Yes, brilliant diagnosis, you're right - I hadn't had the problem because I'd been using the fast charger ! I just used the slow charger & get no charging even if i wake it up after I have plugged in the slow charger I then have to disconnect then reconnect to get the phone to start charging ! I thought I had figured it out in the settings menu: Face ID & Passcode, USB Accessories, Turn OFF / ON to prevent accessories from connecting after more than one hour - That makes no difference ! What I seem to remember from Unbox Therapy is that he got one of the iPhones charging, left it to charge, came back a while later and discovered that it had stopped charging. So far I have not had that but then I charge it with the fast charger... Yesterday I found that the phone unpaired itself from the car (Mercedes 'Command' system) and I had to re-pair it again.....but then that could be the 'Command' system......£2500 for a load of German junk. The iPhone is trouble free and a bargain price compared to what I've got going on with that ! Many thanks for your reviews - I find them very informative & most helpful.

Apple hasn't stated what it is yet. Could be software, could be charging port, could be logic board. With the 8, they had issues with the charging port and logic board, so I'm actually leaning towards hardware problem since no other iOS 12 devices have the issue.

Absolutely right! I have been using my Iphone Xs for about 2 years. I have encountered this problem recently after replacing a new battery. My phone turns off when I plug in and on back when I unplug it. Wireless charger fixed the problem. However, I haven't try using a fast charger yet!
They're cheaper to produce because they get away with putting old tech into $1000 phones. By not including the fast charger alone they increase their profit margin, add to that the much more basic operating system which isn't doing complex tasks like split screen and running AOD 24/7 and you've saved a few programmers. All little things that add up to a cheaper design/production. Quality on these high ends is equal though, when Samsung is producing screens and other hardware for Apple, how much different can quality be??

You do realise Samsung makes a lot of harward for the iphones, including the single most important thing, the screen. I've never had a android phone die from anything other than a cracked screen from dropping it. Seeing as we've been able to replace the batteries on everything up to the Note 8 easily with removable back covers, just what longevity problems are you talking about? My Note 8 battery still last as long as the day i got it 12 month ago. My Note 4 still works perfectly albeit with a cracked screen. LG G2, i only upgraded as i wanted a big screen, that's my current 2nd phone, and it's 5 years old. How long do you expect out of a phone? 10 years?

Mine doesn't charge even with the 29w fast charger when it is idle. If it becomes idle and I plug any lightning cable it doesn't charge even when i wake it up, but if re-insert the cable when it's awake no problem, also wireless charging no problem. I think only a software update can fix this.

It was from the first things I tried mate, didn't work either. I already returned it back to the store and I got a refund, it was good it was on the first days. I will keep the money , if they finally fix it I will get it back. Thanks for the repy!

Also, Unbox Therapy found additional charging issues, some worse than others, even to the point of not charging at all, no matter what. nell y unbow therapy found a bunch of issues with the charging but he was using the basic charging port that came with the box. Apple fixed this with the 12.1 beta update. These things happen. Apple should’ve included a faster charging but they didn’t do now they got to clean up their mess
I never even took the standard charger out of the box, i use a wireless charging stand at night and if i ever need to charge during the day, i have the 29w charger with usb-c to lightning cable, no issues.
Oh. All of these problems in about one week after releasing day. I'm glad that I decided to leave this company and honestly, I have (zero) regrets. Bye

It's literally the way you hold your phone. Your hands at the perfect angle and grip and completely shut off all wireless connections. Barely touching it at all will maximize your signal but it will not be even half of it's best. That's the way it works apparently
It’s a bug people IOS 12 has setting when when u let your phone sit for 60 min and don’t touch u can’t plug a charger in to unlock the phone but it’s acting up it’s doing it 30 sec but it’s fix in beta 12.1
I had this problem I had a chat with Apple support and followed the steps that they gave... go to settings->Face ID ->enable usb Accessories and then power off and on that fixed this charging issue for me...
Disabling security features to enable charging of your phone is unacceptable. Why should you have to make your phone less secure, just to be able to charge it?
Supposedly a new Apple update will fix this but let's be honest, this should have been picked up and fixed before the devices shipped. Apple's testing and quality control, is nowhere near as good as it should be.
So....in the case that you plug in the charger when the screen of the phone is off it’s true: the screens doesn’t turn on and there is no indication of the phone receiving a charge...however leave it undisturbed for a couple of minute and the phone will start charging after giving the on screen indication. Apple has confirmed however that there is a software update lined up that will fix this MINOR annoyance

I used an iPad Pro charger on the iPhone Max and didn’t have any issue, so I think the matter is with the number of amperes each charger puts out. The standard may be too weak for the phone.
noticed it the other day, if you shake or wake after you stick in slow charger it works for a bit... you are right, fast charge no issue. Not happy really with the amount of cash it cost me.

There’s an option in settings about USB connections and if the phone unlocked when connected. Once I turn this off it worked fine. Not sure if this is the same problem people have been having.....
Great video and first I've heard of this "resolution". I use Qi charging 90% of the time and would only use lightning to get a "fast charge" much like you. So I never experienced this but will definitely try it for myself.

Tbh I switched to the iPhone Xs for many reasons from a galaxy s8 plus. Even though it was a solid phone one thing I hated was that I always had to check the phone before I charged it because it would sometimes not fast charge and say 44 hours till fully charged. I expected it to be a typo error or something but when I woke up the next day it only increased by 5 percent for 8 hours

I have an Ipad mini, purchased in 2013, exactly the same thing is happening when you plug in a non manufacturer charger with a lower than spec power rating.
Everyone is testing this particular issue with the standard charger and now the fast charge method. I have seen no one talking about this happening or NOT happening with the wireless charge method. Does it charge properly from "sleep" or idle with a wireless charge method or is it exclusive to the standard charge method?

I also have the 15" MacBook Pro and the iPhone Xs Max. However, when I try to charge the iPhone Xs Max with the MacBook Pro charger like you just did, it does not start charging. But if you plug the cable in twice without waking it up, it starts to charge. You might have experienced the same in this video. Let it go to sleep, or wake it up again just for it to go back so sleep for a little bit, then try the fast charger again. Does not work for me. :/
Getting intermittent results regardless of using fast charger or not. Something is definitely wrong. Also occurs using car charger. Need to unplug and replug to initiate charging.

My girlfriend and I both bought our 10smax weeks apart with additional Apple* chargers and both phones only charge on one side. If I plug it in and it charges then remove charger from iPhone rotate 180 degrees insert, phone does not charge.
My comment will probably go nowhere, but I tested my wife’s and my XS Max with the in-the-box 5W charger and both of them worked just fine. Along with 7.5, 10, 12 watt iPad and 3rd party chargers and 5 and 7.5 watt wireless chargers and none exhibited any issues. I hope it’s just some software fix they can push out for those who are having an issue. EDIT: Even as a long time iPhone user, I’ve always found their typical terrible responses to proven issues to be stupid. Also, not including a fast charger or even a FASTER charger (like a 12W) is facepalm worthy.
It's a software issue as my son's iPad mini has this problem since the IOS update to 12. It's not the charger itself. It's the software that drives the charging cycle. Waiting for the update
I have charged my iPhone XS mas with a iPad charger and it charged really fast then few days later when I tried to charge it by the regular charger it shows to be charging but the % doesn’t increase until I switch off the phone with the charger inserted and then switch it off.. Then only it charges properly with the regular charger I am very tensed as its been only 4-5months I have got this phone... may I know the reason behind why is it so??

There seems to be an issues with WiFi and lte speeds because of the Intel modem now. There not getting there full speeds. Can u find out more info thx

Mine has moments where it won’t charge even after waking it after being plugged in. Had to flip the cable over to get it to charge.

It’s a bug people IOS 12 has setting when when u let your phone sit for 60 min and don’t touch u can’t plug a charger in to unlock the phone but it’s acting up it’s doing it 30 sec but it’s fix in beta 12.1
For the price of that phone...Apple should recall them all!

I had this problem I had a chat with Apple support and followed the steps that they gave... go to settings->Face ID ->enable usb Accessories and then power off and on that fixed this charging issue for me...
So you still have the $1200 phone that you need to go in and turn things off to fix a massive problem?? LOL
Disabling security features to enable charging of your phone is unacceptable. Why should you have to make your phone less secure, just to be able to charge it?
Having to wake the phone before charging is a "massive problem"? It sounds like brushing your teeth and wiping your bottom must be beyond you.
Correct, this is a security feature to prevent hacking by low power devices. People should be happy.
Supposedly a new Apple update will fix this but let's be honest, this should have been picked up and fixed before the devices shipped. Apple's testing and quality control, is nowhere near as good as it should be.
So....in the case that you plug in the charger when the screen of the phone is off it’s true: the screens doesn’t turn on and there is no indication of the phone receiving a charge...however leave it undisturbed for a couple of minute and the phone will start charging after giving the on screen indication. Apple has confirmed however that there is a software update lined up that will fix this MINOR annoyance

It might be just for certain iphone xs, my Xs Max works with standard charger as well when it is not awake.
Great job solving this charging issue.... how do you get wifi to stop dropping off and reverting back to 2 g speeds. Maybe there is an antenna I need to turn on in settings....

I used an iPad Pro charger on the iPhone Max and didn’t have any issue, so I think the matter is with the number of amperes each charger puts out. The standard may be too weak for the phone.
It does it on the fast charging too
I have the opposite problem. When I put my iPhone to a fast charger nothing happen and then back to a standard charger then it works.
Apple : it's a safety feature with no toggle , the only to disable it is buy 100$ fast charger
noticed it the other day, if you shake or wake after you stick in slow charger it works for a bit... you are right, fast charge no issue. Not happy really with the amount of cash it cost me.
How is this problem solved ?

Liors I tried the toggle suggestion you made and I have completed all updates and it doesn’t work/charge right. 🤷🏼♀️😢 I am calling Apple and Verizon in the morning. Very frustrating.
I heard it's already fixed in the new ios 12 beta 1 version so we shall seeeeee.
There’s an option in settings about USB connections and if the phone unlocked when connected. Once I turn this off it worked fine. Not sure if this is the same problem people have been having.....

Great video and first I've heard of this "resolution". I use Qi charging 90% of the time and would only use lightning to get a "fast charge" much like you. So I never experienced this but will definitely try it for myself.
What if... you drained battery is totally drained? and your phone is in totally sleep?

Maybe the screen does not turn on, but the phone is still charged. Have you tried to plug the phone for few hours and see whether it is charged or not? Thanks

Tbh I switched to the iPhone Xs for many reasons from a galaxy s8 plus. Even though it was a solid phone one thing I hated was that I always had to check the phone before I charged it because it would sometimes not fast charge and say 44 hours till fully charged. I expected it to be a typo error or something but when I woke up the next day it only increased by 5 percent for 8 hours

About the iPhone charging. You have to go to settings and turn on USB connection and it should be sorted

I have an Ipad mini, purchased in 2013, exactly the same thing is happening when you plug in a non manufacturer charger with a lower than spec power rating.

Everyone is testing this particular issue with the standard charger and now the fast charge method. I have seen no one talking about this happening or NOT happening with the wireless charge method. Does it charge properly from "sleep" or idle with a wireless charge method or is it exclusive to the standard charge method?

Same problem with mine. Standard charger exhibited the issue while the fast charger didnt.

I also have the 15" MacBook Pro and the iPhone Xs Max. However, when I try to charge the iPhone Xs Max with the MacBook Pro charger like you just did, it does not start charging. But if you plug the cable in twice without waking it up, it starts to charge. You might have experienced the same in this video. Let it go to sleep, or wake it up again just for it to go back so sleep for a little bit, then try the fast charger again. Does not work for me. :/
Have you tried the power brick from an iPad? It’s not USB-C, but it gives semi-fast charging and I use it to charge my iPhone 8+.
How can it be software if my iPhone X from last year doesn’t have an issue using standard charge while sleeping overnight? Has to be hardware related

Getting intermittent results regardless of using fast charger or not. Something is definitely wrong. Also occurs using car charger. Need to unplug and replug to initiate charging.
Yeh I thought I am not affected by so called chargegate coz have been using iPad pro charger for my iPhone XS max since day one. Never opened the charging brick that I got in the box of the iPhone Xs max

My girlfriend and I both bought our 10smax weeks apart with additional Apple* chargers and both phones only charge on one side. If I plug it in and it charges then remove charger from iPhone rotate 180 degrees insert, phone does not charge.
My comment will probably go nowhere, but I tested my wife’s and my XS Max with the in-the-box 5W charger and both of them worked just fine. Along with 7.5, 10, 12 watt iPad and 3rd party chargers and 5 and 7.5 watt wireless chargers and none exhibited any issues. I hope it’s just some software fix they can push out for those who are having an issue.
EDIT: Even as a long time iPhone user, I’ve always found their typical terrible responses to proven issues to be stupid. Also, not including a fast charger or even a FASTER charger (like a 12W) is facepalm worthy.
I have the iPhone 6 Plus and after the update it is also having the charging problem or it started to go off, and on till I stop charging.
The question is: do you have to see the battery charge prompt in order to receive a charge?
It's a software issue as my son's iPad mini has this problem since the IOS update to 12. It's not the charger itself. It's the software that drives the charging cycle. Waiting for the update

Just try to turn off and turn on the "Raise to Wake" option. Worked for me.
I have charged my iPhone XS mas with a iPad charger and it charged really fast then few days later when I tried to charge it by the regular charger it shows to be charging but the % doesn’t increase until I switch off the phone with the charger inserted and then switch it off.. Then only it charges properly with the regular charger I am very tensed as its been only 4-5months I have got this phone... may I know the reason behind why is it so??
