Rocket engine efficiency demonstrated with Simplerockets 2 and SpaceX Falcon 9

- Today I think it is about time we talk about rocket engine efficiency and in this episode I’m going to demonstrate some of these principals in a simulation (Simplerockets 2) and then compare how that matches with a real life rocket such as a SpaceX Falcon 9. Luckily for me, to demonstrate this, the latest Simple Rockets 2 update comes with some spectacular new features which have gone under the radar a little… until now.

I like how simple rockets isn''t trying to be a KSP clone and they've put their own twist on things.
Jeff Vader they’ve literally done a better job representing actual rocket science than ksp.
That’s Jeff Vader, that is.

@Stephen Witwick too
@Stephen Witwick HA ME TOO
Let me ask you this though. How many grass blocks have you ever flown in KSP!? Mind blown! 😂
Made me want to buy SR2 and test that on reentry
Marcus House wait you can fly it?
Like it is an actual space craft?
10/10
I remember seeing SimpleRockets 2 for the first time a couple months back thinking it won't really do well....but now, from the direction the game is going, i think i will buy it.
I hope they nail realism well because this could be a way of teaching kids about simple rocket engineering etc.
Same here. I thought it was a cheap knock off of ksp just like space flight sim. But then they got better and better.
It is also free for public educators :D
The best thing about it being free for educators, means that they'll probably focus more onto getting the physics and proper feel for rocket engineering, to be educational. I would still say KSP is educational but the game is a game, just like SR2.
Btw I can’t see how sfs is a knock-off of ksp...
@@unimaginablefaliure799 you mean SR?
Me - I don’t see what this could do beyond Kerbal
“...and you can adjust the chamber pressure, nozzle diameter and engine bell size...”
Me - take my money
So, it's your older brother's KSP?
I WANT THIS.
Ive been making replicas of real life engines using xml in this game, god do i love SR2
Have you been able to judge how accurate their modeling is relative to real life specs? SR2 might even be useful for trying to estimate characteristics of Raptor/BE-4/misc new engines depending on how accurate it is :D
vaporcobra dont use SR2 for rl specs they nerf Isp by a good amount normally by 30-40s its definitely not accurate to real life in that respect, to change aspect of the engine using its xml file to get rl performance, but thats bc it would be a bit op to have rl performance in a 10x smaller system. But its definitely good for learning the basic of engine design and its still an amazing game :)
2:55 "not even I could tell you off the top of my head what the nozzle length chamber pressure and this sort of thing is going to affect an engines performance"
can somebody call Scott Manley?
I wanna get his verdict on whether my ship will fly safe
If the Nozzle length is smaller then is more efficient at sea level otherwise only in vacuum
Idk about chamber pressure
Hush hush, don't let KSP see how I play SR2.
You know, much as I prefer the KSP aesthetics, there is one category where SR2 simply takes the cake here, and that's engine exhaust. Even with realplume KSP doesn't have exhausts that look this good.
And they call it *SIMPLE* rockets…
T-65B X-Wing Fighter simple as in you mess with sliders to make adjustments. Better than other games where you have to input variables manually. And the slider adjusts in real time kind of like need for speed carbon for ps2 as you could slide to change the shape of a cars body kit which I miss so much like why has no other game adopted that simple yet effective feature??
@@known3617 He probably doesnt own this game🤷🏼
Well it's not exactly rocket science...oh wait. ...
I didn't realize this existed, I've literally been dreaming of this!
I think, this all is just an elaborate plan to make us all into Scotts Manleys
lol
“The community has really been growing and making some real cool stuff” *minecraft grass block*
The genius of this game which KSP can't compete with is how almost every custom shape and form can be made from fuel tanks alone, reducing individual custom part count massively. Its like the procedural fuel tanks and wings mod for KSP but taken to the next level
Yeah but ksp has its own style and uniquness to it and it has kerbals and other stuff

I do have two sets of keys to return. A few little scratches I'm afraid (should buff out).
Great work making them!
Great video. Presumably dynamic pressure also affects the exhaust shape and efficiency - well, in real life if not in SR2.

I actually just subscribed so that I don't miss any new videos about Simplerockets 2.
I'm just a simple keyboard warrior who's here from a random RUclips recommendation, but you made me understand a couple of things about rocket science _except without_ the massive university-level mathematics required to make someone, well, a rocket scientist. Good video!
Another excellent, well researched and well structured video Marcus, well done.
Damn, this is absolutely amazing, and I sorta wish this was implemented as a mod for KSP. Might give SR2 a try whenever I can.
This is probably one of the best ads that I seen for a game. It's amazing how much tinkering goes into making an efficient rocket. Really look forward to 2030s

More power is always the answer

Another interesting point to rocket efficiency would be the Oberth effect. The engine produces constant force no matter your speed, but if you're going faster you're covering more distance in a given time, thus for a given burn duration, you do more mechanical work since work = f*d. The way I like to think of it is that is from the perspective of a static observer the distribution of kinetic energy being split between the rocket and the exhaust starts to favour the rocket more and more since the exhaust is going in the opposite direction and from a static observer will appear to be slower and slower, despite having the same relative velocity from the perspective of the rocket satisfying conservation of momentum that if producing that constant force.
Momentum conservation: Happy
Energy conservation: Happy
Mission planners: Happy
People that like learning cool physicsy things: Happy
Jeb Kerman: Happy??
You know what, I'll do a video on it, it could use some juicy animations.
Yes very true. I did an Oberth effect video many moons ago with KSP.
@@MarcusHouse Awesome, I haven't seen that one before, must have been before I knew your channel. I'll check it out now.
the best of SR2 is parody spacex rockets :)
I'll probably get this game soon, I'm getting kinda bored of KSP after +2500h, and SR2 looks so damn nice
I really like how Sr2 lets you customize everything whereas KSP only gives you presets.
Anyone else wait and finish the Chris Hadfield Master Class Ad?
Every.
Single.
Time.
Simple Rockets 2 seems to be pretty similar to KSP, minus Linux support (although they use the Unity engine), heck, they could also just take the game and don't give Linux users support, a lot would be fine with that, it' not like the would need to rewrite the game or something, (mostly) just recompile it (which is just letting the computer run for some time).
Also, I think Linux users (which are mostly computer nerds or people who want more privacy) and space nerds (which is quite likely the main target audience of games like this) have a pretty high intersection I think.
This dude playing minecraft music in the background and a minecraft block was a creation lol
When can we see Realism Overhaul on SR2?
Ujwal Bhagat when they add modding support which they plan to do in the not to distant future.
There are several mods about it
I wish there where custom engines for ksp, then I will not need tens of mods for ksp that add engines for RO and RSS, which adding more mods makes the game do slower obviously.
I bought the game and barely used it, this makes me want to play it again.
Nice video Marcus! I'd love to see more videos like this, not that I'm against Kerbal. I'd love it if you gave Simply Space a watch 😁

amazing! wish KSP would do more of this....
I'm currently waiting for a sale but while I wait I've got a question; Is it possible to build a giant centrifuge to at least pretend it provides spin gravity for the ship's imaginary crew?
You can make your own engines? I'll buy it right now no questions asked!
Im in love with SR2
Hydrolox amazing fast going
Dude this is like childern of the dead earth umm.. its a game if you didn't know where you can make your own rocket engine and any type of fuel you want you can even build your own space ships and hydrogen bombs and thermonuclear bombs and even cannons this is so cool
Edit:but still ksp won't be killed due to this because ksp has its own style and its unique and it has good EXPLOSIONS AND MOAR BOOSTERS!!!!!
Nothing against u bud I agree but man I could barely read ur comment what is grammar LOL
Damn well I guess I have to buy it now
Hi @Marcus House I have been a subscriber for a year now I love your videos
Hi there Corey. Thanks for watching.
your welcome wouldn't miss it
When you can tweak the engine, you know it's better than KSP
forget everything else I want to fly that grass block
Please do more SimpleRockets 2!
I'm buying this!👍
Great vid. Q: If rocket engines are constantly increasing in efficiency as they ascend, how is that different than your top example of an undersized nozzle hurting performance at sea level? Is being under expanded at sea level significantly more taxing to performance than at altitude?
"massive creativity" such as: *minecraft grass block*
Kwality Kontrol Squad? Someone dropped the ball there. Why not Kwality Kontrol Krew? Oh wait.
This game is wonderful! But for any mobile players a iPhone 11 Pro highly required with an Apple battery case. This iPhone is the only phone to play this game at high quality with good frame rate ( 40-50 FPS ), snapdragon 855 phones don’t run that well ( around 15 FPS on medium/ low settings ) hell my s20 ultra runs high quality 20-35 FPS which is better but not nearly as good as iPhone. And the battery case is so you don’t rip through you’re iPhone 11 Pro Max battery in 2 hours as you can easily do. The case gives you roughly 4 hours of play time altogether. But the phone will get very hot and the screen will dim automatically around 15 minutes of playing.
In simple rockets 1 we only had 4 or 5 rocket engines and all of them were called sloshey
as soon as its out of early access i am going to replace ksp with this one

Really looking forward to career mode.
Nina Dragonborn rescue your kerbals first or they will be stuck there for an eternity
@@videodog4526 yes it will take a while for simple rocket 2 to come out so i am going to stick to ksp until that time

Try simplerockets 2 in 2022 the game is even better
Dude can you review the Sailors Update 0.9.509 update or maybe 0.9.600 because of the cool graphics update.
I think you flipped the expansions. How is a plume getting too big called “under expansion.”
Do you still have to control rockets using that weird on-screen control or have they updated that?
Giglefreakz you’ve always been able to use wasd.
The problem I have with this game is how to control rockets, I absolutely hate it

I wish this game was on GoG like KSP as I'd rather buy it there then on Steam.

*made on earth*
Will it allow me to experiment with using the engine throat as a venturi to add various liquids to the exhaust bell and so see how increasing exhaust mass effects the low-altitude performance of an overexpanded bell?
Or in other words, will it let me explore paths that haven't already been exhaustively traveled before me? If it doesn't, what benefits does it even bring to technological advancement, or the mind in general?
That doesn’t work for engines a lot larger than fuel tanks
At least SR2 is faster on my ancient pc than KSP
Why i don't have this game yet?
Is It possible for programmable flyes in this game? 🤔
Only simple planned burns
@@gxexrxmxaxnx how? In KSP u can use KOS or kRPC, but how in SR2?
@@slava5486 There's a vanilla burn gizmo that helps you determine necessary dV for your target trajectory and it has the option to do the burn automatically. It's not perfect though, most times you need to do a tiny manual correction maneuver for planetary injections.
@@gxexrxmxaxnx that's not really what i am talking about. I mean fully porgrammable flyes like in KSP. And what's about modding in SP?
@@slava5486 As far as I know, there's no way to have programmed flights. Modding is still very rudimentary, there's a real solar system mod and other small additions, but there are no really serious mods. At least most parts are procedural so there isn't a need for a million mods adding fuel tanks, engines and wings like in ksp.
If only it was on Linux...
Simple rockets 2 may actually better than KSP because you need mods to make KSP look better and simple rockets 2 you don’t need anything to make it look somewhat similar to KSP so that’s why I recommend simple rockets 2 more
Wait so you can't just go with the slogan "moar boosters"?!?! My life is a lie!!!
Shut up and take my money!

Jundroo is developing it for PC and Mobile. No word on any console versions.
Is it a game
I refunded this game a few days ago, should I get it bac
Michael Vernon yes
I think you mixed up over and under expansion. Under expansion quite obviously means not expanding enough, hence the shock diamonds. Over expansion also quite obviously means it’s expanding too much, hence the ridiculously large plume.
I beg to differ. Go read up on it some more. Where the external pressure is higher than the exit pressure, it is referred to as overexpanded.
Marcus House I stand corrected. Thank you for the newfound knowledge!
It is counter intuitive. :)
I recall I was confused by it when I was making that same video.

우주도지 OOOOOOOOOOF
I tried to get into SR2, but I am completely put off by the control scheme. Its the most clunky thing ive ever seen in a video game. It seems like a pointless move to segregate itself from KSP just to be different. So basically fixing what isnt broken.
Oof, even kerbal is quite bad
I think it's a heritage from SR1, a result from being designed to be played on mobile devices. The only difference is SR1, being a 2D game, has the nav circle, while SR2 is a 3D game, hence the nav sphere.
At this point I think all KSP has on this game, is kerbals... ksp better up its game.
