Maxida Märak from Jokkmokk is a young, promising multi-artist that is deeply rooted in the Swedish Sami indigenous people.
Along with Downhill Bluegrass Band, she recorded the single "Mountain Songs". A single with two songs, where they come together musically to explore the similarities between the Sami culture's musical expression and the American traditional folk music from around the Appalachian mountains. The mountain has a central role in both contexts, and the mining industry affects the lives of both people and nature on both sides of the Atlantic.
In June 2012 they have the release of the single "Mountain Songs" at Saltoluokta Folkmusik Festival. This single contains two tracks "The Mountain " by Steve Earle and "East of the Mountains" written by Jonas Kjellgren.
On the border of the World Heritage area Laponia is Saltoluokta Mountain Station. There have been a folkmusikfestival at the mountainstation since 1978.
Padjelanta, Sarek, Stora Sjöfallet and Muddus are names that ring delightfully in the ears of hikers. These four national parks comprise Laponia, together with the Sjaunja and Stubba Nature Reserves. The area is as large as three Gotlands.
Here, the Sami people have been making gentle footprints for thousands of years. Several Sami camps are in the area.

i live in the middle part of Sweden. I have grow up here were we got most mines in the whole part of Sweden sense 300 years ago. and even if Maxida is from north I feel the connection of love for our land and mountain. I don't think it matters from were you come, you can always feel the connection.
From the wasted fields of old Erie to the coal shafts of Scotland and to rest last at the railroads of the Appalachians God rest my peoples souls.
Material is for all of us, so good and beauty song and lady with native language.
The Sami and the Celts of Britain,seem to have a lot in common.
Love of the winter sun,the mountains,music that comes from the heart and a deep respect for our land and the animals that we share it with.

I love the way her golden voice blends into the soft bluegrass music.. Well done! I've always enjoyed Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.. and the more recently Gangstagrass, has really made HipHop/Rap blend into bluegrass.. Maxida Märak for President.. (of something important) :)
Her heart shines through her voice. It echos though me as I set on my mountain. I miss it out here in this desert.

Nice tune and voice! (I somewhat don't understand the juxtaposition of Sapmi and Appalachia. Weren't the native population in that area displaced as a result from European settlers arriving, not because of mining? But maybe it is less about indigenous cultures, and more about local struggle against industrial and imperial interests destroying the land?)

Misses was bread and raised in Stockholm, not in the north like the rest of us. These days, she even use brown lences, to hide her Swedish Blue Eyes.And really use the Spray-Tans facilities.

I'm looking for my roots. My dad was from West Virginia coal country. Anybody know if there was /is a Sapmi culture in that region? I've got those blue eyes (not so pretty though).
hi. I don't know if there is any Sapmi in US but the blue eyes you might get from some long ago Swedish heritage. because it was very common that Swedes migrated to America for about 150 years ago. mostly to Minnesota what I learned.

+Brooks Anderson there is no sapmi in the US! xD (sweden, norway finland and russia is where they at!) anyone can have blue eyes tbh dont necessarily have to do with heritage
I know that is where they reside as a "tribal group.". There were Swedish migrations to he USA in the 1800s. Some may have been Sapmi. The blue eyed gene apparently originated in the Caucasas predating the Sapmi in now Northeastern Europe.and Russia. I'm still looking..
