My dog had his glands removed 4 days ago. We tried everything but he was having gland problems every 3 to 5 days.
It’s a very delicate and painful surgery. If someone can’t stay with your dog the firsts days after the procedure don’t do it until someone can. Trust me.

Love your videos. Would love to play some of them in our waiting room. Sometimes they go just a little bit too far to be able to share them with our clients (in this one, "I didn't know it was that kind of show" might not go over so well). But when they're PG, we love highlighting your show.

Wanted to share my experience for those looking for advice/information. I have a 9 lb chuhuahu/ schnauzer mix & we have anal sac problems. I'm 38 & have never heard of this. The first time I noticed swelling by her butt hole & honestly thought it was a spider bite. It got red, big, and ruptured. I took her to the vet & they had to saline rinse both sides & she got antibiotics. Remember if your dog licks an abscess & licks you they are spreading bacteria. So... 1 month later her other side got clogged but I caught it before it reuptured. She got a saline flush again. A year later both sides clogged. The emergency vet only expressed & then I had to take her to the vet. $$$ The stuff that came out was as thick as poo & it should be as thin as syrup. My vet & I have discussed removal but an adverse side effect can & is often bowl control & your dog won't be able to hold it anymore. My next step is to do regular expression but I haven't figured out how & haven't decided if I want to pay a groomer or vet. I have also tried pumpkin & yogurt but really didn't notice a difference. My dog also does not get table scraps, just dog food. There's no cause.

Genetics my friend. I have two dachshunds and they are brothers from the same litter. As a matter of fact they were a litter of 2. One has butt problems the other does not. They eat the same food and share the same space so i assume it is caused by genetics

My new puppy has been to the vet twice and needs to go again... every 2-3 weeks. Her stool is firm. My vet just said bring her in whenever she needs it. There has to be a better way. She said no surgery for at least a year as she might grow out of it. I am not a diy'er either.😳

@Cone of Shame Hi, thanks for the info! I have a question - I just tried expressing my dogs glands for the first time. He's been scooting for a few weeks but it started right after a vet had happened to shave his behind so I initially thought he was itchy from the hair growing back. I noticed that in video demonstrations the substance usually came out as a liquid, sometimes squirting. When I expressed my baby's bottom, if was more of a thin toothpaste consistency. Is this normal, or does it mean his glands infected? Thanks for any advice you can give!

We had to have our male Aussie's glands expressed approximately every 6 weeks or so, and you could tell when it was needed because they SMELL badly enough that it seemed like HE stunk. But once we completely cut out ANY AND ALL table scraps, which we were already CAREFUL about, he never had to have it done again! No other dog we have had has ever had anal gland issues.

My Pappillion had an abscess that was not detectable but burst through the skin. I watched the videos and allowed my dog to also watch the videos. I expressed the gland and washed the area thoroughly with Dawn then applied Neosporin. I noted that the swelling, on the left side, where the impaction had burst through the skin, was significantly less. I will express the right gland tomorrow......One was enough and a bit overwhelming. My question is what happens now? I can not go to a Vet. So now what? Also it bled out some. I used an Absorbent pad to contain any leakage. He seemed to understand that I was doing my best to relieve him of his discomfort. He immediately went to sleep afterwards. What should I do or expect now. Please advise me.

Very surprised at your 'stay away as much as you can from expressing anal glands attitude'. Small breeds, especially, can become impacted and infected. Our Vet feels it should be done monthly and taught us (after one of our small dogs became infected because of our not knowing). Vet said we could bring in for free expressing every month since it can be a painful and dangerous situation in dogs that have problems and need a bit of help. Small dogs seem more prone and every groomer that I'm aware of includes it with a groom.

I have kept dogs for over 50 yrs. Never had to "Express" Anal glands.
The trick is to add fibre to the diet. Steamed ir boiled Pumpkins, Cabbage, carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower and Coconut meat help.
Soft poop is the biggest culprit

I would ask my vet! If he wasnt so damn expensive! $300 bucks just for the visit, minus the medications that they give. And because he's so damn expensive, we only see the vet once a year for my Dogs vaccines.

I expressed my dogs anal glands for the first time a couple of weeks ago because she was smelling horrible, and she's a service dog so thats not ok or allowed, you can actually be denied public access because of it. Anyway when I expressed them they squirted all over me and I wasn't pressing hard or anything it was basically as soon as I touched the area with any pressure. They smell went away for a little while but now it's back, anyone have any suggestions on how to help keep it under control because id rather her be able to express them naturally.

My 7 yr old standard poodle has been paying extreme attention to her derrière …she developed a hotspot from licking … coned her up to stop the licking licking and treated the hot spot … noticed she had a slight but skunky discharge and the first thing I thought was the anal gland… I have had dogs my whole life … 45 yrs of personal ownership and have never had to express the anal glands ever … well today when i looked at her butt she had one puffed up side so I did the squeeze her derrière (around her anus) and yucky muck came out ,,, washed her up and she is fine… no more cone and interest in her butt .. after the fact looked at this video and others on you-tube … subscribed to this vet’s channel …will be increasing fibre content and hope I do not have to repeat the procedure ever but not adverse to doing so…if it means preserving her butt health and my sanity
