Very sorry for your loss Kurt. I lost my mom in 2017. The baby boomer parents gave us such amazing childhoods and they really worked hard to shape the 80s and 90s for us. It’s very sad.

I had a similar relationship with my mom. We didn’t talk the last few years before she passed away. I tried but she was stubborn and just couldn’t let go of whatever her problem with me was. She missed out seeing her only grandkids and they never got to know her. It bothered me but I have my own family and had to move on. I have grandkids now and would never do anything to ruin the relationship I have with them or my own two kids. Keep doing the great videos.

I think we could all have videos like this about places growing up. I could go around my original home town and, even though it tiny, talk about all sorts of places where I made memories. It’s amazing the impact certain small things have on you as a kid. Sometimes I have had trouble relating to people, because I feel like I’m one of the few people who had both of my parents my whole childhood, all of my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, a consistent middle class income/life, and no tragedy or hard times. With the majority of my friends, that wasn’t the case. Ironically though, my adult life has been a pretty big failure, while many of my friends growing up who struggled are doing amazingly today. I’ve also been estranged from my only sibling and sister for 10 years this year, over several different issues. I suppose that’s life. What can I tell you?

Born 1977 in NY: I had a similar relationship with my mother - some incredible memories as a kid (McDonald's, summertime, playing with cousins, Toys-R-Us, running errands, etc) and unfortunately we were not close when she passed away 8 years ago. am so very sorry for your lost, I loved the tribute to your Mother, I lost my Mother just 5 years ago she was a rock. she took very care of my brother and myself on her own at the age of 42 after the passing of my father in 1964, she made me the man I am today from my time in the army 71-77 and becoming a Police Officer growing up in Canyon Country. Kurt, I have the same exact memory when I hear the Monkees theme! I am 3 years older than you (born in 76) when I went to Kindergarten it wad still 1/2 days back then. Everyday Mon-Fri my mom would pick me up and I would eat lunch while we watched the Monkees on TBS. I am the middle child and watching the Monkees every afternoon with my mom is the one unique memory that my mom and I share that my sisters didn't get to experience. Sorry for your loss.

When you mention how you could always count on your mom being on time to pick you up, it reminds me of the times I would have to work until 2 or 3 in the morning, I was also too young to drive, my mom would get out of bed and come get me every night for 3 baseball seasons. I don’t get along very well with my mom either. Never forget the sacrifices our parents made for us.

Hey man, exact same situation with me a few years ago. I hadn't spoken a word to my mother in almost 11 years when she died. It was very weird... but I can say this: when the time is right, she'll show up in a dream and you two will be able to talk it out.

One thing I noticed: Saticoy Elementary looks SO MUCH like Blythe Street School, as I remember it. That was where I went from 1980-1983, until we moved just to the other side of West Hills, in Simi Valley. I am going to have to visit my old n'hoods when I go back down there at some point.

Sorry for your loss. Losing a parent around the holidays has to be hard. Me and my father were estranged, I too didn't get to say goodbye. He died in 2021, then my mom in 2022, im only 39. How I coped was I had a lot of anger on my end, and I would talk to my father as if he could hear me, and doing that gave me closure.
