A good replacement swap in a Perkins Diesel Ranger, or any small pickup that may or may not have had a Diesel option to begin with. Maybe you got a compact car, this thing should work great in it too, essentially doubling MPG in an already fuel sipping car. Maybe Toyota will wake up and smell the Diesel, for the next gen Prius hybrids.
Reminds me of the 4JB1-TC A non computer DI 2.8L with 4,200 rpm high idle for road use. Put in isuzu troopers every where but North America Sales started late 80s-ish
For sure, it would be like having a 350 small block.. but with better torque curve.. and get twice the fuel mileage.. with a 6sp automatic I bet you could get close to 30mpg on the highway maybe better
Imo be underpowered... the effort wouldnt be worth it.wouldnt tow much of anything. Remember there's no replacement for displacement Cheaper to 5.9 it.
How would one of these fare in a 1/2 ton pickup like an F150? I have a 10th Gen that I'm looking to repower with either a remanufactured 5.4 2V, but I'd also be interested in converting to diesel for the MPG's.
Man, I'd love to see some other manufacturers do this. Or maybe get a few of them together and get a law passed that if an engine meets a sufficiently high standard (say Euro5) it is accepted to the US as an on-road replacement or repower option. Isuzu has a number of solid diesel engines that are just begging for swaps, but since most never got certified for light duty, it's basically impossible to get them to pass emissions in anything smaller than a box truck.

Don im a diesel person and I think 10k for just a engine is too expensive I dunno maybe it's from being poor and working my best to afford what I have not everyone can justify 8-10k for a project when a ls is what 1,500 or less and the parts are cheaper to work on it

I have been looking at putting one of these in my 99 Dakota any suggestions I do light hauling with it . I would like to convert to a manual transmission too
Why manual?
Please do! I will one day do a cummins swap of my own. ill stick with my 07 2500 for now though.
You have the ability to do it and to do it in a way that no one else probably would think of.
I would help get the word out about this engine. Ive been looking at it for a year now wanting one!
Reminds me of the 4JB1-TC
A non computer DI 2.8L with 4,200 rpm high idle for road use.
Put in isuzu troopers every where but North America
Sales started late 80s-ish
Skookum as frig
Anybody know how this Cummins 2.8 compares to the chevy colorado 2.8 diesel. In terms of reliability etc.
would this be suitable for a 60's Chevy c10?
For sure, it would be like having a 350 small block.. but with better torque curve.. and get twice the fuel mileage.. with a 6sp automatic I bet you could get close to 30mpg on the highway maybe better
Imo be underpowered... the effort wouldnt be worth it.wouldnt tow much of anything. Remember there's no replacement for displacement
Cheaper to 5.9 it.
@@vmaxes its a 60s half ton, the frame couldnt tow anything to begin with
Now I can’t decide if I should put this or a 5.2 carbureted in my 99 ram 1500
2.8 Duramax from GM is 181hp and 369 lb/ft. I'm surprised the output from these isn't higher in stock trim.
One will make it to a million miles. One will be junked long before.
Durmax is crappy Cummins is taking over going into everything Even Chevy/GMC
How would one of these fare in a 1/2 ton pickup like an F150? I have a 10th Gen that I'm looking to repower with either a remanufactured 5.4 2V, but I'd also be interested in converting to diesel for the MPG's.
Would this be a viable swap from a 4.7L V8 Land Cruiser 100 series/ LX470?
check out dieseltoys.
Thanks for sharing this video 👏👏👏 truckers greetings from Portugal
Man, I'd love to see some other manufacturers do this. Or maybe get a few of them together and get a law passed that if an engine meets a sufficiently high standard (say Euro5) it is accepted to the US as an on-road replacement or repower option.
Isuzu has a number of solid diesel engines that are just begging for swaps, but since most never got certified for light duty, it's basically impossible to get them to pass emissions in anything smaller than a box truck.
I have a question if i have an eco diesel jeep and the motor goes out would you recommend replacement or go with the 2.8 cummins swap please let me know your thoughts qill help me greatly please let me know your thpughts
I wonder if that'll fit in a TDI Volkswagen.
2.8 should ... the 3.3 and 3.9 are to big
It should they put a 2.8 vr6 in them and a 3.2 vr6 as well in the r34 golfs.
@@skileg10mind you that there vr6 "v6" take up alot less space than these straight 6s tho
@@stenhouse8569 Err, The BT4, the 3.3 and the 2.8 are all Inline 4s man.
Much better off with what you've got
We would love to see a build with this engine. Something smaller. Do like a chevy s10 4x4 or something along those lines.
devoncoolman88 I got a 4bt sitting in front of my 1992 S-10 4x4. 5 speed manual. Looking to get a NV 4500 trans for it.
I wanna see one in a tracker...
I've got a 94 4x4. Hard top. Would be a good candidate
You just wanna see it do stoppies.
had been thinking about a VM jeep swap into my dakota i like this option much better then the VM2.8 and the 4bt looking for 200hp 400tq and good mileage. seems like a great fit
that 2.8 is in the gm colorado/canyon twins and it rips when tuned. my 19 zr2 is tuned to 205hp/405tq at the wheels and still can get 33 mpgs if im careful.
This will go nice in my 1977 IH Scout II, backed by an NV4500.
It looks cool on the show floor just as a harbor freight tools in the store. but what is the longevity?
I was so excited about these before they came out, but they are VERY expensive. I'll just have to be happy with a junkyard LS.
William Decoteau give it a couple years they always are initially.
Just buy a 6bt off some old farmer who knows jack about Diesel's
@Don Olypopper I'm sure it is, but I was wanting to put it in a truck that's not even worth $1500. And you're correct, I'm not a diesel head, only experience I have is my TDI VW.
@Don Olypopper Thanks!
Don im a diesel person and I think 10k for just a engine is too expensive I dunno maybe it's from being poor and working my best to afford what I have not everyone can justify 8-10k for a project when a ls is what 1,500 or less and the parts are cheaper to work on it
That AvE reference, i'm here for it.
Mercury sells a marinised version of this engine.
What's the difference. I know marine companies love the Detroit 6.5
Wow that’s one guy from Cummins
I like hearing !
You should put the big willys in the intro...
Biggest Willy at Sema?
I'm more of an equipment kinda guy, so I wonder what size wood chipper that would power, I tend to say it's a bit on the small size for a 12" chipper
By far the most expensive option VS any other common swap for my TJ. Realizing this was really depressing.
Is the CAD for the R2.8 available other than getting an OEM to approve me for the SEMA Garage? I purchased one of these and am having trouble finding the CAD for it (I need to make a custom bellhousing adapter to go to my Scout T-19 trans, and also a new megabracket to hold different accessories)
This would be cool in my 4X4 Chevy Astro van
That cummins guy loves his product.
Dellacondan he probably lost his job after going on camera advocating for somebody to manipulate the power and emissions through calibration changes. Cummins takes that stuff very seriously and would not like having an employee tell somebody they should do it.
Rail Fan Guess you didn’t hear him a mention that it was a pre-emissions vehicle.
Throw this in my Xterra, I live in Ohio so no worries on emissions🤟🏼
Lol love that. "We'll just ave it". That guy is awesome!
I wanna throw it in my 89 toyota pickup 4x4
Same. My 3VZE is putting on some serious miles. Any idea what's needed to make the swap?
The Hundredth Monkey sucks we never got the diesels they have in the Old Toyota hilux trucks in Europe, those are awesome motors
no, save your money and throw a 1.9 vw tdi in it
When I saw the title of the video my first thought was... I bet that would be great in my jeep. I guess I wasnt the only one.
I want one in my datsun 620,
BOLTR AvE reference! I loved it!!
@0.00-0.35.....Goes to show you how focused I was...Didnt even notice the hot babes in the frame and was wondering what he meant by "Keep your eyes up here"??
I would love to have one of these in my Tacoma.
Definitely cool engine. Prefer mechanical for myself though.

@@jumpinjojo sorry I'm just a dumb truck driver that happens to be a mechanic. Thanks for pointing out that i'm an idiot 🤦♂️.
Alan Lol! I'm here for you! Have a great day!
@@alanack67 lol priceless

I have a 93 5 speed ranger with a 2.3 gas in it and I would love one of these engines to drop in it
