It'd be really interesting to know what most manga would have been without an editor. I wonder which ones would have been better and which would have been worse.

Oh gosh, I wish we could get some of that information. That sounds SO incredibly interesting.

You should check out the One Piece "Road to 1000" series. Basically a small book detailing all the many ideas, changes and experiences that led to One Pieces most important changes throughout the decades.
Like, one of the most important characters and the center piece to a whole saga was created over a random weekend because of an Editors idea that the MCs needed more rivals.

I remember when Shanks lost his arm in One Piece which doesn't make sense cause of how strong he is. But apparently it's because the editor was the one who told the author to do that in order to make it feel more dramatic, but that also made it less sense because of it.
I remember Dragon Ball editor was the one that told the author to add a new villain after Dr.Gero cause editor thought he wasn't good enough which resulted in 17 and 18, same thing with Cell new form cause editor thought he looked too ugly.
Dragon Ball one was for the better, but not everything is for the better if it will end up ruining the future plan like Shanks in One Piece. Dragon Ball didn't had that problem cause that's just that one arc. So it is a shame that the author are forced to do them. Feedback are nice, but forced is a different story. Lol XD

Very interesting video. Though, I still feel like I have a light understanding of how involved editors are in my manga and or manhwa, I do truly understand that the purpose of an editor is to push your project towards publication perfection.

I see, I think I have the basic gist between the two. I think the confusion for me personally comes from not working with an editor, and have someone review my stories😅

Would it be possible for a self-published author to find a manga editor somewhere?

I think people shouldn't hate Isayama for writing a bad ending of AOT. Editors are also equally responsible in making the ending of AOT less good

Do editors for serialized works (ongoing stories) take reader feedback into account with this editing? Or is that negotiated between Author and Editor?

Probably. BNHA, for example, is pretty well-known for giving characters who win popularity poles more involvement in the manga whenever it can.
