  • We live in a new age of algorithms and that’s all thanks to the man who invented them, the Muslim Persian Polymath Al Khwarizmi.
    In the first episode of our series “The House of Wisdom” we break down who he was and his significant contributions to our modern world.

      The Indians. The Indian invented mathematics including algebra, sine, negative numbers, decimal point, zero and more. The Arabs arrived in India centuries AFTER these mathematical inventions. The Arabs learnt mathematics from the masters (Indians) and then shamelessly convinced the Middle East and western world they invented mathematics.
      In a nutshell, all credit is due to Indian mathematicians namely, Brahmagupta, Vārāhamihira and Bhaskara II. These scholarly men were alive centuries before the Arab world knew about maths!

      Father of Algebra is Diophantus a Greek who lived centuries before Islam existed. Much of the maths Muslims used was taken from ancient Greek books which they tried passing off as their own. Just like arab numbers we use today where take from India.

    Ironic that the middle east is called uncivilized when civilization first began in the cradle of Mesopotamian and the Nile.
    Writing, Farming, urban cities, the coin usage, the earliest poems, the use of sea travel for trade (Phoenicia Lebanon) all began in the middle east. And it never ended. It just evolved over time in technology and science. I hate it when some people call the middle east uncivilized. It was middle eastern farmers who introduced the Farming and animal husbandry to Europe and Africa during the Neolithic as genes proved.

      Baudhayana (800 BC - 740 BC) is said to be the original Mathematician behind the Pythagoras theorem. Pythagoras theorem was indeed known much before Pythagoras, and it was Indians who discovered it at least 1000 years before Pythagoras was born! The credit for authoring the earliest Sulba Sutras goes to him.

    Salam alaikum, the Islamic Golden Age was at the time of Rasul AlLah ﷺ. The time period at the Harun Ar Rashid in the House of Wisdom may be called the Golden age of Sciences and Philosophy, but so many other Muslim communities had that too like in Egypt, Andalus, Hind etc.

    Al-Khwarizmi wrote "Kitab al hisab al Hindi", a hindu numerical book. This was translated into Latin by the name "Algorithmi de Numero Indorum" ("Al-Khwarizmi's Indian numericals"). This book's name now called Algorithms bcoz of which many modern technology comes to us..

The Arabs learnt mathematics from the masters (Indians) and then shamelessly convinced the Middle East and western world they invented mathematics.

Yes, the Babylonians had a quadratic formula in steps (which I guess makes them the original inventor of an algorithm as far as recorded history goes), but these were developed much, much further in India. The geometrization of algebra and the systematisation of algebra as a subject of wider study is the greatest achievement of the Muslim world, and we are indebted to the many mathematical geniuses of Persia and Iraq (who were 95% NOT Arabs by the way), but the historical claims made of Muslims mathematicians are often false. India produced far more results in calculus than the Middle East ever did, and Archimedes is the first conceiver of the uses of calculus.     It's based on Indian astronomical methods known as the SindHind (actually Siddhant).
    This work marked the turning point in Islamic astronomy.

    Legend says in every post about Al-Khawarizmi post someone will say tHey sTOLe iT fRoM iNdiA.
    Like bruh most ancient civilizations already developed complex mathematical knowledge, how do you think they build those ancient wonders. The Mesopotamian, Chinese etc, even the Mayan has the concept of number 0. What Muslim scholars did during their golden age was actively learning, gathering,compiling and translating knowledge from various regions and shared it with everyone. Together with knowledge sharing with scholars from different region, many discoveries and inventions are made. Middle East was like a research and knowledge sharing centre.
    So stop getting butthurt saying it was stolen, it was a collective effort knowledge sharing of people at that time to further advance in technology.
    For me the genius one was the South American civilizations they developed their math by themselves without other nation to help them😂

      @@Skikdii it's actually a 1:1 translation of their system, They, in persia used it to create arithmetic algorithms, to develop algebra, and they extended the application of geometry.
      The 10 digital numeral system with decimal points was already created there. They also invented negative numbers but it was only popularized much later as Persia really didn't have a use for it yet.

    For people in the "Arabic or Indian numerals" debate. Arabic numerals are modified Indian numerals. They are different. Technically numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 themselves are Latin modifications of this man's work.
    But we use Arabic numerals not Indian Numerals. Compare the modifications guys!
    This guy here wasn't Indian or Arab either. He's a Khoresani. Which at the time weren't Persianized Yet.

    The word, Khwarizmi is a pure Persian word and It is NOT Arabic. We have the alphabet (خ) in Persian or (Kh). The Persian name consists of Khwar (خور), which means "the sun" and Zm(زم) means "earth" and denotes "the land from which the sun rises", although the same etymology is also given to today's state of Khurasan in Iran as well . Another view is that the Iranian link for "lowland" stands for kh (w) ar "low" and zam "earth, land". Various forms of khwar / khar / khor / hor are also commonly used in the Persian Gulf to stand for watt, marsh, or tidal bay. The narrator of this movie pronounced the alphabet (Kh) very well. Kharizmi was born in greater Persia in 727 AD and at that time the today's new country of Uzbekistan did not exist and people who lived there were mainly Persians so the Turkic people of Uzbekistan did not live in that area at that time. Uzbek people migrated centuries later and the land was part of the greater Persia. Khwarizmi was a Persian Mathematician and Polymath

      Turkic people were in Central Asia even before Christianity... You're wrong for that one. Cause Altay mountains the origin of turks... literally is located in Central Asia. But,Persian language was a dominant language even among turkic people...until Alisher Navoiy came and literally destroyed the perisan language with Karluk branch of turkic(Ozbek language). Al-Xorazmiy might an arab or persian...I personally don't care. But,the turks were there even before Khwarezmiy existed.

      Khwarazmi was living 900 years ago and that area was part of the greater Persia and people living in that area were Persians and at that time there was no Uzbek or Uzbekistan.     Khwarizm means khwar (xor) in turki language it means poor and izm (azm) means land. Soo it all means poor land or barren land. It's not iranianian language.

    Did Muhammad al-Khwarizmi discover anything of his own, or just copy/interpret/translate Hindu/Indian texts? If nothing, he should be given credit only for the interpretation/translation. From where did ARABIC come from if it is just a copy/interpretation/translation of some Hindu/Indian numeral system?

    The Indians. The Indian invented mathematics including algebra, sine, negative numbers, decimal point, zero and more. The Arabs arrived in India centuries AFTER these mathematical inventions. The Arabs learnt mathematics from the masters (Indians) and then shamelessly convinced the Middle East and western world they invented mathematics.
    In a nutshell, all credit is due to Indian mathematicians namely, Brahmagupta, Vārāhamihira and Bhaskara II. These scholarly men were alive centuries before the Arab world knew about maths!

      @@Nishant-t8y stolen? Al khawarizmi credited well the numeric method as 'Indian Number' as far as I know. It is western civilization that branded it literally as Arabic numerals until today. Just the numeral part, not the linear algebraic process.
      You guys, Indian are so lame and wanted to claim this claim that. It just a normal process in knowledge transfer where people would refer to known knowledge and develop it better. Khawarizm developed the algebraic method based on the known numbers. But you want to claim his work as [Indians Indians Indians] also.

    Finally, some true history! Al Khwarizmi is from Khorezm nowadays if you open your Google Maps or Apple Maps and search Khorezm Uzbekistan, you can find his country! He was truly remarkable genius and mathematician.

      Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are countries that were formed 30 years ago and have a 30-year history, but the Khorezm region is a historical region and countless Persian scientists have come out of there, Turks are immigrants to that region.
