Andrew Scott remains the most shocking omission as every single one of those nominations for All Of Us Strangers are brilliant yet they don't nominate the performance that holds the movie together in lead?! Really odd there. Lily Gladstone was an incredibly shocking omission that should have been there, ditto with Greta Lee.

I think the BAFTAs mostly got it right; i.e. Barbie is a box office hit, yes - but best film of 2023? Definitely not. No nomination for Leonardo di Caprio (generally a very overrated actor in my opinion) - I applaud it (on the merit of the acting there are better performances than his) And I kind of agree with leaving Lily Gladstone out as well. She's good, but the other nominees are simply more deserving in my opinion. There's been far too much hype around her and BAFTA was simply not swayed by it!

Baftas were originally a poor version of Oscars, favoured British born stars and productions and had little resemblance to Oscar winners list. Few overseas stars bothered showing up.They clearly wanted more stars showing up and more relevance, but by making some odd choices, they also want to be different. Omitting Lily and Marty is one way to do that, including Sandra is good but there's always an oddball that no one knows about.
Oscars still feel old school and tied to industry elites.
Neither are ideal in my view

    • @ting6633

that's what I was thinking too, like they wanted to legitimize themselves as an institution so more hollywood stars would get nominated and turn up at their award shows, but as time passes people starting treating the baftas as a mere precursor to the oscars so to reestablish themselves as their own organization, they started going against the grain in recent years (all the best actress oscar winners in the past 3-4 years did not win baftas)

Was disappointed that George Mackay didn't make it through to the Best Actor final five; his performance in Femme was electric. Very pleased to see The Holdovers represented well, Giammati surely is the favourite to win. Da'Vine Joy Randolph should also nail it for Best Supporting Actress, and Huller, for Anatomy,. Supporting actor is the most difficult but for the Baftas I suspect it'll go to Mescal.

Here are my initial thoughts on Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Actress, Director, and Picture. When it comes to Best Actor, I’m predicting Cillian Murphy will win here. I would not however rule out the possibility of Paul Giamatti winning here after he took home Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards. Leonardo DiCaprio missing SAG and now BAFTA is not a good sign for him. Because of this, I’m now starting to think that there is a fifty-fifty chance Leo could end up being left out on Oscar nomination morning.
When it comes to Best Actress, I am APPALLED with BAFTAS decision to leave Lily Gladstone out of the conversation. It’s now obvious to me that Emma Stone is gonna win here.
As far as Best Supporting Actor goes, I truly believe it’s another win for Robert Downey Jr. Although, I am very pleased to see Dominic Sessa get a nomination here. Dominic Sessa would better chance of getting a Best Supporting Actor nomination over Charles Melton because it’s clear to me that BAFTA did not like May December. Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo missing SAG and BAFTA is not good. Granted, Dafoe did get in at SAG.
Best Supporting Actress is more than likely going to be given to Da’Vine Joy Randolph. However, I would not rule out either Emily Blunt or Rosamund Pike making a surprising upset.
Best Director is going to Christopher Nolan because I truly believe that this is his year. Gerwig missing in Best Director is no surprise to me. However, Yorgos Lathamos and Martin Scorsese missing was shocking.
When it comes to Best Picture, I think it’s gonna go to either Oppenheimer or The Holdovers.

Some serious omissions here in the BAFTA nominations but I definitely applaud them (for the most part) for the route they took. Things where getting a bit too predictable which takes the fun out of the awards circuit so I am glad they shook it up a bit to be honest. The one change I would make is replacing Margot Robbie with Lily Gladstone. BAFTA is London-based. So, I cannot see the Best Actor award going to anyone except Cillian Murphy. It would be one thing if the tide wasn't in his favour, but it clearly is with his win at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice etc. And I can't see the BAFTAs going against the tide if the tide is in favour of a British or Irish actor. Likewise, we cannot ignore geography, history etc. when it comes to Emma Gladstone. I love her... She seems so lovely and was brilliant in Killers of the Flower Moon, but I honestly don't believe she should be in the lead actress category. And the Globes etc., being American award shows, play a role in her current sweep of the awards. I’m having major Sundance FOMO right now. Have fun. The BAFTAS are always the outlier and they are really shaking things up. I think Anatomy of the Fall is going to do real well at the BAFTAS, which will really shake things up. I’m watching the film today so my opinion might change. I love that there are so many competitive races this year. The only for certain category I think will be Christopher Nolan for Best Director.

    ه Bafta🎭 sooooo british
    Fanatic 🤔
Bafta award choose british film all the time.
Bafta mambers have loyality to (british film and actross and actor)
All the time...in nomnation and in wining.
Amrican awards they give the awards to the best as can as possible.
Clear some time ignor british film but in bafta they have too much loyality to their art work..and to uorpian work.
Rasist in some way against amrican film.
    They chooce in all category:
Britsh and uorpian even if this works good:
Sultburn.all strangers of us..the zone of intrest..the anatomy of all..poor thing.
Even if the bsfta pretend by diversity...the make choice fairly and without pias.
    Domnic sessa 😍😍😍👏👏
    Amazing choice.
    He the best.
    Amrican awatds ignor him.
He take just one in critics.
    For young actor.
He good to supporting actor category.
    I hope he win❤
    The holdovers
Amazing take screenplay and diroction 👏👏♥
    Alxander payne waaas amazing.
He soooo desearve to win too.
    Lilly gladston snubbed 😲
If they feel she make short film why they dont let her get best supporting actross.
Some peaple said she supporting...but this not right excuse to snubbe her.
She was good to be in cermony..at least as a supporting actross.
This not wrong of lilly gladston.
The awards mamber they put her in leading.
And make her lose leading wining..or losing wining.
    Maystroo
    Are they realy think ?
    Good screenplay 🤔
    The worst screenplay.
Maystroo and color purple the worst screenplay.
Are they realy snubbed lilly gladstone
For vivian opraha just becase she british actross.
And put carry mouligan.. she talk in film about stupid things...instead lilly gladston.
And realy put famtisia burini in place of lilly gladstone.
Are they joke...fantisia and vivian better than lilly.😨
The color purple was disasstar film👎✖👎
No sequnce of events in it🤔
    Strangers of all us🤔😨
    Gay romance film.
    Why they give them nom.
They make reapeted story of love story.
    And get diroction😂😨
This film make same if use phone camira.
Realy they thing this better naplion diroction as example.

I love your opinions and general knowledge and insight on movies both new and classic films. Just one request. When you are talking about the nominations of different bodies in this great awards season, could you leave the graphic on the screen while you talk about the nominees please? My attention span as I get older is getting worse! I have to keep rewinding.
What a great year it’s been for film. Being in London and not getting these films at the same time as US releases I’m counting current films as 2023. This week I’m going to see The Holdovers and All of us Strangers this week and The Zone of Interest on Feb 4th. No sign of The Colour Purple in UK cinemas yet!
Fave films so far - Poor Things and Oppenheimer.

I'm a fan of Saltburn and expected it to do well at BAFTA since it's a British movie and it's deserved. Being British it's not surprising that Orarah got in over Gladstone. Minority opinion here in that I Gladstone is very over rated for her performance.

Some of the omissions are possibly because of the weird nomination process of the BAFTAs. 2-3 are a popular choice and the rest are chosen by a special jury. Wouldn’t surprise me if they have a British bias on the jury.

The data shows the BAFTAs lean more toward British actors than American. I just did a quick study of the Best Actor noms/wins since 2000.
      BAFTA noms = 52% American, 38% British, 10% other.
      OSCAR noms = 66% American, 25% British, 9% other.

My theory for Killers of the Flower Moon having a poor showing: BAFTA awards looking at an American historical epic. It’s not showy or flashy like other American epics were in the past, it’s a grittier and might have been less appealing to British voters the way that Saltburn or All of Us Strangers were. That could have carried over to Gladstone.

    • @marrmart7690

@@myytchanneldinakoha8498 Perhaps “poor showing” was a bad way to say it (I didn’t read the full list of what else it was up for), but the scathing reality of Killers probably has more relevance to America than it does Britain. But then again, the omission of Yorgos was what REALLY surprised me as it’s such a visual movie whose vision comes across because of the director’s distinctive style.
Which could also explain Gladstone’s omission.

Sandra Huller was excellent in AOAF. I hope that if she gets a double nomination at the Oscars it's because she's a legitimate contender in both categories and not just a consolation prize for losing Best Actress which is where she has the strongest chance to win.
I think Margot Robbie got in because of pure votes. (I'm not sure the jury would have saved her). I suspect the other vote getters were Sandra and Emma. If all of this is true it means that Gladstone wasn't even saved by the jury.
I'm not sure which is worse, not entering because of lack of votes or not being saved by the jury... in a field of 6!!

I’m happy that The Holdovers is getting a lot more appreciation as award season goes on BUT wow some crazy omissions amongst the big categories. BAFTA has gone crazy. Far too much love for Saltburn which is decently acted but it’s not THAT good (but I guess it being a British movie it was to be expected) and no Lily Gladstone or Andrew Scott (in a movie that gets a nod for best casting but they don’t nominate the best performance in the movie, like what!) and no Mark Ruffalo! I do not understand KOTFM in best film without Scorsese or Gladstone or screenplay. I don’t understand the Jacob Elordi nomination for Saltburn, especially without Saltburn in any of the big categories outside of acting. Also to snub Ruffalo and Lathimos but still give Poor Things best film? Like this was truly truly wild.
