool lovers everywhere are cringing at your use of chisels and files. I like the shim use, would you have been able to fit a cable tie around there to pull down the sensor?
Well there was no place at all for a cable tie in that location, and it might weather away and snap off with time. The shim is pinched in place and will not corrode away :)

I notice there is still rust in the hole where the sencer close to the ring that could keep the sencer from going al the way down.

The connector harness and the abs sensor ripped out when my tire blew and now my speedometer isnt working my ebrake light is on and the abs light is on could it be a short in the system? If so how can i fix it thank you in advance

If Check Engine light is off and no codes stored then car is happy :)
With the engine off (Engine Speed 0) fuel trim data is redundant. The best you can decipher from that LTFT at engine off is the computer has learned to add 10% more fuel at initial start-up than base factory programmed amount.
Ivan nice fix, but put some sandpaper in your toolbox as well.
The Rear sensors are installed behind the Hub, its better to buy a complete hub rather than trying to get em off, yet i have never seen a bad one, what goes bad is the harness that plugs in the sensors and goes behind the rear seat and plugs into another harness

I have this same code on my 2010 Toyota Corolla. I believe this is my exact problem with my car. Can you tell me what would usually be the cost for this kind of repair? I’m getting it check tomorrow to confirm, but just trying to see what I may be looking at for repair cost?
I've bent metal into a z shape before, have it under bolt flat and tall so it contact the far side of sensor top first, when bolted tight it pushes and holds sensor back flat.

At 23:10 it looks like the steering knuckle has a huge crack leading to the tie rod end.

i'm guessing its flakey rust scale. does look like a crack but cameras and lighting do funny things but definitely deserves another look see.

Parting line for the stamping mill. Look at 28:12 for more.
Yes that is a parting line but it's on the other side.
A battery operated dremel with wire wheel would scrape off all that rust quick and easy. No need for the hammering and chissel.
Bad Drivers of North Texas Angle Grinder with a flapper disc or Roloc type disc works a treat on flaky rust, even a biscuit works but in my experience a wire wheel mostly just 'polishes' it! Yes a really coarse wire cup in an angle grinder would work better than a puny one in a Dremel. Rust flakes like that need to be 'hammered' or other similar aggressive treatments to be removed.

I have a 99 ES300, got a P0500 code.
Check engine light on as well as traction control light on.
Odometer goes blank.
But other than that, car runs fine, speedometer works, idles fine.
Would the procedure done in this video be the fix?

I get the same error code when I drive above 6 miles per hour. The speedometer works fine. I was told either ECU is bad or the speedometer cluster!! Do you think if I clean the wheel sensors at front, it solve the problem. And how about rear wheel speed/ ABS sensor?

I have 2009 Corolla code is P0500 and its come only when car is in parking and i accelerate 5000 rpm when i drive my odo work fine and ecu vss single are fine and no trouble code i am stuck on this weird code
hi i have a similar issue but at high speeds, once the speed hits near 75 it completely drops off for the remainder of my trip unless i go under 20 mph and or come to a stop and then it resets.

What if u couldve use your snap-on. Scan tool, like on a 93 ford f150 with high idle, lack of power and some serious back fire, how could i diagnose that ivan.
