Mia Goth deserves a Best Actress Nomination for her sinister and spellbinding performance in Pearl. Too bad she won't be nominated because the Academy hates horror movies.
I don't what it is about horror the Academy looks down upon. The Exorcist is the best example of a horror movie receiving tons of nominations, so the genre has the potential to make waves during awards season. I'm not sure if it counted as a horror film, but I think Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth sense was the last time I heard of horror film performance nominated for an Academy Award.

Agree that Hong Chau was great in The Menu, outstanding among a very strong cast. If she was anything like as good in The Whale (which I've yet to see)...
As a director id say Jordan Peele for Nope should get a nom. Not the best film however as a film maker I think the film is uniquely him more than most directors on the list can say.

Really hope she gets some awards attention, if not this year then in the future
Thanks Dan For All The Love For RRR & yeah it should get best picture & best director nom, The Way SS Rajamouli Made The Film is just unbelievable, i really hope we get best picture nom, the director nom looks tough but not impossible , but in our hearts he is the best, as best song is fixed, both the leads are going to perform the song so its going to be awesome, even james cameron praised the film so much, he saw it TWICE, & said he loved everything about the film we was so excited about it . we was jumping & was on the seat. he even said to SS Rajamouli that if you want to make a film in hollywood let's have a talk & even Spielberg praised the film. This just blows our minds.

@@DanMurrellMovies Agreed. Personally, it came out of nowhere, I hasn’t gotten a lot of buzz where I’m from (Mexico) hope to see it soon in theaters over here. Great show man!
I watched Hustle because of Dan's recommendation and was really impressed. Because he can put out outstanding performances when he wants, but his name is synonymous with goofy comedies so he's just not taken seriously. Which is a shame. I'd be on board with a nomination for the Sand Man.
You were pretty accurate with your picks! Especially with that call out for Andrea Riseborough. I'm definitely going to be watching your videos from now on. Thanks for the great insights.
Great video! I know there’s 0% chance of it happening but if I were in charge I’d nominated Alexander Skarsgård for The Northman. Amazing physical performance.
The Northman was in my top 10 best movies of 2022, and Alexander Skarsgard was a beast in that film. I've seen the academy award physical transformations before (Nicole Kidman in The Hours), but very rarely do I think they nominate actors for physical prowess. The last one I can think of was when Mikhail Baryshnikov was nominated for best supporting actor in The Turning Point.
I don't care what happens the rest of the night but all I want more than anything in the world is for An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) to get the best international feature nomination. As a Gaeilgeoir, to see an Irish language film reach such a huge milestone will just be such a historical moment!
I can see it happening, but it's also been a great year for cinematography. Aside from Top Gun Maverick and Avatar the Way of Water, I hope The Northman gets a nomination.
Glad to see someone shouting out Felix Kammerer for an Oscar nom! Also hoping Janelle Monáe can sneak in as a dark horse cuz she really did carry that movie on equal footing with Daniel Craig. Great picks!
Surprised you didn't add any Animated Feature segment but I feel it'd be very close between Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and possible Puss in Boots but I think the Academy would give it to Pinocchio
In regards to "Network," Ned Beatty also had one scene and got a nomination, so Judd can look to two nominees in one movie to give him hope he can score his second nomination, 42 years after "Ordinary People."
There's a feeling that they might pull a Judas and the Black Messiah situation and move Michelle Williams to Supporting Actress. If that happens she would probably be the frontrunner to win that category.
One thing I think you could very well see this year is a relatively rare split between Best Director and Best Picture. I truly have no idea which way the seesaw might go, but in the desire to reward both TAR and EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE, we could see voters choose EVERYTHING for Best Picture but go for Todd Field as Director (or vice-versa for TAR and the Daniels). One of the reasons for this is that the Academy may truly struggle with wanting to reward BOTH Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett but trying to find a way to dice the onion, or split the baby, via other categories, so the Actress award, whichever way it goes, is balanced out in some fundamental way.
So glad to see you pick Hong Chau, I am rooting for her.....hopefully the SAG and Bafta nom will help her get her Oscar nomination, she was snubbed for Downsizing.
Quan should take it, but if Harrelson in Supporing in Triangle of Sadness dont get a nom there is no justice... and i am stunned you don't even mention him! De Leon also stunts out in the same movie. Chau in the Whale as supporting. Also Deadwyler should get a nom as lead... Lets hope for Riseborough... And for BA Fraser, for BAs Blanchett
So, are you some sort of wizard, Dan Murrell, or do you have a very close friend inside the Academy? Because you've hit a pretty nice bullseye in almost every category you talked about in this video. Nicely done.
loved Decision to Leave, and really hope it gets some academy love! btw, Tang Wei is pronounced t-"AH"-ng wei, rhymes with "song" or "Shang Chi" which you pronounced correctly.
I haven't seen To Andrea and I've never heard of Andrea Riseborough but the groundswell of support for her is super cool. Even cooler that high profile actresses are doing a viral campaign of sorts for her just based on her performance. They don't have the millions that producers have access to for these campaigns, they just like the performance that much!
I just watched Nocturnal Animals last night. Andrea Riseborough had only one scene with Amy Adams, but there was something about her portrayal that made me want to know more about her character and her character's marriage to a gay man. I think it says something when an actor/actress gets a small role, but swings for the fences regardless of screen time.
@@mabusestestament Those For Your Consideration campaigns have a way of gaining momentum for movies that nobody had interest in (I'm looking at you, Crash (2005).)
@@mabusestestament You know it's bad when people still talk about all the other movies nominated for best picture that year (Although it's hard to say if people still talk about Brokeback Mountain for its heartbreaking portrayal of forbidden love, or because we lost Heath Ledger too soon.)
Someone for Best Director that you hadn’t mentioned but could be a wildcard pick since he hasn’t been nominated anywhere (by awards bodies or critics groups) is Alejandro G. Inarritu for Bardo. He’s a 2-time back-to-back Best Director winner, notable members of the Director’s branch have signaled his direction for Bardo as something they love (Barry Jenkins, Chloe Zhao, etc.) and it could be that in the international passion pick that could surprise many people. Bardo is a divisive film but those that love it really love it and Inarritu is certainly beloved by the Academy in some respect (the man has 5 Oscars under his belt).

I'm hoping Paul Mescal gets a nomination for After Sun. The film and his performance stuck with me for days. All Quiet on the Western Front deserves a lot love and attention. One of my favourite films of the year with outstanding performances. The Banshees of Inisherin for all the top awards. Certainly my favourite film of the year. Austin Butler deserves a nomination. I do find it hilarious though that he hasn't dropped that Elvis voice yet! The longer he keeps this up the weirder it gets. The only strong feeling in the Best Actress category is the Michelle Williams should NOT be nominated. Such an over played, annoying, nauseating performance in my opinion. Some of the films, like The Whale, and Triangle of Sadness, haven't been released here in New Zealand yet. Thanks for sharing your picks and predictions. I look forward to this vid each year
I can’t believe a basic cookie cutter action movie like Top gun maverick is getting so much Oscar love. People are so used to marvel movies they see top gun and think it’s some kind of well written original “film”
My predictions of some of the top award categories... PICTURE: All Quiet On The Western Front, Avatar: The Way Of Water, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Tar, The Banshees Of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Glass Onion, Top Gun: Maverick, Women Talking DIRECTOR: James Cameron, Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Steven Spielberg LEAD ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, Viola Davis, Michelle Williams, Michelle Yeoh LEAD ACTOR: Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, Adam Sandler SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Angela Bassett, Jessie Buckley, Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu SUPPORTING ACTOR: Paul Dano, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, Ku Huy Quan, Eddie Redmayne ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Everything Everywhere All At Once, Tar, The Banshees Of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Triangle Of Sadness ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Glass Onion, Living, She Said, The Whale, Women Talking ANIMATED FEATURE: Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Inu-oh, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Turning Red
Shocked by The Ana DeArmas nomination which took slot of people like Viola Davis or Danielle Deadwyler. The Blonde film really got alot of negative reaction not long after its release
I hope All Quiet On the Western Front will be in the nominations pool -- one of the best films of the year (there really hasn't been any hype for it) but it has fantastic performances and great writing.
What Dan Murrell would choose if he were the Academy and did get nominated score sheet BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - 4/5 BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS- 3/5 BEST ACTOR- 3/5 BEST ACTRESS - 2/5 BEST DIRECTOR - 3/5 BEST PICTURE- 4/5
I still don't understand how timothee isn't nominated for bones and all. And Taylor Russell. Just like cage was ignored in Pig last year. I'm definitely not into the academy awards as I used to be.
Andrea Riseborough has been in a lot of at least mid-profile movies in the last decade or so, I don't think anyone watching the Oscar noms will be asking themselves "who is that?" if or when her name comes up :D
Great video Dan! I tend to base my choices on my personal favourites, and then break them down into likely and unlikely. -Likely Top Gun: Maverick for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Original Song, Sound, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Visual Effects The Northman for Best Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Score, and Makeup & Hairstyling Prey for Best Actress and Costume Design The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent for Best Original Screenplay The Batman for Best Production Design -Unlikely Beavis & Butt-Head Do the Universe for Best Animated Feature Dio: Dreamers Never Die for Best Documentary Feature
I’m going to do mine slightly different, saying which awards I think some overlooked movies should be nominated for. The Northman: Picture, Director*, Cinematography*, sound, editing, production Pearl: Picture*, Director (a stretch, but I wish the academy acknowledged the skill necessary to direct a great horror movie; it’s like comedy but harder), Screenplay*, Lead Actress (* means I have it winning on my list)
Man, I’m totally on opposite sides with Dan on The Fabelmans acting. I thought Paul Dano and Michelle Williams were fantastic and I don’t really get the Judd Hirsch thing. I mean, he was good in that scene, but one of the 5 best of the year? I don’t know
These broadcasts are always a lot of fun to watch, especially your choices rather than your predictions. While a few of your choices were not necessarily on my own personal list of whom I'd nominate if it were up to me, I don't disagree with any of them. I'm really glad that in the best actress category you t least mentioned Emma Thompson (my choice for best actress, if the award were mine to give) and Andrea Riseborough ( if To Leslie had had any money behind it I think her terrific performance would have at least been in the conversation all these past months).
16:37, I'm only 25 and I love that movie, that movie was the first time in years that I was sitting in a theater being mesmerized by a performance I was seeing on screen(Austin's performance)
It took a while to figure it out - sadly, it seems like he and Gerard Butler have just given up on people properly pronouncing their names and are just rolling with our butchered pronunciation.

My favorite video you do each year!!! I look forward to seeing how many you get right, and your reaction
Giving rrr an Oscar and both actor dancing natu natu will break the internet
I second that
I think there's a very good chance Naatu Naatu is gonna win
bless you for acknowledging Felix.
I look forward to this vid each year
Absolutely THIS
I'm rooting for Deadwyler over Blanchett tbh
Indian Jury messed up by not sending RRR for Oscars Foreign Film category.
It would have been a sure shot nominations and It could have a win as well.
Dan, I'd love for you to watch "Close" when it gets released in the US. I think you could like it!
Love this video every year, loved it at screenjunkies still love it now!
I can’t believe a basic cookie cutter action movie like Top gun maverick is getting so much Oscar love. People are so used to marvel movies they see top gun and think it’s some kind of well written original “film”
My predictions of some of the top award categories...

Man, only 5 minutes in, but just always love your take on things. Be safe, brother!!
_All Quiet On The Western Front_ has 14 BAFTA nominations, more than any other film this year.
@@pattheplanter I saw, and well deserved I don't think it's getting much buzz though in the US.
What Dan Murrell would choose if he were the Academy and did get nominated score sheet
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - 4/5
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS- 3/5
BEST ACTOR- 3/5
BEST ACTRESS - 2/5
BEST DIRECTOR - 3/5
BEST PICTURE- 4/5
Mia Goth certianly had one of the best perfomance of 2022. I dont know why these people dont recognize performance in genre movies.
The Academy owes Janelle for snubbing her for Hidden Figures
Thanks for the overview.
I still don't understand how timothee isn't nominated for bones and all. And Taylor Russell. Just like cage was ignored in Pig last year. I'm definitely not into the academy awards as I used to be.
I wanted to like the Elvis film, but honestly Tom Hanks took me right out of the film every time he was onscreen.
Andrea Riseborough has been in a lot of at least mid-profile movies in the last decade or so, I don't think anyone watching the Oscar noms will be asking themselves "who is that?" if or when her name comes up :D
I really loved Jamie Lee Curtis’s performance in Everywhere. I’d like to see her win.
Fantastic, great list Dan! I’m pulling for EEAAO
I think people are underestimating Viola Davis status. Hit every precursor, beloved, and has been campaigning.
Babylon for Best Picture
Thanks Dan, Great Video!
Great video Dan! I tend to base my choices on my personal favourites, and then break them down into likely and unlikely.
-Likely
Top Gun: Maverick for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Original Song, Sound, Cinematography, Film Editing, and Visual Effects
The Northman for Best Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Score, and Makeup & Hairstyling
Prey for Best Actress and Costume Design
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent for Best Original Screenplay
The Batman for Best Production Design
-Unlikely
Beavis & Butt-Head Do the Universe for Best Animated Feature
Dio: Dreamers Never Die for Best Documentary Feature
I’d really like it if Adam Sandler got nominated. I’m not a huge fan of his or anything, but when he chooses to act, he can act!
Thank you for the video, Dan! I really appreciate it! :)
Andrea Riseborough is a legend. She'll get a nom soon one day ❤
on tuesday ;)
😃
I’m going to do mine slightly different, saying which awards I think some overlooked movies should be nominated for.
The Northman: Picture, Director*, Cinematography*, sound, editing, production
Pearl: Picture*, Director (a stretch, but I wish the academy acknowledged the skill necessary to direct a great horror movie; it’s like comedy but harder), Screenplay*, Lead Actress
(* means I have it winning on my list)
Man, I’m totally on opposite sides with Dan on The Fabelmans acting. I thought Paul Dano and Michelle Williams were fantastic and I don’t really get the Judd Hirsch thing. I mean, he was good in that scene, but one of the 5 best of the year? I don’t know
Dan Murrell Thanks Much!
Great predictions
14:15 wow, a lot of people would say the best performance was Kate herself in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Clementine was a force
How long does it usually take you to change the decor for the theme of your vids? It's nice to see it change up
I think it’s sad NOPE doesn’t get more love.
Andrea Riseborough, what a call! I hadn't seen anyone else predict her for best actress.
16:37, I'm only 25 and I love that movie, that movie was the first time in years that I was sitting in a theater being mesmerized by a performance I was seeing on screen(Austin's performance)
I really hope Ralph Fiennes gets nominated for The Menu. Great movie and the cheeseburger scene is a masterclass of storytelling
I do to! He won’t, but hopefully in coming years the oscars will nominate more horror
Props to Dan for being one of the very few Americans I’ve heard that pronounced Barry Keohan’s name properly!👍
It took a while to figure it out - sadly, it seems like he and Gerard Butler have just given up on people properly pronouncing their names and are just rolling with our butchered pronunciation.
You left out Triangle of Sadness as one of the possible Best Picture nominees.
