Islam predates the Geneva Convention on wartime conduct.
In the pre-Islamic days, slaves were commercial goods, and slavery was an established system. It was a source of sustenance for thousands. To the aristocracy, the number of slaves was a symbol of status.
Islam could have used force to fight slavery but without doubt this would have caused animosity. Islamic strategy focused on changing the stand of the community, so slaves after liberation would become its ordinary members, without any kind of demonstrations or strikes.
Islam waged a war against slavery in which neither sword was resorted to, nor was blood spilled.
Before Islam, slavery was without restrictions. Those who could not repay debts became slaves; war captives were either killed or enslaved. Slaves were hunted like animals, killed or captured.
Islam forbade its followers to enslave people in any case. The only exception was an idolatrous enemy captured in war fought either in self-defense or with the permission of Prophet Muhammad or one of his companions.
Before Islam, the invader could do with his enemy whatever he liked. He could put the arrested soldiers to death, enslave them or keep them under his authority, and the ruler could enslave, depending on his own desire, anyone under his control. The father had absolute authority over his progeny, he could sell or gift them away; loan them to someone else, or exchange them with another’s son or daughter.
Islam dried up this system. No ruler was allowed to treat his offspring as his slaves. Every individual was bestowed with well-defined rights; the ruler and the ruled, the progenitor and the offspring had to live within the limits prescribed by religion; no one could transgress those limits.
Enslavement in Islam was only allowed in a defensive war against unbelieving enemy who launched a war against Muslims. At the same time, Islam raised the status of a slave to that of a free man; and opened many ways for the emancipation of slaves.
Islam commands Muslims to show mercy to those combatants who surrender.
And if one of the disbelievers surrenders and pleads mercy, then show mercy so that they can hear the words of God, and then allow him to go back to his place of safety. (At-Tawbah 9:5)
Earlier, slave trade was started by the West (the starting of the colonization), wars were the main source of slaves. Islam did not permit wars of aggression. All the battles fought during the life-time of Prophet Muhammad were defensive battles.
…..to let the captives go free, either with or without any ransom. (Muhammad 47:4)
After that Islam started an active operation to liberate the slaves, making the liberation of slaves a way of expiation for many sins. If a man failed to fast without any excuse during the month of Ramadan for example, he had to free a slave for each day. In addition a slave had to be freed for every breach of vows, an accidental homicide, for unintentionally killing a Muslim and for many other transgressions.
Islam’s objective was to create a society free from this system. Therefore, any slave woman who gives birth to a child by her master could not be sold and after her master’s death, she becomes a free woman. Unlike all previous customs, Islam ordained that the child born to a slave woman by her master should follow the status of the father.
Slaves were given a right to redeem themselves either on payment of an agreed sum or on fulfillment of service for an concurrent period.
…, and those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of God which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, God is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful. (An-Nur 24:33)
When a slave wants to get a mutual written contract, the master should accept it. Muslims had to help the slaves achieve liberty.
Islam also ordains that slaves seeking freedom should be helped from the public treasury. Prophet Muhammad and his companions provided ransom for the slaves out of state coffers.
The Quran recognizes the liberation of slaves as one of the permissible expenditures of alms and charity. When a slave wants freedom, the master has to agree and has to help the slave from his own wealth. Slaves should live a respectable life after earning their freedom.
Therefore, despite a culture based on slavery, Islam laid down the path and legislated the most effective way to end this practice.

The Prophet 'aleyhi saalat wa Salaam had a servant named Anas ibn Malik may Allaah be pleased with him. He narrated that during the ten years that he served him, the Prophet never told him why did you do this? About what he did or, why did you not do that? About what he had not done. This show us just one exemple of the noble behaviours of the Messenger of Allaah peace upon him.

How pathetic and disgusting to change the word slave to servant, how slimey and how shady is that.
You Muslims change a word which the same as fabricating a lie. A servant in today's definition is someone you pay a salary to, a slave is someone you give food and a house to and their labor is free. So changing that word shows what kind of a disingenuous snake you are.
Instead of saying slavery was wrong and muhammad did not abolish it in his area of rule he partook in the barbaric act you do mental gymnastics and say that he treated his slaves nicely.
Imagine the outrage if white Europeans argued that they didn't have slaves and they had servants and they were justified because they treated them nicely.
The same pathetic mental gymnastics is done by Muslims to justify muhammad sleeping withba 6 year old child.
Shame on you Muslims who think this is right

Slavery in the Islamic system is beautiful, I would have much preffered to be a slave/servant during the time of the pious Muslims rather than nowadays where you are a slave to capitalism.
Slaves/servants also became kings in Islamic societies, such as the Mamlukes, they were slaves/servants who later took advantage of the weakness of the Ayyubid monarchy and seized power, and due to the hadith of the Prophet S.A.W.S saying you should obey the ruler even if he was a slave/servant, nobody objected to them being rulers. They later defeated the Mongols and kicked the crusaders out of the Middle East and thrived for centuries before the Ottomans conquering Egypt, and they still thrived but mainly in Egypt as a social class. Later the Mamlukes due to their influence and power, were massacred in the 18th-19th century after Egypt was trying to modernize under Muhammad Ali Pasha.
Some of my favourite ahadith about the treatment of slaves/servants:
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever strikes his slave-boy sharply without right, or punches him, the expiation for the sin is to emancipate him.”
    Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1657
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim
Suwayd ibn Muqarrin reported: He had a slave girl and someone slapped her, so he said to him, “Did you not know that it is forbidden to strike the face? I was the seventh of my brothers during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessing be upon him, and we had only one servant. One of us became enraged and slapped him, so the Prophet commanded us to set him free.”
    Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1658
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim
Al-Ma’rur ibn Suwayd reported: I met Abu Dharr while he was wearing the same clothes as his servant boy. I asked him about it and he said, “I once abused a man and insulted his mother, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, ‘O Abu Dharr, you insulted him by his mother? You are a man with ignorance in you. They are your brothers and your assistants. Allah has placed them in your hands. Whoever has his brother in his custody, let him feed him with the same food he eats and clothe him with the same clothes he wears. Do not assign them a task they cannot do; if you do so, then help them.”
    Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 30, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1661
Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not refer to anyone as ‘my slave,’ for all of you are the slaves of Allah. Rather, you should refer to him as ‘my young man.’ The servant should not refer to anyone as ‘my lord,’ but rather he should refer to him as ‘my master.’”
    Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2414, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2249
Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim
Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined good treatment of slaves and he would say, “Feed them from the same food you eat, clothe them from the same clothes you wear, and do not torture the creation of Allah Almighty.”
    Source: al-Adab al-Mufrad 188
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani
Anas ibn Malik reported: I served the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for ten years. By Allah, he never even said to me, “Uff!” He never said harshly for anything, “Why did you do that?” or, “Why did you not do that?”
    Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5691, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2309

Never should a Believer kill a Believer; but (if it so happens) by mistake, (compensation is due): if one (so) kills a Believer, it is ordained that he should free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the deceased's family . . . For those who find this beyond their means, (is prescribed) a fast for two months running: by way of repentance to Allah. (4:92)
Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons . . . or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. (5:89)
Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); . . . for those in bondage and in debt . . . (9:60)
But for those who divorce their wives . . . then wish to go back on the words they uttered, - (it is ordained that such a one) should free a slave before they touch each other: this you are admonished to perform . . . And if any has not (the wherewithal), he should fast for two months consecutively before they touch each other. But if any is unable to do so, he should feed sixty indigent ones. (58:3-4)
Verily We have created Man into toil and struggle. . . . And what will explain to you the path that is steep? - (It is:) freeing the bondman . . . (90:4-13)

@Orla jekins that verse is talking about defending yourself if a believer acts unjustly towards a believer, and fights him then you can defend yourself untill the brother acts according to Allahs commands, because a believer is forbidden to fight a believer, but if a one believer chooses to go against Allahs commands then the believer who is being attacked can defend himself untill the other believer obeys Allah's commands
So if someone was fighting you you wouldn't defend yourself???
That's wise to me, what's the problem???

Here is a typical example of a scholar who was the descendant of a FREED ROMAN SLAVE.
He was praised by Imam Ahmed may have mercy upon him, and is respected by all Salafis , said very clearly that the ARABS WERE BLACK!
Abu Ubaid Al Qaasim Ibn Salaam may Allah have mercy upon him( a scholar respected by all, including all Salafis) gives further clarification in his book Ghareeb Al Hadeeth, Chapter 4 page 388
And his saying Al Hamraa( The reds which means the whites) - It means the non Arabs and the clients (the red slaves and the red people that embraced Islam ) they were named that because the most predominant colours of the Arabs are Al Sumurah and Al Udmah and the most predominant colours of the non Arab is white and red (very white) and this is like the saying of the people : If you wanted to mention mankind then you’d say the reds and the blacks. ''So the reds are all of those that are overwhelmed with whiteness and the blacks are those who are overwhelmed with Al Udmah (blackness) .''
Read more about the reds and blacks here :alajamwalarab.com/i-was-sent-to-the-red-and-the-black/
Read a very good article to know more about this very ancient scholar who 'imam Ahmed' praised here on a well known Salafi webiste: www.troid.ca/aqidah/tawheed/comprehensive-study/100-the-book-of-iman.
White people were rare in that area in that time so the slaves would have mostly have been Arabs and by default, also black.
In Seera A'laam Al Nubalaa Imaam Al Dhahabi , said
“Red, in the dialect of the Arabs means a pale white complexion and it was a colour that was rare amongst them.''

    Salaam Alaykum all.
At that time there was no government and the prophet Muhammad saw said whoever captured the slave had to take responsibility for them and teeat them accordingly until one of the 4 ways of freeing a slave came about. The prophets saw prisoner was kept in the masjid for x amount of days. When he got his freedom he was so taken by Islam that he became a Muslim. Today we have a structured goverment and prisons. But ask tbe prisoner if they would prefer house arrest with his jailer or prson? Take a look today at prisons and how many prisoners convert to Islam and follow it faithfully in tbat environment because it gives them peace, sense of belonging brotherhood and hope. It can be like being on a long itikhaf where the imaan is high untill they come out of prison and like everyone else get affected by society. So even in Islam we can't live like hermits staying in a masjid confied to it generally. Only thoes who maybe extroverts like some scholars who didnt marry and gave themselves to studying and teaching which is ok but not tje norm.
