You were correct about the battle theme vibe. Zero Two is the final boss of Kirby 64.
0² is the reincarnation of Zero from Dream Land 3, the wings and halo represent that reincarnation/rebirth and the song is fitting for that
While I love 02 theme I actually like the boss theme right before it “Miracle Matter” as while 02 is slow and methodical Miracle Matter feels crazed and all over the place
Miracle Matter's theme has one of my favorite openings to a boss theme, the first keys resemble the usual boss fight theme for all previous encounters, only to quickly repeat and devolve with lower tones and then, you could a subvertion of the boss fight theme you've been used to, and then Miracle Matter's motif starts to build and take center stage throughout the rest of the track, absolute banger.
My favorite Kirby 64 fact is that it's rated TEEN for BLOOD. Pure comedy.
@@Galantium I think that's about the N64 emulator as a whole and not just Kirby 64 but it was still funny seeing the Teen rating for the Kirby 64 trailer
@@eggo_gamez I think it was still rated for blood in Kirby's Dream Collection on the Wii, so it's not just NSO. But I'm pretty sure it didn't have a teen rating, though.
@waypastcool853 You can see the rating in the video.
@@waypastcool853 Dream Collection is rated E10+ and is more likely referring to Dream Land 3 than 64 in its description of rating content. Neither game has ever been rated E10+ alone though in any release. The T rating applies to NSO as a whole.
@@SacredFaerie Thanks for clearing things up, I was going off of my late-night memory. I don't think I worded my reply properly. I do know that the T rating was for NSO as a whole, I was just trying to say that I thought the game was still rated for blood previously.
This game's soundtrack is truly special, Ruins, Factory Inspection, Miracle Matter and 02 all have my heart.
Also I agree that the word "peak" has been ruined.
Ripple Star Theme is actually misnamed, the world map actually features the proper melody associated with Ripple Star, the orchestra plays it briefly.
The song is actually the music used for stage 3 which is the siege of the fairy castle, basically a gauntlet of enemies from throughout the entire game, hence why the music is all over the place and the pacing feels frantic. Kirby is moving forward and upwards through the level to get to the 'final' boss, Miracle Matter.
Zero Two (0²) is the true final boss of the game, only available after collecting all the Crystal Shards, he's an angelic version of the final boss of Kirby's Dream Land 3, he's even got a band-aid on his head from that defeat. The actual melody is rather subtle underneath all the electronic sounds, but its strangely emotional. It impacted me a lot as it was my first experience with a Kirby final boss as im sure people have told you by now, tend to be borderline Eldritch abominations.
i love how ridiculous it'd sound to a non-kirby fan "a final boss you killed before, now as a fallen angel, it has a band-aid on its head from that defeat"
@@Kokokekko7 The band-aid is covering Zero's empty eye socket.
well it's not really _misnamed,_ it IS _a_ "Ripple Star Theme"
But yea I was surprised too. Not unwelcomely so, though!
Ripple Star is so damn good! That drum solo is so good!
So Kirby’s Dream Land 2 and 3 as well as Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards comprise what fans like to call the Dark Matter trilogy as in all 3 the villains are a race of beings by the same name, led by Zero, the pale orb with the red eye. Dream Land 3 is kinda infamous for its final boss fight as when you knock Zero into its final phase, its eye breaks out of the rest of its body in a rather gory fashion. 64 sees Zero return as the final boss, reborn as Zero Two or 0², now sporting a halo and wings, the later of which are depicted as exposed nerve endings in the games art. It’s also crying blood. Zero kinda singlehandedly started the trend of Kirby final bosses being eldritch horrors, a trend that continues to this day.
I did NOT remember Ripple Star Theme being such a bop, what the heck
Me either, I tried heel tapping the bass line and nearly shook myself out of my chair LMAO. It's probably because we were too busy getting through the maze like level, I got lost several times looking for secrets.
"What is that enemy? Looks like one of those biblically accurate angels."
Correct
I'll admit, that was not the song I expected from 'Ripple Star theme'. (The one I was expecting actually came up in the medley at around 20:40, which is the overall theme for said world.) THIS one is from the final main stage of the game, which is essentially a massive enemy gauntlet where you move room to room and just mow down waves upon waves of enemies with whatever abilities you see fit. So it very much matches that frantic, high-energy vibe.
Zero Two is yet another Kirby final boss theme and arguably the most iconic of them all, to the point that I was a little surprised you didn't immediately pick it up in the medley. But that's nostalgia talking. Like a lot of Kirby final bosses, it ends a rather upbeat game with a horrifying monstrosity in another dimension. As for the name, it's actually a bit simpler than you'd expect. The final boss of Kirby's Dream Land 3 was Zero, a giant white eyeball. It returns in Kirby 64 in a 'revived' angelic form, thus Zero Two.
Factory Inspection is a must listen from this ost
Indeed
Yes
Early Kirby music was done by Hirokazu Ando and Jun Ishikawa. One thing that defines the style in their Kirby music are fast, repetitive, staccato 8th- or 16th-note phrases. It’s very apparent in their chiptune work and you can also hear it in Kirby 64 too; in both Ripple Star and Zero-Two you’re constantly bombarded with notes with no pauses.
If you are asking if there is regularly voice acting in the Kirby series the answer is "Poyo".
"Welcome, visitors, to the Dream Discoveries Tour of our science facility, Lab Discovera! On this thrilling tour, you'll be introduced to the ultimate life-form, specimen ID-F86! From the moment ID-F86 arrived on our planet, it began a campaign of destruction that threatened the native wildlife of our entire world. Luckily, our research team managed to capture it before it could complete its invasion. Once it was contained, our lab began studying ID-F86's spatial teleportation ability- Research that laid the groundwork for the planetary warp technology we enjoy today! However, 30 years after our research began, a "warp-experiment incident" occurred in this facility. A new life-form, separated from the main specimen, escaped in the aftermath. That new subspecimen has yet to be recovered. In the time since, ID-F86 has shown no signs of activity. It is now kept in a state of permanent stasis within the custom-made Eternal Capsule here on the top level of Lab Discovera. And here we are! Let's meet the ultimate life-form: Specimen ID-F86!"
No, that's the anime, Kirby never says poyo in the games. In the series actual proper voice acting is just in forgotten land
Makiko Ohmoto has been voicing Kirby in games since around Smash Bros 64, and the general direction/idea for Kirby's voice was actually established all the way back in 1994 on a bonus CD included with with a Kirby manga (though performed by Taeko Kawata, not Ohmoto). It's pretty evident that the voice of Kirby was always a high pitched almost squeaky excited toddler voice, even going back to the 90s, so in that way the Poyo began when they first decided what Kirby would sound like.
@@Fannintendociccio1 Actually he does say "POYO" in Kirby's Epic Yarn.
@@yoshistar705connormiller9 and also in mass attack, but epic yarn is in a weird spot not being from Hal, and mass attack has a pass because Kirby says poyo only in his split into his 10 split apart and likely unable to think for themselves/babies so it actually fits. Actual Kirby never actually says poyo himself in the mainline games, he can talk and reason normally, he's just a young boy, not a baby like in the anime
YESS! 🎉
I'm so glad that 0²'s theme has appeared in your recommendations. ❤
This music piece is special to me, as I only got to reach this final boss in my high school years.
Back when I played the game in childhood days I never got to the final part.
Love your reaction, thanks for uploading them! ^^
Zero Two is so dark-sounding because, well, it's a giant winged orb with a single bleeding cycloptic eye. the eye doesn't bleed during the fight, but in the credits, there's concept art for Zero Two that shows its eye dripping blood. but in Kirby games, oftentimes the final boss will be some sort of cosmic horror abomination. The concept of entropy, a planet-consuming demon, a universe-devouring god(that looks suspiciously like Kirby!), tragic, dethroned royalty trying to reclaim their former glory, the end bosses in Kirby games are pretty messed up most of the time. the creator of Kirby did this on purpose, having a cutesy cuddly setting but the final bosses always being horrific conceptual nightmares, which ends up begging the question: if Kirby routinely kills multidimensional gods, WHAT IS KIRBY?
The particles that come out of the eye when you shoot it are red, so technically it does bleed in-game.
I like to think that Kirby is simply a god eater.
he's a little guy
Im so glad we finally got an answer to What is Kirby.
The question now is.. Who created him?
@@mrcloudark787 the real existential kicker is that existence does not imply creation, little guy been around
When you're in the dark (matter):
Ripple Star is famously tension-filled and insane; the world map associated with the level theme you heard is a nervous rendition of the "rest area" music that appears in Super Star AND in Smash Bros Melee. They know what you expect and flip it on its head, which does a phenomenal job of putting the player on edge for that stretch of the game.
Ripple Star's melody is different from Rest Area though, and even moreso from Float Islands which is what Rest Area is based on.
Oh shoot you love Ape Escape soundtrack too?? And Dream Theater mentioned?? Subscribed lol
But yea Ripple Star as well as Factory Inspection are my favorite. I love Ripple Star just cause remind me of jazz a little, how pretty much every part has it's own solo part as one whole song.
Yall can keep your Marx's ⁰² is my pick for favorite final boss theme
0² is for sure the One Winged Angel of Kirby.
So glad you got to listen to Sand Canyon 3 from Drsamlamd 3 in a way, thanks to the medley
This was the first time I beat a Kirby game and when this music kicked in and the return of 0 now 02, a boss I could never beat, from the last game made me LOCK IN
Kirby ost's are always full of surprises and they did remake ripple star in Kirby triple deluxe called ripple red
Omg yes! 0²'s theme is iconic, i love how it sounds both dreadful and hopeful, I cannot imagine experiencing it in an actual N64 (i first played this game through the Wii's emulation)
Dreamland 3 and Crystal Shards have my favorite soundtracks in the Kirby series, so I hope you listen to more of them in the future! Zero Two is one of my favorite final boss themes of all time. There’s been a number of rearrangements over the years, but none of them capture the sadness of the original.
Zero is the final boss of Dreamland 3, the master of Dark Matter. Kirby defeats it by prying its eye out and beating the crap out it it. There is blood. Zero Two is a reincarnation of Zero. It has wings, a halo, and a large bandage, presumably where its eye was originally. As the true final boss, you can only fight it by collecting all 60 crystal shards. In the battle, you fly around in a 3D space and shoot the crystals you collected at it.
Peak indeed. Both Ripple Star and VS Zero Two are composed by Jun Ishikawa. The 25th Anniversary Orchestra's rendition of 02 Battle is definitely my favorite final boss arrangement in that concert. As for what 'Ripple Star' means, it's the name of the final world of Kirby 64 (besides the final boss world Dark Star which doesn't really have any levels). It's a planet in the shape of a heart with a face, so I imagine 'Ripple' was the Japanese devs trying to describe a beating heart. That's just my guess though.
22:06 I think we all thought that the first time we saw Zero Two . Nice video💫
The Whole Kirby 64 soundtrack is amazing.
YES!!! Kirby 64 was my childhood intro to Kirby lol I would literally have dreams about traveling to the planets
This is my favorite Kirby game..the music is awesome too
Kirby final bosses were either kinda creepy or silly up until this one, this was the first game to have some horrid cosmic threat with dramatic music, something the modern games lean into way more. Before this it was evil entities and menacing orbs...and King Dedede lmao
*Listening to O^2 theme*
Jesse: "Who is that big enemy? It looks like one of those biblically accurate angels."
So close. So close Jesse. XD
When you say "this is peak videogame music" is kinda what was the intention, iirc Kirby music was never thought to be played by real instruments, it was visioned as "pure videogame music" like "you can only hear it because is in a videogame"
Also the "this is like hear Dream Theater" fits so well and I havent noticed hahahahaha
Oh good timing I just got done replaying Kirby 64
For the record, diatomic oxygen is written with the two as a subscript, not a superscript.
The Kirby series is full of humor. Especially when it comes to the interactions between Kirby and King Dedede as well as the juxtaposition between the final bosses and whatever Kirby is doing.
Laugh at the eldritch horrors. Point at them and laugh heartily, for fear only gives them strength.
Zero Two introduced me to Kirby's ongoing saga of having incredibly dark and disturbing final (or in this case secret) bosses. Zero Two is the secret, TRUE final boss you can only fight when you collect all crystal shards in the game.
Great choices! I always thought Ripple star was like a horror movie soundtrack if they decided to use jazz, with the first half being the suspense and the second half being like the killer chase scene.
02 is my favorite Kirby song ever, and one of my favorite songs ever. Its so good. I like how its so serious, but then the strings come in and it sounds like music for mourning the loss of someone. Like having a climatic battle after losing a friend.
A shame you didn't react to the Sumper Smash Bros Brawl version of 02. It's the Brawl version that put the song on the map for most people, and honestly, it is an amazing rendition of the song.
*quick shiver of excitement
One of Zero 2's main methods of attacking is shooting bloody tears out of it's eyeball. Kirby games are wild man.
I've never heard this song before but it sounds like it could be a Mr Bungle song. Pretty cool!

Ripple Star in Kirby 64 is a planet inhabited by fairies, and it was invaded by Dark Matter, a 'force of nature' type enemy that is the antagonist of the game. Dark Matter invaded Ripple Star because the fairies have a crystal that is antithetical to 'Dark Matter'. The game's subtitle 'The Crystal Shards' refers to the fact that 'Dark Matter' shatters the crystal, and its shards rain down over multiple planets. The planets that the shards fell to are the worlds of the game. The sixth and final world is Ripple Star. The 'Ripple Star' theme is the music for the last level before the boss of the Ripple Star world. It's a combination climb up the occupied palace and enemy gauntlet where Dark Matter is throwing everything it can at you.
Ripple Star sounds like Jazz played by an Industrial Band. lol
02 (zero 2) is such a crazy finale especially considering you killed this already in a previous game and it’s just back
Haven't watched yet but happy to see this. Loved this game and Zero Two is my overall favourite antagonist in the series as well as a piece I really love.
Zero 2 in Kirby doesn't have anything to do with oxygen really.
It's just the Rebirth of the final boss called Zero that came back for another round of casual world overtaking as Kirby plot usually goes^^'
With such a direct naming scheme some Kirby folks wonder if there will ever be a Zero 3.
Zero 2 works because Zero casted it's body away before being defeated (which was kinda disturbing and graphical).
It's sorta like a Mewthree situation where it's really unlikely but never impossible making for some fun theorycrafting :D
Second kirby game with blood in it, final boss is a bleeding eyeball with a halo and wings lol.
Kirby 64 is my darling, i even went out of my way to platinum the retroarch Achievement list
There is no voice acting or text in the early kirby games..it's all faces and gestures
Does ripple star remind anyone else of the main theme (?) from Coyboy bebop?
You should react to the Smash Version of 0². ^^
Dude I'm surprised no one recommended you Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Character Selection Theme.
I don't know if it's just me, but I've always heard the words "help me" at 12:00
Knowing the context of the song, it could just be me gaslighting myself. Anyone else hear them?
