Was cool to hear about the different creatures. As a knitter and sometimes spinner I'm now slightly terrified by being taken out by the Yule cat! In Italy until very recently the one who brought presents to children was the "Befana" an old woman carrying a sack and a broom. She brought gifts on January 6th. When i was little we would hang socks on the rim of our huge range hood on the evening January 5 and in the morning they would be filled with candy or coal if you had been naughty. Then if you looked under the bed or near the tree you might find other gifts. It was altro traditional to go to big parties often organized by employers clubs or social clubs where children would receive gifts purchased by the clubs)
Top tier yule lads are bowl licker and candle stealer! Could you imagine in the past waking up and it's dark you try and make breakfast and school your wooden bowl are covered in dwarf saliva 😅

I painted a Mari Lwyd figurine this year ready for Christmas. I remember hearing about the Belsnickel watching The Office and at the time presumed it had been made up for the show.

That was fascinating, and a fun thing to watch this afternoon! My family has kept various older European traditions going, in our own ways, over the decades. We're learning a bit more every year. We're too big of a "tribe" to celebrate the season on one or two days, so we've spread things out right into the New Year. -Wishing you a lovely Yule season and a Happy New Year! 🙂
Been reading grettis viking saga and he gets attacked by monsters during Yule tide so seems to be a tradition of supernatural stuff during Xmas .always nice to hear my local north east accent in RUclips

Greetings from Loveland Colorado in the US! This made me think of the elf on the shelf thing that seems somewhat new (last 10 years or so)…my kids are mostly grown now but they each had elves assigned as kids, not the commerialized ones I see now, but more fairly looking ones that would move around overnight. If they moved it meant they had something to report to Santa so they had flown to the North Pole, if they hadn’t moved it meant they must have been well behaved that day (or maybe mamma forgot to move them)… my kids would stare at them intently and swear they saw them move or blink. As they grew up the older kids would help move them for the younger ones. I still put them out, really fun memories for my adult kids ❤

Not just a place in our minds but it's more of a need then just a story. Especially now with the gradual decline in religions. Sorry I'm having a hard time trying to ask the question I'm thinking of. Do you think western society is having an extensional crises of meaning lately? That's a bit of extreme way of putting it, my dyslexia and autism are strong tonight.
