  • Welcome back! After a couple of rocky weeks fixing our previous carpenter's mistakes, we have learnt to trust again and are ready for our bannisters and spindles to be installed. We take the risk on a new carpenter and LUCKILY it pays off - our stairs are almost complete and we are thrilled! We also get cracking on the dressing room after a couple of weeks wardrobe hunting.

    The stairs look so good! I'm so glad this carpenter was better, that last guy did you dirty. I think it may be time to invest in a part sprayer to save you guys time, pain and suffering lol

      I was actually going to buy one a while ago but I read online that oil paint wouldn’t work in it!

    Tip for the old newel posts: use Zinsser bin or 123 primer it’s very good and don’t need to remove old paint. Gives a smooth finish but stop any stains showing through your final coat! You can rub the zinsser down before the final paint for and even better finish! This stuff is honestly amazing!

    • @FeedbyAutumn
      @FeedbyAutumn  2 года назад +1

      Your comment came just in the nick of time before painting them black (although we did attempt to sand them, not the best finish). Funnily enough we actually bought a tub of this primer for the wardrobes, will give it another coat before painting then - thanks for the tip! We were dreading removing old paint from the other parts of the house 😂

    I’ve never tried it but saw this as tips for painting spindles.
    “A neat, fast way to paint stair spindles or other hard-to-brush objects is to use an old sock. First, put on a rubber or latex glove, then slip the sock over your hand. Dip your covered hand into the paint and apply it. You’ll cover the entire surface, including all the details.”

    Good job on finding a good carpenter. You've given me a good Idea to ask what tools they will use to judge the quality haha

      Hahah it’s a pretty effective trick - when he started unpacking the car we were suddenly like “oh THAT’S what carpenters are meant to have!”. A mistake we won’t make again!

    I do hope your carpenter gets work it’s very sad that he is such an amazing guy and lost his job, the house is coming along, can’t wait to see the next steps. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both 🎄

      We spoke to him yesterday and he’s now got another job until May - very happy for him. I think he prefers long term contracts because of stability as opposed to doing smaller, more frequent job.
      Merry Christmas to you too! Thanks so much for all your support this year ☺️

    the walls actually look good with the black spindles. i know things show up different on camera than in person.
    im glad you like your new carpenter. im only an investor but i have this thing with roofers running of with my money. they always say eave emotions out of this business but how can i? im getting better though, at finding reputable contractors. these houses that i renovate are always over 100 years old, no big deal. buckingham palace have been existing for over 300 years, right, so bring a 100 year old building back to life should not be that difficult. well, thats if i was doing the work myself. i have to rely on licensed pros and that where things get hairy.lol.

    I think I would have spray primed those spindles, or use a rubber glove with a sock over it to dip in the primer and wipe it on.

    • @FeedbyAutumn
      @FeedbyAutumn  2 года назад

      We tried the sock trick but just couldn’t get the hang of it! If left so many drips and streaks - I think we used far too much!

    I wish I had commented "google the stair spindle sock trick" after your last staircase painting video but I thought it was too late. 😬

    • @FeedbyAutumn
      @FeedbyAutumn  2 года назад

      Someone had mentioned this and I gave it a go - but I just couldn’t get the knack of it! Kept coming out really streaky but I’m not sure if it was due to the oil paint?

    Hi Autumn
    Can I ask where do you look for your tradesmen. If it’s online maybi know which websites you use? Many thanks

    • @FeedbyAutumn
      @FeedbyAutumn  2 года назад

      It’s always a bit of gamble with tradesmen on the internet. We’ve found some ok tradesmen on mybuilder before, we tend to take reviews from checkatrade with a pinch of salt.
      We found this carpenter through Google. Tom just found a bunch of numbers when searching ‘carpenter east London’ and messaged all of them. Once they got back to him with their quote he then asked to see photos of their work and from close inspection this guy seemed to have a really high quality of work.
      For bigger tasks such as the shell of our loft conversion, we got actual references from people and visited a couple he had done previously to make sure it was to the standard we needed.
      Hope this helps ☺️
