- Sámi artist Elle Márjá Eira performing in Sami Grand Prix 2009 in Kautokeino, but not as a part of the competition. She is singing/yoiking "Ruoššajievja".
Sami Grand Prix is a part of the Easter Festival in Kautokeino.
The Sámi people:
Sami people, also spelled Sámi, or Saami, are the arctic indigenous people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, but also in the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. The Sámi are Europe's northernmost and the Nordic countries' only officially indigenous people.[6] Sami ancestral lands span an area of approximately 388,350 km2 (150,000 sq. mi), which is approximately the size of Sweden in the Nordic countries. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages and are classified as a branch of the Uralic language family. The Sami languages are endangered.
Keep the Sami culture alive. Don't let it die. We need cultural diversity in this world. If culture dies, so will the guidance & the wisdom of our ancestors. We will be lost, looking for our native roots
Would you be interested to know that the Sami culture is present in a currently produced graphic novel?
@@DjDelchi What graphic novel would that be?
@@alejandromacias3697 it's called " Mina olen noiduttu ", or just "Noiduttu " to the fans. You can find more about it at entropic-designs.com or email me directly.
A.P. Delchi i’m sámi and for sure will be buying this from you soon. love your art style-excited to see the representation & thanks for posting the link!
Sadly large portions are already lost to the history thanks to the cross worshippers forbidding the sami religion and culture. :(
She is from Kautokeino (North of Norway), but lives in Karasjok. This performance was a part of the Sami Music Festival in 2009. The Sami Music Festival is held in Kautokeino every easter.
love it
I'm so grateful this video is still foundation. Thank you so so much for sharing this gem. 💎 ❤
Niels, just wondering if you're impersonating the real artist and stealing? Lots of people where you're from have a history of doing that. They also have a history with the local law enforcement. Prove that you are who you claim to be. I'm in Hokkaido but I can wait.
i encountered sami music in my swedish classes at college. We talked about Mari Boine, who's i guess the most famous Sami singer & when I travelled throughout sweden/norway last year someone on the train to Kiruna showed me Sofia Jannok. I fell in love with sami music, it's very soothing & although I don't understand the lyrics i find it's beautiful. I'll spend 2 month in sweden this winter & hopefully be able to go to the sami land again.
This brought a tear to my eye. Beautiful. I am proud of my people not only in this moment but always.
I love your people and the many vivid ways your culture speaks of the variety of snow from the beginning snowfall to the sprintime melt and the various uses of a stick and their many names the fire poking stick has a name the sticks at he lavvu entrance have a name. So delicate and beautiful. im Kristin (Ristin in Saami)from Washington state
The sound of my ancestors!
The sound of mine, too. My heart definitely is in Sápmi
Wonderful! Keep on playing & singing. That's the best way to show that Sàmi people are still alive...
Wow! Love it love it love it! Sami sounds like "real music" to me, for the very first time. No words needed. Emotion like the sunrise and the birds in the morning... Life in all it's beauty and glory. Gracias!
You should check out a band from Iceland called Sigur Rós; their song Sæglópur is one of my all-time favorites!
Mikeztarp Thanks, will do!
+Catherine Todd the singer doesn't joik, but it's a similar pattern, lovely anyway.
She is awesome! This gave me goosebumps...
May our culture live forever. Our children need to know who they are and it should be passed on to generations who have ventured far from home to places like the US and Canada. Never forget who you are.
too late. After 100 yrs they know nothing about where they come from. The loss of their language is a strong indicator.
They visit geneology sites, because they would otherwise not know who their grandparents used to be.
That is the sorry state of affairs.
Sheer beauty. This touches my soul. Thank you x
so beautiful...feel like the music from heaven
I'm reading The End of Drum Time by Hanna Pylvainen about the Saami. i love yoiks. I yoiked on the Timberline Trail on Mt Hood.

Real Music from the real humans of our home--Earth!
Så otroligt vackert. Hälsningar från södra Sverige. Lyssnar på denna om och om igen på senaste tiden.
Beautiful voice💙
Lovely! We need to take much more care of our native people!
We are all our native people.
I was told, tongue in cheek, that sami's have special powers. I wouldn't put it past them
me either. They communicate with reindeers, that's all I need to know!
@@geoffoakland those "special powers" weren't always seen as good, and so many noaidis were killed for witchcraft
This is my favourite song

Could somebody put out here the lyrics and translation?
Cool a Finnish name for the place :D
It should be beautiful it came from angels fallen ones!
What do you mean, friend?
where is she from and where was this performance?
I think it means "russian light"
Ruoššajievja - what does this mean?
Ruošša means Russia, and jievja means white. The term is used by Saamis to describe a certain-looking reindeer. As you may know the Saamis have about 500 words to describe reindeers. By those discriptive words they immediately knows what reindeer is meant if they see it.
Best wishes,
A Saami
Talked to you awhile ago going to jokkmokk not alta i guess not wanted there by who I sought defeats the purpose of going there
something that i dont know
Spellbinding.
Their language is similar to Finnish in many ways, it's the same language branch, but studies have shown the the Finns and Saami are genetically more different than Finnish and some more farther away countries. I don't know exactly why, but it has something to do with age old rivalries or something. Finland is Suomi in Finnish.
Im russian and I understand some, is that normal?
No
Vakkret.
Who's here from Frozen 2's "na na na heya na, na heya ha na a"
It sounds a bit country song.
