  • The ASICS Superblast is a rule breaking shoe with thick doses FF Turbo and FF Blast + and nothing else. No plate, no shank, no gel, no nothing. Just ASICS’ two best foams in a long run racer-trainer. Also, there’s AHAR+.

Just finished my first short run in the Superblast. So far so good! One key advantage over Nike is that the Superblast has a removable insole and my Protalus M100 orthotics fit nicely inside. I have been a Nike runner for years but lately have moved away because so many of their lightweight road shoes have the insole glued in, and in my old age I need an orthotic for a sensitive heel.

Try doing low heat with a heat gun or hair dryer for a minute or so to remove an insole that's been stepped and walked in. It should losen the glue for you to remove.

Looks like a fun shoe and I agree with your assessment with where it might fight into someone's rotation. Personally, if you already have the Novablast 2 or 3 then that seems to do the trick for long runs, plus I think the Novablast is a pretty versatile shoe as well. Considering the Superblast is $80 more than the Novablast, for me it's a no-brainer to stick with the Novablast. Thanks for this video, Mike. It was very informative. Top notch as always!
btw - I don't think I'll be able to make it to your shake-out run in NY on Saturday, my wife and I will be at the expo picking up her race bib and packet at that time. I hope to see you again out on the course or perhaps after the race. Good luck this weekend!

An interesting if slightly puzzling shoe to me. It kind of looks like a beefed up Novablast 3 and yet the price has been beefed up massively as well. Are we just going to be paying nearly double for a bit of foam from the Metaspeed Sky+ & Edge+ or maybe the price hike is almost to keep the justification for the price of those racing shoes. Or are we actually paying more for a "better" shoe full stop. I note you mentioned you seem to go for your normal size and yet the Novablast 3 typically runs long for many runners including me. Is this a similar fit to them? Am also thinking the original Sky was the complete reverse and ran rather short so if it is blending both sizing seems a bit hard to be sure.

I have been a subscribed follower for 4-5 years, and really enjoy your honest perspectives, reviews and vlogs. I also appreciate your emphasis on disclosing “where” the reviewed gear comes from, as well as potential bias, like in this case with Asics.
When it comes to Nike, I’ve been missing your reviews of the new staples other then Pegasus 39 and Vomero 16, particularly the new Alphafly, Pegasus Turbo, Zoom Fly and Invincible, all of which you previously have reviewed. Is there any reason for that?

A lot of people have already reviewed those shoes, and sometimes we want a new review to come out saying something different when maybe there’s nothing to add. I’ve noticed that too, but on the bright side there are some great reviews here of shoes that other people have just lightly brushed over, and I say lightly brushed over because they haven’t really given them an honest try before writing the review. 25-30 miles isn’t great testing and even for someone who has put a lot of shoes on their feet. There’s nothing special about reviewing shoes that seem to be meh and don’t have a foreseeable upside just because of brand loyalty and I’d rather see a shoe model recognized over a shoe line or a brand, as they have changed so much recently.

Some thoughts since there are inevitably numerous comments about price in the comment columns of the reviews of this shoe: This shoe would not be for me-I’ll stick with the NovaBlast3. But first of all, why should the inclusion of a plate or not be necessarily linked to price anymore? Are plates really significant in cost or are we being manipulated because of the past novelty of it which isn’t really a novelty anymore? The point is whether a shoe works great for you and its use case, or not. Regardless, this one is indeed very pricey, but my next point: I recommend everyone who lives where there’s an independent running store (not part of a chain) with a run club look into whether they offer discounts. I have a favorite store in a city we visit several times a year and if I pay cash I not only get their club discount (as a regular and frequent customer over the years) but an additional one. If you get the get to know the owners & staff of such a store, you’re not only supporting brick and mortar indie business, but you get the try on and test the shoe first, and they might also even order it for you in the colorway of your choice. The more expensive the shoe, the more significant the discount as it’s a %. I’m sure not all stores can do this but I bet plenty do. They may also return the shoe for you even after wearing it if it doesn’t work for you.

It is an exciting shoe in that it's bridging the gap between max cushion longrun/recovery shoes that are heavier and intended for slower paces and the faster race/workout shoes - an interesting market. I'd personally lean towards just having two different shoes (which would be the same price as these 😂). The cost is just crazy though. A daily trainer reaching the monetary levels of marathon super shoes is ridiculous and a concerning precedent to set.

Sounds to me it's gonna be rather similar to the NB3, with a firmer feel. But gotta try it on in the stores first of course. All these foams, both the Turbo and Plus, are PEBA based. Of course so are many other shoes, so.... Unfortunately the real test would not only be to try these on in the stores and even running in the them there (best if there is a treadmill lol), sadly that is easier said than done. AHAR+ in the SB is cool, luckily the NB3 has TR version with approx double the AHAR thickness + slightly improved wet traction, which i have tested out before on wet outdoor tiles with dull surfaces no less (asphalt is totally no issue). Probably aimed @ those with the budget and/or elites/pros, the naunces and differences might be very small for the normies. That said, good for ASICS for pushing out products like this, next Xmas season might get a pair on discount! lol

I like the Novablast 3, but not everyday as too much squish over time seems to causes issues with body mechanics (for me personally anyway. ) even more stack sounds awesome at first but I’m noticing the higher I go in stack height, the more odd issues I suddenly develop. Granted shoes will affect runners differently, but I found that do much better overall the closer I stay to a natural lower stack and offset. That being said I think these super blast are getting totally ridiculous, but a home run for the marketing team as I’m sure sooner or later I’ll break down and try a pair… just because…

Followup on my Superblast experience=not good:( I am 66 years old, 6ft 2inches and 195 lbs. Big old runner. Was doing an easy run in these shoes, 2nd run with them, and at about 3.5 miles my left hamstring had a strain and I had to walk home. Took a week off and did a 3.7 mile easy run in my regular Hoka Tecton X shoes and no problems. Tried the Superblast again today and had the hamstring strain again. So these shoes basically injure me. A shame because I love the fit and they feel great. I think they are letting my heel drop too far with each stride because the foam is too soft for my weight. I am not dissing the shoe. Wonderful shoe but did not work for me in a big way. I have not had any hamstring issues in probably 30 years and these days I still try and do 3x400 at 5:40ish pace and never any problems, so it is definitely the shoes.
