Diesel performance and Toyota 4x4’s are the way it should be … 9 out 10 living warlords would agree!!
I look forward to long term testing a combo like this in the near future…
I love that FJ40! Please *do* a follow up offroading comparo with the TFL FJ Cruiser!!
That 100% needs to happen
The R2.8 engine and repower program is one of the best programs ever offered to gear heads, do-it-yourselfers and off roaders. Fantastic engine and great support from Cummins with their online knowledgebase (transmission mounting plates, engine mounting brackets, etc).
Nice rig!
30 years ago I did a small block Chevy swap into a '74 FJ40. Was my daily driver for 3 years. Still miss that BEAST!
An overdrive trans makes a world of difference in any old vehicle, lets you reach HWY speeds without the engine screaming. Fuel injection & electronic ignition will also "improve" things a ton. Those are my top 3 picks to "improve" an old ride. I still have a carb, points & a 3 speed 😆
I have an 82 BJ60 I'm trying to get back on the road. Everything basically works except it's tired and needing a general overhaul. I'm trying to take out as much electrics as possible.
My 67 C10 is running a crate GM fuel injected (Ram Air) 350, I have a 700R4 in it, but have a 6 (6L80) speed automatic waiting to go in. I am waiting on the electronics/wiring harness still. It’s new territory for me a bit, so I am enlisting the help of a buddy that is a Toyota Technician. He drives a 2021 F150 5.0 SuperCab with a Pro Power Onboard as his camper. He hauls a lightweight truck camper in it and loves it, especially the generator aspect. He had my 2014 Tundra that was a horrible truck for me and a bit of a PIA for him as well. He refused to buy a full size Tundra again!!! Hahaha. Me too!! (Not really, I have driven the new Tundra DoubleCab 4x4 3.5 L TT V6. Much nicer truck than the prior model!! I’m tempted, but have a 2022 F150 Tremor as my modern truck)
The 67 C10 also has 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes. It otherwise looks stock on 15 x 8 rally’s or 15 x 8 and 15 x 10s Cragar SS with TAs for tires…… I enjoy the truck immensely. It’s a very fun and nice thing running a more modern powertrain in the older vehicles. I’m not a big fan of the LS conversions mind you. To each their own. I don’t knock the LS conversions, as some friends have some very i press I’ve trucks with these motors providing some very reliable and good looking motivation!!
Or 4 speed but with the Weber perks it up and you get decent hwy speeds of over 65 to 70!!
My FJ40 has a TBI 350, H55F and a split tcase like this one :P
HWY? Just spell out "highway."
Best setup I've ever seen done to an FJ40.. And I've seen over 1 but less than 3 before! Gotta love classic & modern mix match! 👍
Love it, i wouldn't even change a thing about that FJ40, noy even the unmatching parts man, absolutely fantastic looking thing!
Proffitts Resurection’s Landcruiser did the work for this build. Amazing team of hard workers and good people.
As soon as I heard 2.8 Cummins Diesel I knew it was Proffitts lol
favorite color
Would have loved to know how much that engine costs you and how much to swap I have an 8040 that that needs a swap bad
Great job!
Staring at those interior controls, I can almost smell the ‘75 FJ40 I had as a kid on the farm.
That's an awesome mix between modern and vintage. See you out on the trails.
Great video. Love the old FJ’s. Connor seems a solid dude. Hope to see another video as you spoke of
It’s an fj40. Not an “fj”. An fj is a specific vehicle
@@flight2k5 ok. By FJ’s I was including anything with an FJ designation. But I see your point.
@@flight2k5 take a chill pill man, jeez
I'm a Jeep guy but I gotta say that I really dig that FJ and the fact that it is diesel powered makes it way cool!
I knew they did something cool to the suspension before he mentioned it. Shackle reversal is the bomb for anything with leafsprings up front. Just got surprised when he said he had Bilsteins. I never thought of Bilsteins to give such a compliant ride.
I remember buying a 1975 FJ40 new off the lot for $5,600.00. The 258 cu in six had some torque due to the 4.11:1 differentials and the "Hi-Low" range transfer case. But it was no speed demon on the highway with a no overdrive four speed manual. Fuel mileage sucked and the engine valves eventually burned due to the high road speeds I ran at with unleaded gas. I added a 22 gallon transfer gas tank in the rear to increase the range. The main 18.5 gallon gas tank sat under the front passenger seat and was prone to internal rust due to being in front of the under dash cabin heater. With the extreme temperatures of hot and cold in the Winter, water would condense in the tank and it needed a lot of gas fuel deicer (Methanol "Drygas") to emulsify the water build up in the tank. I had to buy a case of it. No power steering or brakes. But I liked it in the snow.
Thank you so much for making this video. I emailed Tommy last month for a comparison video between the FJ Cruiser and the FJ40 to see which model was more capable in similar form, this is a great comparison. Now let’s see it off road… articulation, traction, highway, ect. Fj40 definitely wins on approach, departure, and break over but who can flex the best?
Easily the 40. 2 solid axles? FJ cruisers are nice and have a lot of creature comforts, but they will not beat a 40 in pure offroad.
I have an R2.8L repower in my 1989 Jeep YJ, and It was great to get her back on the road after having had the old 2.5L motor. It's a long road that's not for the faint of hart
How much did you spend on the swap? Also what mpg are you getting? What are the new specs?
Would have been nice to give the shop that did all the work some credit. Think we all know who they are. Plus what he spent to make it happen. Considering the crate engine is about 10k.
WHO IS IT!! I have a tacoma that needs this engine swap. I have the 2.7 and im not in love with it.
How do you not give the shop a plug?! I would like to know who did the work.

Really cool and interesting build! Connor was excellent presenting and speaking on camera too. Very natural
That engine install is outstanding! Love this build!
Loving a rugged look Aussies love. Fascinating seeing a US version of BJ 40’s build that’s not ‘picture perfect’ or too big an engine for fuel mileage. (Aussie versions are more then 95% diesel - hence BJ not FJ). 2.8 Cummins looks mint! Too many kilometres travelled over here and 9.7 km per litre looks Aussie proof indeed. Hope I got the manual calculations right. Haha.
Love it, a really nice restomod, really jealous ngl looks awesome
This was awesome! Really enjoyed the conversation!
Way back when I was a roofer buddy had an FJ40 he used to drive us to work in. So awesome.
My absolute dream vehicle to own. Excellent conversion!
Hi, Narva have a LED flasher unit that fits the 40 series and you then can install all LED globes in flasher and park lights as well as stop tail, I have done this to my HJ47 Landcruiser, works great and globes don't blow due to vibrations, also you can install LED t10 globes in the dash to brighten dash lights up.
i
Great job
From Argentina 🇦🇷
Keep it up
Love the FJ40.........talked my Dad into buying one in 1970 when we lived in Montana. It would go anywhere. Wish I still had it.
Late to the party here, but that is a fantastic installation! Diesel is the way to go with vintage Toyota. I've been running a 4BD1T in my '77 FJ40 for about eight years and it is just turn-key reliable and very capable in the 0-65mph range. Nothing beats cruising around with the fam, top and doors off, windshield folded down. :)
I want one!! Thank you for sharing! I love you guys!!
Nice vehicle. I have been waiting to see a video or article about an FJ/BJ40 with a Cummins R2.8 engine transplant.
Thats a cool swap. Thanks for sharing this vid!
great looking beast. wouldn’t change the paint job at all.
Awesome build and great power train. Would love to see it off road.
Just to clarify a few things for the folks watching... Transmission is an H55F not J and the tcase would be out of an FJ60/62 as that mounts up directly to the H55F. Great video!
Absolutely 👍
why would you waste your time with pre history junk.. hard riding, cold, noisy junk. upto the 80,s. toyota just flog dead horses.. & people buy the crap..only decent toyota, is the 80 /100 series, & thay, are not,,as good as the nissan gu.. mate has a 92 & 96 ,80 series.. he re built the 92 calipers for his 96,,,,dont fit....same vehicle.. toyota,,yeeeehh.. no thanks..
@@harrywalker5836 Easy on the sauce, bro.
@@harrywalker5836 Cuz in the US, Nissan's are junk and don't compare with Toyota for reliability...as per various sources, never owned one. If the GU would have made it to the US then maybe a different story on owning one. Modern equivalent doesn't spec out well for long term. Aussie videos show that the running gear except the engine are robust and handle the Duramax swap pretty well. I see a lot of them in Kuwait and thought about importing one to the US but then parts would be a biotch.
@@6806goats1 aaahh,, no..toyotas are crap.. nissan kill them.. toyota lost the plot on how to build a 4x4. they flog dead horses for too long, then miss the train on updates. the 1hz,90kw, was a good,,,, ,,, ?,,gutless engine. last forever cos you cant blow it up. nissans was the same of that era. but, the design of the nissan was more 4x4 friendly. practical. plus, for your u.s. info.. toyota owners here fit nissan diffs.. bit like those chev wankers fitting ford 9''.. wont buy a ford or nissan,,but use the bits.. if,,you put the 60 series running gear on a late 1hzfte,?, alphabet noodle engine code,.. 100 series.. it would be better, except the front diff has radius arms that are bolted horizontaly. unlike the bolt thru nissan, same as f100, range rover.. plus, youd have a transmission brake. best brake in the world.. but no, toyota went yuppie..luxury bs machines.. non, of my trucks have ifs. 62 - 02. s/duty. &, not 1 has a computer.. ''your s/duty has to have a computer.'',,hmm,, no.. its a 4.2tdi german mwm sprint. zf 5sp dana 50, stirling rear. you,, never get the goooood stuff.. 13 lt 100.. 700 nm.. german ..look them up in brazil ytoob..or africa.. they should of sold the tacoma, & 150 here. but,,were jap.. the 6.6 lly/lbz. too big, heavy. they do LS swaps.
Not only is this super cool and and looks fun to own, it’ll fetch a few pretty pennies if you ever sell for sure.
The diesel is a cool option! Here in Texas Diesel and Regular Octane often swap places on price point through out the year. So it’s still a great option.
Where I live diesel is well over a dollar higher per gallon.
On average you get 30% better fuel economy on diesel. So when diesel gets 30% higher than regular unleaded they cost about the same to drive. That rarely happens. Here in California it's at about 20%. If it gets to 30% that means some refinery had an accident.
Love it. Thanks for sharing.
Nice well thought out build. I like it.
Years ago (1990) I was down in Costa Rica with some friends. Two of them were from S America so language wasn’t a problem. We rented this lady and her Toyota Land Cruiser to drive 4 of us around for about a week. Her Toyota was like a suv or suburban style and there was room for everyone to sit. There was a lot of hills we were going up and down in and her Toyota cruised right along with out a hitch. It was also a diesel. I really liked the setup but you couldn’t buy it that way in the US. My son has a 70 FJ 55 perhaps he might like this idea.
I think Blaze should have his own little car segment show 👍👍
Very cool, and that engine swap looks great!
Beautiful job!!!
Fj40 Hands down,!!! Nothing beats that FJ!!!
Very nice. How much out the door? Given the crate engine was just under 9k how much was the install? I have two FJ 40s and am curious.
That is such a cool setup, awesome.
What a great FJ40! Loved it!
Great video. The thought of a 2.8 Cummins in an FJ-40 is very neat. Of course, technically speaking, having a diesel turns an FJ into a BJ. 👍
😂
Wow, daily driving an FJ40, you're my hero Connor!! What a cool rig, thanks for the inspiration. Just curious what shop you used in Colorado?
That green FJ sounds just like my former gas station plow vehicle '71 Bronco that I bought in 1991 for $1,500, which was about $1200 too much once I dug into it.
That FJ40 is cool AF!!!! I wish I had been into them instead of Land Rovers. Please get him back for some wheeling!
If you look for an original PTO winch from the Toyota FJ series, it will definitely be very rare
When my 3.0 goes out on my '94 second gen 4Runner I'm definitely swapping this engine in it and installing rear lockers maybe fronts to
Love the older rigs but I think most people do it because they like to be trendy not because of whatever other reasons people list
Excellent engine choice!
Do you happen to know which shop he used for this? I’m looking to do this to my 1986 Ford Ranger.
For as Windy as it was your audio is great
I would like to know who did the swap! Looks great and I am needing the same thing done
A conversion that seems to be popular is the Isuzu 4JJ motor as well.
over rated engine.
super nice conversion
Looks like a fun rig and a solid build. I've seen videos of work done by this shop but don't remember the name. Proffitt's Resurrection Land Cruisers. The 2.8 is great for this build, wish Cummins had a 6 cylinder repower crate engine but how much would it weigh? Yes, I'm aware of the 6BT but too heavy (1100 lbs is what I'm reading) plus it has to be common rail for my 80 series. JMO. I see on Mud where it's been done several times, just not for me.
5:36 Thank goodness, he's back!
Thats a really cool ride!
I'd guess it was built by Profits. Super nice
i thnk he should have done something about the interior rusty roof other than that a very cool little build
Man up Toyota and bring these back! A real mans off road rig.
even though diesel is more expensive than gas, you are still far ahead in terms of saving $$, Diesel does more MPG, I would like to say 30% more so that alone offsets the cost of it plus you don't need to refuel as frequently, way more torque so it just moves at low revs, Love it.
So cool with the Cummins diesel!
Fantastic build.
Really cool!!!! Inspiring!!!
14:42 he loves you so much Tommy!
Good Engine Swap , in Asia they also use it on a Toyota Hi Ace chassis on a Toyota rebadge Foton Van
Totally cool ride with a motor to take it where it should go with proper power
GR8 job
Love it!
Cool FJ...much cooler than version 2.0.
Oh man! I went with a VW 1.9 TDI... Its tuned to 180hp and 285tq and get about 30-35mpg with 35s and a lift and a 5.10 rear...i should drop it down to 4.88s anf get about 35mpg again but I just got these 5.10s it just.turnef out to be too low.... I did test drive a twin turbo 4BT and it was an absolute monster
Wow!! I hear a number of people have used the TDI. Do you have a build about this on any forums or anything? 30mpg!!!!!! Wonder how that would work in my 80. ;-)
@@NigelNaughton I honestly can't remember it's been so long. Tbh I didn't do the swap, I was planning to when I found one for sale and got really lucky, it was done with a Cody built kit and was ok me of their first ones. With 33s and a 488 rear I can get 35mpg pretty easily
Just needs bigger tires to offset the gears :-D
Very cool. I like it!
Yall need to do a built vs. Bought series where you buy a junk yard truck and get a total budget of 20k to build it vs. Buying a 20k truck used. Then compare the two good and bad.
Awesome video and awesome vehicle for sho!!!!!!
Bought a new FJ40 in 1978 for 7200.00, a lot of money. Still my favorite to this day.
That 40 is awesome!
Did you have to change the front and rear axles?
Would be great to get more information about the engine and build perhaps another person will set up an interview with the shop that did it
That would be great, I want to know the shop too.
Bloody COOL!
Hey TFLclassic... I am thinking on buying one as well.. Is it possible if I can get the business information from Connor where the engine got swapped on his FJ40 ? I am thinking for the same engine for 2004 Land rover discovery
this is AWESOME
"with a few wrenches, you can sorta do it yourself"... proceeds to pay a shop to do the enigne swap lol
lmfaoooo i was looking for this comment.
An R2.8 in an FJ-40? Can't imagine what that cost. I get it though. My '78 FJ40 was a lot of fun. Mine had the I-6 4-speed. Such a fun vehicle until I blew a rod after an oil change.
the toyota 6, is a chevy copy.. both, crap..
Very very very cool!!! Cummins + Toyota, unbeatable old gal, wish for better paint, but understand the reason, definitely not a trailer queen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love it. I’m curious what the overall cost of the build is? That motor cant be cheap, plus the fab work the shop did. Looks like a really good quality build. Makes me want to do this same thing.
The motor alone is about $8500.
@@seeharvester Pricey
Hey owner, the light switch were modified, nice ride 👍
Very cool!
Was this the original with a 3.7 Diff and non full floating rear axles?
Pretty cool 👍
computer is added to the wiring no messing with hooking it up it will start up with out being in the rig.
Very cool! I have a 74 myself.... with a chevy 350. Hauls ass
I'm in the same boat...converting to disc brakes and thinking about power steering (not sure if it's a necessity at this time though). This is my third and last FJ so I'm going to take my time with future modifications. Although it came with the hard top I plan on using a new soft top from Bestop in the near future. I had one on my last FJ and loved it.
@@seanrupe9767 power steering is pretty nice.......
Something like a Cummins fits the fj better than all the 350's everyone puts in them.
Very cool I have 77 mustard also want to do this also
Had my Toyota 2F engine rebuilt to modern standards - all modern internals, EFI, electronic ignition, bored to 4.4 liters. Lots more power, fuel efficiency, easy to drive.
plastic oil pan and lots of plastic bits. The R2.8 is basically an engine made for the chinese market - and parts are hard to come by. would have just went with a 4bt where you can get parts at any corner store and only takes 3 wires to run.
🌧🌧on his 🎆🎇
How exactly would you get the 4bt to fit under the hood? Are you going to do an 8” lift kit?
