Great humor, good info. I have 3 doxies, and this is a constant battle. Vet tech showed me how to express it one time, and I have decided I will always pay the money to have it done at the vet clinic.
THANK YOU. i’m a longtime petsitter with no official training worried about a dog’s anal gland treatment at the moment and videos from veterinarians have been so comprehensive and definitely saved me from messing up with a lot of clients’ pets. it’s a lifesaver and i don’t have to harass my clients or their vets after hours. keep being awesome yall
Six months ago, my 9 year old papillon dog developed a/g infection over the weekend. I didn’t notice scooting but she seem to not sit comfortably. Once I investigated the problem and parted her long hair, saw the swollen area. At the ER visit, vet used a needle on the right gland and drained it then sent her home with antibiotic. The needle hole drained until I could see my vet the following week. Since that time I’ve had to take her weekly or monthly to my vet because her right gland now gets thick. After a $400.00 ER visit and watching her suffer, I’ve been more proactive in checking her butt. Thanks for explaining and hope other pet owners will learn from your wisdom and my experience.
My cockapoo let me internally express her glands since I got her as a puppy. He’s 3 now. It takes me about one minute to express both glands. It’s the color of dulce de leche and the texture and thickness of a warmed up Starburst.
Disgusting. Cheers and thanks, my Cavapoo is scooting so thanks for the heads up Update. My girlfriend came to watch me to see the process. DO NOT STAND DOWN RANGE. I repositioned myself so she could see better and it got on my cheek.
Well if that's the consistency of a starburst we're all in trouble I think you ment Starbucks or something else close to chocolate... Maybe I missed something too..
Hi, do you still smell the fishy smell if the glands are fine? My dog isn't scooting or biting his rear but once in a while I smell it on him. He is small and I'm feeding him pumpkin puree.
about your question i think small dog are the most , doctor could you please make a video about corneal sequestrum i would love to know what it is and how to differentiate between it and other eye disease and thank you so much for your videos
Thank the dear lord my dog doesn't have this issue. She's 100lbs, never farts, never even licks herself in weird parts. She's an angel and somehow some loser decided to abandon her. Oh well--my luck!
My Corgi is fishy smelling. I know it's the glands. I usually have the groomer do it. But he seems to need it more often than that. I was hoping for a demo of how to do it safely at home. Thanks for the video and your humor adds to it. This is stressing me and my buddy out.
My dog is the dog most likely to have this issue, because she is small. She needs internal expression. Fortunately, I can afford it for her. Poor baby❤️
Wouldn't you say the anal glands are also a way for dogs to identify each other, identify their puppies, moreso than the things you suggested? Just curious.
hi! love your channel! question- do does age have any factor with this? What about constipation? my frenchie is about 14 mos old but she has been doing the scooting thing only once in a while but for a longgg time now. she also started doing what i call chasing her imaginary tail cuz thats how it looks. shes been going into episodes of looking uncomfortable, pacing while sometimes squat-walking and at times she goes outside and it seems like she cant go. her poop is really hard and drydespite our efforts to help her with that. does sge maybe need this expression done? I also heard once its done for them, you have to continually keep having it done for them, is that true?
Basically a he did not show put on a pair of gloves and properly express. Yes many large dogs will also have this over the last 30 years not a pleasant thing to do, but unfortunately it’s becomes necessary and you know that smell it will need to be done Did I miss where he put gloves on and showed how to properly do this at home procedure?
So youre saying that its technically safer and increases life expectancy to shower in anal gland oil before walking through the forest because it wards off other animals. Thats what I got from watching this video.
You said 4-6 weeks if your dog has problems, how often should you do/have it done if your dog doesn’t have any problems that you noticed? My dog doesn’t have any issues, should I look into having this done? She’s a Bichon Frise..
My dog god his anal gland expressed for the first time in his life, his first bowel moment after there was a little blood in his stool. But other that there’s no pain. Is this normal?
Hi Doctor, My pet is 12 years old Spitz male dog and from past 2 months it is suffering from anal gland infection. Started with a small pimple then went to blood blister kind of thing and then enlarged. Its recurrent now and surgery is suggested. Pls tell me if there will be any risk and will he suffer more
Can dogs scoot their butts like that on occasion when they’re playing? My frenchie started scooting her butt about 1-2 times only when she plays though. Not sure if this is her marking her territory (toys) or if she has an anal gland issue.
My dog just had a anal gland rupture. It bled a lot. The emergency vet opened it and drained it & gave her antibiotics and pain meds to the tune of $1600.
OK this is so weird because at four minutes and five seconds you said that is mostly happens with smaller dog breeds, and I’ve always had smaller dogs. To shih tzus that lasted 16 years. (Rip Snickers and Missy) 🥹 but they never ever 🙌🏼had this problem! Well we recently rescued a 1 year old Aussie doodle 🐩 and he’s doing the booty scoot a lil bit😂🤢🤮 and I’ve never experienced this anal gland thing owning a dog before 😬😫GROSSSA!! I already have to clean 🧽 🧼 everyone else in my houses shit 💩My six year old sons, plus grown adults that seem to be shatting and blowing up the toilet 🚽 pissing in every vicinity of the toilet except the actual bowl 5 seconds after I clean it, just like a cat does I swear!!😳😤🫠 Speaking of cats I’m also the only one who keeps up with the litter box for our 🐈🙄 I can do pimples & tonsil stones, I can watch the most gruesome horror films, but THIS??? Nahhh😂😂😂😂😂NOPE ✋
I am so interested in your video, could not help falling in love with the adorable dogs.I wanna invite you to promote my products ,these dog products are free to send . May I have the honor to have you do a collaboration together!
I use the anal gland fluid as a sauce for hot dogs, hamburger, ramen noodles, stuff like that. It's pretty pungent on it's own, but if you gingerly put it on your favorite food, it tastes good.

Great choice 😂
Take care of your dog !! Nothing wrong with doing it yourself. Why are u choosing vet? Are u not able to do it ?
@@DavePryor302he’s just saying that cause it’s disgusting
@@leomessi_tps4683 it’s not even disgusting. It’s basic hygiene
@@DavePryor302
And there’s also nothing wrong with letting your vet do it either. They literally ARE taking care of their dog.

Have a papillon too. He is doing same thing your dog is. I will get him checked. Thanks
Was that the cat throwing it’s toy up in the air at 0:55? 😂 so adorable
I thought I was the only one who noticed that 😂
ANSWER: Small dogs
I learned this at my vet. My husband and I have a Shih tzu and she usually needs it about every four to six weeks.
Thanks for putting Ginger down off of the table; I was so nervous about her jumping or falling!
😂ahhh the butt drag Dr was awesome

Very important! very common! Thanks my Flattie never had problem with that, as the breed needs to walk a lot!
Very true, glad you don't have to deal with it!
Small docs how do you show most. My question is if it ruptures do I still need to check to see if they need more to be released?

Instant sub! Great vid!
Thank you so much for the feedback and for the sub! We greatly appreciate it :)
My blue heeler keeps having issues... I have been trying to do it myself and I cannot figure it out... she is getting expensive to keep..😞
think you shouldve just included the info on ruptured anal glands included in the video to be more informative.
Thanks for the feedback

Try adding Bran Flakes cereal to her food it will help

What can I add to my fur babies diet to stay away from the problem
My vet told me pumpkin puree. It doesn't prevent it entirely but it prolongs between visits
So youre saying that its technically safer and increases life expectancy to shower in anal gland oil before walking through the forest because it wards off other animals. Thats what I got from watching this video.
Do you have any comments or videos of having them removed to hardening like in golden retrievers

I have to take my beagle, which is a house dog about every 2 weeks.

Could be the anal glands or potentially an issue with a tail pocket
Cats get this too...mine has it.

Small you said
Is there a way I can express the gland...what I'm asking will a warm compress help express the anal glands
What do you do if the glad ruptures?
My dog just had a anal gland rupture. It bled a lot. The emergency vet opened it and drained it & gave her antibiotics and pain meds to the tune of $1600.
Small dogs. Isn't there something you can feed then to help the glands
Not anything for sure. One product would be gland ease from veterinary recommended solutions
What is a rapture glands??
IT'S THE SMALL DOGS THAT HAVE THE MOST ISSUES!
That's what she said
How much is the cost
Varies from place to place.
This may be a really dumb question.... But do cat's have anal glands like dogs do?? And if so do they need them cleaned and such too??
Yes cats do have anal glands as well. I don't think that cat need their glands expressed anywhere near as much as dogs do.
Is there an age at which to start doing the procedure? My pup is 5 and a half months old and he seems to have an irritated butt

What does it mean if a dog’s anal glands come out in a greenish color?
Nothing. The only thing that we have determined to be abnormal with anal glands is if there is blood present
Hey doc, this was useless because ALL u did was bunch of talking and u didn't really show us anything boohooooo 😔 😕 😔
Thank you for the informative video!
